The realization of a cavity soliton laser using a vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor gain structure coupled to an external cavity with a frequency-selective element is reported. All-optical control of bistable solitonic emission states representing small microlasers is demonstrated by injection of an external beam. The control scheme is phase-insensitive and hence expected to be robust for all-optical processing applications. The motility of these structures is also demonstrated.
We propose a hybrid soliton-based system consisting of a centrosymmetric photorefractive crystal, supporting photorefractive solitons, coupled to a vertical cavity surface emitting laser, supporting multistable cavity solitons. The composite nature of the system, which couples a propagative/conservative field dynamics to a stationary/dissipative one, allows to observe a more general and unified system phenomenology and to conceive novel photonic functionalities. The potential of the proposed hybrid system becomes clear when investigating the generation and control of cavity solitons by propaga…
We introduce a spin-flip model for a broad-area Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) with a saturable absorber. We demonstrate simultaneous existence of orthogonally linearly polarized and elliptically polarized cavity solitons. We show that polarization degree of freedom leads to period doubling route to spatially localized chaos of the elliptically polarized cavity solitons.
We experimentally and numerically study the use of intensity modulation for the controlled addressing of temporal Kerr cavity solitons. Using a coherently driven fiber ring resonator, we demonstrate that a single temporally broad intensity modulation pulse applied on the cavity driving field permits systematic and efficient writing and erasing of ultrashort cavity solitons. We use numerical simulations based on the mean-field Lugiato-Lefever model to investigate the addressing dynamics, and present a simple physical description of the underlying physics.
The relationship between carrier envelope phase (CEP) slip of cavity soliton (CS) and pump phase detuning is derived analytically and numerically. To preserve the stability of CS, CEP slip always equals to the pump phase detuning. When CEP slip fails to follow the pump phase detuning, CS becomes unstable. The locking between CEP slip and pump phase detuning results in a scaling law for CS.
We show that the nonlinear polarization dynamics of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser placed into an external cavity leads to the formation of temporal vectorial dissipative solitons. These solitons arise as cycles in the polarization orientation, leaving the total intensity constant. When the cavity round-trip is much longer than their duration, several independent solitons as well as bound states (molecules) may be hosted in the cavity. All these solutions coexist together and with the background solution, i.e. the solution with zero soliton. The theoretical proof of localization is g…
Based on self - consistent field theory we study a soliton generation in cw solid-state lasers with semiconductor saturable absorber. Various soliton destabilizations, i.e. the switch from femtosecond to picosecond generation (''picosecond collapse''), an automodulation regime, breakdown of soliton generation and hysteresis behavior, are predicted.
We report on an experimental and numerical study of temporal Kerr cavity soliton dynamics in dispersion-managed fiber ring resonators. We find that dispersion management can significantly magnify the Kelly-like resonant radiation sidebands emitted by the solitons. Because of the underlying phase-matching conditions, the sideband amplitudes tend to increase with increasing pump-cavity detuning, ultimately limiting the range of detunings over which the solitons can exist. Our experimental findings show excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
We report on the experimental observation of temporal cavity soliton destabilization via spatiotemporal chaos in a coherently-driven optical fiber ring resonator. Numerical simulations and theoretical analyses are in good agreement with experimental observations.
We report the existence, symmetry breaking and other instabilities of dark polariton-solitons in semiconductor microcavities operating in the strong coupling regime. These half-light half-matter solitons are potential candidates for applications in all-optical signal processing. Their excitation time and required pump powers are a few orders of magnitude less than those of their weakly coupled light-only counterparts.
We demonstrate the operation of an all-optical buffer based on temporal cavity solitons stored in a nonlinear passive fiber ring resonator. Unwanted acoustic interactions between neighboring solitons are suppressed by modulating the phase of the external laser driving the cavity. A new locking scheme is presented that allows the buffer to operate with an arbitrarily large number of cavity solitons in the loop. Experimentally, we are able to demonstrate the storage of 4536 bits of data, written all-optically into the fiber ring at 10 Gb/s, for 1 minute.
