The effect of spin filtering and spin mixing on the dc electric current for voltage biased magnetic quantum point contact with superconducting leads is theoretically studied. The I-V characteristics are calculated for the whole range of spin filtering and spin mixing parameters. It is found that with increasing of spin filtering the subharmonic step structure of the dc electric current, typical for low-transparency junction and junction without considerable spin filtering qualitatively changes. In the lower voltage region and for small enough spin mixing the peak structure arises. When spin mixing increases the peak subgap structure evolves to the step structure. The voltages where subharmonic gap features are located are found to be sensitive to the value of spin filtering. The positions of peaks and steps are calculated analytically and the evolution of the subgap structure from well-known tunnel limit to the large spin filtering case is explained in terms of multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) processes. In particular, it is found that for large spin filtering the subgap feature at $eV_k$ arises from $2k^{\rm th}$ and $(2k\pm 1)^{\rm th}$ order MAR processes, while in the tunnel limit the step at $eV_n$ is known to result from $n^{\rm th}$ order MAR process.
Superconducting quantum point contacts are known to possess two subgap states per each propagating mode. In this note we compute the low-temperature relaxation rate of the upper subgap state into the lower one with the emission of an acoustic phonon. If the reflection in the contact is small, the relaxation time may become much longer than the characteristic lifetime of a bulk quasiparticle.
We report thermally activated transport resonances for biases below the superconducting energy gap in a carbon nanotube (CNT) quantum dot (QD) device with a superconducting Pb and a normal metal contact. These resonances are due to the superconductor's finite quasi-particle population at elevated temperatures and can only be observed when the QD life-time broadening is considerably smaller than the gap. This condition is fulfilled in our QD devices with optimized Pd/Pb/In multi-layer contacts, which result in reproducibly large and "clean" superconducting transport gaps with a strong conductan…
The dynamics of a superconducting quantum point contact biased at subgap voltages is shown to be strongly affected by a microwave electromagnetic field. Interference among a sequence of temporally localized, microwave-induced Landau-Zener transitions between current carrying Andreev levels results in energy absorption and in an increase of the subgap current by several orders of magnitude. The contact is an interferometer in the sense that the current is an oscillatory function of the inverse bias voltage. Possible applications to Andreev-level spectroscopy and microwave detection are discusse…
The behavior of dc subgap current in magnetic quantum point contact is discussed for the case of low-transparency junction with different tunnel probabilities for spin-up ($D_\uparrow$) and spin-down ($D_\downarrow$) electrons. Due to the presence of Andreev bound states $\pm ε_0$ in the system the positions of subgap electric current steps $eV_n = (Δ\pm ε_0)/n$ are split at temperature $T \neq 0$ with respect to the nonmagnetic result $eV_n=2Δ/n$. It is found that under the condition $D_\uparrow \neq D_\downarrow$ the spin current also manifests subgap structure, but only for odd values of $n…
We study an interacting quantum dot in contact with a superconducting island described by the Richardson model with a Coulomb repulsion term controlling the number of electrons on the island. This Hamiltonian admits a compact matrix-product-operator representation and can be efficiently and accurately solved using the density-matrix renormalization group. We systematically explore the effects of the charging energy $E_c$. For $E_c$ comparable to the superconducting gap $Δ$, the subgap states are stabilized by the combination of Kondo exchange coupling and charge redistribution driven by the Co…
We consider tunneling in a hybrid system consisting of a superconductor with two or more probe electrodes which can be either normal metals or polarized ferromagnets. In particular we study transport at subgap voltages and temperatures. Besides Andreev pair tunneling at each contact, in multi-probe structures subgap transport involves additional channels, which are due to coherent propagation of two particles (electrons or holes), each originating from a different probe electrode. The relevant processes are electron cotunneling through the superconductor and conversion of two electrons stemmin…
We study a hybrid device defined in an InAs nanowire with an epitaxial Al shell that consists of a quantum dot in contact with a superconducting island. The device is electrically floating, prohibiting transport measurements, but providing access to states that would otherwise be highly excited and unstable. Radio-frequency reflectometry with lumped-element resonators couples capacitatively to the quantum dot, and detects the presence of discrete subgap states. We perform a detailed study of the case with no island states, but with quantum-dot-induced subgap states controlled by the tunnel cou…
We show that transport through a superconducting quantum point contact biased at subgap voltages is strongly affected by a microwave field. The subgap current is increased by several orders of magnitude. Quantum interference among resonant scattering events involving photon absorption is reflected as an oscillating structure in the I-V curve. We also discuss how the same interference effect can be applied for detecting weak electromagnetic signals up to the gap frequency, and how it is affected by dephasing and relaxation.
