We consider the problem of characterizing states of a multipartite quantum system from restricted, quasi-local information, with emphasis on uniquely determined pure states. By leveraging tools from dissipative quantum control theory, we show how the search for states consistent with an assigned list of reduced density matrices may be restricted to a proper subspace, which is determined solely by their supports. The existence of a quasi-local observable which attains its unique minimum over such a subspace further provides a sufficient criterion for a pure state to be uniquely determined by its reduced states. While the condition that a pure state is uniquely determined is necessary for it to arise as a non-degenerate ground state of a quasi-local Hamiltonian, we prove the opposite implication to be false in general, by exhibiting an explicit analytic counterexample. We show how the problem of determining whether a quasi-local parent Hamiltonian admitting a given pure state as its unique ground state is dual, in the sense of semidefinite programming, to the one of determining whether such a state is uniquely determined by the quasi-local information. Failure of this dual program to attain its optimal value is what prevents these two classes of states to coincide.
Groverian and Geometric entanglement measures of the n-party pure state are expressed by the (n-1)-party reduced state density operator directly. This main theorem derives several important consequences. First, if two pure n-qudit states have reduced states of (n-1)-qudits, which are equivalent under local unitary(LU) transformations, then they have equal Groverian and Geometric entanglement measures. Second, both measures have an upper bound for pure states. However, this upper bound is reached only for two qubit systems. Third, it converts effectively the nonlinear eigenvalue problem for thr…
We show that a generic $N$-qudit pure quantum state is uniquely determined by only $2$ of its $\lceil\frac{N+1}{2}\rceil$-particle reduced density matrices. Therefore we give a method to uniquely determine a generic $N$-qudit pure state of dimension $D=d^N$ with $O(D)$ local measurements, which is an improvement comparing with the previous known approach using $O(D\log^2 D)$ or $O(D\log D)$ measurements.
Device-independent self-testing allows to uniquely characterize the quantum state shared by untrusted parties (up to local isometries) by simply inspecting their correlations, and requiring only minimal assumptions, namely a no-signaling constraint on the untrusted parties and the validity of quantum mechanics. The device-independent approach exploits the fact that certain non-local correlations can be uniquely achieved by measurements on a particular quantum state. We can think of these correlations as a "classical fingerprint" of the self-tested quantum state. In this work, we answer affirma…
We can uniquely calculate almost all entangled state vectors of tripartite systems ABC if we know the reduced states of any two bipartite subsystems, e.g., of AB and of BC. We construct the explicit solution.
We discuss the uniqueness of quantum states compatible with given results for measuring a set of observables. For a given pure state, we consider two different types of uniqueness: (1) no other pure state is compatible with the same measurement results and (2) no other state, pure or mixed, is compatible with the same measurement results. For case (1), it is known that for a d-dimensional Hilbert space, there exists a set of 4d-5 observables that uniquely determines any pure state. We show that for case (2), 5d-7 observables suffice to uniquely determine any pure state. Thus there is a gap bet…
We derive an analytic approximation for the concurrence of weakly mixed bipartite quantum states - typical objects in state of the art experiments. This approximation is shown to be a lower bound of the concurrence of arbitrary states.
For triples of probability measures, pure quantum states and mixed quantum states we obtain the exact constraints on the fidelities of pairs in the sequence. We show that it is impossible to decide between a quantum model, either pure or mixed, and a classical model on the basis of the fidelities alone. Next, we introduce a quantum three state invariant called phase and show that any sequence of pure quantum states is uniquely reconstructible given the fidelities and phases.
