We study the out-of-equilibrium current through a multilevel quantum dot contacted to two superconducting leads and in the presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings, in the regime of strong dot-lead coupling. The multiple Andreev reflection (MAR) subgap peaks in the current voltage characteristics are found to be modified (but not suppressed) by the spin-orbit interaction, in a way that strongly depends on the shape of the dot confining potential. In a perfectly isotropic dot the MAR peaks are enhanced when the strength $α_R$ and $α_D$ of Rashba and Dresselhaus terms are equal. When the anisotropy of the dot confining potential increases the dependence of the subgap structure on the spin-orbit angle $θ=\arctan(α_D/α_R)$ decreases. Furthermore, when an in-plane magnetic field is applied to a strongly anisotropic dot, the peaks of the non-linear conductance oscillate as a function of the magnetic field angle, and the location of the maxima and minima allows for a straightforward read-out of the spin-orbit angle $θ$.
Andreev reflection at the interface between a half-metallic ferromagnet and a spin-singlet superconductor is possible only if it is accompanied by a spin flip. Here we calculate the Andreev reflection amplitudes for the case that the spin flip originates from a spatially non-uniform magnetization direction in the half metal. We calculate both the microscopic Andreev reflection amplitude for a single reflection event and an effective Andreev reflection amplitude describing the effect of multiple Andreev reflections in a ballistic thin film geometry. It is shown that the angle and energy depende…
In the framework of Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we theoretically study the Andreev reflection in normal-superconducting junctions based on semi-Dirac materials. Owing to the intrinsic anisotropy of semi-Dirac materials, the configuration of Andreev reflection and differential conductance are strongly orientation-dependent. For the transport along the linear dispersion direction, the differential conductance exhibits a clear crossover from retro Andreev reflection to specular Andreev reflection with an increasing bias-voltage, and the differential conductance oscillates without a decaying pr…
We theoretically study the crossed Andreev reflection in a hybrid nanostructure which comprises a d-wave superconductor and two normal-metal quantum wires. When the superconductor of the (110) oriented surface is in contact with the wires parallel and placed close to each other, the Andreev bound state is formed by the crossed Andreev reflection. When the contact barrier potential is sufficiently large, two sharp peaks appear in the conductance well below the gap structure, which originate from the bonding and antibonding Andreev bound states. We propose that these Andreev bound states form a …
Andreev reflection spectroscopy of ferromagnet/superconductor (FS) junctions is an important probe of spin polarization. We theoretically investigate spin-polarized transport in FS junctions in the presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus interfacial spin-orbit fields and show that Andreev reflection can be controlled by changing the magnetization orientation. We predict a giant in- and out-of-plane magnetoanisotropy of the junction conductance. If the ferromagnet is highly spin polarized---in the half-metal limit---the magnetoanisotropic Andreev reflection depends universally on the spin-orbit fiel…
We study Andreev reflection in a normal conductor-molecule-superconductor junction using a first principles approach. In particular, we focus on a family of molecules consisting of a molecular backbone and a weakly coupled side group. We show that the presence of the side group can lead to a Fano resonance in the Andreev reflection. We use a simple theoretical model to explain the results of the numerical calculations and to make predictions about the possible sub-gap resonance structures in the Andreev reflection coefficient.
We calculate the full transport counting statistics in a three-terminal tunnel device with one superconducting source and two normal-metal or ferromagnet drains. We obtain the transport probability distribution from direct Andreev reflection, crossed Andreev reflection, and electron transfer which reveals how these processes' statistics are determined by the device conductances. The cross-correlation noise is a result of competing contributions from crossed Andreev reflection and electron transfer, as well as antibunching due to the Pauli exclusion principle. For spin-active tunnel barriers th…
The crossed Andreev reflection in a hybrid nanostructure consisting of a d-wave superconductor and two quantum wires is theoretically studied. When the (110) oriented surface of the superconductor is in contact with the wires parallel and placed close to each other, the Andreev bound state is formed by the crossed Andreev reflection. The conductance has two resonance peaks well below the gap structure in the case of tunnel contacts. These peaks originate from the bonding and antibonding Andreev bound states of hole wave functions.
