We review the relations between the full counting statistics and the field theory of electric circuits. We demonstrate that for large conductances the counting statistics is determined by non-trivial saddle-point of the field. Coulomb effects in this limit are presented as quantum corrections that can stongly renormalize the action at low energies.
We discuss the counting statistics and current noise associated with the double Josephson quasiparticle resonance point in a superconducting single electron transistor. The counting statistics are in general phase-dependent, despite the fact that the average current has no dependence on phase. Focusing on parameter regimes where the counting statistics have no phase-dependence, we use a general relation first derived by MacDonald in 1948 to obtain the full frequency-dependent shot noise directly from the counting statistics, without any further approximations. We comment on problems posed by t…
We study analytically the full counting statistics of charge transport through single molecules, strongly coupled to a weakly damped vibrational mode. The specifics of transport in this regime - a hierarchical sequence of avalanches of transferred charges, interrupted by "quiet" periods - make the counting statistics strongly non-Gaussian. We support our findings for the counting statistics as well as for the frequency-dependent noise power by numerical simulations, finding excellent agreement.
In the hot electron regime, electron-electron scattering strongly modifies not only the shot noise but also the full counting statistics. We employ a method based on a stochastic path integral to calculate the counting statistics of two systems in which noise in the hot electron regime has been experimentally measured. We give an analytical expression for the counting statistics of a chaotic cavity and find that heating due to electron-electron scattering renders the distribution of transmitted charge symmetric in the shot noise limit. We also discuss the frequency dispersion of the third orde…
We present measurements of the time-dependent fluctuations in electrical current in a voltage-biased tunnel junction. We were able to simultaneously extract the first three moments of the tunnel current counting statistics. Detailed comparison of the second and the third moment reveals that counting statistics is accurately described by the Poissonian distribution expected for spontaneous current fluctuations due to electron charge discreteness, realized in tunneling transport at negligible coupling to environment.
Full counting statistics is a powerful tool to characterize the noise and correlations in transport through mesoscopic systems. In this work, we propose the theory of conditional spin counting statistics, i.e., the statistical fluctuations of spin-up (down) current given the observation of the spin-down (up) current. In the context of transport through a single quantum dot, it is demonstrated that a strong Coulomb interaction leads to a conditional spin counting statistics that exhibits a substantial change in comparison to that without Coulomb repulsion. It thus can be served as an effective …
We present a stochastic path integral method to calculate the full counting statistics of conductors with energy conserving dephasing probes and dissipative voltage probes. The approach is explained for the experimentally important case of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, but is easily generalized to more complicated setups. For all geometries where dephasing may be modeled by a single one-channel dephasing probe we prove that our method yields the same full counting statistics as phase averaging of the cumulant generating function.
We discuss how threshold detectors can be used for a direct measurement of the full counting statistics (FCS) of current fluctuations and how to implement Jose phson junctions in this respect. We propose a scheme to characterize the full co unting statistics from the current dependence of the escape rate measured. We il lustrate the scheme with explicit results for tunnel, diffusive and quasi-ballis tic mesoscopic conductors.
We present a theory for the full distribution of current fluctuations in incoherent diffusive superconducting junctions, subjected to a voltage bias. This theory of full counting statistics of incoherent multiple Andreev reflections is valid for arbitrary applied voltage. We present a detailed discussion of the properties of the first four cumulants as well as the low and high voltage regimes of the full counting statistics. The work is an extension of the results of Pilgram and the author, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 086806 (2005).
