We calculate the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D (m being the heavy-quark mass), at order m alpha_s^5. We first sequentially integrate out the scales m, m alpha_s and T, and, next, we carry out the calculations in the resulting effective theory using techniques of integration by regions. A collinear region is identified, which contributes at this order. We also discuss the implications of our results concerning heavy quarkonium suppression in heavy ion collisions.
A calculation of the melting temperatures of heavy quarkonium states with the holographic potential was introduced in a previous work. In this paper, we consider the holographic potential at sub-leading order, which permits finite coupling corrections to be taken into account. It is found that this correction lowers the dissociation temperatures of heavy quarkonium.
The relativistic correction of the AdS/CFT implied heavy quark potential is examined within the framework of the potential model. For the typical range of the coupling strength appropriate to heavy-ion collisions, we find the correction is significant in size and lowers the dissociation temperature of quarkonia.
The quarkonium states in a quark-gluon plasma is examined with the potential implied by AdS/CFT duality. Both the vanila AdS-Schwarzschild metric and the one with an infrared cutoff are considered. The calculated dissociation temperatures for $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ are found to agree with the lattice results within a factor of two.
We report a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium energy levels and decay widths in a quark- gluon plasma whose temperature is much smaller than the inverse radius of the bound state, based on a Non-Relativistic Effective Field theory framework for heavy quarkonium at finite temperature. Relevance for the phenomenology of the Y(1S) in heavy ion collisions is also discussed.
Large N QCD is mostly governed by planar diagrams and should show linear confinement when these diagrams are suitably summed. The linear confinement of quarks in a class of these theories using gravity duals that capture the logarithmic runnings of the coupling constants in the IR and strongly coupled asymptotic conformal behavior in the UV was studied in our previous work. We also extended the theories to high temperatures and argued the possibilities of meltings and suppressions of heavy quarkonium states. In this paper we give a formal proof of melting using very generic choices of UV compl…
We report about a recent calculation of the heavy quarkonium mass and decay width in a quark-gluon plasma, whose temperature T and screening mass m_D satisfy the hierarchy m alpha_s >> pi T >> m alpha_s^2 >> m_D, m being the heavy-quark mass, up to order m alpha_s^5. The calculation may be relevant to understand the behavior of the Y(1S) in a quark-gluon plasma at present-day colliders.
In the early stages of heavy-ion collisions, the hot QCD matter expands more longitudinally than transversely. This imbalance causes the system to become rapidly colder in the longitudinal direction and a local momentum anisotropy appears. In this paper, we study the heavy-quarkonium spectrum in the presence of a small plasma anisotropy. We work in the framework of pNRQCD at finite temperature. We inspect arrangements of non-relativistic and thermal scales complementary to those considered in the literature. In particular, we consider temperatures larger and Debye masses smaller than the bindi…
We consider the quarkonium diffusion, dissociation and recombination inside quark-gluon plasma. We compute scattering amplitudes in potential nonrelativistic QCD for relevant processes. These processes include the gluon absorption/emission at the order $gr$, inelastic scattering at the order $g^2r$ and elastic scattering with medium constituents at the order $g^2r^2$. We show these amplitudes satisfy the Ward identity. We also consider one-loop corrections. The dipole interaction between the color singlet and octet is not running at the one-loop level. Interference between the tree-level gluon…
Heavy quarkonium suppression was proposed long ago as a signal of the formation of a deconfined phase in heavy ion collisions. Originally the mechanism responsible for this suppression was thought to be color screening. However perturbative computations and recent lattice studies suggest the existence of an imaginary part of the potential which could have a more important role for suppression than screening. In this work we review some general aspects of effective field theories for heavy quarkonium in the medium and discuss the physical phenomena behind the imaginary part of the potential and…
We derive equations of motion for the reduced density matrix of a heavy quarkonium in contact with a quark-gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium. These equations allow in particular a proper treatment of the regime when the temperature of the plasma is comparable to the binding energy of the quarkonium. These equations are used to study how the quarkonium approaches equilibrium with the plasma, and we discuss the corresponding entropy increase, or free energy decrease, depending on the temperature regime. The effect of collisions can be accounted for by the generalization of the imaginary potent…
The Color-Octet Model has been used successfully to analyze many problems in heavy quarkonium production. We examine some of the conceptual and practical problems of the soft gluon emission process in the Color-Octet Model. We use a potential model to describe the initial and final states in the soft gluon emission process, as the emission occurs at a late stage after the production of the heavy quark pair. It is found in this model that the soft gluon M1 transition, 1S0(8)->3S1(1), dominates over the E1 transition, 3PJ(8)->3S1(1), for J/psi and psi' production. Such a dominance may help resol…
