The effect of pressure on the optical-absorption edge of CdIn2S4, MgIn2S4, and MnIn2S4 thiospinels at room temperature is investigated up to 20 GPa. The pressure dependence of their band-gaps has been analyzed using the Urbach rule. We have found that, within the pressure-range of stability of the low-pressure spinel phase, the band-gap of CdIn2S4 and MgIn2S4 exhibits a linear blue-shift with pressure, whereas the band-gap of MnIn2S4 exhibits a pronounced non-linear shift. In addition, an abrupt decrease of the band-gap energies occurs in the three compounds at pressures of 10 GPa, 8.5 GPa, and 7.2 GPa, respectively. Beyond these pressures, the optical-absorption edge red-shifts upon compression for the three studied thiospinels. All these results are discussed in terms of the electronic structure of each compound and their reported structural changes.
The pressure dependence of light-induced effects in single-crystalline BiFeO$_3$ is studied by optical spectroscopy. At low pressures, we observe three light-induced absorption features with energies just below the two crystal field excitations and the absorption onset, respectively. These absorption features were previously ascribed to excitons, possibly connected with the ultra-fast photostriction effect in BiFeO$_3$. The pressure-induced redshift of the absorption features follows the pressure dependence of the corresponding crystal field excitations and absorption onset, suggesting the lin…
High pressure energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy is a valuable structural technique, especially, when combined with a nano-polycrystalline diamond anvil cell. Here we present recent results obtained using the dispersive setup of the ODE beamline at SOLEIL synchrotron. The effect of pressure and temperature on the X-ray induced photoreduction is discussed on the example of nanocrystalline CuO. The possibility to follow local environment changes during pressure-induced phase transitions is demonstrated for alpha-MoO3 based on the reverse Monte Carlo simulations.
The electronic structure and optical absorption spectrum of V^{0} and V^{-} center in MgO are investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. It is demonstrated that the configuration with distortion is energetically favorable in PBE0 functional. The six O atoms around Mg vacancy are non-equivalent due to the distortion. The defect states localized in the band gap are obtained by applying hybrid functional calculations, which is very important for optical properties. At ambient condition, the absorption peak at ~2.5 and ~2.6 eV is assigned to V^{0} and V^{-…
The appearance of segregated wurtzite Mg$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$O with low Mg content in thin films with $x>0.3$ affected by phase separation, cannot be reliably probed with crystallographic techniques owing to its embedded nanocrystalline configuration. Here we show a high-pressure approach which exploits the distinctive behaviors under pressure of wurtzite Mg$_x$Zn$_{1-x}$O thin films with different Mg contents to unveil phase segregation for $x>0.3$. By using ambient conditions photoluminescence (PL), and with optical absorption and PL under high pressure for $x=0.3$ we show that the appearance of a …
We have studied the amorphization process of SnI4 up to 26.8GPa with unprecedented experimental details by combining Sn and I K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Standards and reverse Monte Carlo extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements confirm that the SnI4 tetrahedron is a fundamental structural unit that is preserved through the crystalline phase-I to crystalline phase-II transition about 7 to 10GPa and then in the amorphous phase that appears above 20GPa. Up to now unexploited Iodine EXAFS reveals to be extremely informative and confirms t…
Infra-red maps and profiles with high spatial resolution were obtained for two single crystal diamonds with pronounced CO2 IR absorption peaks. Detailed examination allows unambiguous assignment of the spectral features to solid CO2-I phase. It is shown that the distribution of IR band positions, intensities and widths in the sample follows regular patterns and is not chaotic as was suggested in previous works where spectra of a few individual spots were analysed. Consequently, pressure effects alone fail to explain all observed features and shifts of the CO2 bands. Experimental data can be ex…
Sound velocity and absorption measurements under high pressure using picosecond ultrasonics in diamond anvil cell. Application to the stability study of AlPdMn
The pressure evolution of the local structure of Fe2O3 hematite has been determined for the first time by extended x-ray absorption fine structure up to 79 GPa. The comparison to the different high-pressure forms proposed in the literature suggests that the orthorhombic structure with space group Aba2 is the most probable. The crossover from Fe high-spin to low-spin states with pressure increase has been monitored from the pre-edge region of the Fe K-edge absorption spectra. The "simultaneous" comparison with the local structural changes allows us to definitively conclude that it is the electr…
We have performed measurements of the IR absorption of $\text{SiO}_2$ nanoparticles confined in an argon radio-frequency plasma discharge using an FTIR spectrometer. By varying the gas pressure of the discharge and duty cycle of the applied radio-frequency voltage we observed a shift of the absorption peak of $\text{SiO}_2$. We attributed this shift to charge-dependent absorption features of $\text{SiO}_2$. The charge-dependent shift has been calculated for $\text{SiO}_2$ particles and from comparisons with the experiment the particle charge has been retrieved using our IRPRS (Infrared Phonon …
Density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles investigations of structural, elastic, electronic band structure, and optical properties of superconducting ternary phosphides (BaM2P2; M = Ni, Rh) have been carried out in this study. This is the first detailed pressure dependent study of these properties for the titled compounds. The calculated ambient condition properties are compared with existing experimental and theoretical results, where available. The pressure dependent variations of the electronic density of states at the Fermi level, N(EF), and the Debye temperature, thetaD, have…

We have presented the structural, elastic, optoelectronic and transport properties of Sr3SnO under pressure by using first principles method. The application of hydrostatic pressure causes charge transfer from Sr(5s) orbital to Sn(5p) and O(2p) orbitals. The increasing trend of Pughs ratio under pressure implies that the material tends to be ductile at high pressure. The semiconductor-metal transition occurs at 14 GPa and the density of states at the Fermi level is significantly increased at this pressure. The refractive index, optical conductivity, and absorption of Sr3SnO have been found to …
Two new phases of hydrogen have been discovered at room temperature in Ref.1: phase IV above 220 GPa and phase V above ~270 GPa. In the present work we have found a new phase VI at P~360 GPa and T<200 K. This phase is likely metallic as follows from the featureless Raman spectra, a strong drop in resistance, and absence of a photoconductive response. We studied hydrogen at low temperatures with the aid of Raman, infrared absorption, and electrical measurements at pressures up to 380 GPa, and have built a new phase diagram of hydrogen.
We here report a detailed high-pressure infrared transmission study of BiTeCl and BiTeBr. We follow the evolution of two band transitions: the optical excitation $β$ between two Rashba-split conduction bands, and the absorption $γ$ across the band gap. In the low pressure range, $p< 4$~GPa, for both compounds $β$ is approximately constant with pressure and $γ$ decreases, in agreement with band structure calculations. In BiTeCl, a clear pressure-induced phase transition at 6~GPa leads to a different ground state. For BiTeBr, the pressure evolution is more subtle, and we discuss the possibility …
Optical properties of compressed fluid hydrogen in the region where dissociation and metallization is observed are computed by ab-initio methods and compared to recent experimental results. We confirm that above 3000 K both processes are continuous while below 1500K the first order phase transition is accompanied by a discontinuity of the DC conductivity and the thermal conductivity, while both the reflectivity and absorption coefficient vary rapidly but continuously. Our results support the recent analysis of NIF experiments (P. Celliers et al, Science 361, 677-682 (2018)) which assigned the …