Using a microscopic model for stochastic transport through a single quantum dot that is modified by the Coulomb interaction of environmental (weakly coupled) quantum dots, we derive generic properties of the full counting statistics for multi-stable Markovian transport systems. We study the temporal crossover from multi-modal to broad uni-modal distributions depending on the initial mixture, the long-term asymptotics and the divergence of the cumulants in the limit of a large number of transport branches. Our findings demonstrate that the counting statistics of a single resonant level may be u…
We explore the full counting statistics of single electron tunneling through a quantum dot using a quantum point contact as non-invasive high bandwidth charge detector. The distribution of counted tunneling events is measured as a function of gate and source-drain-voltage for several consecutive electron numbers on the quantum dot. For certain configurations we observe super-Poissonian statistics for bias voltages at which excited states become accessible. The associated counting distributions interestingly show a bimodal characteristic. Analyzing the time dependence of the number of electron …
Full counting statistics of electron transport is a powerful diagnostic tool for probing the nature of quantum transport beyond what is obtainable from the average current or conductance measurement alone. In particular, the non-Markovian dynamics of quantum dot molecule plays an important role in the nonequilibrium electron tunneling processes. It is thus necessary to understand the non-Markovian full counting statistics in a quantum dot molecule. Here we study the non-Markovian full counting statistics in two typical quantum dot molecules, namely, serially coupled and side-coupled double qua…
We describe a method for calculating the counting statistics of electronic transport through nanoscale devices with both sequential and cotunneling contributions. The method is based upon a perturbative expansion of the von Neumann equation in Liouvillian space, with current cumulants calculated from the resulting nonMarkovian master equation without further approximation. As application, we consider transport through a single quantum dot and discuss the effects of cotunneling on noise and skewness, as well as the properties of various approximation schemes.
We investigate the effect of weak interactions on the full counting statistics of charge transfer through an arbitrary mesoscopic conductor. We show that the main effect can be incorporated into an energy dependence of the transmission eigenvalues and study this dependence in a non-perturbative approach. An unexpected result is that all mesoscopic conductors behave at low energies like either a single or a double tunnel junction, which divides them into two broad classes.
Destructive interference of single-electron tunneling between three quantum dots can trap an electron in a coherent superposition of charge on two of the dots. Coupling to external charges causes decoherence of this superposition, and in the presence of a large bias voltage each decoherence event transfers a certain number of electrons through the device. We calculate the counting statistics of the transferred charges, finding a crossover from sub-Poissonian to super-Poissonian statistics with increasing ratio of tunnel and decoherence rates.
We present here a quantum mechanical framework for defining the statistics of measurements of time integrals of A(t), A(t) being a quantum mechanical variable. This is a generalization of the so-called full counting statistics proposed earlier for DC electric currents. We develop an influence functional formalism that allows us to study the quantum system along with the measuring device thus fully accounting for the action of the detector on the system to be measured. We define the full counting statistics of an arbitrary variable by means of an evolution operator that relates initial and fina…
We use the inchworm Quantum Monte Carlo method to investigate the full counting statistics of particle and energy currents in a strongly correlated quantum dot. Our method is used to extract the heat fluctuations and entropy production of a quantum thermoelectric device, as well as cumulants of the particle and energy currents. The energy--particle current cross correlations reveal information on the preparation of the system and the interplay of thermal and electric currents. We furthermore demonstrate the signature of a crossover from Coulomb blockade to Kondo physics in the energy current f…
The joint probability distribution in the full counting statistics (FCS) for noninteracting electrons is discussed for an arbitrary number of initially separate subsystems which are connected at t=0 and separated at a later time. A simple method to obtain the leading order long time contribution to the logarithm of the characteristic function is presented which simplifies earlier approaches. New explicit results for the determinant involving the scattering matrices are found. The joint probability distribution for two leads is discussed for Y-junctions and dots connected to four leads.
We investigate the dynamics of electron spin qubits in quantum dots. Measurement of the qubit state is realized by a charge current through the dot. The dynamics is described in the framework of the quantum trajectory approach, widely used in quantum optics, and we show that it can be applied successfully to problems in condensed matter physics. The relevant master equation dynamics is unravelled to simulate stochastic tunneling events of the current through the dot.Quantum trajectories are then used to extract the counting statistics of the current. We show how, in combination with an electro…
We review several ways of defining the statistics of charge that is transmitted through an electric circuit, the so-called "counting statistics". We first pursue two approaches that explain the origin of "negative probabilities" that have been found earlier in this context. The first analysis involves degrees of freedom of the electric circuit only. In the second approach an idealized charge detector is introduced. We study then general linear detectors and how their back action on the electric conductor affects the statistics of transferred charge. Phase-coherent conductors in the presence of…
Exact numerical results for the full counting statistics (FCS) of a one-dimensional tight-binding model of noninteracting electrons are presented at finite temperatures using an identity recently presented by Abanov and Ivanov. A similar idea is used to derive a new expression for the cumulant generating function for a system consisting of two quasi-one-dimensional leads connected by a quantum dot in the long time limit. This provides a generalization of the Levitov-Lesovik formula for such systems.