Quarkonium production in high-energy proton (deuteron)-nucleus collisions is investigated in the color glass condensate framework. We employ the color evaporation model assuming that the quark pair produced from dense small-x gluons in the nuclear target bounds into a quarkonium outside the target. The unintegrated gluon distribution at small Bjorken x in the nuclear target is treated with the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling corrections. For the gluons in the proton, we examine two possible descriptions, unintegrated gluon distribution and ordinary collinear gluon distributio…
In relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC, a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created for a short duration of about 10fm/c. Quarkonia (bound states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$) are sensitive probes of this phase on length scales comparable to the size of the bound states which are less than 1fm. Observations of quarkonia in these collisions provide us with a lot of information about how the presence of a QGP affects various quarkonium states. This has motivated the development of the theory of heavy quarks and their bound states in a thermal medium, and its application to the phenom…
I consider the dissociation of a boosted quarkonium in a quark-gluon plasma. This dissociation is due to absorption of a thermal gluon. I discuss the dissociation in terms of the velocity of the quarkonium and the temperature of the quark-gluon plasma. I compare this dissociation rate to the one calculated without including the velocity of the quarkonium.
In this contribution, we will present a short overview of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) approach as a tool for studying the 3-dimensional structure of hadrons in high-energy (un)polarized hadron collisions. We will then summarize the present status of a running research programme that aims at constraining the poorly known transverse momentum dependent gluon Sivers function, through the study of single spin asymmetries in quarkonium (mainly $J/ψ$), pion, and $D$-meson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC. Finally, we will shortly discuss perspectives for this field…
Quarkonium suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions has been studied experimentally for decades to probe the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. For this purpose, complete theoretical understanding of the time evolution of quarkonium inside the quark-gluon plasma is needed but challenging. Here I review recent progress in applying the open quantum system framework to describe the real-time dynamics of quarkonium, with a focus on the gauge-invariant chromoelectric field correlators of the plasma that control the dynamics.
Using the chromo-electric dipole coupling Hamiltonian from QCD multipole expansion, we derive the dissociation cross sections of heavy quarkonia by thermal gluons at next-to-leading order (NLO, also known as inelastic parton scattering dissociation) in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in the framework of second order quantum mechanical perturbation theory. While suffering divergence (infrared and soft-collinear divergences) in vacuum, the cross sections thus derived become finite in the QGP as rendered by the finite thermal gluon masses. In contrast to the leading order (LO, also known as gluo-dis…
The leading color-singlet contribution to the fragmentation function for a gluon to split into spin-triplet S-wave quarkonium is presented. In the case of charmonium, we find that this color-singlet term is always negligible compared to the leading color-octet contribution.
Heavy quarkonium continues to play a central role in the study of nuclear matter under extremes of temperature and density in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this talk I report on recent developments in the theoretical description of quarkonium in-medium dynamics using the open-quantum systems approach. Not only does it provide a clear interpretation of the imaginary part of the complex heavy-quark potential but also reveals that a subtle interplay between screening and wavefunction decoherence is responsible for the melting of heavy quarkonium states.
It is shown that the amplitude for the scattering of a heavy quarkonium system from a nucleon near threshold is completely determined by the fraction of angular momentum, as well as linear momentum, carried by gluons in the nucleon. A form for the quarkonium-nucleon non-relativistic potential is derived.
Soft-gluon resummation within the framework of heavy quarkonium hadroproduction is considered. A few selected cases are studied in detail. A sizeable increase of the cross sections with respect to the next-to-leading order predictions with central factorization/renormalization scale choice can generally be observed. Improvements in the dependence of the cross sections on the two scales, especially when they are kept equal, are also found.
We present the study of accessing unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon TMDs in J/ψ and Υ(1S) production in unpolarized proton-proton collision at LHC, RHIC and AFTER energies. Non- relativistic QCD based color octet model (COM) is used for estimating quarkonium production rates within transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism. A comparison is drawn between the experimental data and the transverse momentum distribution of quarkonium obtained in COM and color evaporation model.