We investigate the crossed Andreev reflections between two graphene leads connected by a narrow superconductor. When the leads are respectively of the n-and p- type, we find that electron elastic cotunneling and local Andreev reflection are both eliminated even in the absence of any valley-isospin or spin polarizations. We further predict oscillations of both diagonal and cross conductances as a function of the distance between the graphene-superconductor interfaces.
Nonlocal currents, in devices where two normal metal terminals are contacted to a superconductor, are determined using the circuit theory of mesoscopic superconductivity. We calculate the conductance associated with crossed Andreev reflection and electron transfer between the two normal metal terminals, in addition to the conductance from direct Andreev reflection and quasiparticle tunneling. Dephasing and proximity effect are taken into account.
We investigate theoretically charge transport in hybrid multiterminal junctions with superconducting leads kept at different voltages. It is found that multiple Andreev reflections involving several superconducting leads give rise to rich subharmonic gap structures in the current-voltage characteristics. The structures are evidenced numerically in junctions in the incoherent regime.
We study Andreev reflection at an interface between a half metal and a superconductor with spin-orbit interaction. While the absence of minority carriers in the half metal makes singlet Andreev reflection impossible, the spin-orbit interaction gives rise to triplet Andreev reflection, i.e., the reflection of a majority electron into a majority hole or vice versa. As an application of our calculation, we consider a thin half metal film or wire laterally attached to a superconducting contact. If the half metal is disorder free, an excitation gap is opened that is proportional to the spin-orbit i…
The Andreev reflection amplitude at a clean interface between a half-metallic ferromagnet (H) and a superconductor (S) for which the half metal's magnetization has a gradient perpendicular to the interface is proportional to the excitation energy $\varepsilon$ and vanishes at $\varepsilon=0$ [Béri {\em et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ B {\bf 79}, 024517 (2009)]. Here we show that the presence of impurities at or in the immediate vicinity of the HS interface leads to a finite Andreev reflection amplitude at $\varepsilon=0$. This impurity-assisted Andreev reflection dominates the low-bias conductance of a …
We investigate sub-gap transport through a single-level quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting and two normal-conducting leads. Despite the tendency of a large charging energy to suppress the equilibrium proximity effect, a finite Andreev current through the dot can be achieved in non-equilibrium situations. We propose two schemes to identify non-local Andreev transport. In one of them, the presence of strong Coulomb interaction leads to negative values of the non-local conductance as a clear signal of non-local Andreev transport.
Crossed Andreev reflection in multiterminal structures in the diffusive regime is addressed within the quasiclassical Keldysh-Usadel formalism. The elastic cotunneling and crossed Andreev reflection of quasiparticles give nonlocal currents and voltages (depending on the actual biasing of the devices) by virtue of the induced proximity effect in the normal metal electrodes. The magnitude of the nonlocal processes is found to scale with the square of the barrier transparency and to decay exponentially with interface spacing. Nonlocal cotunneling and crossed Andreev conductances are found to cont…
We derive the full distribution of transmitted particles through a superconducting point contact of arbitrary transparency under voltage bias. The charge transport is dominated by multiple Andreev reflections. The counting statistics is a multinomial distribution of processes, in which multiple charges ne (n=1,2,3,...) are transferred through the contact. For zero temperature we obtain analytical expressions for the probabilities of the multiple Andreev reflections. The current, shot noise and high current cumulants in a variety of situations can be obtained from our result.
