We present results of Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations on the behavior of liquid nanodroplets on rough hydrophobic and hydrophilic solid surfaces. On hydrophobic surfaces, the contact angle for nanodroplets depends strongly on the root mean square roughness amplitude, but it is nearly independent of the fractal dimension of the surface. Since increasing the fractal dimension increases the short-wavelength roughness, while the long-wavelength roughness is almost unchanged, we conclude that for hydrophobic interactions the short-wavelength (atomistic) roughness is not very important. We show that the nanodroplet is in a Cassie-like state. For rough hydrophobic surfaces, there is no contact angle hysteresis due to strong thermal fluctuations, which occur at the liquid-solid interface on the nanoscale. On hydrophilic surfaces, however, there is strong contact angle hysteresis due to higher energy barrier. These findings may be very important for the development of artificially biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces.
Adsorption of small amphiphilic molecules occurs in various biological and technological processes, sometimes desired, the other times unwanted (e.g., contamination). Surface-active molecules preferentially bind to interfaces and affect their wetting properties. We study the adsorption of short-chained alcohols (simple surfactants) to the water-vapor interface and solid surfaces of various polarities using molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis enables us to establish a theoretical expression for the adsorption coefficient, which exponentially scales with the molecular surface area and t…
The temperature dependence of the structure of water confined in hydrophilic mesostructured porous silica (MCM-41) and hydrophobic benzene-bridged periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) is studied by Raman vibrational spectroscopy. For capillary filled pores (75% relative humidity, RH), the OH-stretching region is dominated by the contribution from liquid water situated in the core part of the pore. It adopts a bulk-like structure that is modestly disrupted by confinement and surface hydrophobicity. For partially filled pores (33% RH), the structure of the non-freezable adsorbed film radicall…
We perform a joint numerical and experimental study to sistematically characterize the motion of drops sliding over a periodic array of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes with large wettability contrast, and typical width of hundreds of $μ\textrm{m}$. The fraction of the hydrophobic stripes has been varied from about 20% to 80%. The effects of the heterogeneous patterning can be described by a renormalized value of the critical Bond number, i.e. the critical dimensionless force needed to depin the drop before it starts to move. Close to the critical Bond number we observe a jerkil…
The unique and remarkable properties of graphene can be exploited as the basis to a wide range of applications. However, in spite of years of investigations there are some important graphene properties that are not still fully understood, as for example, its wettability. There are controversial reported results whether graphene is really hydrophobic or hydrophilic. In order to address this problem we have carried out classical molecular dynamics simulations of water nanodroplets shot against graphene surface. Our results show that the contact angle values between the nanodroplets and graphene …
We develop a lattice-based Monte Carlo simulation method for charged mixtures capable of treating dielectric heterogeneities. Using this method, we study oil-water mixtures containing an antagonistic salt, with hydrophilic cations and hydrophobic anions. Our simulations reveal several phases with a spatially modulated solvent composition, in which the ions partition between water-rich and water-poor regions according to their affinity. In addition to the recently observed lamellar phase, we find tubular, droplet, and even gyroid phases reminiscent of those found in block copolymers and surfact…
Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to study the wetting behavior of nanoscale aqueous hydrophilic and hydrophobic Imidazolium based ionic liquid (IL) droplets on a solid graphite substrate subjected to the perpendicular electric field. Imminent transformation in the droplet configuration was observed at E = 0.08 V/Å both for hydrophobic ILs [EMIM][NTF2] and SPC/E water droplets. However, for hydrophilic, [EMIM][BF4], the droplet wets asymmetrically within electric field E = 0.09 V/Å for lower weight percentages of ILs and E = 0.1 V/Å at a higher weight percentage of ILs (i.e., 50wt%)…
Efficient "on-the-fly" calculation of Raman spectra from \textit{ab-initio} molecular dynamics: Application to hydrophobic/hydrophilic solutes in bulk water
