The Sloan Digital Sky Survey turned out to be very efficient in identifying white dwarf/main sequence binaries (WDMS). The population of WDMS systems consists of wide systems whose stellar components evolve like single stars and - more interesting in the context of close binary evolution - PCEBs. We pursue a large-scale follow-up survey to identify and characterise the PCEBs among the WDMS binaries that have been found with SDSS. We use a two-step strategy with the identification of PCEBs among WDMS in the first and orbital period determinations in the second phase. Here we present first results of our VLT/FORS2 pilot-study that has the target of identifying the PCEBs among the fainter (g>~18.5) SDSS-WDMS. From published SDSS catalogues we selected 26 WDMS targets to be observed with VLT/FORS2. Using a spectral decomposition/fitting technique we determined the white dwarf effective temperatures and surface gravities, masses, and secondary star spectral types for all WDMS in our sample. We used the NaI 8183.27,8194.81 doublet to measure radial velocity variations of our targets and performed additional follow-up spectroscopy using Magellan-Clay/LDSS3 of two systems showing significant radial velocity variations. Among the 26 WDMS systems we find 9 strong PCEB candidates showing clear (>=3sigma) radial velocity variations and we estimate the fraction of PCEBs among SDSS WDMS to be ~35%. We find indications for a dependence of the relative number of PCEBs among SDSS-WDMS on the spectral type of the secondary star. These results are subject to small number statistics and need to be confirmed by additional observations. For two of the identified PCEB candidates, SDSSJ1047+0523 and SDSSJ1414-0132, we measured the orbital periods to be 9.17hrs and 17.48hrs respectively.
We present VLT and Magellan spectroscopy and NTT photometry of nine faint cataclysmic variables (CVs) which were spectroscopically identified by the SDSS. We measure orbital periods for five of these from the velocity variations of the cores and wings of their Halpha emission lines. Four of the five have orbital periods shorter than the 2-3 hour period gap observed in the known population of CVs. SDSS J004335.14-003729.8 has an orbital period of Porb = 82.325 +/- 0.088 min; Doppler maps show emission from the accretion disc, bright spot and the irradiated inner face of the secondary star. In i…
In this contribution we would like to emphasize the usefulness of data mining multiwavelength surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) or the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) -- which have become available to the public recently -- in order to find interesting objects suitable for adaptive optics (AO) or interferometric (VLTI) observations in the infrared. We will present a sample of extragalactic X-ray sources having an optical counterpart (based on SDSS data release 1) which are suitable for AO/VLTI observations using a natural guide star in their vicinity.
Among the unusual broad absorption line quasars being found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) are objects with much stronger absorption in Fe III than Fe II. These unusual line ratios require a high density in the outflow (n_H >= 3 x 10^{10} cm^{-3}). They should also appear for only a limited range of outflow column densities, which explains their rarity. Previously we suggested that the Fe III line ratios were also affected by a resonance; we now believe this is an artifact of structure in the underlying Fe II + Fe III pseudocontinuum. The SDSS is also discovering objects with absorptio…
We present medium-resolution VLT/FORS2 spectroscopy of six cataclysmic variables discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We determine orbital periods for SDSS J023322.61+005059.5 (96.08 +/- 0.09 min), SDSS J091127.36+084140.7 (295.74 +/- 0.22 min), SDSS J103533.02+055158.3 (82.10 +/- 0.09 min), and SDSS J121607.03+052013.9 (most likely 98.82 +/- 0.16 min, but the one-day aliases at 92 min and 107 min are also possible) using radial velocities measured from their H_alpha and H_beta emission lines. Three of the four orbital periods measured here are close to the observed 75--80 min minimum p…
We analyse high-resolution VLT+UVES spectra of the low-ionization intrinsic absorber observed in the BAL QSO SDSS J001130.56+005550.7. Two narrow absorption systems at velocities -600 km/s and -22000 km/s are detected. The low-velocity system is part of the broad absorption line (BAL), while the high-velocity one is well detached. While most narrow absorption components are only detected in the high-ionization species, the lowest velocity component is detected in both high- and low-ionization species, including in the excited SiII* and CII* lines. From the analysis of doublet lines, we find th…