Hybrid superconductor/graphene (SC/g) junctions are excellent candidates for investigating correlations between Cooper pairs and quantum Hall (QH) edge modes. Experimental studies are challenging as Andreev reflections are extremely sensitive to junction disorder and high magnetic fields are required to form QH edge states. We fabricated low-resistance SC/g interfaces, composed of graphene edge contacted with NbN with a barrier strength of $Z\approx 0.4$, that remain superconducting under magnetic fields larger than $18$ T. We establish the role of graphene's Dirac band structure on zero-field…
The Andreev reflection of narrow ferromagnet/superconductor point contacts is theoretically studied. We show that the conductance quantization depends on whether the contact region is superconducting or ferromagnetic as well as on the strength of the exchange field in the ferromagnet. The Andreev reflection of the ferromagnetic contact is more suppressed than that of the superconducting contact. We also show that the conductance-voltage curve has a bump at zero bias-voltage if there is no interfacial-scattering. On the contrary, the conductance-voltage curve shows a dip if the system has an in…
We examine the voltage V and magnetic field B dependent Andreev conductance of a chaotic quantum dot coupled via point contacts to a normal metal and a superconductor. In the case where the contact to the superconductor dominates, we find that the conductance is consistent with the dot itself behaving as a superconductor-- it appears as though Andreev reflections are occurring locally at the interface between the normal lead and the dot. This is contrasted against the behaviour of an integrable dot, where for a similar strong coupling to the superconductor, no such effect is seen. The voltage …
A theory of crossed Andreev reflection in structures consisting of a superconductor with two ferromagnetic leads is presented. The electric current due to the crossed Andreev reflection strongly depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization of two ferromagnetic leads. It is shown that the dependence of the electric current and the magnetoresistance on the distance between two ferromagnetic leads is understood by considering the interference between the wave functions in ferromagnets. The current and the magnetoresistance are calculated as functions of the exchange field and the heig…
We study resonant Andreev tunneling through a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to a normal and to a superconducting lead. We obtain a formula for the Andreev current and apply it to discuss the linear and non-linear transport in the nonperturbative regime, where the effects of the Kondo resonance on the two particle tunneling arise. In particular we notice an enhancement of the Kondo anomaly in the $I-V$ characteristics due to the superconducting electrode.
Using the tight binding model and the non-equilibrium Green function method, we study Andreev reflection in graphene-superconductor junction, where graphene has two nonequal Dirac Cones split in energy and therefore time reversal symmetry is broken. Due to the anti-chiral edge states of the current graphene model, an incident electron travelling along the edges makes distinct contribution to Andreev reflections. In a two-terminal device, because Andreev retro-reflection is not allowed for just the anti-chiral edges, in this case the mutual scattering between edge and bulk states is necessary, …
Andreev reflection is investigated in layered anisotropic normal metal / superconductor (N/S) systems in the case of an energy gap Δin S not negligible with respect to the Fermi energy E_F, as it probably occurs with high critical temperature superconductors (HTS). We find that in these limits retro-reflectivity, which is a fundamental feature of Andreev reflection, is broken modifying sensitively transport across S/N interfaces. We discuss the consequences for supercurrents in HTS Josephson junctions and for the midgap states in S-N contacts
We study Multiple Andreev Reflections in long diffusive superconductor(S)-normal metal(N)-superconductor junctions with low-transparency interfaces. Assuming strong thermalization in the weak link we calculate the current-voltage dependence $I(V)$. At intermediate temperatures, $E_\mathrm{Th}\ll T\llΔ$, the current is dominated by noncoherent multiple Andreev reflections and is obtained analytically. The results are generalized to a ferromagnetic junction. We find that the exchange field produces a non-trivial splitting of the subharmonic gap structure. This effect relies on thermalization and…
We formulate a minimal model of point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of a normal- metal/multiband superconductor interface. The theory generalizes the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation to a multiband superconductor and it is based on the quantum waveguides theory. The proposed approach allows an analytic evaluation of the Andreev and normal reflection coefficients and thus is suitable for a data fitting of point contact experiments. The obtained differential conductance curves present distinctive features similar to the ones measured in the experiments on multiband systems, l…
We investigate Andreev reflection at the interface between a superconductor and a two--dimensional electron system (2DES) in an external magnetic field such that cyclotron motion is important in the latter. A finite Zeeman splitting in the 2DES and the presence of diamagnetic screening currents in the superconductor are incorporated into a microscopic theory of Andreev edge states, which is based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes formalism. The Andreev--reflection contribution to the interface conductance is calculated. The effect of Zeeman splitting is most visible as a double--step feature in the…
In this paper, we investigate the transport through a T-shaped double quantum dot coupled to two normal metal leads left and right and a superconducting lead. Analytical expressions of Andreev transmission and local Density of States of the system at zero temperature have been obtained. We study the role of the superconducting lead in the quantum interferometric features of the double quantum dot. We report for first time the Fano effect produced by Andreev bound states in a side quantum dot. Our results show that as a consequence of quantum interference and proximity effect, the transmission …
We study the Josephson effect in a clean Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor junction for arbitrarily large spin polarizations. The Andreev reflection at a clean Ferromagnet-Superconductor interface is incomplete, and Andreev channels with a large incidence angle are progressively suppressed with increasing exchange energy. As a result, the critical current exhibits oscillations as a function of the exchange energy and of the length of the ferromagnet and has a temperature dependence which deviates from the one predicted by the quasiclassical theory.