We study theoretically the current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of the Josephson field effect transistor - a ballistic SNINS junction with superconducting (S) electrodes confining a planar normal metal region (N), which is controlled by the gate induced potential barrier (I). The calculations were performed using the computation technique developed earlier for long single-channel junctions in the coherent multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) regime. We find significant difference of the subgap current structure in these junctions compared to the subharmonic gap structure in tunnel junctions an…
We present a semiclassical theory of shot noise in diffusive superconductor - normal metal contacts. At subgap voltages, we reproduce the doubling of shot noise with respect to conventional normal-metal contacts, which is interpreted in terms of an energy balance of electrons. Above the gap, the voltage dependence of the noise crosses over to the standard one with a voltage-independent excess noise. The semiclassical description of noise leads to correlations between currents at different electrodes of multiterminal SN contacts which are always of fermionic type, i.e. negative. Using a quantum…
We analyze the current in a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transmission in the presence of a microwave radiation. The interplay between the ac Josephson current and the microwave signal gives rise to Shapiro steps at voltages V = (m/n) \hbar ω_r/2e, where n,m are integer numbers and ω_r is the radiation frequency. The subharmonic steps (n different from 1) are a consequence of the ocurrence of multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) and provide an unambiguous signature of the peculiar ac Josephson effect at high transmission. Moreover, the dc current exhibits a rich subgap structure due…
Atomic quantum point contacts accommodate a small number of conduction channels. Their number N and transmission coefficients {T_n} can be determined by analyzing the subgap structure due to multiple Andreev reflections in the current-voltage (IV) characteristics in the superconducting state. With the help of mechanically controllable break-junctions we have produced Al contacts consisting of a small number of atoms. In the smallest stable contacts, usually three channels contribute to the transport. We show here that the channel ensemble {T_n} of few atom contacts remains unchanged up to temp…
We discuss the nonlinear Andreev current of an interacting quantum dot coupled to spin-polarized and superconducting reservoirs when voltage and temperature biases are applied across the nanostructure. Due to the particle-hole symmetry introduced by the superconducting (S) lead, the subgap spin current vanishes identically. Nevertheless, the Andreev charge current depends on the degree of polarization in the ferromagnetic (F) contact since the shift of electrostatic internal potential of the conductor depends on spin orientation of the charge carrier. This spin-dependent potential shift charac…
Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) in metallic nanostructures, a possible basis for solid-state electron entangler devices, is usually investigated by detecting non-local voltages in multi-terminal superconductor/normal metal devices. This task is difficult because other subgap processes may mask the effects of CAR. One of these processes is the generation of charge imbalance (CI) and the diffusion of non-equilibrium quasi-particles in the superconductor. Here we demonstrate a characteristic dependence of non-local CI on a magnetic field applied parallel to the superconducting wire, which can be…
This work discusses theoretically the interplay between the superconducting and ferromagnetic proximity effects, in a diffusive normal metal strip in contact with a superconductor and a non-uniformly magnetized ferromagnetic insulator. The quasiparticle density of states of the normal metal shows clear qualitative signatures of triplet correlations with spin one (TCS1). When one goes away from the superconduting contact, TCS1 focus at zero energy under the form of a peak surrounded by dips, which show a typical spatial scaling behavior. This behavior can coexist with a focusing of singlet corr…
We show that irradiation of a voltage-biased superconducting quantum point contact at frequencies of the order of the gap energy can remove the suppression of subgap dc transport through Andreev levels. Quantum interference among resonant scattering events involving photon absorption is furthermore shown to make microwave spectroscopy of the Andreev levels feasible. We also discuss how the same interference effect can be applied for detecting weak electromagnetic signals up to the gap frequency, and how it is affected by dephasing and relaxation.
