Arithmetic of K3 surfaces defined over finite fields is investigated. In particular, we show that any K3 surface of finite height over a finite field k of characteristic p > 3 has a quasi-canonical lifting to characteristic 0, and that for any such lifting, the endormorphism algebra of the transcendental cycles, as a Hodge module, is a CM field. The Tate conjecture for the product of certain two K3 surfaces is also proved. We illustrate by examples how to determine explicitly the formal Brauer group associated to a K3 surface over k. Examples discussed here are all of hypergeometric type.
We construct a quasi-canonical lifting of a $K3$ surface of finite height over a finite field of characteristic $p\geq3$. Such results are previously obtained by Nygaard-Ogus when $p\geq5$. For this purpose, we use the display-theoretic deformation theory developed by Langer, Zink, and Lau. We study the display structure of the crystalline cohomology of deformations of a $K3$ surface of finite height in terms of the Dieudonné display of the enlarged formal Brauer group.
In this paper we consider the following problem: For a given natural number $d$ and a prime $p$ determine all Newton polygons of polarized K3 surfaces of degree 2d over fields of characteristic $p$. This is an analogue of the Manin problem for Newton polygons of abelian varieties. This question is equivalent to determining the non-empty height strata of the moduli stack $\M_{2d}\otimes \F_p$ of K3 surfaces with a polarization of degree 2d over $\F_p$. We prove here that if $d$ is large enough and prime to $p$, then the height strata of $\M_{2d}\otimes \F_p$ are non-empty.
In this article we prove a fundamental inequality between Artin-Mazur heights and Yobuko heights of certain proper log smooth schemes of Cartier type over a fine log scheme whose underlying scheme is the spectrum of a perfect field $κ$ of characteristic $p>0$. We also prove that the cohomologies of Witt-sheaves of them are finitely generated ${\cal W}(κ)$-modules if the Yobuko heights of them are finite. As an application, we prove that the $p$-primary torsion parts of the Chow groups of codimension $2$ of proper smooth threefolds over $κ$ is of finite cotype if the Yobuko heights of them are …
For line bundles on arithmetic varieties we construct height functions using arithmetic intersection theory. In the case of an arithmetic surface, generically of genus g, for line bundles of degree g equivalence is shown to the height on the Jacobian defined by the Theta divisor.
In an earlier paper by the first author, an argument for the nonexistence of canonical vector heights on K3 surfaces of Picard number three was given, based on an explicit surface that was not proved to have Picard number three. In this paper, we fill the gap in the argument by redoing the computations for another explicit surface for which we prove that the Picard number equals three. The conclusion remains unchanged.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. In this paper we use conic bundles to obtain correct lower bounds or a wide class of surfaces over number fields for which the conjecture is still far from being proved. For example, we obtain the conjectured lower bound of Manin's conjecture for any del Pezzo surface whose Picard rank is sufficiently large, or for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces after possibly an extension of the ground field of small degree.
In this note, we propose the modular height of an abelian variety defined over a field of finite type over Q. Moreover, we prove its finiteness property.
We give a mathematical structure on an arithmetic surface, that has algebraic meanings over finite places and can estimate the canonical norm for a relative differential form on the arithmetic surface. This will give a lower bound for the canonical norm for a relative differential form on an arithmetic surface, which proves a Height Inequality on the arithmetic surface.
We consider heights of horizontal irreducible divisors on an arithmetic surface with respect to some hermitian line bundle. We obtain both lower and upper bounds for these heights. The results are different and sometimes stronger that those of S.Zhang on the same question. The case of the relative dualizing sheaf with the Arakelov metric is made especially explicit.
In this paper, we propose a new height function for a variety defined over a finitely generated field over Q. For this height function, we will prove Northcott's theorem and Bogomolov's conjecture, so that we can recover the original Raynaud's theorem (Manin-Mumford's conjecture).
This paper is the sequel of our paper "Arithmetic height functions over finitely generated fields" (cf. math.NT/9809016). In this paper, we define the canonical height of subvarieties of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field over Q. We also prove that the canonical height of a subvariety is zero if and only if it is a translation of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point.
We show that the height of a variety over a finitely generated field of characteristic zero can be written as an integral of local heights over the set of places of the field. This allows us to apply our previous work on toric varieties and extend our combinatorial formulae for the height to compute some arithmetic intersection numbers of non toric arithmetic varieties over the rational numbers.
For each of n=1,2,3 we find the minimal height h^(P) of a nontorsion point P of an elliptic curve E over C(T) of discriminant degree d=12n (equivalently, of arithmetic genus n), and exhibit all (E,P) attaining this minimum. The minimal h^(P) was known to equal 1/30 for n=1 (Oguiso-Shioda) and 11/420 for n=2 (Nishiyama), but the formulas for the general (E,P) were not known, nor was the fact that these are also the minima for an elliptic curve of discriminant degree 12n over a function field of any genus. For n=3 both the minimal height (23/840) and the explicit curves are new. These (E,P) also…
Let $K$ be a 1-dimensional function field over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and let $A/K$ be an abelian surface. Under mild assumptions, we prove a Lehmer-type lower bound for points in $A(\bar{K})$. More precisely, we prove that there are constants $C_1,C_2>0$ such that the normalized Bernoulli-part of the canonical height is bounded below by $$ \hat{h}_A^{\mathbb{B}}(P) \ge C_1\bigl[K(P):K\bigr]^{-2} $$ for all points $P\in{A(\bar{K})}$ whose height satisfies $0<\hat{h}_A(P)\le{C_2}$.
A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin predicts the asymptotic behaviour of rational points of bounded height on smooth projective varieties over number fields. We prove some new cases of this conjecture for conic bundle surfaces equipped with some non-anticanonical height functions. As a special case, we verify these conjectures for the first time for some smooth cubic surfaces for height functions associated to certain ample line bundles.
In this paper we give a characterization of the height of K3 surfaces in positive characteristic. This enables us to calculate the cycle classes of the loci in families of K3 surfaces where the height is at least h. The formulas for such loci can be seen as generalizations of the famous formula of Deuring for the number of supersingular elliptic curves in positive characteristic. In order to describe the tangent spaces to these loci we study the first cohomology of higher closed forms.
In this paper the height zeta function associated to a certain singular del Pezzo surface of degree four is studied. If $U$ denotes the open subset formed by deleting the unique line from this surface, then an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on $U$ is established which verifies the Manin conjecture.
The purpose of this paper is to give a linear and effective height inequality for algebraic points on curves over functional fields. Our height inequality can be viewed as the logarithmic canonical class inequality of a punctured curve over a functional field (a fibered surface minus a section).
We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something n…
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
We obtain a Bogomolov type of result for the additive group scheme in characteristic $p$. Our result is equivalent with a Bogomolov theorem for Drinfeld modules defined over a finite field.
