We calculate quarkonium spectral functions in a quark-gluon plasma using a potential model based on full QCD lattice calculations of the free energy of static quark-antiquark pair. We estimate the binding energy and the thermal width of different quarkonium states. The estimated upper limit for the dissociation temperatures is considerably lower than the ones suggested in the recent literature.
The quarkonium states in a quark-gluon plasma is examined with the potential implied by AdS/CFT duality. Both the vanila AdS-Schwarzschild metric and the one with an infrared cutoff are considered. The calculated dissociation temperatures for $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ are found to agree with the lattice results within a factor of two.
We calculate the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D (m being the heavy-quark mass), at order m alpha_s^5. We first sequentially integrate out the scales m, m alpha_s and T, and, next, we carry out the calculations in the resulting effective theory using techniques of integration by regions. A collinear region is identified, which contributes at this order. We also discuss the implications of our results concerning heavy quarkonium suppression in heavy ion …
Possible effects of the color screened confinement potential are investigated. Color screened linear potential with a large string tension $T=(0.26-0.32)GeV^2$ is suggested by a study of the $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ spectra. The $ψ(4160)$ and $ψ(4415)$ are respectively assigned as the $ψ(4S)$-dominated and the $ψ(5S)$ $c\bar c$ states. Satisfactory results for the masses and leptonic widths (with QCD radiative corrections) of $c\bar c$ and $b\bar b$ states are obtained.
The relativistic correction of the AdS/CFT implied heavy quark potential is examined within the framework of the potential model. For the typical range of the coupling strength appropriate to heavy-ion collisions, we find the correction is significant in size and lowers the dissociation temperature of quarkonia.
In the limit of a high temperature T and a large quark-mass M, implying a small gauge coupling g, the heavy quark contribution to the spectral function of the electromagnetic current can be computed systematically in the weak-coupling expansion. We argue that the scale hierarchy relevant for addressing the disappearance ("melting") of the resonance peak from the spectral function reads M >> T > g^2 M > gT >> g^4 M, and review how the heavy scales can be integrated out one-by-one, to construct a set of effective field theories describing the low-energy dynamics. The parametric behaviour of the …
We study the masses and the leptonic decay widths of heavy quarkonium in the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory of QCD, in which the abelian monopole condensation plays an essential role for color confinement. The effect of color screening due to the light quark pair creation is introduced by the infrared momentum cutoff in the gluon propagator. We find that the color screening effect is important to reproduce the properties of the heavy quarkonium, in particular the leptonic decay width. We also discuss the underlying systematics of the heavy quark spectroscopy in the DGL theory.
In the early stages of heavy-ion collisions, the hot QCD matter expands more longitudinally than transversely. This imbalance causes the system to become rapidly colder in the longitudinal direction and a local momentum anisotropy appears. In this paper, we study the heavy-quarkonium spectrum in the presence of a small plasma anisotropy. We work in the framework of pNRQCD at finite temperature. We inspect arrangements of non-relativistic and thermal scales complementary to those considered in the literature. In particular, we consider temperatures larger and Debye masses smaller than the bindi…
We discuss the behavior of charmonia and bottomonia correlators and spectral functions above the deconfinement temperature and determine melting temperatures for different mesonic states.
We reconsider a plasma with an anisotropy imposed on the momentum distribution of the system and study the real time static potential for quarkonia. The distribution function is normalised so as to preserve the particle number in an ideal gas, as required in the Keldysh-Schwinger formalism. In contrast to recent findings without this normalisation, a weak anisotropy does not lead to an increase in the melting temperature for bound states. To test for the maximal effect, we also investigate a gluonic medium in the limit of an asymptotically strong anisotropy. The spectral function of quarkonium…
Heavy quarkonium suppression was proposed long ago as a signal of the formation of a deconfined phase in heavy ion collisions. Originally the mechanism responsible for this suppression was thought to be color screening. However perturbative computations and recent lattice studies suggest the existence of an imaginary part of the potential which could have a more important role for suppression than screening. In this work we review some general aspects of effective field theories for heavy quarkonium in the medium and discuss the physical phenomena behind the imaginary part of the potential and…
Previous research has shown that the peak of the quarkonium entropy at the deconfinement transition would be related to the entropic force which induces the melting of quarkonium. In this article, we study the effect of backreaction on the entropic force in a strongly coupled plasma of adjoint matter. The backreaction covered here comes from the presence of static heavy quarks evenly distributed over such a plasma. It is found that the inclusion of backreaction increases the entropic force thus enhancing the quarkonium dissociation, in accord with the findings of the imaginary potential.
