Let $E\subset R^d$ with $H^n(E)<\infty$, where H^n stands for the $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. In this paper we prove that E is n-rectifiable if and only if the limit $$\lim_{\ve\to0}\int_{y\in E:|x-y|>\ve} \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} dH^n(y)$$ exists H^n-almost everywhere in E. To prove this result we obtain precise estimates from above and from below for the $L^2$ norm of the n-dimensional Riesz transforms on Lipschitz graphs.
For 0<n<d integers and r>2, we prove that an n-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular measure M in R^d is uniformly n-rectifiable if and only if the r-variation for the Riesz transform with respect to M is a bounded operator in L^2(M). This result can be considered as a partial solution to a well known open problem posed by G. David and S. Semmes which relates the L^2(M) boundedness of the Riesz transform to the uniform rectifiability of M.
We prove that if $μ$ is a d-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular measure in $\R^{d+1}$, then the boundedness of the $d$-dimensional Riesz transform in $L^2(μ)$ implies that the non-BAUP David-Semmes cells form a Carleson family. Combined with earlier results of David and Semmes, this yields the uniform rectifiability of $μ$.
Let $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be a closed, Ahlfors-David regular set of dimension $n$ satisfying the "Riesz Transform bound" $$\sup_{\varepsilon>0}\int_E\left|\int_{\{y\in E:|x-y|>\varepsilon\}}\frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} f(y) dH^n(y)\right|^2 dH^n(x) \leq C \int_E|f|^2 dH^n .$$ Assume further that $E$ is the boundary of a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ satisfying the Harnack Chain condition plus an interior (but not exterior) Corkscrew condition. Then $E$ is uniformly rectifiable.
We show that, given a set $E\subset \mathbb R^{n+1}$ with finite $n$-Hausdorff measure $H^n$, if the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $$R_{H^n|E} f(x) = \int_{E} \frac{x-y}{|x-y|^{n+1}} f(y) dH^n(y)$$ is bounded in $L^2(H^n|E)$, then $E$ is $n$-rectifiable. From this result we deduce that a compact set $E\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with $H^n(E)<\infty$ is removable for Lipschitz harmonic functions if and only if it is purely $n$-unrectifiable, thus proving the analog of Vitushkin's conjecture in higher dimensions.
In this paper we show that if $μ$ is a Borel measure in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with growth of order $n$, so that the $n$-dimensional Riesz transform $R_μ$ is bounded in $L^2(μ)$, and $B\subset\mathbb R^{n+1}$ is a ball with $μ(B)\approx r(B)^n$ such that: (a) there is some $n$-plane $L$ passing through the center of $B$ such that for some $δ>0$ small enough, it holds $\int_B \frac{dist(x,L)}{r(B)}\,dμ(x)\leq δ\,μ(B),$ (b) for some constant $ε>0$ small enough, $\int_B |R_\mu1(x) - m_{μ,B}(R_\mu1)|^2\,dμ(x) \leq ε\,μ(B)$, where $m_{μ,B}(R_\mu1)$ stands for the mean of $R_\mu1$ on $B$ with respect to …
We present the converse to a higher dimensional, scale-invariant version of a classical theorem of F. and M. Riesz. More precisely, for $n\geq 2$, for an ADR domain $Ω\subset \re^{n+1}$ which satisfies the Harnack Chain condition plus an interior (but not exterior) Corkscrew condition, we show that absolute continuity of harmonic measure with respect to surface measure on $\partialΩ$, with scale invariant higher integrability of the Poisson kernel, is sufficient to imply uniformly rectifiable of $\partialΩ$.
Let $E$ be an $1$-Ahlfors regular subset of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. We prove that there exists a $-1$-homogeneous kernel $K_1$ such that if $E$ is contained in a $1$-regular curve the corresponding singular integral is bounded in $L^2(E)$. Conversely, we prove that there exists another $-1$-homogeneous kernel $K_2$, such that the $L^2(E)$-boundedness of its corresponding singular integral implies that $E$ is contained in an $1$-regular curve. These are the first non-Euclidean examples of kernels with such properties. Both $K_1$ and $K_2$ are weighted versions of the Riesz kernel cor…
Let $E\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\ge 2$, be an Ahlfors-David regular set of dimension $n$. We show that the weak-$A_\infty$ property of harmonic measure, for the open set $Ω:= \mathbb{R}^{n+1}\setminus E$, implies uniform rectifiability of $E$. More generally, we establish a similar result for the Riesz measure, $p$-harmonic measure, associated to the $p$-Laplace operator, $1<p<\infty$.