In this work an improved potential model for quarkonium spectra (charmonium, bottomonium) is constructed. Beside the one-gluon exchange and a linear confinement potential, the model includes systematically effects from two-gluon exchange and the induced interaction (i.e. t-channel exchanges of quark-antiquark bound states). These turn out to be important in order to reproduce correctly the fine- and hyperfine structure of the charmonium and bottomonium states. It is demonstrated that such a satisfactory description of the quarkonium spectra can be obtained with parameters (quark masses, strong…
Using an effective Hamiltonian derived from the QCD multipole expansion, we calculate the cross sections of gluo-dissociation of heavy quarkonia in the quark-gluon plasma, by including both the chromo-electric dipole ($E_1$) as well as the chromo-magnetic dipole ($M_1$) transition mechanisms. While the former allows to reproduce the results from operator-product-expansion calculations in the Coulomb approximation, the latter as a novel contribution is shown to be significant at low energies close to the threshold. Using thus obtained cross sections, we further carry out a full calculation of t…
We explore how the positivity of the P_T-integrated eta_c-hadroproduction cross-section computed at NLO in alpha_s can set up constraints on the x-dependence of gluon PDFs at low scales.
Heavy quarkonium production will provide for novel opportunities to study the gluonic structure of the nucleon in the near future. Near threshold quarkonium production allows for direct experimental access of the dynamic origin of the nucleon mass as well as the nature of the color Van der Waals force, while quarkonium production at high energies can be used to create a full three-dimensional tomographic image of the gluons inside the nucleon, constraining the gluonic radius of the nucleon.
In this paper, we study the application of the recently proposed soft gluon factorization (SGF) to exclusive quarkonium production or decay. We find that in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization framework there are too many nonperturbative parameters. Thanks to the factorization of kinematical physics from dynamical physics, the SGF significantly reduces the number of nonperturbative parameters. Therefore, the SGF can improve our predictive power of exclusive quarkonium production or decay. By applying to $η_c+γ$ production at B-factories, our result is the closest one to data among all theore…
The inclusive hadronic production of $η_Q$($η_c$ or $η_b$) pair is proposed to extract the transverse momentum dependent(TMD) gluon distribution functions. We use nonrelativistic QCD(NRQCD) for the production of $η_Q$. Under nonrelativistic limit TMD factorization for this process is assumed to make a lowest order calculation. For unpolarized initial hadrons, unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon distributions can be extracted by studying different angular distributions.
The dominant production mechanism for heavy quark-antiquark bound states in very high energy processes is fragmentation, the splitting of a high energy parton into a quarkonium state and other partons. We show that the fragmentation functions $D(z,μ)$ describing these processes can be calculated using perturbative QCD. We calculate the fragmentation functions for a gluon to split into S-wave quarkonium states to leading order in the QCD coupling constant. The leading logarithms of $μ/m_Q$, where $μ$ is the factorization scale and $m_Q$ is the heavy quark mass, are summed up using Altarelli-Par…
We present the calculation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s of the fragmentation function of a gluon into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet spin-singlet S-wave channel. To calculate the real NLO corrections, we adapt a subtraction scheme introduced by Frixione, Kunszt, and Signer. Ultraviolet and infrared divergences in the real NLO corrections are calculated analytically by evaluating the phase-space integrals of the subtraction terms using dimensional regularization. The subtracted phase-space integrals are then evaluated in 4 space-time dimensions. The divergences in the virtual …
We examine carefully bottomonia hadroproduction in proton colliders, especially focusing on the LHC, as a way of probing the gluon density in protons. To this end we develop some previous work, getting quantitative predictions and concluding that our proposal can be useful to perform consistency checks of the parameterization sets of different parton distribution functions.
We investigate the low transverse momentum heavy quarkonium ($J/ψ$, $Υ$) productions in the forward rapidity region of $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC as an important probe to the transverse momentum tomography of the gluons in hadrons in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework. By implementing the Sudakov resummation consistently in the CGC formalism, we achieve an excellent agreement between the improved CGC calculations and the LHC data. We show that both the small-$x$ and the Sudakov effects are essential for a complete description of heavy quarkonium productions in the low transver…
The short-distance coefficients for the color-octet 3S1 term in the fragmentation function for a gluon to split into heavy quarkonium states is calculated to order alpha_s^2. The gauge-invariant definition of the fragmentation function by Collins and Soper is employed. Ultraviolet divergences are removed using the MS-bar renormalization procedure. The longitudinal term in the fragmentation function agrees with a previous calculation by Beneke and Rothstein. The next-to-leading order correction to the transverse term disagrees with a previous calculation.