We experimentally explore pressure-driven flow of water and n-hexane across nanoporous silica (Vycor glass monoliths with 7 or 10 nm pore diameters, respectively) as a function of temperature and surface functionalization (native and silanized glass surfaces). Hydraulic flow rates are measured by applying hydrostatic pressures via inert gases (argon and helium, pressurized up to 70 bar) on the upstream side in a capacitor-based membrane permeability setup. For the native, hydrophilic silica walls, the measured hydraulic permeabilities can be quantitatively accounted for by bulk fluidity provid…
Fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate how a liquid-like water droplet behaves when into contact with a nanopore formed by carbon nanotube arrays. We have considered different tube arrays, varying the spacing between them, as well as, different chemical functionalizations on the uncapped nanotubes. Our results show that simple functionalizations (for instance, hydrogen ones) allow tuning up the wetting surface properties increasing the permeation of liquid inside the nanopore. For functionalizations that increase the surface hydrophilicity, even when the…
The unique physical and optical properties of nanoparticles make their reliable and rapid assembly an important goal for nanotechnology. To this end, many competing driving forces have been targeted to control the self-assembly, though issues with reliability and efficiency indicate that interfaces on the nanoscale are not yet fully understood. In this letter we report for the first time that the flow of water media from the interface between chemically nanopatterned hydrophobic surfaces and adjacent hydrophilic regions (a Janus interface) can effectively be employed for rapid nanoparticle ass…
Thermodynamics tells us to expect underwater contact between two hydrophobic surfaces to result in stronger adhesion compared to two hydrophilic surfaces. However, presence of water changes not only energetics, but also the dynamic process of reaching a final state, which couples solid deformation and liquid evacuation. These dynamics can create challenges for achieving strong underwater adhesion/friction, which affects diverse fields including soft robotics, bio-locomotion and tire traction. Closer investigation, requiring sufficiently precise resolution of film evacuation while simultaneousl…
Antagonistic salts are composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic ions. In a mixture solvent (water-oil) such ion pairs are preferentially attracted to water or oil, giving rise to a coupling between the charge density and the composition. First, they form a large electric double layer at a water-oil interface, reducing the surface tension and producing mesophases. Here, the cations and anions are loosely bound by the Coulomb attraction across the interface on the scale of the Debye screening length. Second, on solid surfaces, hydrophilic (hydrophobic) ions are trapped in a water-rich (oil-rich) …
The free energies to evacuate the first hydration shell around a solute and a cavity defined by the first hydration shell depend on the system size. This observation interpreted within the quasichemical theory shows that both the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic contributions to hydration depend on the system size, decreasing with increasing system size. Although the net hydration free energy benefits somewhat from the balancing of hydrophilic and hydrophobic contributions, a large system still appears necessary to describe the effect of the solvent on the macromolecule.
Solvent exchange (also called solvent shifting or Ouzo effect) is a generally used bottom-up process to mass-produce nanoscale droplets. In this process, a good solvent for some oil is displaced by a poor one, leading to oil nanodroplet nucleation and subsequent growth. Here we perform this process on a hydrophobic substrate so that sessile droplets so-called surface nanodroplets-develop, following the work of Zhang et al. [Zhang, X.; Lu, Z.; Tan, H.; Bao, L.; He, Y.; Sun, C.; Lohse, D. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 2015, 122, 9253-9257]. In contrast to what was done in that paper, we chose a …
Superresolution microscopy has become a powerful tool to investigate the internal structure of complex colloidal and polymeric systems, such as microgels, at the nanometer scale. The ability to monitor microgels response to temperature changes in situ opens new and exciting opportunities to design and precisely control their behaviour for various applications. When performing advanced microscopy experiments, interactions between the particle and the environment can be important. Often microgels are deposited on a substrate since they have to remain still for several minutes during the experime…
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of Interaction between Model Rough Hydrophobic Surfaces
我们研究了分子粗糙和柔性模型表面之间的疏水相互作用的一些方面。我们在这项工作中使用的模型是基于我们以前使用的模型(Eun,C.; Berkowitz,M. L. J. Phys. Chem.