We present follow-up spectroscopy and photometry of 11 post common envelope binary (PCEB) candidates identified from multiple Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectroscopy in an earlier paper. Radial velocity measurements using the \Lines{Na}{I}{8183.27,8194.81} absorption doublet were performed for nine of these systems and provided measurements of six orbital periods in the range $\Porb= 2.7-17.4$ h. Three PCEB candidates did not show significant radial velocity variations in the follow-up data, and we discuss the implications for the use of SDSS spectroscopy alone to identify PCEBs. Differen…
We present new VLT spectroscopic observations of the most distant quasar known, SDSS J1030+0524 at z=6.28 which was recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We confirm the presence of a complete Gunn-Peterson trough caused by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium. There is no detectable flux over the wavelength range from 8450 to 8710 A. We set an improved limit on the drop of the flux level blueward of the Ly alpha line: a factor of > 200. Below 8450 A the spectrum shows a rise in flux, with a large fraction (> 60 %) of the total emission produced by few narrow features of …
We present a detailed analysis of 101 white dwarf-main sequence binaries (WDMS) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for which multiple SDSS spectra are available. We detect significant radial velocity variations in 18 WDMS, identifying them as post common envelope binaries (PCEBs) or strong PCEB candidates. Strict upper limits to the orbital periods are calculated, ranging from 0.43 to 7880 d. Given the sparse temporal sampling and relatively low spectral resolution of the SDSS spectra, our results imply a PCEB fraction of >=15% among the WDMS in the SDSS data base. Using a spectral decom…
We identify SDSS011009.09+132616.1, SDSS030308.35+005444.1, SDSS143547.87+373338.5 and SDSS154846.00+405728.8 as four eclipsing white dwarf plus main sequence (WDMS) binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and report on follow-up observations of these systems. Orbital periods and ephemerides have been established from multi-season photometry. SDSS1435+3733, with Porb=3h has the shortest orbital period of all known eclipsing WDMS binaries. Time-resolved spectroscopic observations have been obtained and the radial velocities of the secondary stars in all four systems were measured. A spectra…
Context: As is the case of several other Be stars, Achernar is surrounded by an envelope, recently detected by near-IR interferometry. Aims: We search for the signature of circumstellar emission at distances of a few stellar radii from Achernar, in the thermal IR domain. Methods: We obtained interferometric observations on three VLTI baselines in the N band (8-13 mic), using the MIDI instrument. Results: From the measured visibilities, we derive the angular extension and flux contribution of the N band circumstellar emission in the polar direction of Achernar. The interferometrically resolved …
We report the discovery of an isolated brown dwarf with similar properties to the binary object Gliese 229B and to the newly discovered field brown dwarf SDSS 1624+00. Although exhibiting similar colors, its magnitude of ~20.5 is about 6 and 5 magnitudes fainter than Gliese 229B and SDSS 1624+00 respectively. This is the third methane brown dwarf reported to date, the second isolated one in the field and by far the most distant at ~ 100 pc. Its IR spectrum, although at low S/N given the faintness of the object, is remarkably similar to those of the 2 other methane brown dwarfs.
We study high-resolution spectra of the `overlapping-trough' low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar SDSS J030000.56+004828.0. The CaII, MgII and MgI column densities in this object are the largest reported to date for any BAL outflow. The broad CaII absorption is mildly blended, but the blending can be disentangled to measure the CaII column density, which is large enough that the outflow must include a strong hydrogen ionization front. The outflow begins at a blueshift of ~1650 km/s from the systemic redshift. The lowest velocity BAL region produces strong CaII absorption but doe…
We give a progress report about the activities within the CIFIST Team related to the search for extremely metal-poor stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's spectroscopic catalog. So far the search has provided 25 candidates with metallicities around or smaller -3. For 15 candidates high resolution spectroscopy with UVES at the VLT has confirmed their extremely metal-poor status. Work is under way to extend the search to the SDSS's photometric catalog by augmenting the SDSS photometry, and by gauging the capabilities of X-shooter when going to significantly fainter targets.