We study quarkonium spectral functions at high temperatures using potential model with complex potential. The real part of the potential is constrained by the lattice QCD data on static quark anti-quark correlation functions, while the imaginary part of the potential is taken from perturbative calculations. We find that the imaginary part of the potential has significant effect on quarkonium spectral functions, in particular, it leas to the dissolution of the 1S charmonium and excited bottomonium states at temperatures about 250 MeV and melting of the ground state bottomonium at temperatures s…
The possibility of describing the behavior of a $Q\overline{Q}$ pair in a hot plasma in terms of an effective potential is investigated. It is shown that as long as medium effects can be embodied in a gaussian action, like in the QED case, the $Q\overline{Q}$ propagator obeys a closed temporal evolution equation whose large-time behavior is governed by an effective potential. The latter, beside screening, displays also an imaginary part related to collisions.
We study the bottomonium screening masses in a 2+1 flavor QCD medium on the lattice using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark(HISQ) discretization for the quarks. We focus on a wide temperature range in the region $350~{\rm MeV}\le T < 1000 ~{\rm MeV}$, and perform our calculations on three different lattice spacings to control the lattice cut-off effects, corresponding to temporal lattice extent of $N_τ=8,10,12$. From a detailed study of the temperature dependence of screening masses we conclude that while the $η_b(1S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ states melt at $T>500$ MeV, the scalar and axial-vector state…
We compute the screening length for quarkonium mesons moving through an anisotropic, strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma by means of its gravity dual. We present the results for arbitrary velocities and orientations of the mesons, as well as for arbitrary values of the anisotropy. The anisotropic screening length can be larger or smaller than the isotropic one, and this depends on whether the comparison is made at equal temperatures or at equal entropy densities. For generic motion we find that: (i) mesons dissociate above a certain critical value of the anisotropy, even at zero tempe…
Due to the rapid longitudinal expansion of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions, large local-rest-frame momentum-space anisotropies are generated during the system's evolution. These momentum-space anisotropies complicate the modeling of heavy-quarkonium dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma due to the fact that the resulting inter-quark potentials are spatially anisotropic, requiring real-time solution of the 3D Schrödinger equation. Herein, we introduce a method for reducing anisotropic heavy-quark potentials to isotropic ones by introducing an effective screening mass that de…
Color screening and regeneration are both hot medium effects on quarkonium production in high energy nuclear collisions. However, they affect in an opposite way the finally observed quarkonium spectra. Due to the competition of the two dynamical effects, the ratio of the integrated quarkonium yield between nuclear and elementary nucleon collisions loses its sensitivity. Once the information of quarkonium transverse motion is included, on the other hand, the ratio of averaged transverse momentum square reveals the nature of the QCD medium created in high energy nuclear collisions.
The measurements of heavy quarkonium suppression at RHIC and LHC urge theory to develop intuitive as well as quantitative methods for the description of $Q\bar{Q}$ melting in the quark-gluon plasma. Here I will present a brief sketch on the effective field theory strategies underlying the definition of the heavy quark static potential and report on two recent advances in the extraction and interpretation of such a potential. On the one side, progress has been made in obtaining its values from lattice QCD, which promises to make possible investigating its real and imaginary part non-perturbativ…
We discuss recent progress in the study of in-medium heavy quarkonium using first-principles lattice QCD calculations and effective field theory. In particular our focus lies on real-time information carried by QCD spectral functions and we report on a novel strategy for their extraction from Euclidean-time simulations. Combining an effective description for heavy quarks with finite temperature lattice QCD we compute in-medium spectra providing insight in heavy quarkonium melting in a static thermal medium. On the other hand we use spectral information to extract the complex in-medium potentia…
The Schroedinger equation for the charmonium and bottomonium states at finite temperature is solved by employing an effective temperature dependent potential given by a linear combination of the color singlet free and internal energies obtained on the lattice from the Polyakov loop correlation functions. The melting temperatures and other properties of the quarkonium states are evaluated. The consistency of the potential model approach with the available lattice data on the quarkonium temporal correlators and spectral functions is explored.