We study the effect of Coulomb interaction on the full counting statistics of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a single-level quantum dot in one arm in the regime of weak dot-lead and lead-lead tunnel couplings. In the absence of Coulomb interaction, the interference processes are of nonresonant nature with an even AB flux dependence and obey bidirectional Poissonian statistics. For large charging energy, the statistic of these processes changes. In addition, processes of resonant nature with an odd flux dependence appear. In the limit of strongly asymmetric tunnel couplings from the …
In order to fully characterize the noise associated with electron transport, with its severe consequences for solid-state quantum information systems, the theory of full counting statistics has been developed. It accounts for correlation effects associated with the statistics and effects of entanglement, but it remains a non-trivial task to account for interaction effects. In this article we present two examples: we describe electron transport through quantum dots with strong charging effects beyond perturbation theory in the tunneling, and we analyze current fluctuations in a diffusive intera…
The full counting statistics of a molecular level weakly interacting with a local phonon mode is derived. We find an analytic formula that gives the behavior of arbitrary irreducible moments of the distribution upon phonon excitation. The underlying competition between quasi-elastic and inelastic processes results in the formation of domains in parameter space characterized by a given sign in the jump of the irreducible moments. In the limit of perfect transmission, the corresponding distribution is distorted from Gaussian statistics for electrons to Poissonian transfer of holes above the inel…
We propose a theory that treats the current, noise, and, generally, the full current statistics of electron transfer in a mesoscopic system in a unified, simple and efficient way. The theory appears to be a circuit theory of $2\times 2$ matrices associated with Keldysh Green functions. We illustrate the theory by considering the big fluctuations of currents in various three-terminal circuits.
We examine the full counting statistics of electron transport through double quantum dots coupled in series, with particular attention being paid to the unique features originating from level renormalization. It is clearly illustrated that the energy renormalization gives rise to a dynamic charge blockade mechanism, which eventually results in super-Poissonian noise. Coupling of the double dots to an external heat bath leads to dephasing and relaxation mechanisms, which are demonstrated to suppress the noise in a unique way.
We study the charge transfer in a small grain oscillating between two leads. Coulomb blockade restricts the charge fluctuations in such a way that only zero or one additional electrons can sit on the grain. The system thus acts as a charge shuttle. We obtain the full counting statistics of charge transfer and discuss its behavior. For large oscillation amplitude the probability of transferring $\tilde n$ electrons per cycle is strongly peaked around one. The peak is asymmetric since its form is controlled by different parameters for $\tilde n>1$ and $\tilde n < 1$. Under certain conditions the…
Non-adiabatic charge pumping through a single-level quantum dot with periodically modulated parameters is studied theoretically. By means of a quantum-master-equation approach the full counting statistics of the system is obtained. We find a trinomial-probability distribution of the charge transfer, which adequately describes the reversal of the pumping current by sweeping the driving frequency. Further, we derive equations of motion for current and noise, and solve those numerically for two different driving schemes. Both show interesting features which can be fully analyzed due to the simple…
We developed a theoretical framework which extends the method of \textit{full counting statistics} (FCS) from conventional single channel Kondo screening schemes to multi-channel Kondo paradigm. The developed idea of FCS has been demonstrated considering an example of two-stage Kondo (2SK) model. We analyzed the charge transferred statistics in the strong-coupling regime of a 2SK model using non-equilibrium Keldysh formulation. A bounded value of Fano factor, $1\leq F\leq 5/3$, confirmed the cross-over regimes of charge transfered statistics in 2SK effect, from Poissonian to super-Poissonian. …
We propose a derivation of the full counting statistics of electronic current based on a positive-operator-valued measure. Our approach justifies the Levitov-Lesovik formula in the long-time limit, but can be generalized to the detection of finite-frequency noise correlations. The combined action of the projection postulate and the quantum formula for current noise at high frequencies imply an additional white noise. Estimates for this additional noise are in accordance with known experiments. We propose an experimental test of our conjecture by a simultaneous measurement of high- and low-freq…
Time-dependent driving influences the quantum and thermodynamic fluctuations of a system, changing the familiar physical picture of electronic noise which is an important source of information the about microscopic mechanism of quantum transport. Giving access to all cumulants of the current, the full counting statistics (FCS) is the powerful theoretical method to study fluctuations in nonequilibrium quantum systems. In this paper, we propose the application of FCS to consider periodic driven junctions. The combination of Floquet theory for time dynamics and nonequilibrium counting-field Green…
We have measured the full counting statistics (FCS) of current fluctuations in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) by real-time detection of single electron tunneling with a quantum point contact (QPC). This method gives direct access to the distribution function of current fluctuations. Suppression of the second moment (related to the shot noise) and the third moment (related to the asymmetry of the distribution) in a tunable semiconductor QD is demonstrated experimentally. With this method we demonstrate the ability to measure very low current and noise levels.