We present the first results of a combined VLT VIMOS integral-field unit and Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ACS study of the early-type lens galaxy SDSS J2321-097 at z=0.0819, extending kinematic studies to a look-back time of 1 Gyr. This system, discovered in the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS), has been observed as part of a VLT Large Programme with the goal of obtaining two-dimensional stellar kinematics of 17 early-type galaxies to z~0.35 and Keck spectroscopy of an additional dozen lens systems. Bayesian modelling of both the surface brightness distribution of the lensed source and the two-di…
We present the first VLT near-IR observations of a gravitationally lensed quasar, using adaptive optics and laser guide star. These observations can be considered as a test bench for future systematic observations of lensed quasars with adaptive optics, even when bright natural guide stars are not available in the nearby field. With only 14 minutes of observing time, we derived very accurate astrometry of the quasar images and of the lensing galaxy, with 0.05 \arcsec spatial resolution, comparable to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). In combination with deep VLT optical spectra of the quasar i…
We study the Be star $δ$ Cen circumstellar disk using long-baseline interferometry which is the only observing technique capable of resolving spatially and spectroscopically objects smaller than 5 mas in the H and K b and. We used the VLTI/AMBER instrument on January 6, 8, and 9, 2008, in the H and K bands to complete low (35) and medium (150 0) spectral resolution observations. We detected an oscillation in the visibility curve plotted as a function of the spatial frequency which is a clear signat ure of a companion around $δ$ Cen. Our best-fit soltution infers a binary separation of 68.7 mas…
We are conducting a high-resolution follow-up of candidate EMP stars extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; York et al. 2000) using UVES at the VLT. Three of the programme stars, SDSS J0912+0216, SDSS J1036+1212 and SDSS J1349-0229, where deliberately targetted as CEMP stars since a strong $G$ band was evident from the SDSS spectra and the weakness of the Ca {\sc ii} K line testified their very low metallicity. The UVES high resolution follow-up confirmed the original findings ([Fe/H] $<-2.50$) and allowed a more detailed investigation of their chemical composition. We determined t…
We will present first results of ESO-VLT AO-assisted integral-field spectroscopy of a sample of X-ray bright AGN with redshifts of 0.04 < z < 1. We constructed this sample by cross-correlating the SDSS and ROSAT surveys and utilizing typical AO constraints. This sample allows for a detailed study of the NIR properties of the nuclear and host environments with high spectral resolution on the 100 pc scale. These objects can then be compared directly to the local (z<0.01) galaxy populations (observed without AO) at the same linear scale. As a current example, we will present observations of the z…
We present high time resolution VLT spectroscopy of SDSS J124058.03-015919.2, a new helium-transferring binary star identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We measure an orbital period of 37.355+/-0.002 minutes, confirming the AM CVn nature of the system. From the velocity amplitudes of the accretor and the accretion stream--disc impact, we derive a mass ratio q=0.039+/-0.010. Our spectral coverage extends from 3700A--9500A and shows the presence of helium, nitrogen, silicon and iron in the accretion disc, plus the redshifted, low-velocity "central spikes" in the helium lines, known from t…
We report the discovery of a strong magnetic field in the unique pulsating carbon-atmosphere white dwarf SDSS J142625.71+575218.3. From spectra gathered at the MMT and Keck telescopes, we infer a surface field of B_s ~1.2 MG, based on obvious Zeeman components seen in several carbon lines. We also detect the presence of a Zeeman-splitted He I 4471 line, which is an indicator of the presence of a non-negligible amount of helium in the atmosphere of this Hot DQ star. This is important for understanding its pulsations, as nonadabatic theory reveals that some helium must be present in the envelope…