We study the states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ system in a non-relativistic a spin dependent potential model at finite temperature. The potential incorporate color screening effect through a parameter $μ$. The parameter $μ$ along with strong coupling constant $α_s$ and string tension $σ$ are taken temperature dependent and their values are fitted to the Lattice data of quark anti-quark potential available at different values of temperature. The applied potential include spin-spin, spin-orbital, tensor interactions which allow us to study spin singlet and triplet states of quarkonia. By solvi…
We generalize known results for heavy quarkonium in a thermal bath to the case of a finite baryonic density, and provide a number of formulas for the energy shift and decay width that hold at weak coupling for sufficiently large temperature and/or chemical potential. We find that a non-vanishing decay width requires a temperature larger than the typical binding energy, no matter how large the chemical potential is. This implies that at zero temperature the dissociation mechanism of heavy quarkonium is due entirely to screening, unlike in the finite temperature case. We use several effective th…
We have studied the dissociation of heavy quarkonium states in a hot QCD medium by investigating the medium modifications to a heavy quark potential. Our model shows that in-medium modification causes the screening of the charge in contrast to the screening of the range of the potential. We have then employed the medium-modified potential to estimate the dissociation pattern of the charmonium and bottomonium states and also explore how the pattern changes as we go from the perturbative to nonperturbative domain in the Debye mass. The results are in good agreement with the other current theoret…
In this paper, we critically examine hierarchies between energy scales that determine quarkonium dynamics in the quark gluon plasma. A particularly important role is played by the ratio of the binding energy of species ($E_b$) and the medium scales; temperature ($T$) and Debye mass ($m_D$). It is well known that if these ratios are much larger than one then the dominant process governing quarkonium evolution is dissociation by thermal gluons (gluo-dissociation). On the other hand, if this ratio is much smaller than one then quarkonium dynamics is dominated by screening and Landau damping of th…
In this work we calculate the lifetime of quarkonium moving with velocity $v$ through a quark gluon plasma at temperature $T$. We also investigate the stability of heavy mesons with respect to the effects of color charge screening. An explicit, configuration-space potential is found for the screened interaction between the quarks constituting the meson. We solve the Schrödinger equation for the relative motion of the quarks in this non-spherical potential. In this way, we determine the range of $v,T$ values for which the meson is bound. When a bound state exists, we use the bound-state wavefun…
We report about a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium mass and decay width in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> pi T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D, m being the heavy-quark mass, up to order m alpha_s^5. The calculation may be relevant to understand the behavior of the Y(1S) in a quark-gluon plasma at present-day colliders.
The non-equilibrium properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) have been a topic of intensive research. In this contribution, we explore the nature of heavy quarkonia immersed in a QGP with bulk viscosity. We incorporate the bulk viscous effect through the deformation of the distribution functions of thermal quarks and gluons, with which the color dielectric permittivity can be computed. We use the color dielectric permittivity to compute the heavy quark potential inside a bulk viscous plasma and solve the Schrödinger equation using the potential to obtain the physical properties such as binding e…
We use gauge/string duality to model a heavy quark-antiquark pair in a color singlet moving through a thermal plasma. In particular, we explore the effect of velocity on the string tension and Debye screening mass. Then we apply the results to the analysis of heavy quarkonium bound states. With some assumptions, we estimate the characteristic size of quarkonium and its dissociation temperature.
We present the final results from a multi-year study of the in-medium spectral properties of heavy quarkonium bound states on the lattice. In this work we combine high statistics $N_f=2+1$ ensembles from the HotQCD collaboration with the effective theory NRQCD and improved Bayesian spectral reconstruction methods. We corroborate with high precision the hierarchical in-medium modification of quarkonium states with respect to their vacuum binding energy and provide updated values on melting temperatures. In particular we are able to understand previous disagreements between different Bayesian me…
We investigate the Mott effect for heavy quarkonia due to Debye screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks and antiquarks. The influence of residual color correlation is investigated by coupling the light quark sector to a temporal gauge field driven by the Polyakov loop potential. This leads to an increase of the Mott dissociation temperatures for quarkonia states which stabilizes in particular the excited states, but has marginal effect on the ground states.

We revisit holographic mesons in the D4/D6 model to study holographic light vector mesons and the properties of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. To treat the light mesons and heavy quarkonium on the same footing, we use the same compactification scale MKK in both systems. We observe that like scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons the vector meson mass is linearly proportional to the square root of the quark mass, when the quark mass is large. With a MKK fixed by light meson masses, we calculate the mass of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. We also obtain the …
A Q-Qbar bound state represents a balance between repulsive kinetic and attractive potential energy. In a hot quark-gluon plasma, the interaction potential experiences medium effects. Color screening modifies the attractive binding force between the quarks, while the increase of entropy with Q-Qbar separation gives rise to a growing repulsion. We study the role of these phenomena for in-medium Q-Qbar binding and dissociation. It is found that the relevant potential for Q-Qbar binding is the free energy F; with increasing Q-Qbar separation, further binding through the internal energy U is compe…
We evaluate the suppression of $J/ψ$ production in an equilibrating quark gluon plasma for two competing mechanisms: Debye screening of colour interaction and dissociation due to energetic gluons. Results are obtained for $S+S$ and $Au+Au$ collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. At RHIC energies the gluonic dissociation of the charmonium is found to be equally important for both the systems while the screening of the interaction plays a significant role only for the larger systems. At LHC energies the Debye mechanism is found to dominate for both the systems. While considering the suppression of …
An overview is given of the theoretical developments on heavy quarks and quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions as reported at the "Hard and EM Probes 2018" conference. Specifically, we address progress in the understanding of heavy-flavor diffusion and its hadronization, quarkonium transport and the extraction of quarkonium melting temperatures, energy loss of heavy quarks at high momentum, and their rescattering in small colliding systems.