Temporal cavity solitons in ring microresonators provide broad and controllable generation of frequency combs with applications in frequency standards and precise atomic clocks. Three level media in the Λ configuration inside microresonators displaying electromagnetically induced transparency can be used for the generation of temporal cavity solitons and frequency combs in the presence of anomalous dispersion and two external driving fields close to resonance. Here, domain walls separating regions of two dark states due to quantum interference correspond to realizations of stimulated Raman adi…
We report on a systematic study of temporal Kerr cavity soliton dynamics in the presence of pulsed or amplitude modulated driving fields. In stark contrast to the more extensively studied case of phase modulations, we find that Kerr cavity solitons are not always attracted to maxima or minima of driving field amplitude inhomogeneities. Instead, we find that the solitons are attracted to temporal positions associated with specific driving field values that depend only on the cavity detuning. We describe our findings in light of a spontaneous symmetry breaking instability that physically ensues …
We report on the experimental observation of coherent cavity soliton frequency combs in silica microspheres. Specifically, we demonstrate that careful alignment of the microsphere relative to the coupling fiber taper allows for the suppression of higher-order spatial modes, reducing mode interactions and enabling soliton formation. Our measurements show that the temporal cavity solitons have sub-100-fs durations, exhibit considerable Raman self-frequency shift, and generally come in groups of three or four, occasionally with equidistant spacing in the time domain. RF amplitude noise measuremen…
We demonstrate the generation of counter-rotating cavity solitons in a silicon nitride microresonator using a fixed, single-frequency laser. We demonstrate a dual 3-soliton state with a difference in the repetition rates of the soliton trains that can be tuned by varying the ratio of pump powers in the two directions. Such a system enables a highly compact, tunable dual comb source that can be used for applications such as spectroscopy and distance ranging.
Ultrafast atomic vibrations mediate heat transport, serve as fingerprints for chemical bonds and drive phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Light pulses shorter than the atomic oscillation period can not only probe, but even stimulate and control collective excitations. In general, such interactions are performed with free-propagating pulses. Here, we demonstrate intra-cavity excitation and time-domain sampling of coherent optical phonons inside an active laser oscillator. Employing real-time spectral interferometry, we reveal that Terahertz beats of Raman-active optical phonons can …
By integrating the full Maxwell's equations we predict the existence of gap solitons in a quadratic, Fabry-Perot negative index cavity. An intense, fundamental pump pulse shifts the band structure that forms when magnetic and electric plasma frequencies are different so that a weak, second harmonic pulse initially tuned inside the gap is almost entirely transmitted. The process is due cascading, which occurs far from phase matching conditions, and causes pulse compression. A nonlinear polarization spawns a dark soliton, while a nonlinear magnetization produces a bright soliton.
We present theoretical and experimental evidence of a universal mechanism through which temporal cavity solitons of externally-driven, passive, Kerr resonators can form robust long-range bound states. These bound states, sometime also referred to as multi-soliton states or soliton crystals in microresonators, require perturbations to the strict Lugiato-Lefever mean field description of temporal cavity solitons. Binding occurs when the perturbation excites a narrowband resonance in the soliton spectrum, which gives long oscillatory tails to the solitons. Those tails can then interlock for a dis…
We report on experimental observation of localized structures in two mutually coupled broad-areahttp://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/images/calendar.gif semiconductor resonators. These structures coexist with a dark homogeneous background and they have the same properties as cavity solitons without requiring the presence of a driving beam into the system. They can be switched individually on and off by means of a local addressing beam.