We report on measurements of single electron tunneling through a quantum dot using a quantum point contact as non-invasive charge detector with fast time response. We elaborate on the unambiguous identification of individual tunneling events and determine the distribution of transferred charges, the so-called full counting statistics. We discuss our data analysis, including the error estimates of the measurement, and show that the quality of our experimental results is sufficiently high to extract cumulants of the distribution up to the 20th order for short times.
We theoretically consider charge transport through two quantum dots coupled in series. The corresponding full counting statistics for noninteracting electrons is investigated in the limits of sequential and coherent tunneling by means of a master equation approach and a density matrix formalism, respectively. We clearly demonstrate the effect of quantum coherence on the zero-frequency cumulants of the transport process, focusing on noise and skewness. Moreover, we establish the continuous transition from the coherent to the incoherent tunneling limit in all cumulants of the transport process a…
We investigate the rectification and negative differential effects of full-counting statistics of conjugate thermal spin transport in a spin Seebeck engine. The engine is made by an electron/magnon interface diode driven by a temperature bias, of which the scaled cumulant generating function is formulated in the framework of nonequilibrium Green's function. The strongly fluctuating interfacial electron density of states induced by quantum dot is responsible for these intriguing properties. This work is relevant for designing efficient spin caloritronic engine and can broaden our view in nonequ…
We investigate the Full Counting Statistics of an electrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux, and in the presence of a classical fluctuating potential. Of interest is the suppression of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the distribution function of the transmitted charge. For a Gaussian fluctuating field we calculate the first three cumulants. The fluctuating potential causes a modulation of the conductance leading in the third cumulant to a term cubic in voltage and to a contribution correlating modulation of current and noise. In the high voltage regime we pre…
We study full counting statistics of electron tunneling in Coulomb-blockade systems in the limit of short measuring-time intervals. This limit is particularly suited to identify correlations among tunneling events, but only when analyzing the charge-transfer statistics in terms of factorial cumulants $C_{{\rm F}, m}(t)$ rather than ordinary ones commonly used in literature. In the absence of correlations, the short-time behavior of the factorial cumulants is given by $C_{{\rm F}, m}(t) \propto (-1)^{m-1}t^m$. A different sign and/or a different power law of the time dependence indicates correl…
We report our study of the real-time charge counting statistics measured by a quantum point contact (QPC) coupled to a single quantum dot (QD) under different back-action strength. By tuning the QD-QPC coupling or QPC bias, we controlled the QPC back-action which drives the QD electrons out of thermal equilibrium. The random telegraph signal (RTS) statistics showed strong and tunable non-thermal-equilibrium saturation effect, which can be quantitatively characterized as a back-action induced tunneling out rate. We found that the QD-QPC coupling and QPC bias voltage played different roles on th…
The time dependent full counting statistics of charge transport through an interacting quantum junction is evaluated from its generating function, controllably computed with the inchworm Monte Carlo method. Exact noninteracting results are reproduced; then, we continue to explore the effect of electron--electron interactions on the time-dependent charge cumulants, first-passage time distributions and $n$-electron transfer distributions. We observe a crossover in the noise from Coulomb blockade- to Kondo-dominated physics as the temperature is decreased. In addition, we uncover long-tailed spin…
Full counting statistics concerns the stochastic transport of electrons in mesoscopic structures. Recently it has been shown that the charge transport statistics for non-interacting electrons in a two-terminal system is always generalized binomial: it can be decomposed into independent single-particle events and the zeros of the generating function are real and negative. Here we investigate how the zeros of the generating function move into the complex plane due to interactions and demonstrate that the positions of the zeros can be detected using high-order factorial cumulants. As an illustrat…