We study the out-of-equilibrium current through a multilevel quantum dot contacted to two superconducting leads and in the presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings, in the regime of strong dot-lead coupling. The multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) subgap peaks in the current voltage characteristics are found to be modified (but not suppressed) by the spin-orbit interaction, in a way that strongly depends on the shape of the dot confining potential. In a perfectly isotropic dot the MAR peaks are enhanced when the strength $α_R$ and $α_D$ of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms are equal. W…
We present a theoretical study of the quasiparticle and subgap conductance of generic $X/I_{sf}/S_{M}$ junction with a spin-filter barrier $I_{sf}$, where $X$ is either a normal $N$ or a ferromagnetic metal $F$ and $S_{M}$ is a superconductor with a built-in exchange field. Our study is based on the tunneling Hamiltonian and the Green's function technique. First, we focus on the quasiparticle transport, both above and below the superconducting critical temperature. We obtain a general expression for the tunneling conductance which are valid for arbitrary values of the exchange field and arbitr…
We derive a microscopic effective action for superconducting contacts with arbitrary transmission distribution of conducting channels. Provided fluctuations of the Josephson phase remain sufficiently small our formalism allows to fully describe fluctuation and interaction effects in such systems. As compared to the well studied tunneling limit our analysis yields a number of qualitatively new features which occur due to the presence of subgap Andreev bound states in the system. We investigate the equilibrium supercurrent noise and evaluate the electron-electron interaction correction to the Jo…
We study spin-dependent electronic transport across ferromagnet/superconductor ballistic junctions modeled using tight-binding Hamiltonians with s, p and d orbitals and material-specific parameters. We show that by accurately modeling the band structure of the bulk materials, one can reproduce the measured differential conductance of Cu/Pb nanocontacts. In contrast the differential conductance of Co/Pb contacts can only be reproduced if an enhanced magnetic moment is present at the interface.
Using a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), we investigate the Local Density of States (LDOS) of artificially fabricated normal metal nano-structures in contact with a superconductor. Very low temperature local spectroscopic measurements (100 mK) reveal the presence of well defined subgap peaks at energy |E|<Delta in the LDOS at various positions of the STM tip. Although no clear correlations between the LDOS and the shape of the samples have emerged, some of the peak features suggest they originate from quasi-particle bound states within the normal metal structures (De Gennes St James states…
With the aid of the Keldysh effective action technique we develop a microscopic theory describing Andreev level spectroscopy experiments in non-tunnel superconducting contacts. We derive an effective impedance of such contacts which accounts for the presence of Andreev levels in the system. At subgap bias voltages and low temperatures inelastic Cooper pair tunneling is accompanied by transitions between these levels resulting in a set of sharp current peaks. We evaluate the intensities of such peaks, establish their dependence on the external magnetic flux piercing the structure and estimate t…
We have measured local and non-local conductance of mesoscopic normal-metal/superconductor hybrid structures fabricated by e-beam lithography and shadow evaporation. The sample geometry consists of a superconducting aluminum bar with two normal-metal wires forming tunnel contacts to the aluminum at distances of the order of the superconducting coherence length. We observe subgap anomalies in both local and non-local conductance that quickly decay with magnetic field and temperature. For the non-local conductance both positive and negative signs are found as a function of bias conditions, indic…
We study low-temperature transport through a Coulomb blockaded quantum dot (QD) contacted by a normal (N), and a superconducting (S) electrode. Within an effective cotunneling model the conduction electron self energy is calculated to leading order in the cotunneling amplitudes and subsequently resummed to obtain the nonequilibrium T-matrix, from which we obtain the nonlinear cotunneling conductance. For even occupied dots the system can be conceived as an effective S/N-cotunnel junction with subgap transport mediated by Andreev reflections. The net spin of an odd occupied dot, however, leads …
