We study the bottomonium screening masses in a 2+1 flavor QCD medium on the lattice using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark(HISQ) discretization for the quarks. We focus on a wide temperature range in the region $350~{\rm MeV}\le T < 1000 ~{\rm MeV}$, and perform our calculations on three different lattice spacings to control the lattice cut-off effects, corresponding to temporal lattice extent of $N_τ=8,10,12$. From a detailed study of the temperature dependence of screening masses we conclude that while the $η_b(1S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ states melt at $T>500$ MeV, the scalar and axial-vector states $χ_{b0}(1P)$ and $h_b(1P)$ melt already at $T>350$ MeV.
We study the fate of P wave bottomonium states in the quark-gluon plasma, using a spectral function analysis of euclidean lattice correlators. The correlators are obtained from lattice QCD simulations with two light quark flavours on highly anisotropic lattices, treating the bottom quark nonrelativistically. We find clear indications of melting immediately after the deconfinement transition.
Using Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD), we study heavy quark mass dependence of S-wave and P-wave bottomonium correlators for 0.42Tc <= T <= 2.09Tc and study spectral functions of S-wave bottomonium states moving in a thermal bath at these temperatures using Maximum Entropy Method with NRQCD kernel. For the studied momentum range, the energy of moving states shows quadratic momentum-dependence and the width of moving states does not show significant changes as the momentum of bottomonium is increased. Also, we find that in correlator ratios, the temperature effect is larger than the effect caused …
In the investigation of in-medium modifications of quarkonia and for determining heavy quark diffusion coefficients, correlation functions play a crucial role. For the first time we perform a continuum extrapolation of charmonium and bottomonium correlators in the vector channel based on non-perturbatively clover-improved Wilson fermions in quenched lattice QCD. Calculations were done at 4 different lattice spacings, spatial extents between 96 and 192, aspect ratio from 1/6 to 1/2, for 5 temperatures between $T/T_c = 0.75$ and $T/T_c = 2.2$. We interpolate between different quark masses to mat…
We investigate the properties of S-and P-wave bottomonium states in the vicinity of the deconfinement transition temperature. The light degrees of freedom are represented by dynamical lattice QCD configurations of the HotQCD collaboration with $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors. Bottomonium correlators are obtained from bottom quark propagators, computed in nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) under the background of these gauge field configurations. The spectral functions for the $^3S_1$ ($Υ$) and $^3P_1$ ($χ_{b1}$) channel are extracted from the Euclidean time correlators using a novel Bayesian…
The behavior of bottomonium state correlators at non-zero temperature, $140.4 (β= 6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV), where the transition temperature is $154(9)$ (MeV), is studied, using lattice NRQCD on $48^3 \times 12$ HotQCD HiSQ action configurations with light dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ ($m_{u,s}/m_s = 0.05$) staggered quarks. In order to understand finite temperature effects on quarkonium states, zero temperature behavior of bottomonium correlators is compared based on $32^4$ ($β= 6.664, 6.800$ and $6.950$) and $48^3 \times 64$ ($β= 7.280)$ lattices. We find that temperature effects on…
We investigate the quarkonia correlators in QCD with no light quarks within a potential model with different screened potentials. Our results for the temperature dependence of the charmonium and bottomonium correlators are qualitatively consistent with existing and preliminary lattice results. We identify however, a much reacher structure in the correlators than the one seen on the lattice.
We study the temperature dependence of bottomonium for temperatures in the range 0.4 Tc < T < 2.1 Tc, using non-relativistic dynamics for the bottom quark and full relativistic lattice QCD simulations for Nf=2 light flavors. We consider the behaviour of the correlators in Euclidean space, we analyze the associated spectral functions and we study the dependence on the momentum. Our results are amenable to a successful comparison with effective field theories. They help build a coherent picture of the behaviour of bottomonium in the plasma, consistent which the current LHC results.
We study quarkonium spectral functions at high temperatures using potential model with complex potential. The real part of the potential is constrained by the lattice QCD data on static quark anti-quark correlation functions, while the imaginary part of the potential is taken from perturbative calculations. We find that the imaginary part of the potential has significant effect on quarkonium spectral functions, in particular, it leas to the dissolution of the 1S charmonium and excited bottomonium states at temperatures about 250 MeV and melting of the ground state bottomonium at temperatures s…
We present continuum extrapolated results of charmonium and bottomonium correlators in the vector channel at several temperatures below and above $T_c$. The continuum extrapolation jointly performed with the interpolations to have physical values of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ masses in the confined phase is based on calculations on several large quenched isotropic lattices using clover-improved Wilson valence fermions carrying different quark masses. The extrapolated lattice correlators are confronted with perturbation theory results incorporating resummed thermal effects around the threshold from pNRQCD a…
We study charmonium correlators and spectral functions in quenched QCD, using Clover improved Wilson fermions on very fine (0.015 fm) isotropic lattices at 0.75 Tc and 1.5 Tc. We use a new approach to distinguish the zero mode contribution from the other contributions. Once this is removed, we find that the ratios of correlators to reconstructed correlators remain almost unity at all distances. The ground state peaks of spectral functions obtained at 0.75 Tc are reliable and robust. The present accuracy and limited number of points in the temporal direction at 1.5 Tc do not allow for a reliabl…
We discuss the calculations of quarkonium spectral functions in potential models and their implications for the interpretation of the lattice data on quarkonium correlators. In particular, we find that melting of different quarkonium states does not lead to significant change in the Euclidean time correlators. The large change of the quarkonium correlators above deconfinement observed in the scalar and axial-vector channels appears to be due to the zero mode contribution.