We study the full counting statistics for the transmission of two identical particles with positive or negative symmetry under exchange for the situation where the scattering depends on energy. We find that, besides the expected sensitivity of the noise and higher cumulants, the exchange symmetry has a huge effect on the average transmitted charge; for equal-spin exchange-correlated electrons, the average transmitted charge can be orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding value for independent electrons. A similar, although smaller, effect is found in a four-lead geometry even for ener…
The internal dynamics of a double quantum dot system is renormalized due to coupling respectively with transport electrodes and a dissipative heat bath. Their essential differences are identified unambiguously in the context of full counting statistics. The electrode coupling caused level detuning renormalization gives rise to a fast-to-slow transport mechanism, which is not resolved at all in the average current, but revealed uniquely by pronounced super-Poissonian shot noise and skewness. The heat bath coupling introduces an interdot coupling renormalization, which results in asymmetric Fano…
We develop a scheme for the computation of the full-counting statistics of transport described by Markovian master equations with an arbitrary time dependence. It is based on a hierarchy of generalized density operators, where the trace of each operator yields one cumulant. This direct relation offers a better numerical efficiency than the equivalent number-resolved master equation. The proposed method is particularly useful for conductors with an elaborate time-dependence stemming, e.g., from pulses or combinations of slow and fast parameter switching. As a test bench for the evaluation of th…
We develop a theory for the full counting statistics (FCS) for a class of nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), describable by a Markovian generalized master equation. The theory is applied to two specific examples of current interest: vibrating C60 molecules and quantum shuttles. We report a numerical evaluation of the first three cumulants for the C60-setup; for the quantum shuttle we use the third cumulant to substantiate that the giant enhancement in noise observed at the shuttling transition is due to a slow switching between two competing conduction channels. Especially the last example …
It was recently suggested that a novel type of phase transition may occur in the visibility of electronic Mach-Zehnder Interferometers. Here, we present experimental evidence for the existence of this transition. The transition is induced by strongly non-Gaussian noise that originates from the strong coupling of a quantum point contact to the interferometer. We provide a transparent physical picture of the effect, by exploiting a close analogy to the neutrino-oscillations of particle physics. In addition, our experiment constitutes a probe of the singularity of the elusive full counting statis…
The full counting statistics of the charge transport through an undoped graphene sheet in the presence of smooth disorder is studied. At the Dirac point both in clean and diffusive limits, transport properties of a graphene sample are described by the universal Dorokhov distribution of transmission probabilities. In the crossover regime, deviations from universality occur which can be studied analytically both on ballistic and diffusive sides. In the ballistic regime, we use a diagrammatic technique with matrix Green functions. For a diffusive system, the sigma model is applied. Our results ar…
We consider the theoretical description of real-time counting of electrons tunneling through a Coulomb-blockade quantum dot using a detector with finite bandwidth. By tracing out the quantum dot we find that the dynamics of the detector effectively is non-Markovian. We calculate the cumulant generating function corresponding to the resulting non-Markovian rate equation and find that the measured current cumulants behave significantly differently compared to those of a Markovian transport process. Our findings provide a novel interpretation of noise suppression found in a number of systems.
We derive the full counting statistics of charge transfer through a voltage biased superconducting junction. We find that for measurement times much longer than the inverse Josephson frequency, the counting statistics describes a correlated transfer of quanta of multiple electron charges, each quantum associated with the transfer of a single quasiparticle. An expression for the the counting statistics in terms of the quasiparticle scattering amplitudes is derived.
