Groverian and Geometric entanglement measures of the n-party pure state are expressed by the (n-1)-party reduced state density operator directly. This main theorem derives several important consequences. First, if two pure n-qudit states have reduced states of (n-1)-qudits, which are equivalent under local unitary(LU) transformations, then they have equal Groverian and Geometric entanglement measures. Second, both measures have an upper bound for pure states. However, this upper bound is reached only for two qubit systems. Third, it converts effectively the nonlinear eigenvalue problem for three qubit Groverian measure into linear eigenvalue equations. Some typical solutions of these linear equations are written explicitly and the features of the general solution are discussed in detail.
The Groverian entanglement measure of pure quantum states of $n$ qubits is generalized to the case in which the qubits are divided into any $m \le n$ parties and the entanglement between these parties is evaluated. To demonstrate this measure we apply it to general states of three qubits and to symmetric states with any number of qubits such as the Greenberg-Horne-Zeiliner state and the W state.
The Groverian entanglement measure, G(psi), is applied to characterize a variety of pure quantum states |psi> of multiple qubits. The Groverian measure is calculated analytically for certain states of high symmetry, while for arbitrary states it is evaluated using a numerical procedure. In particular, it is calculated for the class of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, the W states as well as for random pure states of n qubits. The entanglement generated by Grover's algorithm is evaluated by calculating G(psi) for the intermediate states that are obtained after t Grover iterations, for variou…
The Groverian entanglement measure introduced earlier for pure quantum states [O. Biham, M.A. Nielsen and T. Osborne, Phys. Rev. A 65, 062312 (2002)] is generalized to the case of mixed states, in a way that maintains its operational interpretation. The Groverian measure of a mixed state of n qubits is obtained by a purification procedure into a pure state of 2n qubits, followed by an optimization process based on Uhlmann's theorem, before the resulting state is fed into Grover's search algorithm. The Groverian measure, expressed in terms of the maximal success probability of the algorithm, pr…
In this work we study the entanglement of pure fourpartite of qubit states. The analysis is realized through the comparison between two different entanglement measures: the Groverian entanglement measure and the residual entanglement measured with negativities. Furthemore, we discuss some applications of four-way entangled fourpartite states.
We consider the problem of characterizing states of a multipartite quantum system from restricted, quasi-local information, with emphasis on uniquely determined pure states. By leveraging tools from dissipative quantum control theory, we show how the search for states consistent with an assigned list of reduced density matrices may be restricted to a proper subspace, which is determined solely by their supports. The existence of a quasi-local observable which attains its unique minimum over such a subspace further provides a sufficient criterion for a pure state to be uniquely determined by it…
We show that a generic $N$-qudit pure quantum state is uniquely determined by only $2$ of its $\lceil\frac{N+1}{2}\rceil$-particle reduced density matrices. Therefore we give a method to uniquely determine a generic $N$-qudit pure state of dimension $D=d^N$ with $O(D)$ local measurements, which is an improvement comparing with the previous known approach using $O(D\log^2 D)$ or $O(D\log D)$ measurements.
Device-independent self-testing allows to uniquely characterize the quantum state shared by untrusted parties (up to local isometries) by simply inspecting their correlations, and requiring only minimal assumptions, namely a no-signaling constraint on the untrusted parties and the validity of quantum mechanics. The device-independent approach exploits the fact that certain non-local correlations can be uniquely achieved by measurements on a particular quantum state. We can think of these correlations as a "classical fingerprint" of the self-tested quantum state. In this work, we answer affirma…
We can uniquely calculate almost all entangled state vectors of tripartite systems ABC if we know the reduced states of any two bipartite subsystems, e.g., of AB and of BC. We construct the explicit solution.
We discuss the uniqueness of quantum states compatible with given results for measuring a set of observables. For a given pure state, we consider two different types of uniqueness: (1) no other pure state is compatible with the same measurement results and (2) no other state, pure or mixed, is compatible with the same measurement results. For case (1), it is known that for a d-dimensional Hilbert space, there exists a set of 4d-5 observables that uniquely determines any pure state. We show that for case (2), 5d-7 observables suffice to uniquely determine any pure state. Thus there is a gap bet…
Various parameterizations for the orbits under local unitary transformations of three-qubit pure states are analyzed. The interconvertibility, symmetry properties, parameter ranges, calculability and behavior under measurement are looked at. It is shown that the entanglement monotones of any multipartite pure state uniquely determine the orbit of that state under local unitary transformations. It follows that there must be an entanglement monotone for three-qubit pure states which depends on the Kempe invariant defined in [Phys. Rev. A 60, 910 (1999)]. A form for such an entanglement monotone …
We prove that the most general W class of N-qubit states are uniquely determined among arbitrary states (pure or mixed) by just their bipartite reduced density matrices. Moreover, if we consider only pure states, then (N-1) of them are shown to be sufficient.