We introduce a new class of self-sustained states, which may exist as single solitons or form multisoliton clusters, in driven passive cylindrical microresonators. Remarkably, such states are stabilized by the radiation they emit, which strongly breaks spatial symmetry and leads to the appearance of long polychromatic conical tails. The latter induce long-range soliton interactions that make possible the formation of clusters, which can be stable if their spatial arrangement is non-collinear with the soliton rotation direction in the microcavity. The clusters are intrinsically two-dimensional …
Dissipative Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently driven nonlinear optical resonators. They have attracted significant attention over the past decade due to their rich nonlinear dynamics and key role in the generation of coherent microresonator optical frequency combs. Whilst the vast majority of implementations have relied on \emph{homogeneous} continuous wave driving, the soliton's "plasticity" combined with \emph{inhomogeneous} driving offers attractive advantages for a host of applications. Here we review recent studies into the dynamics and applications o…
The field of micro-cavity based frequency combs, or 'micro-combs'[1,2], has recently witnessed many fundamental breakthroughs[3-19] enabled by the discovery of temporal cavity-solitons, self-localised waves sustained by a background of radiation usually containing 95% of the total power[20]. Simple methods for their efficient generation and control are currently researched to finally establish micro-combs as out-of-the-lab widespread tools[21]. Here we demonstrate micro-comb laser cavity-solitons, an intrinsically highly-efficient, background free class of solitary waves. Laser cavity-solitons…
We report on the observation of various bound states of dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber ring laser at near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion (GVD). The generated DM solitons are characterized by their Gaussian-like spectral profile with no sidebands, which is distinct from those of the conventional solitons generated in fiber lasers with large net negative cavity GVD, of the parabolic pulses generated in fiber lasers with positive cavity GVD and negligible gain saturation and bandwidth limiting, and of the gain-guided solitons generated in…
Supercontinuum generation in Kerr media has become a staple of nonlinear optics. It has been celebrated for advancing the understanding of soliton propagation as well as its many applications in a broad range of fields. Coherent spectral broadening of laser light is now commonly performed in laboratories and used in commercial white light sources. The prospect of miniaturizing the technology is currently driving experiments in different integrated platforms such as semiconductor on insulator waveguides. Central to the spectral broadening is the concept of higher-order soliton fission. While wi…
We show the formation of bright and dark slow optical solitons based on intersubband transitions in a semiconductor quantum well (SQW). Using the coupled Schrodinger-Maxwell approach, we provide both analytical and numerical results. Such a nonlinear optical process may be used for the control technology of optical delay lines and optical buffers in the SQW solid-state system. With appropriate parameters, we also show the generation of a large cross-phase modulation (XPM). Since the the intersubband energy level can be easily tuned by an external bias voltage, the present investigation may ope…
Temporal Kerr cavity solitons are pulses of light that can persist in coherently-driven, dispersive resonators with Kerr-type nonlinearity. It is widely accepted that such solitons react to parameter inhomogeneities by experiencing a temporal drift whose rate is governed by the gradient of the parameter at the soliton's position. This result, however, assumes that the gradient of the inhomogeneity is constant across the soliton, which may not hold true under all situations, e.g. when using bichromatic driving or in the presence of third-order dispersion that gives rise to an extended dispersiv…
Spatio-temporal dynamics of singly resonant optical parametric oscillators with external seeding displays hexagonal, roll and honeycomb patterns, optical turbulence, rogue waves and cavity solitons. We derive appropriate mean-field equations with a sinc$^2$ nonlinearity and demonstrate that off-resonance seeding is necessary and responsible for the formation of complex spatial structures via self-organization. We compare this model with those derived close to the threshold of signal generation and find that back-conversion of signal and idler photons is responsible for multiple regions of spat…