We have developed two methods for handling $b$ quarks in lattice QCD. One uses NRQCD (now improved to include radiative corrections) and the other uses Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ), extrapolating to the $b$ quark from lighter masses and using multiple lattice spacings to control discretisation errors. Comparison of results for the two different methods gives confidence in estimates of lattice QCD systematic errors, since they are very different in these two cases. Here we show results for heavyonium hyperfine splittings and vector current-current correlator moments using HISQ quarks…
We discuss the behavior of charmonia and bottomonia correlators and spectral functions above the deconfinement temperature and determine melting temperatures for different mesonic states.
The pseudoscalar correlator is an ideal lattice probe for thermal modifications to quarkonium spectra, given that it is not compromised by a contribution from a large transport peak. We construct a perturbative spectral function incorporating resummed thermal effects around the threshold and vacuum asymptotics above the threshold, and compare the corresponding imaginary-time correlators with continuum-extrapolated lattice data for quenched SU(3) at several temperatures. Modest differences are observed, which may originate from non-perturbative mass shifts or renormalization factors, however no…
I discuss the temperature dependence of quarkonium correlators calculated in lattice QCD. I show that the dominant source of the temperature dependence comes from the zero mode contribution, while the the temperature dependence associated with melting of bound states is quite small. I study the zero mode contribution quantitatively for different quark masses and show that it is well described by a quasi-particle model with temperature dependent heavy quark mass. As a byproduct an estimate of the medium dependence of the heavy quark mass is obtained.
To study the in-medium modification of quarkonium properties, charmonium correlators at $140.4 (β=6.664) \le T \le 221 (β= 7.280)$ (MeV) are calculated using the NRQCD formalism on $48^3 \times 12$ gauge configurations with dynamical $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavors of Highly Improved Staggered Quarks (HISQ). To determine the "zero energy shift" for these lattices, we perform a fine zero temperature scan ($β=6.664, 6.740, 6.800, 6.880, 6.950, 7.030, 7.150$ and $7.280$). We find that the temperature dependence of charmonium correlators is stronger than the temperature dependence of bottomonium correlators…
We present progress results from the FASTSUM collaboration's programme to determine the spectrum of the bottomonium system as a function of temperature using a variety of approaches. In this contribution, the Backus Gilbert method is used to reconstruct spectral functions from NRQCD meson correlator data from FASTSUM's anisotropic ensembles at nonzero temperature. We focus in particular on the resolving power of the method, providing a demonstration of how the underlying resolution functions can be probed by exploiting the Laplacian nature of the NRQCD kernel. We conclude with estimates of the…
The sequential melting of the bottomonium states is one of the important signals for the existence of a quark gluon plasma. The study of bottomonia spectral functions on the lattice is a difficult task for many reasons. Calculations based on NRQCD, that are commonly used for such purpose, are not applicable at high temperatures. In this work we propose a new method to study this problem by calculating the spatial screening masses of bottomonium states. We calculate the spatial meson correlators and extract the screening masses for mesons in different quantum channels using highly improved stag…
We present the finite temperature spectra of both bottomonium and charmonium, obtained from a consistent lattice QCD based potential picture. Starting point is the complex in-medium potential extracted on full QCD lattices with dynamical u,d and s quarks, generated by the HotQCD collaboration. Using the generalized Gauss law approach, vetted in a previous study on quenched QCD, we fit ${\rm Re}[V]$ with a single temperature dependent parameter $m_D$, the Debye screening mass, and confirm the up to now tentative values of ${\rm Im}[V]$. The obtained analytic expression for the complex potential…
We study quarkonium correlators and spectral functions at zero and finite temperature in QCD with only heavy quarks using potential models combined with perturbative QCD. First, we show that this approach can describe the quarkonium correlation function at zero temperature. Using a class of screened potentials based on lattice calculations of the static quark-antiquark free energy we calculate spectral functions at finite temperature. We find that all quarkonium states, with the exception of the $1S$ bottomonium, dissolve in the deconfined phase at temperatures smaller than $1.5T_c$, in contra…
In this work, we strive to gain insight into thermal modifications of charmonium and bottomonium bound states as well as the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The desired information is contained in the spectral function which can not be calculated on the lattice directly. Instead, the correlator given by an integration over the spectral function times an integration kernel is obtained. Extracting the spectral function is an ill-posed inversion problem and various different solutions have been proposed. We focus on a comparison to a spectral function obtained from combining perturbative and p…