In this paper we prove that, given s> 0, if E is a subset of R^m with positive and bounded s-dimensional Hausdorff measure H^s and the principal values of the s-dimensional signed Riesz transform of H^s|E exist H^s-almost everywhere in E, then s is integer. Other more general variants of this result are also proven.
For a set $E$ of positive and finite length, we prove that if the Huovinen transform (the convolution operator with kernel $z^k/|z|^{k+1}$ for an odd number $k$) associated to $E$ exists in principal value, then $E$ is rectifiable.
In this paper we represent the $k$-th Riesz transform in the ultraspherical setting as a principal value integral operator for every $k\in \mathbb{N}$. We also measure the speed of convergence of the limit by proving $L^p$-boundedness properties for the oscillation and variation operators associated with the corresponding truncated operators.
Following a recent paper by X. Tolsa and A. Ruiz de Villa [Non existence of principal values of signed Riesz transforms of non integer dimension, preprint], we show that the finiteness of square function associated with the Riesz transforms with respect to Hausdorff measure $H^s$ implies that $s$ is integer.
In this paper we study higher order Riesz transforms associated with the inverse Gaussian measure given by $π^{n/2}e^{|x|^2}dx$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$. We establish $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,e^{|x|^2}dx)$-boundedness properties and obtain representations as principal values singular integrals for the higher order Riesz transforms. New characterizations of the Banach spaces having the UMD property by means of the Riesz transforms and imaginary powers of the operator involved in the inverse Gaussian setting are given.
Let $A(\cdot)$ be an $(n+1)\times (n+1)$ uniformly elliptic matrix with Hölder continuous real coefficients and let $\mathcal E_A(x,y)$ be the fundamental solution of the PDE $\mathrm{div} A(\cdot) \nabla u =0$ in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$. Let $μ$ be a compactly supported $n$-AD-regular measure in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ and consider the associated operator $$T_μf(x) = \int \nabla_x\mathcal E_A(x,y)\,f(y)\,dμ(y).$$ We show that if $T_μ$ is bounded in $L^2(μ)$, then $μ$ is uniformly $n$-rectifiable. This extends the solution of the codimension $1$ David-Semmes problem for the Riesz transform to the gradient…
Given a finite nonnegative Borel measure $m$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, we identify the Lebesgue set $\mathcal{L}(V_{s}) \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$ of the vector-valued function $$V_{s}(x) = \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\frac{x - y}{|x - y|^{s + 1}} \mathrm{d}m(y), $$ for any order $0 < s < d$. We prove that $a \in \mathcal{L}(V_{s})$ if and only if the integral above has a principal value at $a$ and $$\lim_{r \to 0}{\frac{m(B_{r}(a))}{r^{s}}} = 0.$$ In that case, the precise representative of $V_{s}$ at $a$ coincides with the principal value of the integral. We also study the existence of Lebesgue points for …
In this paper we investigate Lp-boundedness properties for the higher order Riesz transforms associated with Laguerre operators. Also we prove that the k-th Riesz transform is a principal value singular integral operator (modulus a constant times of the function when k is even). To establish our results we exploit a new identity connecting Riesz transforms in the Hermite and Laguerre settings.
In this paper, we characterize the rectifiability (both uniform and not) of an Ahlfors regular set, E, of arbitrary co-dimension by the behavior of a regularized distance function in the complement of that set. In particular, we establish a certain version of the Riesz transform characterization of rectifiability for lower-dimensional sets. We also uncover a special situation in which the regularized distance is itself a solution to a degenerate elliptic operator in the complement of E. This allows us to precisely compute the harmonic measure of those sets associated to this degenerate operato…
Given a domain D in R^d with mild geometric measure theoretic assumptions on its boundary, we show that boundedness of the principal value Riesz tranforms (witn kernel of homogeneity -(d-1)) on Hölder spaces of order alpha on the boundary of D is equivalent to D being a Lyapunov domain of order alpha (i.e., the boundary of D is an hypersurface of class 1+alpha). Another equivalent condition involving Riesz transforms on D is discussed. We also prove that on Lyapunov domains of order alpha the higher order Riesz transforms associated with an odd polynomial are bounded on the Hölder space of ord…
In this paper we study the relationship between two fundamental regularity properties of an $s$-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund operator (CZO) acting on a Borel measure $μ$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, with $s\in (0,d)$. In the classical case when $s=d$ and $μ$ is equal to the Lebesgue measure, Calderón and Zygmund showed that if a CZO is bounded in $L^2$ then the principal value integral exists almost everywhere. However, there are by now several examples showing that this implication may fail for lower-dimensional kernels and measures, even when the CZO has a homogeneous kernel consisting of spherical ha…