Vector soliton operation of erbium-doped fiber lasers mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated. Either the polarization rotation or polarization locked vector dissipative solitons were experimentally obtained in a dispersion-managed cavity fiber laser with large net cavity dispersion, while in the anomalous dispersion cavity fiber laser, the phase locked NLSE solitons and induced NLSE soliton were experimentally observed. The vector soliton operation of the fiber lasers unambiguously confirms the polarization insensitive saturable absorption of the atomic layer gr…
Temporal cavity solitons (CSs) are pulses of light that can persist endlessly in dispersive, nonlinear optical resonators. They have been extensively studied in the context of resonators with purely cubic (Kerr-type) nonlinearity that are externally-driven with a monochromatic continuous wave laser -- in such systems, the solitons manifest themselves as unique attractors whose carrier frequency coincides with that of the external driving field. Recent experiments have, however, shown that a qualitatively different type of temporal CS can arise via parametric down-conversion in resonators with …
We report on the experimental observation of spontaneous creation and annihilation of temporal cavity solitons (CSs) in a coherently-driven, macroscopic optical fiber resonator. Specifically, we show that CSs are spontaneously created when the frequency of the cavity driving field is tuned across a resonance, and that they can individually disappear at different stages of the scan. In contrast to previous experiments in monolithic microresonators, we are able to identify these dynamics in real time, thanks to the macroscopic dimensions of our resonator. Our experimental observations are in exc…
We address a pair of vertically coupled microring resonators with gain and loss pumped by a single-frequency field. Coupling between microrings results in a twofold splitting of the single microring resonance that increases when gain and losses decrease and that gives rise to two different cavity soliton (CS) families. We show that the existence regions of CSs are tunable and that both CS families can be stable in the presence of an imbalance between gain and losses in the two microrings. These findings enable experimental realization of frequency combs in configurations with active microrings…
We consider a wide-aperture surface-emitting laser with a saturable absorber section subjected to time-delayed feedback. We adopt the mean-field approach assuming a single longitudinal mode operation of the solitary VCSEL. We investigate cavity soliton dynamics under the effect of time- delayed feedback in a self-imaging configuration where diffraction in the external cavity is negligible. Using bifurcation analysis, direct numerical simulations and numerical path continuation methods, we identify the possible bifurcations and map them in a plane of feedback parameters. We show that for both t…
We report on the experimental observation of induced solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber ring laser with birefringence cavity. Due to the cross coupling between the two orthogonal polarization components of the laser, it was found that if a soliton was formed along one cavity polarization axis, a weak soliton was also induced along the orthogonal polarization axis, and depending on the net cavity birefringence, the induced soliton could either have the same or different center wavelengths to that of the inducing soliton. Moreover, the induced soliton always had the same group velocity as…
We experimentally demonstrate the existence of non dispersive solitary waves associated with a 2$π$ phase rotation in a strongly multimode ring semiconductor laser with coherent forcing. Similarly to Bloch domain walls, such structures host a chiral charge. The numerical simulations based on a set of effective Maxwell-Bloch equations support the experimental evidence that only one sign of chiral charge is stable, which strongly affects the motion of the phase solitons. Furthermore, the reduction of the model to a modified Ginzburg Landau equation with forcing demonstrates the generality of the…
Optical frequency comb, with precisely controlled spectral lines spanning a broad range, has been the key enabling technology for many scientific breakthroughs. In addition to the traditional implementation based on modelocked lasers, photonic frequency microcombs based on dissipative Kerr and quadratic cavity solitons in high-Q microresonators have become invaluable in applications requiring compact footprint, low cost, good energy efficiency, large comb spacing, and access to nonconventional spectral regions. In this review, we comprehensively examine the recent progress of photonic frequenc…
We demonstrate self-started mode-locking in an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser by using the nonlinear polarization rotation mode-locking technique but without an isolator in cavity. We show that due to the intrinsic effective nonlinearity discrimination of the mode-locked pulse propagating along different cavity directions, the soliton operation of the laser is always unidirectional, and its features have no difference to that of the unidirectional lasers with an isolator in cavity.
Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-organized optical waves arising from the interplay between Kerr effect and dispersion. They can form spontaneously in nonlinear microresonators pumped with an external continuous-wave laser, which provides the parametric gain for the proliferation of an ultrastable frequency comb. These miniaturized and battery driven microcombs have become a disruptive technology for precision metrology, broadband telecommunication and ultrafast optical ranging. In this work, we report on the first experimental observation of dissipative Kerr solitons generated in a ring cav…
We report a comprehensive study of low-power, octave-bandwidth, single-soliton microresonator frequency combs in both the 1550 nm and 1064 nm bands. Our experiments utilize fully integrated silicon-nitride Kerr microresonators, and we demonstrate direct soliton generation with widely available distributed-Bragg-reflector lasers that provide less than 40 mW of chip-coupled laser power. We report measurements of soliton thermal dynamics and demonstrate how rapid laser-frequency control, consistent with the thermal timescale of a microresonator, facilitates stabilization of octave-bandwidth solit…
We introduce a one-dimensional model of a cavity with the Kerr nonlinearity and saturated gain, designed so as to keep solitons in the state of shuttle motion. The solitons are always unstable in the cavity bounded by the usual potential barriers, due to accumulation of noise generated by the linear gain. Complete stabilization of the shuttling soliton is achieved if the linear barrier potentials are replaced by nonlinear ones, which trap the soliton, being transparent to the radiation. The removal of the noise from the cavity is additionally facilitated by an external ramp potential. The stab…
We examine a coherently-driven, dispersion-managed, passive Kerr fiber ring resonator and report the first direct experimental observation of dispersive wave emission by temporal cavity solitons. Our observations are in excellent agreement with analytical predictions and they are fully corroborated by numerical simulations. These results lead to a better understanding of the behavior of temporal cavity solitons under conditions where higher-order dispersion plays a significant role. Significantly, since temporal cavity solitons manifest themselves in monolithic microresonators, our results are…
We report on the experimental observation of two types of phase-locked vector soliton in weakly birefringent cavity erbium-doped fiber lasers. While a phase-locked dark-dark vector soliton was only observed in fiber lasers of positive dispersion, a phase-locked dark-bright vector soliton was obtained in fiber lasers of either positive or negative dispersion. Numerical simulations confirmed the experimental observations, and further showed that the observed vector solitons are the two types of phase-locked polarization domain-wall solitons theoretically predicted.
We report on the experimental observation of bunching dynamics with temporal cavity solitons in a continuously-driven passive fibre resonator. Specifically, we excite a large number of ultrafast cavity solitons with random temporal separations, and observe in real time how the initially random sequence self-organizes into regularly-spaced aggregates. To explain our experimental observations, we develop a simple theoretical model that allows long-range acoustically-induced interactions between a large number of temporal cavity solitons to be simulated. Significantly, results from our simulation…
We report a theoretical investigation of quadratic frequency combs in a dispersive second-harmonic generation cavity system. We identify different dynamical regimes and demonstrate that the same system can exhibit both bright and dark localized cavity solitons in the absence of a temporal walk-off.
We show that the ultrashort cavity soliton in octave-spanning Kerr frequency comb generation exhibits striking self-adaptiveness and robustness to external perturbations, resulting in a novel frequency shifting/cancellation mechanism and gigantic dispersive wave generation in response to the strong frequency dependence of Kerr nonlinearity, Raman scattering, chromatic dispersion, and cavity Q. These observations open up a great avenue towards versatile manipulation of nonlinear soliton dynamics, flexible spectrum engineering of mode-locked Kerr frequency combs, and highly efficient frequency t…
Temporal cavity solitons (CSs) are persisting pulses of light that can manifest themselves in continuously driven passive resonators, such as macroscopic fiber ring cavities and monolithic microresonators. Experiments so far have demonstrated two techniques for their excitation, yet both possess drawbacks in the form of system complexity or lack of control over soliton positioning. Here we experimentally demonstrate a new CS writing scheme that alleviates these deficiencies. Specifically, we show that temporal CSs can be excited at arbitrary positions through direct phase modulation of the cav…
A novel concept of self-phasematched optical frequency conversion in dispersive dielectric microcavities is studied theoretically and experimentally. We develop a time-dependent model, incorporating the dispersion into the structure of the spatial cavity modes and translating the phasematching requirement into the optimization of a nonlinear cavity mode overlap. We design and fabricate integrated double-resonance semiconductor microcavities for self-phasematched second harmonic generation. The measured efficiency exhibits a significant maximum near the cavity resonance due to the intra-cavity …
We propose a setup to observe soliton ratchet effects using discrete cavity solitons in a one-dimensional array of coupled waveguide optical resonators. The net motion of solitons can be generated by an adiabatic shaking of the holding beam with zero average inclination angle. The resulting soliton velocity can be controlled by different parameters of the holding beam.