A strong $J/ψ$ suppression in central Au+Au collisions has been observed by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We develop a hydro+$J/ψ$ model in which hot quark-gluon matter is described by the full (3+1)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics and $J/ψ$ is treated as an impurity traversing through the matter. The experimental $J/ψ$ suppression pattern in mid-rapidity is reproduced well by the sequential melting of $χ_{\rm c}$, $ψ'$, and $J/ψ$ in dynamically expanding fluid. The melting temperature of directly produced $J/ψ$ is well constrained by the participa…
The functions of the gluon fragmentation into $^3P_J$ quarkonium are calculated to order $α_s^2$. With the recent progress in analysing quarkonium systems in QCD we show explicitly how the socalled divergence in the limit of the zero-binding energy, which is related to $P$-wave quarkonia, is treated correctly in the case of fragmentation functions. The obtained fragmentation functions satisfy explicitly at the order of $α_s^2$ the Altarelli-Parisi equation and when $z\rightarrow 0$ they behave as $z^{-1}$ as expected. Some comments on the previous results are made.
In this paper, we propose a new calculation method for the twist-3 gluon Sivers effect within the collinear factorization approach. The method called pole calculation has been used to derive the cross section formula for the single transverse-spin asymmetry(SSA) as a standard method. We point out that we encounter a problem when we try to apply the pole calculation to the SSA in the heavy quarkonium production whose hadronization mechanism is described by non-relativistic QCD(NRQCD) framework. We show that the new calculation method solves this problem and successfully reproduces known results…
The measurements of heavy quarkonium suppression at RHIC and LHC urge theory to develop intuitive as well as quantitative methods for the description of $Q\bar{Q}$ melting in the quark-gluon plasma. Here I will present a brief sketch on the effective field theory strategies underlying the definition of the heavy quark static potential and report on two recent advances in the extraction and interpretation of such a potential. On the one side, progress has been made in obtaining its values from lattice QCD, which promises to make possible investigating its real and imaginary part non-perturbativ…
Following the operator definition of the fragmentation function developed by Collins and Soper, we compute the gluon-to-$h_c$ fragmentation function at the lowest order in the velocity expansion in NRQCD factorization approach. Utilizing some modern technique developed in the area of multi-loop calculation, we are able to analytically deduce the infrared-finite color-singlet short-distance coefficient associated with the fragmentation function. The fragmentation probability for gluon into $h_c$ is estimated to be order $10^{-6}$.
We analyze the uncertainties induced by different definitions of the momentum fraction $z$ in the application of gluon to heavy quarkonium fragmentation function. We numerically calculate the initial $g \to J / ψ$ fragmentation functions by using the non-covariant definitions of $z$ with finite gluon momentum and find that these fragmentation functions have strong dependence on the gluon momentum $\vec{k}$. As $| \vec{k} | \to \infty$, these fragmentation functions approach to the fragmentation function in the light-cone definition. Our numerical results show that large uncertainties remains w…
We study the impact of magnetic fields generated in relativistic heavy ion collisions on the decay probability of quarkonium produced in the central rapidity region. The quark and anti-quark components are subject to mutually orthogonal electric and magnetic fields in the quarkonium comoving frame. In the presence of an electric field, quarkonium has finite dissociation probability. We use the WKB approximation to derive the dissociation probability. We found that quarkonium dissociation energy, i.e. the binding energy at which dissociation probability is of order unity, increases with the mag…
We consider the potential-model approach for obtaining the spectrum of charmonium and bottomonium, replacing the usual gluon propagator by one obtained from lattice simulations. The resulting spectra are compared to the corresponding ones in the Cornell-potential case. We also estimate the interquark distance in both cases.