The energy-dependent Andreev reflection eigenvalues determine the transport properties of normal-superconducting systems. We evaluate the eigenvalue density to get an insight into formation of resonant electron-hole transport channels. The circuit-theory-like method developed can be applied to any generic mesoscopic conductor or combinations thereof. We present the results for experimentally relevant cases of a diffusive wire and a double tunnel junction.
We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$. After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above $T_c$---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for th…
We show that Andreev reflection in a junction between ferromagnetic (F) and superconducting (S) graphene regions is fundamentally different from the common FS junctions. For a weakly doped F graphene with an exchange field $h$ larger than its Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}$, Andreev reflection of massless Dirac fermions is associated with a Klein tunneling through an exchange field p-n barrier between two spin-split conduction and valence subbands. We find that this Andreev-Klein process results in an enhancement of the subgap conductance of a graphene FS junction by $h$ up to the point at which the …
We analyze the charge transport between a one-dimensional weakly interacting electron gas and a superconductor within the scaling approach in the basis of scattering states. We derive the renormalization group equations, which fully account for the intrinsic energy dependence due to Andreev reflection. A strong renormalization of the corresponding reflection phase is predicted even for a perfectly transparent metal-superconductor interface. The interaction-induced suppression of the Andreev conductance is shown to be highly sensitive to the normal state resistance, providing a possible explana…
We investigate a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based on carbon nanotubes in a fork geometry [J.-P. Cleuziou {\it et al.}, Nature Nanotechnology {\bf 1}, 53 (2006)], involving tunneling of evanescent quasiparticles through a superconductor over a distance comparable to the superconducting coherence length, with therefore ``non local'' processes generalizing non local Andreev reflection and elastic cotunneling. Non local processes induce a reduction of the critical current and modify the current-phase relation. We discuss arbitrary interface transparencies. Such devices in …
The Adriatico Research Conference on Superconductivity, Andreev Reflection, and Proximity Effect in Mesoscopic Structures took place at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, July 8-11, 1997. The organizers were Elias Burstein, Leonid Glazman, Teun Klapwijk, and Subodh R. Shenoy. We describe some of the central issues discussed at the conference, along with more personal reflections prompted by new developments.
Ballistic point contact (BPC) with zigzag edges in graphene is a main candidate of a valley filter, in which the polarization of the valley degree of freedom can be selected by using a local gate voltage. Here, we propose to detect the valley filtering effect by Andreev reflection. Because electrons in the lowest conduction band and the highest valence band of the BPC possess opposite chirality, the inter-band Andreev reflection is strongly suppressed, after multiple scattering and interference. We draw this conclusion by both the scattering matrix analysis and the numerical simulation. The An…
We investigate Andreev reflection in two-dimensional heterojunctions formed by a superconductor in contact with a topological insulator ribbon either possessing or breaking time-reversal symmetry. Both classes of topological insulators exhibit perfect Andreev reflection, which is robust against disorder. This is assigned to topologically protected edge states. In the time-reversal symmetric case we show that doping one of the ribbon edges with magnetic impurities suppresses one Andreev channel, while no such suppression is seen in the broken symmetry situation. Based on this observation we sug…
Andreev-reflection dominated transport is demonstrated in Al/n-In0.38Ga0.62As superconductor-semiconductor junctions grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs(001). High junction transparency was achieved in low-doped devices by exploiting Si interface bilayers to suppress the native Schottky barrier. It is argued that this technique is ideally suited for the fabrication of ballistic transport hybrid microstructures.