Full counting statistics is a fundamentally new concept in quantum transport. After a review of basic statistics theory, we introduce the powerful Green's function approach to full counting statistics. To illustrate the concept we consider a number of examples. For generic two-terminal contacts we show how counting statistics elucidates the common (and different) features of transport between normal and superconducting contacts. Finally, we demonstrate how correlations in multi-terminal structures are naturally included in the formalism.
We investigate the zero-frequency shot noise of electronic tunneling through a single quantum dot (SQD) and coherently coupled quantum dots (CQD) taking into account the Coulomb interaction. Within Hartree-Fock approximation, the analytical expressions of current and zero-frequency shot noise are self-consistently derived in the framework of full counting statistics for the both systems. We demonstrate that the correction term of zero-frequency shot noise induced by the intradot Coulomb interaction is almost negligible compared to the noninteracting shot noise in a SQD, while in a CQD the inte…
We investigate the effect of quantum interferences and Coulomb interaction on the counting statistics of electrons crossing a double quantum dot in a parallel geometry using a generating function technique based on a quantum master equation approach. The skewness and the average residence time of electrons in the dots are shown to be the quantities most sensitive to interferences and Coulomb coupling. The joint probabilities of consecutive electron transfer processes show characteristic temporal oscillations due to interference. The steady-state fluctuation theorem which predicts a universal c…
We study the full counting statistics of current of large open systems through the application of random matrix theory to transition-rate matrices. We develop a method for calculating the ensemble-averaged current-cumulant generating functions based on an expansion in terms of the inverse system size. We investigate how different symmetry properties and different counting schemes affect the results.
We study the full counting statistics of heterostructures consisting of normal metal parts connected to a superconducting terminal. Assuming that coherent superconducting correlations are suppressed in the normal metals we show, using Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions, that the system can be mapped onto a purely normal system with twice the number of elements. For a superconducting beam splitter with several normal terminals we obtain general results for the counting statistics.
We consider current shot noise and the full counting statistics in a chain of quantum dots which exhibits a continuous non-equilibrium phase transition as a function of the tunnel couplings of the chain with the electrodes. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we establish that the full counting statistics is conventional away from the phase transition, but becomes, in a well-defined sense, essentially non-Gaussian on the critical line, where the current fluctuations are controlled by the dynamic critical exponent $z$. We find that signatures of the critical full counting s…
We study the full counting statistics of electric current to several drain terminals with spin-dependent entrance conductances. We show that the statistics of charge transfers can be interpreted in terms of single electrons and spin-singlet pairs coming from the source. If the source contains transport channels of high transparency, a significant fraction of electrons comes in spin-singlet pairs.
We derive a stochastic path integral representation of counting statistics in semi-classical systems. The formalism is introduced on the simple case of a single chaotic cavity with two quantum point contacts, and then further generalized to find the propagator for charge distributions with an arbitrary number of counting fields and generalized charges. The counting statistics is given by the saddle point approximation to the path integral, and fluctuations around the saddle point are suppressed in the semi-classical approximation. We use this approach to derive the current cumulants of a chaot…
We develop a self-consistent version of perturbation theory in Liouville space which seeks to combine the advantages of master equation approaches in quantum transport with the nonperturbative features that a self-consistent treatment brings. We describe how counting fields may be included in a self-consistent manner in this formalism such that the full counting statistics can be calculated. NonMarkovian effects are also incorporated. Several different self-consistent approximations are introduced and we discuss their relative strengths with a simple example.
The article develops a powerful theoretical tool to obtain the full counting statistics. By a slight extension of the standard Keldysh method we can access immediately all correlation functions of the current operator. Embedded in a quantum generalization of the circuit theory of electronic transport, we are able to study the full counting statistics of a large class of two-terminal contacts and multi-terminal structures, containing superconductors and normal metals as elements. The practical use of the method is demonstrated in many examples.
We consider full counting statistics of spin in matrix product states. In particular, we study the approach to gaussian distribution for magnetization. We derive the asymptotic corrections to the central limit theorem for magnetization distribution for finite but large blocks in analogy to the Edgeworth series. We also show how central limit theorem like behavior is modified for certain states with topological characteristics such as the AKLT state.