Ordering physical states is the key to quantifying some physical property of the states uniquely. Bipartite pure entangled states are totally ordered under local operations and classical communication (LOCC) in the asymptotic limit and uniquely quantified by the well-known entropy of entanglement. However, we show that mixed entangled states are partially ordered under LOCC even in the asymptotic limit. Therefore, non-uniqueness of entanglement measure is understood on the basis of an operational notion of asymptotic convertibility.
We present a geometric approach to the characterization of separability and entanglement in pure Gaussian states of an arbitrary number of modes. The analysis is performed adapting to continuous variables a formalism based on single subsystem unitary transformations that has been recently introduced to characterize separability and entanglement in pure states of qubits and qutrits [arXiv:0706.1561]. In analogy with the finite-dimensional case, we demonstrate that the $1 \times M$ bipartite entanglement of a multimode pure Gaussian state can be quantified by the minimum squared Euclidean distan…
A novel use of Majorana geometric representation brings out distinct entanglement families of permutation symmetric states of qubits. The paradigmatic W and GHZ (Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger) states of three qubits respectively contain two and three independent Majorana spinors. Another unique state with three distinct Majorana spinors -- constructed through a permutation symmetric superposition of two up qubits and one down qubit (W state) and its obverse state Wbar) exhibits genuine three-party entanglement, which is robust under loss of a qubit. While the GHZ state has irreducible correlatio…
It is shown that generic N-party pure quantum states (with equidimensional subsystems) are uniquely determined by their reduced states of just over half the parties; in other words, all the information in almost all N-party pure states is in the set of reduced states of just over half the parties. For N even, the reduced states in fewer than N/2 parties are shown to be an insufficient description of almost all states (similar results hold when N is odd). It is noted that Real Algebraic Geometry is a natural framework for any analysis of parts of quantum states: two simple polynomials, a quadra…
Following the idea of the continuity approach in [D. L. Zhou, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 180505 (2008)], we obtain the degrees of irreducible multi-party correlations in two families of $n$-qutrit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger type states. For the pure states in one of the families, the irreducible 2-party, $n$-party and $(n-m)$-party ($0< m < n-2$) correlations are nonzero, which is different from the $n$-qubit case. We also derive the correlation distributions in the $n$-qutrit maximal slice state, which can be uniquely determined by its $(n-1)$-qutrit reduced density matrices among pure states. It…
Multipartite quantum states that cannot be uniquely determined by their reduced states of all proper subsets of the parties exhibit some inherit `high-order' correlation. This paper elaborates this issue by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for a pure multipartite state to be locally undetermined, and moreover, characterizing precisely all the pure states sharing the same set of reduced states with it. Interestingly, local determinability of pure states is closely related to a generalized notion of Schmidt decomposition. Furthermore, we find that locally undetermined states have some …
We characterize the entanglement contained in a pure three-qubit state via operational entanglement measures. To this end we derive a new decomposition for arbitrary 3-qubit states which is characterized by five parameters (up to local unitary operations). We show that these parameters are uniquely determined by bipartite entanglement measures. These quantities measure on the one hand the entanglement required to generate the state and on the other hand the entanglement contained in the state and have a clear physical meaning. Moreover, we show that the classification of states obtained in thi…
Using techniques from symplectic geometry, we prove that a pure state of three qubits is up to local unitaries uniquely determined by its one-particle reduced density matrices exactly when their ordered spectra belong to the boundary of the, so called, Kirwan polytope. Otherwise, the states with given reduced density matrices are parameterized, up to local unitary equivalence, by two real variables. Given inevitable experimental imprecisions, this means that already for three qubits a pure quantum state can never be reconstructed from single-particle tomography. We moreover show that knowledge…