A normal metal source reservoir can load two electrons onto a double quantum dot in the spin-triplet configuration. We show that if the drain lead of the dot is a spin-singlet superconductor, these electrons cannot form a Cooper pair and are blockaded on the double dot. We call this phenomenon Andreev blockade because it arises due to suppressed Andreev reflections. We identify transport characteristics unique to Andreev blockade. Most significantly, it occurs for any occupation of the dot adjacent to the superconductor, in contrast with the well-studied Pauli blockade which requires odd occup…
The Andreev spectrum of a quantum dot embedded in a hybrid semiconductor-superconductor interferometer can be modulated by electrostatic gating, magnetic flux through the interferometer, and Zeeman splitting from in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate parity transitions in the embedded quantum dot system, and show that the Zeeman-driven transition is accompanied by a 0-π transition in the superconducting phase across the dot. We further demonstrate that flux through the interferometer modulates both dot parity and 0-π transitions.
The charge of the subgap states in an Andreev quantum dot (AQD; this is a quantum dot inserted into a superconducting loop) is very sensitive to the magnetic flux threading the loop. We study the sensitivity of this device as a function of its parameters for the limit of a large superconducting gap. In our analysis, we account for the effects of a weak Coulomb interaction within the dot. We discuss the suitability of this setup as a device detecting weak magnetic fields.
We present an experimental study of inverted InAs/GaSb composite quantum wells in the hybridization regime and contacted by superconducting electrodes. A front gate is used to vary the Fermi level into the mini-gap, where recent experiments indicate existence of helical edge modes [arXiv:1105.0137]. Zero bias dips in differential resistance are observed across the mini-gap, suggesting transport dominated by Andreev reflection processes. Evolution of the mini-gap differential resistance with applied bias as well as measured mini-gap excess current of 150 nA are in good agreement with the predic…
Crossed Andreev reflection in a lateral spin valve geometry device is an aspect of considerable recent interest, particularly with regards to Cooper pair splitting experiments to realize solid state quantum entanglement. In this work, devices are fabricated consisting of two ferromagnetic permalloy (Py) electrodes contacted by a overlaid perpendicular superconducting Ta electrode, of variable lateral in-plane offset within the expected BCS superconducting coherence length $ξ_0$. Experimental electrical transport measurements are presented of local and nonlocal conduction, showing characteristi…
We have studied the interplay of Andreev reflection and cyclotron motion of quasiparticles at a superconductor-normal-metal interface with a strong magnetic field applied parallel to the interface. Bound states are formed due to the confinement introduced both by the external magnetic field and the superconducting gap. These bound states are a coherent superposition of electron and hole edge excitations similar to those realized in finite quantum-Hall samples. We find the energy spectrum for these Andreev edge states and calculate transport properties.
We investigate local and nonlocal signatures of hybridization between a quantum dot state and an extended Andreev bound state (ABS) in a gate-defined InAs nanowire with multiple side probes. When a quantum dot in one of the side probes was hybridized with an ABS in the nanowire, a characteristic spectroscopic pattern was observed both locally, i.e., in the probe with the quantum dot, and nonlocally, in the tunnel conductance of a remote probe. Nonlocal signatures of hybridization reveal the extended nature of the ABS.