In this paper, the soft gluon resummation effect in double heavy quarkonium production at the LHC is studied. By applying the transverse momentum dependent factorization formalism, the large logarithms introduced by the small total transverse momentum of heavy quarkonium pair final state system, are resummed to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling at the Next-to-Leading Logarithm accuracy. We also compare our result with the LHC data. We find that the distribution shape predicted by resummation calculation is consistent with experimental data very well. Since this pro…
We use the open quantum system formalism to study the dynamical in-medium evolution of quarkonium. The system of quarkonium is described by potential non-relativistic QCD while the environment is a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma in local thermal equilibrium below the melting temperature of the quarkonium. Under the Markovian approximation, it is shown that the Lindblad equation leads to a Boltzmann transport equation if a Wigner transform is applied to the system density matrix. Our derivation illuminates how the microscopic time-reversibility of QCD is consistent with the time-irreversible…
We study the energy and nuclear A dependence of the hadronic production of heavy quarkonia. We review theoretical ideas which have been put forward, seeking a consistent global picture reconciling the large effects in quarkonia with the small nuclear effects observed in continuum Drell Yan production. The data indicates that shadowing or leading twist modifications of parton distributions can be ruled out as explanations, leaving higher twist energy loss. {}From general principles the maximum allowed energy loss of partons traversing the nuclear medium can be related to the parton transverse m…
Dissociation of quarkonium in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is a long standing topic in relativistic heavy-ion collisions because it has been believed to signal one of the fundamental natures of the QGP -- Debye screening due to the liberation of color degrees of freedom. Among recent new theoretical developments is the application of open quantum system framework to quarkonium in the QGP. Open system approach enables us to describe how dynamical as well as static properties of QGP influences the time evolution of quarkonium in a coherent way. Currently, there are several master equations for quark…
Constituent quark models, while successful, require a great deal of fine tuning of the short distance interactions by introducing phenomenological gluonic form factors which are ultimately designed to accurately reproduce the spectrum. We apply and develop renormalization ideas to reduce the short distance sensitivity and show that, as naively expected, but not explicitly implemented in the models, the physics of binding is entirely linked to the string tension whereas leptonic decays depend more on the gluon exchange potential. We also show how the spectrum of S- and D- $1^{--}$ states is suc…
We examine angular distributions of leptons arising from the decay of J/psi in inclusive hadroproduction. Taking into account feed-down contributions from chi_{1,2}, a flat distribution emerges without fine tuning parameters. Changes in the ratio of direct to total J/psi cross sections would change this distribution significantly. Such angular distributions are, therefore, confirmatory tests of the J/psi suppression signal for the production of a quark-gluon plasma. Related effects are predicted for the Upsilon.
By the use of the gauge/gravity duality, we calculate the imaginary part of heavy quarkonium potential and thermal width with the effect of gluon condensate which is absent in AdS$_{5}$ background. Our results show that the dropping gluon condensate reduces the absolute value of imaginary potential and therefore decreases the thermal width both in "exact" and "approximate" approach implying that the heavy quarkonium has a weaker bound with the increase of gluon condensate. In addition, the thermal width will disappear at a critical condensate value, which indicates the dissociation of quarkoni…
We reconsider a plasma with an anisotropy imposed on the momentum distribution of the system and study the real time static potential for quarkonia. The distribution function is normalised so as to preserve the particle number in an ideal gas, as required in the Keldysh-Schwinger formalism. In contrast to recent findings without this normalisation, a weak anisotropy does not lead to an increase in the melting temperature for bound states. To test for the maximal effect, we also investigate a gluonic medium in the limit of an asymptotically strong anisotropy. The spectral function of quarkonium…
In the limit of a high temperature T and a large quark-mass M, implying a small gauge coupling g, the heavy quark contribution to the spectral function of the electromagnetic current can be computed systematically in the weak-coupling expansion. We argue that the scale hierarchy relevant for addressing the disappearance ("melting") of the resonance peak from the spectral function reads M >> T > g^2 M > gT >> g^4 M, and review how the heavy scales can be integrated out one-by-one, to construct a set of effective field theories describing the low-energy dynamics. The parametric behaviour of the …
The polarization of quarkonium states produced in hadron collisions exhibits strong non-perturbative effects - for example, at small transverse momentum $p_t$ charmonia appear unpolarized, in sharp contradiction to the predictions of perturbation theory. The quark--gluon plasma is expected to screen away the non-perturbative physics; therefore those quarkonia which escape from the plasma should possess polarization as predicted by perturbative QCD. We estimate the expected $J/ψ$ polarization at small $p_t$, and find that it translates into the asymmetry of the $e^+e^- (μ^+μ^-)$ angular distrib…