The temperature dependence of binding energies suggests that the dissciation of the charmonium (bottomonium)…
Rapid thermalization in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions leads to fast changing potential between a heavy quark and antiquark from zero temperature potential to the finite temperature one. Time dependent perturbation theory can then be used to calculate the survival probability of the initial quarkonium state. In view of very short time scales of thermalization at RHIC and LHC energies, we calculate the survival probability of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ using sudden approximation. Our results show that quarkonium decay may be significant even when temperature of QGP remains low enough so that the co…
We analyze the static potential of a quark-antiquark pair at $T\,\geq\,T_c$, where $T_c$ is a temperature of a deconfinement phase transition in QCD. We discuss the possibility that the non-perturbative part of this potential can be studied through the modification of the correlation functions, which define the quadratic field correlators of the nonperturbative vaccuum fields. We use the non-perturbative quark-antiquark potential derived in this way and the screened one-gluon-exchange potential with $T$-dependent Debye screening mass to calculate $J/ψ$, $Υ$ and $Ω_{bbb}$ binding energies and m…
We present the final results of our high statistics study on the properties of bottomonium and charmonium at finite temperature. We focus on the temperature range around the crossover transition $150\leq T\leq 410$MeV, relevant for current heavy ion collision experiments. The QCD medium degrees of freedom which consist of dynamical u,d, and s quarks and gluons are captured by realistic state-of-the art ($m_π\approx 161$MeV) lattice QCD simulations of the HotQCD collaboration. For the heavy quarks we deploy the non-relativistic effective field theory of QCD, NRQCD. The in-medium properties of q…
We introduce a method for reducing anisotropic heavy-quark potentials to isotropic potentials by using an effective screening mass that depends on the quantum numbers $l$ and $m$ of a given state. We demonstrate that, using the resulting 1D effective potential model, one can solve a 1D Schrödinger equation and reproduce the full 3D results for the energies and binding energies of low-lying heavy-quarkonium bound states to relatively high accuracy. This includes the splitting of different p-wave polarizations. The resulting 1D effective model provides a way to include momentum anisotropy effect…
We consider a black hole solution with a non-trivial dilaton from IIB super gravity which is expected to describe a strongly coupled hot gauge plasma with non-vanishing gluon condensation present. We construct a rotating and moving baryon to probe the screening and phases of the plasma. Melting of the baryons in hot plasma in this background had been studied previously, however, we show that baryons melt much lower temperature than has been suggested previously.
Based on the Dyson-Schwinger equation, we compute the resummed gluon propagator in a holonomous plasma that is described by introducing a constant background field for the vector potential $A_{0}$. Due to the transversality of the holonomous Hard-Thermal-Loop in gluon self-energy, the resummed propagator has a similar Lorentz structure as that in the perturbative Quark-Gluon Plasma where the holonomy vanishes. As for the color structures, since diagonal gluons are mixed in the over-complete double line basis, only the propagators for off-diagonal gluons can be obtained unambiguously. On the ot…
The production of heavy quarkonium in heavy ion collisions has been used as an important probe of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Due to the plasma screening effect, the color attraction between the heavy quark antiquark pair inside a quarkonium is significantly suppressed at high temperature and thus no bound states can exist, i.e., they "melt". In addition, a bound heavy quark antiquark pair can dissociate if enough energy is transferred to it in a dynamical process inside the plasma. So one would expect the production of quarkonium to be considerably suppressed in heavy ion collisions. Howeve…
Dissociation of quarkonium in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a long standing topic in relativistic heavy-ion collisions because it has been believed to signal one of the fundamental natures of the QGP -- Debye screening due to the liberation of color degrees of freedom. Among recent new theoretical developments is the application of open quantum system framework to quarkonium in the QGP. Open system approach enables us to describe how dynamical as well as static properties of QGP influences the time evolution of quarkonium in a coherent way. Currently, there are several master equations for quark…
We build a "bottom-up" holographic model of charmonium by matching the essential spectral data. We argue that this data must include not only the masses but also the decay constants of the J/psi and psi' mesons. Relative to the "soft-wall" models for light mesons, such a matching requires two new features in the holographic potential: an overall upward shift as well as a narrow "dip" near the holographic boundary. We calculate the spectral function as well as the position of the complex singularities (quasinormal frequencies) of the retarded correlator of the charm current at finite temperatur…