Various parameterizations for the orbits under local unitary transformations of three-qubit pure states are analyzed. The interconvertibility, symmetry properties, parameter ranges, calculability and behavior under measurement are looked at. It is shown that the entanglement monotones of any multipartite pure state uniquely determine the orbit of that state under local unitary transformations. It follows that there must be an entanglement monotone for three-qubit pure states which depends on the Kempe invariant defined in [Phys. Rev. A 60, 910 (1999)]. A form for such an entanglement monotone …
Employing the general BXOR operation and local state discrimination, the mixed state of the form ρ^{(k)}_{d}=\frac{1}{d^{2}}\sum_{m,n=0}^{d-1}(|ϕ_{mn}><ϕ_{mn}|)^{\otim es k} is proved to be quasi-pure, where $\{|ϕ_{mn}>\}$ is the canonical set of mutually orthogonal maximally entangled states in $d\times d$. Therefore irreversibility does not occur in the process of distillation for this family of states. Also, the distillable entanglement is calculated explicitly.
If the unitary quantum mechanical state evolution is universally valid, quantized systems evolve uniformly, deterministically, and reversible; that is, one-to-one. Hence, what is considered an irreversible measurement might be a purely subjective, conventional, and convenient abstraction of the situation that, although in principal totally reversible, for all practical purposes (fapp), measurements cannot be undone. If this is granted, then Schroedinger's "quantum jellification" arises because of the inevitability of the physical co-existence of classically mutually exclusive states through qu…
This paper shows that an arbitrary Gaussian pure state can be deterministically generated in a dissipative open system that has quasi-local interactions between the subsystems and couples to surrounding environment in a local manner. A quasi-local interaction, which means that the interaction occurs among only a few subsystems, is a crucial requirement for practical engineering of a dissipative system. The key idea is that, first, an auxiliary system having local interaction with environment is prepared, and then that auxiliary system is coupled to the underlying target system via a set of two…
We prove that the most general W class of N-qubit states are uniquely determined among arbitrary states (pure or mixed) by just their bipartite reduced density matrices. Moreover, if we consider only pure states, then (N-1) of them are shown to be sufficient.
We propose a general framework of the quantum/quasi-classical transformations by introducing the concept of quasi-joint-spectral distribution (QJSD). Specifically, we show that the QJSDs uniquely yield various pairs of quantum/quasi-classical transformations, including the Wigner-Weyl transform. We also discuss the statistical behaviour of combinations of generally non-commutin quantum observables by introducing the concept of quantum correlations and conditional expectations defined analogously to the classical counterpart. Based on these, Aharonov's weak value is given a statistical interpre…
Extracting information from quantum devices has long been a crucial problem in the field of quantum mechanics. By performing elaborate measurements, quantum state tomography, an important and fundamental tool in quantum science and technology, can be used to determine unknown quantum states completely. In this study, we explore methods to determine multi-qubit pure quantum states uniquely and directly. Two adaptive protocols are proposed, with their respective quantum circuits. Herein, two or three observables are sufficient, while the number of measurement outcomes is either the same as or fe…
We present a geometric approach to the characterization of separability and entanglement in pure Gaussian states of an arbitrary number of modes. The analysis is performed adapting to continuous variables a formalism based on single subsystem unitary transformations that has been recently introduced to characterize separability and entanglement in pure states of qubits and qutrits [arXiv:0706.1561]. In analogy with the finite-dimensional case, we demonstrate that the $1 \times M$ bipartite entanglement of a multimode pure Gaussian state can be quantified by the minimum squared Euclidean distan…
We introduce a new kind of quantum measurement that is defined to be symmetric in the sense of uniform Fisher information across a set of parameters that injectively represent pure quantum states in the neighborhood of a fiducial pure state. The measurement is locally informationally complete---i.e., it uniquely determines these parameters, as opposed to distinguishing two arbitrary quantum states---and it is maximal in the sense of a multi-parameter quantum Cramer-Rao bound. For a $d$-dimensional quantum system, requiring only local informational completeness allows us to reduce the number of…
The generalized n-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and their local unitary equivalents are the only states of n qubits that are not uniquely determined among pure states by their reduced density matrices of n-1 qubits. Thus, among pure states, the generalized GHZ states are the only ones containing information at the n-party level. We point out a connection between local unitary stabilizer subgroups and the property of being determined by reduced density matrices.
