Since the early days of digital communication, Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) have now been routinely used in speech recognition, processing of natural languages, images, and in bioinformatics. An HMM $(X_i,Y_i)_{i\ge 1}$ assumes observations $X_1,X_2,...$ to be conditionally independent given an "explanotary" Markov process $Y_1,Y_2,...$, which itself is not observed; moreover, the conditional distribution of $X_i$ depends solely on $Y_i$. Central to the theory and applications of HMM is the Viterbi algorithm to find {\em a maximum a posteriori} estimate $q_{1:n}=(q_1,q_2,...,q_n)$ of $Y_{1:n}$ given the observed data $x_{1:n}$. Maximum {\em a posteriori} paths are also called Viterbi paths or alignments. Recently, attempts have been made to study the behavior of Viterbi alignments of HMMs with two hidden states when $n$ tends to infinity. It has indeed been shown that in some special cases a well-defined limiting Viterbi alignment exists. While innovative, these attempts have relied on rather strong assumptions. This work proves the existence of infinite Viterbi alignments for virtually any HMM with two hidden states.
For hidden Markov models one of the most popular estimates of the hidden chain is the Viterbi path -- the path maximising the posterior probability. We consider a more general setting, called the pairwise Markov model (PMM), where the joint process consisting of finite-state hidden process and observation process is assumed to be a Markov chain. It has been recently proven that under some conditions the Viterbi path of the PMM can almost surely be extended to infinity, thereby defining the infinite Viterbi decoding of the observation sequence, called the Viterbi process. This was done by const…
We consider the Sequential Probability Ratio Test applied to Hidden Markov Models. Given two Hidden Markov Models and a sequence of observations generated by one of them, the Sequential Probability Ratio Test attempts to decide which model produced the sequence. We show relationships between the execution time of such an algorithm and Lyapunov exponents of random matrix systems. Further, we give complexity results about the execution time taken by the Sequential Probability Ratio Test.
Finite state space hidden Markov models are flexible tools to model phenomena with complex time dependencies: any process distribution can be approximated by a hidden Markov model with enough hidden states. We consider the problem of estimating an unknown process distribution using nonparametric hidden Markov models in the misspecified setting, that is when the data-generating process may not be a hidden Markov model. We show that when the true distribution is exponentially mixing and satisfies a forgetting assumption, the maximum likelihood estimator recovers the best approximation of the true …
A hidden Markov model with trends is a hidden Markov model whose emission distributions are translated by a trend that depends on the current hidden state and on the current time. Contrary to standard hidden Markov models, such processes are not homogeneous and cannot be made homogeneous by a simple de-trending step. We show that when the trends are polynomial, the maximum likelihood estimator is able to recover the trends together with the other parameters and is strongly consistent. More precisely, the supremum norm of the difference between the true trends and the estimated ones tends to ze…
Hidden Markov chain, or Markov field, models, with observations in a Euclidean space, play a major role across signal and image processing. The present work provides a statistical framework which can be used to extend these models, along with related, popular algorithms (such as the Baum-Welch algorithm), to the case where the observations lie in a Riemannian manifold. It is motivated by the potential use of hidden Markov chains and fields, with observations in Riemannian manifolds, as models for complex signals and images.
We show that the posterior distribution of parameters in a hidden Markov model with parametric emission distributions and discrete and known state space is asymptotically normal. The main novelty of our proof is that it is based on a testing condition and the sequence of test functions is obtained using an optimal transportation inequality.
Context Tree Estimation in Variable Length Hidden Markov Models
我们解决了可变长度隐马尔可夫模型中的上下文树估计问题。我们提出了一个估计的上下文树的隐马尔可夫过程,它不需要事先上界的深度上下文树。我们证明了估计量是强相合的。这一方法使用了Finesso和Lorenzo(Consistent estimation of the order for Markov and hidden Markov chains(1990))和E.Gassiat和S.Boucheron(Optimal error exponents in hidden Markov model order estimation(2003))的信息论混合不等式。我们提出了一种算法来有效地计算估计,并提供模拟研究,以支持我们的结果。