The high angular resolution and dynamic range achieved by the NACO adaptive optics system on the VLT is an excellent tool to study the morphology of Planetary Nebulae (PNe). We observed four stars in different evolutionary stages from the AGB to the PNe phase. The images of the inner parts of the PN Hen 2-113 reveal the presence of a dusty torus tilted with respect to all the other structures of the nebula and the present of hot dust close to the hot central star. The NACO observations of Roberts 22 reveal an amazingly complex nebular morphology with a S-shape that can be interpreted in terms …
Many EHB stars have been found in short-period binaries, where the companions in these post-common envelope systems are either white dwarfs or dM stars; these systems are catalogued as hot subdwarfs because the subdwarf is the more luminous component. Hypothesized Roche-lobe overflow systems (with more massive companions) may largely be uncatalogued, since the G band or Ca II K-line from the companion may have caused them to be overlooked or discarded. In particular, many candidate objects were excluded from the PG catalog because of such spectroscopic indicators. Could these rejects include l…
We report the results of an exploratory program to image the extended circumstellar envelopes of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in dust-scattered galactic light. The goal is to characterize the morphology of the envelopes as a probe of the mass-loss process. The observations consist of short exposures with the VLT and longer exposures with 1-2m telescopes, augmented with archival images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We observed 12 AGB stars and detected the circumstellar envelopes in 7. The detected envelopes have mass loss rates more than about 5 10E-6 solar mass per year, and they ca…
We present an unbiased orbit solution and mass determination of the components of the eclipsing binary NY Vir as a critical test for the formation scenarios of subdwarf B stars. We obtained high-resolution time series VLT/UVES spectra and high-speed multicolour VLT/ULTRACAM photometric observations of NY Vir, a rapidly pulsating subdwarf B star in a short period eclipsing binary. Combining the radial velocity curve obtained from the VLT/UVES spectra with the VLT/ULTRACAM multicolour lightcurves, we determined numerical orbital solutions for this eclipsing binary. Due to the large number of fre…
We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the eclipsing cataclysmic variable SDSS J150722.30+523039.8 (hereafter SDSS J1507). This system has an orbital period of 66.61 minutes, placing it below the observed ``period minimum'' for cataclysmic variables. We determine the system parameters via a parameterised model of the eclipse fitted to the observed lightcurve by chi^2 minimisation. We obtain a mass ratio of q = 0.0623 +/- 0.0007 and an orbital inclination i = 83.63 +/- 0.05 degrees. The primary mass is M_w = 0.90 +/- 0.01 M_sun. The secondary mass and radius are found to be M_r =0.05…
(Abridged) We present our VLT/FORS1 deep spectroscopic observations of the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J0924+0219, as well as archival HST/NICMOS and ACS images of the same object. The two-epoch spectra, obtained in the Multi Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode, allow for very accurate flux calibration, spatial deconvolution of the data, and provide the redshift of the lensing galaxy z=0.394 +/- 0.001. These spectra, taken 15 days apart, show only slight continuum variations, while the broad emission lines display obvious changes in the red wing of the Mg II line, in the Fe II bands, and in …
Beyond its goals related to the extragalactic universe, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is an effective tool for identifying stellar objects with unusual spectral energy distributions. Here we report on the 53 new magnetic white dwarfs discovered during the first two years of the survey, including 38 whose data are made public in the 1500 square-degree First Data Release. Discoveries span the magnitude range 16.3 < 20.5, and based on the recovery rate for previously-known magnetic white dwarfs, the completeness of the SDSS appears to be high for reasonably hot stars with B > 3 MG and g > 1…
We present interferometric and single-dish mid-infrared observations of a sample of massive young stellar objects (BN-type objects), using VLTI-MIDI (10 micron) and Subaru-COMICS (24.5 micron). We discuss the regions S140, Mon R2, M8E-IR, and W33A. The observations probe the inner regions of the dusty envelope at scales of 50 milli arcsecond and 0.6 arcsec (100-1000 AU), respectively. Simultaneous model fits to spectral energy distributions and spatial data are achieved using self-consistent spherical envelope modelling. We conclude that those MYSO envelopes that are best described by a spheri…