We extend our lattice QCD potential based study arXiv:1509.07366 (JHEP 1512 (2015) 101) of the in-medium properties of heavy quark bound states to P-wave bottomonium and charmonium. Similar to the behavior found in the S-wave channel their spectra show a characteristic broadening, as well as mass shifts to lower energy with increasing temperature. In contrast to the S-wave states, finite angular momentum leads to the survival of spectral peaks even at temperatures, where the continuum threshold reaches below the bound state remnant mass. We elaborate on the ensuing challenges in defining quark…
The HPQCD collaboration has used radiatively-improved NonRelativistic QCD (NRQCD) for $b$ quarks in bottomonium to determine the decay rate of $Υ$ and $Υ^\prime$ mesons to leptons in lattice QCD. Using time-moments of vector bottomonium current-current correlators, we are also able to determine the $b$ quark mass in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme. We use the same NRQCD $b$ quarks and Highly Improved Staggered Quark (HISQ) light quarks -- with masses down to their physical values -- to give a complete picture of heavy-light meson decay constants including those for vector mesons. We also s…
In order to understand the experimental data on heavy quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC it is necessary (though not sufficient) to pinpoint the properties of heavy $Q\bar{Q}$ bound states in the deconfined quark-gluon plasma, including their dissolution. Here we present recent results on the temperature dependence of bottomonium and charmonium correlators, as well as their spectral functions in a lattice QCD based effective field theory called NRQCD, surveying temperatures close to the crossover transition $140 {\rm MeV} < T< 249 {\rm MeV}$. The spectra are reconstr…
We report first results for spectral functions of charmonium in 2-flavour QCD. The spectral functions are determined from vector and pseudoscalar correlators on a dynamical, anisotropic lattice. J/psi and eta_c are found to survive well into the deconfined phase before melting away at T<~2T_c. Current systematic uncertainties prevent us from drawing any definite conclusions at this stage.
We study hadronic correlation functions in the interacting instanton liquid model, both at zero and nonzero temperature $T$. At zero $T$ we investigate the dependence of the correlators on the instanton ensemble, in particular the effect of the fermionic determinant. We demonstrate that quark-induced correlations between instantons are important, especially in the repulsive $η'$ and $δ$-meson channels. We also calculate a large number of mesonic and baryonic correlation functions as a function of temperature. We find three different types of behavior as $T\to T_c$. The vector channels $ρ,a_1,Δ…
We present the final results of our high statistics study on the properties of bottomonium and charmonium at finite temperature. We focus on the temperature range around the crossover transition $150\leq T\leq 410$MeV, relevant for current heavy ion collision experiments. The QCD medium degrees of freedom which consist of dynamical u,d, and s quarks and gluons are captured by realistic state-of-the art ($m_π\approx 161$MeV) lattice QCD simulations of the HotQCD collaboration. For the heavy quarks we deploy the non-relativistic effective field theory of QCD, NRQCD. The in-medium properties of q…
We investigate the in-medium modifications of heavy quarkonia in the vector channel and the heavy quark diffusion coefficient by comparing Euclidean correlators from the lattice to a perturbative spectral function. On the lattice side, we work with continuum extrapolated data from four different large and fine lattices with Clover-improved Wilson fermions in the quenched approximation at five temperatures (0.75, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 2.25$T_c$). On the perturbative side, we use a combination of pNRQCD and vacuum asymptotics to describe the spectral function. After accounting for systematic errors,…
Recent progresses in lattice studies of heavy quark and quarkonium at non-zero temperature are discussed. Formulating a tail of spectral functions as a transport coefficient allows lattice determination of momentum diffusion coefficient ($κ$) for charm quark in the heavy quark mass limit and lattice determination of heavy quark/heavy anti-quark chemical equilibration rate in NRQCD. Quenched lattice study on a large volume gives $κ/T^3 = 1.8 \cdots 3.4$ in the continuum limit. A recent study with $N_f = 2+1$ configurations estimates the charmonium chemical equilibration rate $Γ_{\rm chem}$. At …
Many measurements of quarkonium suppression at the LHC, e.g. the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of $J/Ψ$, are well described by a multitude of different models. Thus pinpointing the underlying physics aspects is difficult and guidance based on first principles is needed. Here we present the current status of our ongoing high precision study of in-medium spectral properties of both bottomonium and charmonium based on NRQCD on the lattice. This effective field theory allows us to capture the physics of quarkonium without modeling assumptions in a thermal QCD medium. In our study a first pr…