We study Andreev reflection in normal metal-superconductor junctions by using an extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model combined with transport calculations based on density functional theory. Starting from a parameter-free description of the underlying electronic structure, we perform a detailed investigation of normal metal-superconductor junctions, as the separation between the superconductor and the normal metal is varied. The results are interpreted by means of transverse momentum resolved calculations, which allow us to examine the contributions arising from different regions of the Bri…
We present a theory of Andreev reflection in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet double junction system. The spin polarized quasiparticles penetrate to the superconductor in the range of penetration depth from the interface by the Andreev reflection. When the thickness of the superconductor is comparable to or smaller than the penetration depth, the spin polarized quasiparticles pass through the superconductor and therefore the electric current depends on the relative orientation of magnetizations of the ferromagnets. The dependences of the magnetoresistance on the thickness of the superc…
Point-contact Andreev reflection measurements of Co/ and Cu/tungsten-carbide (WC$_x$) contacts are presented. Metallic thin films were patterned by e-beam-lithography and lift-off; tungsten carbide superconducting tips were grown directly on the pre-patterned samples by decomposition of a metallo-organic vapour (tungsten hexacarbonyl) under a focused Ga$^+$-ion beam (FIB). Current-voltage measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field clearly showed the signatures of Andreev reflection. The experimental conductance-voltage curves were analyzed within the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk …
We present a numerical study of the emergence of Majorana and Andreev bound states in a system composed by two quantum dots, in which one of then is coupled to a conventional superconductor, SC1, and the other connects to a topological superconductor, SC2. By controlling the interdot coupling we can drive the system from a two single (uncoupled) quantum dots to a double (coupled) dot system configurations. We employ a recursive Green's function technique that provides us with numerically exact results for the local density of states of the system. We first show that in the uncoupled dot config…
An overview is presented of experiments on ballistic electrical transport in inhomogeneous superconducting systems which are controlled by the process of Andreev reflection. The initial experiments based on the coexistence of a normal phase and a superconducting phase in the intermediate state led to the concept itself. It was followed by a focus on geometrically inhomogeneous systems like point contacts, which provided a very clear manifestation of the energy- and directional dependence of the Andreev reflection process. The point contacts have in recent years evolved towards the atomic scale…
We theoretically demonstrate that a ferromagnetic/superconductor junction on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) has an anisotropic angle-dependent Andreev reflection when the in-plane magnetization has a component perpendicular to the junction. In the presence of in-plane magnetization, the Dirac cone's location adjusts in the $k$-space, whereas its out-of-plane component induces a gap. This movement leads to the anisotropic angle-dependent Andreev reflection and creates transverse conductance flows parallel to the interface. Also, an indirect gap induces in the j…
We report on electronic transport properties of mesoscopic superconductor-ferromagnet spin-valve structures. Two ferromagnetic iron leads form planar tunnel contacts to a superconducting aluminum wire, where the distance of the two contacts is of the order of the coherence length of the aluminum. We observe a negative non-local resistance which can be explained by crossed Andreev reflection, a process where an electron incident from one of the leads gets reflected as a hole into the other, thereby creating a pair of spatially separated, entangled particles.
We investigate transport through hybrid structures consisting of two normal metal leads connected via tunnel barriers to one common superconducting electrode. We find clear evidence for the occurrence of non-local Andreev reflection and elastic cotunneling through superconductor when the separation of the tunnel barrier is comparable to the superconducting coherence length. The probability of the two processes is energy dependent, with elastic cotunneling dominating at low energy and non-local Andreev reflection at higher energies. The energy scale of the crossover is found to be the Thouless …
We propose a scheme to detect the Majorana-zero-mode-induced crossed Andreev reflection by measuring tunneling current directly. In this scheme a metallic ring structure is utilized to separate electron and hole signals. Since tunneling electrons and holes have different propagating wave vectors, the conditions for them to be constructively coherent in the ring differ. We find that when the magnetic flux threading the ring varies, it is possible to observe adjacent positive and negative current peaks of almost equal amplitudes.
A solid-state cooling principle based on magnetic-field-driven tunable suppression of Andreev reflection in superconductor/two-dimensional electron gas nanostructures is proposed. This cooling mechanism can lead to very large heat fluxes per channel up to 10^4 times greater than currently achieved with superconducting tunnel junctions. This efficacy and its availability in a two-dimensional electron system make this method of particular relevance for the implementation of quantum nanostructures operating at cryogenic temperatures.