We perform a complete next-to-leading order calculation of the non-Abelian electric field correlator in a SU($N_c$) plasma, which encodes properties of the plasma relevant for heavy particle bound state formation and dissociation, and is different from the correlator for the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The calculation is carried out in the real-time formalism of thermal field theory and includes both vacuum and finite temperature contributions. By working in the $R_ξ$ gauge, we explicitly show the results are gauge independent, infrared and collinear safe. The renormalization group equa…
Quarkonium production in high-energy hadronic collisions provides a fundamental test of QCD. Its modification in a nuclear medium is a sensitive probe of the space-time temperature profile and transport properties of the QGP, yielding constraints complementary to the ones obtained from the quenching of light hadrons and jets, and open heavy flavor. In these proceedings, we report new results for the suppression of high transverse momentum charmonium [$J/ψ,\, ψ(2S)$] and bottomonium [$Υ(1S),\, Υ(2S),\, Υ(3S)$] states in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Our theoretical formalism co…
We analyze heavy quark free energies in 2-flavor QCD at finite temperature and the corresponding heavy quark potential at zero temperature. Static quark anti-quark sources in color singlet, octet and color averaged channels are used to probe thermal modifications of the medium. The temperature dependence of the running coupling, $α_{qq}(r,T)$, is analyzed at short and large distances and is compared to zero temperature as well as quenched calculations. In parts we also compare our results to recent findings in 3-flavor QCD. We find that the characteristic length scale below which the running c…
Using the chromo-electric dipole coupling Hamiltonian from QCD multipole expansion, we derive the dissociation cross sections of heavy quarkonia by thermal gluons at next-to-leading order (NLO, also known as inelastic parton scattering dissociation) in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in the framework of second order quantum mechanical perturbation theory. While suffering divergence (infrared and soft-collinear divergences) in vacuum, the cross sections thus derived become finite in the QGP as rendered by the finite thermal gluon masses. In contrast to the leading order (LO, also known as gluo-dis…
Transport equations have been applied successfully to describe the quarkonium evolution inside the quark-gluon plasma, which include both plasma screening effects and recombination. We demonstrate how the quarkonium transport equation is derived from QCD by using the open quantum system framework and effective field theory. Weak coupling and Markovian approximations used in the derivation are justified from a separation of scales. By solving the equations numerically, we study the Upsilon production in heavy ion collisions.
Non-equilibrium corrections to the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in a hot and dense QCD medium modify the "hard thermal loops" (HTL). The HTLs determine the retarded, advanced, and symmetric (time-ordered) propagators for gluons with soft momenta as well as the Debye screening and Landau damping mass scales. We compute such corrections to a thermal as well as to a non-thermal fixed point. The screening and damping mass scales are sensitive to the bulk pressure and hence to (pseudo-) critical dynamical scaling of the bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second-order critical point. …
We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC against which the $AA$ rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. We also provide an assessment of the theoretical uncertainties in these benchmarks. We then discuss some of the cold matter effects on quarkonia production, including nuclear absorption, scattering by produced hadrons, and energy loss in the medium. Hot matter effects that could reduce the observed quarkonium rates such as color …
Emphasizing the possibility of moderate suppression of heavy quarkonium states, we invite some attention towards the issue of real time evolution of quarkonia during the cooling phase of quark gluon plasma(QGP). In this context, we have used time dependent perturbation theory to show that $Υ(1S)$, $Υ(2S)$, $J/Ψ$ can further be dissociated in the medium at a temperature below their dissociation thresholds even though they survive the Debye screening. We have presented and compared the dissociation probabilities and dissociation rates of these states in real and complex valued potential in this …
By means of effective field theory techniques, we study the modifications of some properties of weakly coupled heavy quarkonium states propagating through a quark-gluon plasma at temperatures much smaller than the heavy quark mass, m_Q. Two different cases are considered, corresponding to two different hierarchies between the typical size of the bound state, r, the binding energy, E, the temperature, T, and the screening mass, m_D. The first case corresponds to the hierarchy m_Q >> 1/r >> T >> E >> m_D, relevant for moderate temperatures, and the second one to the hierarchy m_Q >> T >> 1/r, m_…