We demonstrate several new electron transport phenomena mediated by Andreev bound states (ABSs) that form on three-terminal carbon nanotube (CNT) QDs, with one superconducting (S) contact in the center and two adjacent normal metal (N) contacts. Three-terminal spectroscopy allows us to identify the coupling to the N contacts as the origin of the Andreev resonance (AR) linewidths and to determine the critical coupling strengths to S, for which a ground state transition S-QD systems can occur. We ascribe replicas of the lowest-energy ABS resonance to transitions between the ABS and odd-parity ex…
We investigate the temperature- and coupling-dependent transport through Kondo dot contacts with symmetric superconducting s-wave leads. For finite temperature T we use a superconducting extension of a selfconsistent auxiliary boson scheme, termed SNCA, while at T=0 a perturbative renormalization group treatment is applied. The finite-temperature phase diagram for the 0--pi transition of the Josephson current in the junction is established and related to the phase-dependent position of the subgap Kondo resonance with respect to the Fermi energy. The conductance of the contact is evaluated in t…
Using an approach based on quasiclassical Green's functions we present a theoretical study of transport in mesoscopic S/N structures in the diffusive limit. The subgap conductance in S/N structures with barriers (zero bias and finite bias anomalies) are discused. We also analyse the temperature dependence of the conductance variation $δS(T)$ for a Andreev interferometer. We show that besides the well know low temperature maximum a second maximum near $T_c$ may appear. We present the results of studies on the Josephson effect in 4 terminal S/N/S contacts and on the possible sign reversal of the…

In chapter 2 we present the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function formalism used to obtain the results of this thesis, together with clarifying examples corresponding to simple junctions. In chapter 3, the subgap transport properties of a SIF structure are studied. We devote chapter 4 to the study of thermal transport in superconducting nanohybrid struc…
We study the impact of spin-active scattering on Andreev spectra of point contacts between superconductors(SCs) and strongly spin-polarized ferromagnets(FMs) using recently derived boundary conditions for the Quasiclassical Theory of Superconductivity. We describe the interface region by a microscopic model for the interface scattering matrix. Our model includes both spin-filtering and spin-mixing and is non-perturbative in both transmission and spin polarization. We emphasize the importance of spin-mixing caused by interface scattering, which has been shown to be crucial for the creation of e…
We study the effects of a phase difference on Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states in a spinful Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot contacted by a superconducting loop. In the limit where charging energy is larger than the superconducting gap, we determine the subgap excitation spectrum, the corresponding supercurrent, and the differential conductance as measured by a normal-metal tunnel probe. In absence of a phase difference only one linear combination of the superconductor lead electrons couples to the spin, which gives a single YSR state. With finite phase difference, however, it is effectively a two-c…
We study the $I$-$V$ characteristics of S$_{\text{T}}$/n/N contacts, where S$_{\text{T}}$ is a BCS superconductor S with a built-in exchange field $h$, n represents a normal metal wire, and N---a normal metal reservoir. The superconductor S$_{\text{T}}$ is separated from the n-wire by a spin filter which allows the passage of electrons with a certain spin direction so that only fully polarized triplet Cooper pairs penetrate into the n-wire. We show that both the subgap conductance $σ_{\text{sg}}$ and the excess current $I_{\text{exc}}$, which occur in conventional S/n/N contacts due to Andreev…
Spin transport currents and the spin-transfer torques in voltage-biased superconducting-ferromagnetic nanopillars (SFNFS point contacts) are computed. We develop and implement an algorithm based on the Ricatti formulation of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity to solve the time-dependent boundary conditions for the nonequilibrium Green's functions for spin transport through the ferromagnetic interfaces. A signature of the nonequilibrium torque is a component perpendicular to the plane spanned by the two ferromagnetic moments. The perpendicular component is absent in normal-metal-fer…