In the present paper we study quasi quantum quadratic operators (q.q.o) acting on the algebra of $2\times 2$ matrices $M_2(C)$. It is known that a channel is called pure if it sends pure states to pure ones. In this papers, we introduce a weaker condition, called $q$-purity, than purity of the channel. To study $q$-pure channels, we concentrate ourselves to quasi q.q.o. acting on $M_2(C)$. We describe all trace-preserving quasi q.q.o. on $M_2(C)$, which allowed us to prove that if a trace-preserving symmetric quasi q.q.o. such that the corresponding quadratic operator is linear, then its $q$-p…
We examine the problem of finding the minimum number of Pauli measurements needed to uniquely determine an arbitrary $n$-qubit pure state among all quantum states. We show that only $11$ Pauli measurements are needed to determine an arbitrary two-qubit pure state compared to the full quantum state tomography with $16$ measurements, and only $31$ Pauli measurements are needed to determine an arbitrary three-qubit pure state compared to the full quantum state tomography with $64$ measurements. We demonstrate that our protocol is robust under depolarizing error with simulated random pure states. …
It is shown that generic N-party pure quantum states (with equidimensional subsystems) are uniquely determined by their reduced states of just over half the parties; in other words, all the information in almost all N-party pure states is in the set of reduced states of just over half the parties. For N even, the reduced states in fewer than N/2 parties are shown to be an insufficient description of almost all states (similar results hold when N is odd). It is noted that Real Algebraic Geometry is a natural framework for any analysis of parts of quantum states: two simple polynomials, a quadra…
We show that generic pure states (states drawn according to the Haar measure) of four particles of equal internal dimension are uniquely determined among all other pure states by their two-body marginals. In fact, certain subsets of three of the two-body marginals suffice for the characterization. We also discuss generalizations of the statement to pure states of more particles, showing that these are almost always determined among pure states by three of their $(n-2)$-body marginals. Finally, we present special families of symmetric pure four-particle states that share the same two-body margi…
We investigate whether a generic multipartite pure state can be the unique asymptotic steady state of locality-constrained purely dissipative Markovian dynamics. In the simplest tripartite setting, we show that the problem is equivalent to characterizing the solution space of a set of linear equations and establish that the set of pure states obeying the above property has either measure zero or measure one, solely depending on the subsystems' dimension. A complete analytical characterization is given when the central subsystem is a qubit. In the N-partite case, we provide conditions on the su…
Using techniques from symplectic geometry, we prove that a pure state of three qubits is up to local unitaries uniquely determined by its one-particle reduced density matrices exactly when their ordered spectra belong to the boundary of the, so called, Kirwan polytope. Otherwise, the states with given reduced density matrices are parameterized, up to local unitary equivalence, by two real variables. Given inevitable experimental imprecisions, this means that already for three qubits a pure quantum state can never be reconstructed from single-particle tomography. We moreover show that knowledge…
It is well known that for pure states the relative entropy of entanglement is equal to the reduced entropy, and the closest separable state is explicitly known as well. The same holds for Renyi relative entropy per recent results. We ask the same question for a quasi-relative entropy of entanglement, which is an entanglement measure defined as the minimum distance to the set of separable state, when the distance is measured by the quasi-relative entropy. First, we consider a maximally entangled state, and show that the closest separable state is the same for any quasi-relative entropy as for t…
We classify automorphisms on quantum chains, allowing both spin and fermionic degrees of freedom, that are moreover equivariant with respect to a local symmetry action of a finite symmetry group $G$. The classification is up to equivalence through strongly continuous deformation and stacking with decoupled auxiliary automorphisms. We find that the equivalence classes are uniquely labeled by an index taking values in $\mathbb{Q} \cup \sqrt{2} \mathbb{Q} \times \mathrm{Hom}(G, \mathbb{Z}_2) \times H^2(G, U(1))$. We discuss te relation of this index to the index of one-dimensional symmetry protec…