We discuss the future possibilities for extragalactic star cluster research with the expected new ground-based and space-based telescopes and instrumentation. Significant gains are expected due to improved angular resolution, sensitivity, and area coverage particularly in the infrared and radio, accompanied by progress in evolutionary and dynamical modelling. Improvements in angular resolution are anticipated, especially through new adaptive optics systems (e.g., Keck, Gemini, VLT), and interferometry (e.g., Keck, VLT, LBT, ALMA, SMA, SkA), and space instrumentation (e.g., Chandra, NGST), enab…
We performed a spectroscopic survey toward five intermediate-mass class I YSOs located in the Southern Vela molecular cloud in the L and M bands at resolving powers 600-800 up to 10,000, using the Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera mounted on the VLT-ANTU. Lower mass companion objects were observed simultaneously in both bands. Solid H2O at 3 micron is detected in all sources, including the companion objects. CO ice at 4.67 micron is detected in a few main targets and one companion object. One object (LLN 19) shows little CO ice but strong gas-phase CO ro-vibrational lines in absorption. T…
We present VLT-ISAAC L-band spectroscopy toward 10 stars in SVS 4, a 30"x45" dense cluster of pre-main sequence stars deeply embedded in the Serpens star forming cloud. The ISAAC spectra are combined with archival imaging from UKIRT and ISOCAM to derive accurate extinctions toward the SVS 4 stars. The data are then used to construct a spatial map of the distribution of ice in front of the cluster stars with an average angular resolution of 6" or 1500 AU, three orders of magnitude better than previous maps. We show that water ice is present throughout the region and confirm the presence of meth…
Optical time series photometry of the short period magnetic white dwarf + probable brown dwarf binary SDSS 121209.31+013627.7 reveals pulse-like variability in all bands from i' to u', peaking at u'. These modulations are most likely due to a self-eclipsing accretion hot spot on the white dwarf, rotating into view every 88.43 minutes. This period is commensurate with the radial velocity period determined by Schmidt et al. 2005 of ~90 minutes, and consistent with the rotation period of the accretor being equal to the binary orbital period. We combine our observations with those recently publish…
Recent advances in constructing stellar evolution models of hydrogen-deficient post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are presented. Hydrogen-deficiency can originate from mixing and subsequent convective burning of protons in the deeper layers during a thermal pulse on the post-AGB (VLTP). Dredge-up alone may also be responsible for hydrogen-deficiency of post-AGB stars. Models of the last thermal pulse on the AGB with very small envelope masses have shown efficient third dredge-up. The hydrogen content of the envelope is diluted sufficiently to produce H-deficient post-AGB stars (AFTP). Mo…
In BTA spectra of the supernova SN2006aj, identified with the X-ray flash (XRF) and gamma-ray burst XRF/GRB060218/SN2006aj, we detected details interpreted as hydrogen lines, which is a sign of stellar-wind envelope around a massive progenitor star of the gamma-ray burst. Results of modeling two early spectra obtained with the BTA in 2.55 and 3.55 days after the explosion of Type Ic supernova SN2006aj (z=0.0331) are presented. The spectra were modeled in the Sobolev approximation with the SYNOW code (Branch et al. 2001; Elmhamdi et al. 2006). In the spectra of the optical afterglow of the X-ra…
Aims: We test the technique of spectro-astrometry as a potential method to investigate the close environment of massive young stars. Method: Archival VLT near infrared K band spectra (R=8900) of three massive young stellar objects and one Wolf-Rayet star are examined for spectro-astrometric signatures. The young stellar objects display emission lines such as Brackett gamma, CO 2-0 and CO 3-1 that are characteristic of ionised regions and molecular disks respectively. Two of the sample sources also display emission lines such as NIII and MgII that are characteristic of high temperatures. Result…
