We propose a derivation of the full counting statistics of electronic current based on a positive-operator-valued measure. Our approach justifies the Levitov-Lesovik formula in the long-time limit, but can be generalized to the detection of finite-frequency noise correlations. The combined action of the projection postulate and the quantum formula for current noise at high frequencies imply an additional white noise. Estimates for this additional noise are in accordance with known experiments. We propose an experimental test of our conjecture by a simultaneous measurement of high- and low-frequency noise.
Full counting statistics is a powerful tool to characterize the noise and correlations in transport through mesoscopic systems. In this work, we propose the theory of conditional spin counting statistics, i.e., the statistical fluctuations of spin-up (down) current given the observation of the spin-down (up) current. In the context of transport through a single quantum dot, it is demonstrated that a strong Coulomb interaction leads to a conditional spin counting statistics that exhibits a substantial change in comparison to that without Coulomb repulsion. It thus can be served as an effective …
The internal dynamics of a double quantum dot system is renormalized due to coupling respectively with transport electrodes and a dissipative heat bath. Their essential differences are identified unambiguously in the context of full counting statistics. The electrode coupling caused level detuning renormalization gives rise to a fast-to-slow transport mechanism, which is not resolved at all in the average current, but revealed uniquely by pronounced super-Poissonian shot noise and skewness. The heat bath coupling introduces an interdot coupling renormalization, which results in asymmetric Fano…
We present a formalism to calculate finite-frequency current correlations in interacting nanoscale conductors. We work within the n-resolved density matrix approach and obtain a multi-time cumulant generating function that provides the fluctuation statistics, solely from the spectral decomposition of the Liouvillian. We apply the method to the frequency-dependent third cumulant of the current through a single resonant level and through a double quantum dot. Our results, which show that deviations from Poissonian behaviour strongly depend on frequency, demonstrate the importance of finite-frequ…
We present time-resolved measurements of electron transport through a quantum dot. The measurements were performed using a nearby quantum point contact as a charge detector. The rates for tunneling through the two barriers connecting the dot to source and drain contacts could be determined individually. In the high bias regime, the method was used to probe excited states of the dot. Furthermore, we have detected bunching of electrons, leading to super-Poissonian noise. We have used the framework of the full counting statistics (FCS) to model the experimental data. The existence of super-Poisso…
We develop a scheme for the computation of the full-counting statistics of transport described by Markovian master equations with an arbitrary time dependence. It is based on a hierarchy of generalized density operators, where the trace of each operator yields one cumulant. This direct relation offers a better numerical efficiency than the equivalent number-resolved master equation. The proposed method is particularly useful for conductors with an elaborate time-dependence stemming, e.g., from pulses or combinations of slow and fast parameter switching. As a test bench for the evaluation of th…
A gate-defined quantum dot in an InAs nanowire is fabricated on top of a quantum point contact realized in a two-dimensional electron gas. The strong coupling between these two quantum devices is used to perform time-averaged as well as time-resolved charge detection experiments for electron flow through the quantum dot. We demonstrate that the Fano factor describing shot noise or time-correlations in single-electron transport depends in the theoretically expected way on the asymmetry of the tunneling barriers even in a regime where the thermal energy $k_\mathrm{B}T$ is comparable to the singl…
Low-temperature transport experiments on a p-type GaAs quantum dot capacitively coupled to a quantum point contact are presented. The time-averaged as well as time-resolved detection of charging events of the dot are demonstrated and they are used to extract the tunnelling rates into and out of the quantum dot. The extracted rates exhibit a super-linear enhancement with the bias applied across the dot which is interpreted in terms of a dense spectrum of excited states contributing to the transport, characteristic for heavy hole systems. The full counting statistics of charge transfer events an…
We are pursuing a capability to perform time resolved manipulations of single spins in quantum dot circuits involving more than two quantum dots. In this paper, we demonstrate full counting statistics as well as averaging techniques we use to calibrate the tunnel barriers. We make use of this to implement the Delft protocol for single shot single spin readout in a device designed to form a triple quantum dot potential. We are able to tune the tunnelling times over around three orders of magnitude. We obtain a spin relaxation time of 300 microseconds at 10T.
We develop a non-Markovian full counting statistics formalism taking into account both the sequential tunneling and cotunneling based on the exact particle number resolved time-convolutionless master equation and the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory. Then, we study the influences of the quantum coherence and the cotunneling assisted sequential tunneling processes on the non-Markovian full counting statistics of electron tunneling through an open quantum system, which consists of a side-coupled double-quantum-dot molecule weakly coupled to two electron reservoirs. We demonstrate that in…
We study the combined counting statistics of two capacitively coupled transport channels. In particular, we examine the conditions necessary for utilizing one channel as detector sensitive to the occupation of the other. A good detector fidelity may be achieved in a bistable regime when the tunneling rates through the two channels are vastly different -- even when the physical back-action of the detector on the probed channel is large. Our methods allow to estimate the error of charge counting detectors from time-resolved current measurements -- which have been obtained in recent experiments -…
We study theoretically the full counting statistics of electron transport through side-coupled double quantum dot (QD) based on an efficient particle-number-resolved master equation. It is demonstrated that the high-order cumulants of transport current are more sensitive to the quantum coherence than the average current, which can be used to probe the quantum coherence of the considered double QD system. Especially, the quantum coherence plays a crucial role in determining whether the super-Poissonian noise occurs in the weak inter-dot hopping coupling regime depending on the corresponding dot…
We present real-time detection measurements of electron tunneling in a graphene quantum dot. By counting single electron charging events on the dot, the tunneling process in a graphene constriction and the role of localized states are studied in detail. In the regime of low charge detector bias we see only a single time-dependent process in the tunneling rate which can be modeled using a Fermi-broadened energy distribution of the carriers in the lead. We find a non-monotonic gate dependence of the tunneling coupling attributed to the formation of localized states in the constriction. Increasin…
We demonstrate time-resolved counting of single atoms extracted from a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb atoms. The atoms are detected with a high-finesse optical cavity and single atom transits are identified. An atom laser beam is formed by continuously output coupling atoms from the Bose-Einstein condensate. We investigate the full counting statistics of this beam and measure its second order correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)$ in a Hanbury Brown and Twiss type experiment. For the monoenergetic atom laser we observe a constant correlation function $g^{(2)}(τ)=1.00\pm0.0…
We study the probability distribution of the number of particle and antiparticle pairs produced via the Schwinger effect when a uniform but time-dependent electric field is applied to noninteracting scalars or spinors initially at a thermodynamic equilibrium. We derive the formula for the characteristic function by employing techniques in mesoscopic physics, reflecting a close analogy between the Schwinger effect and mesoscopic tunneling transports. In particular, we find that the pair production in a medium is enhanced (suppressed) for scalars (spinors) due to the Bose stimulation (Pauli bloc…
We analyze the spin-resolved full counting statistics of electron transfer through an ultrasmall quantum dot coupled to metallic electrodes. Modelling the setup by the Anderson Hamiltonian, we explicitly take into account the onsite Coulomb repulsion $U$. We calculate the cumulant generating function for the probability to transfer a certain number of electrons with a preselected spin orientation during a fixed time interval. With the cumulant generating function at hand we are then able to calculate the spin current correlations which are of outmost importance in the emerging field of spintro…
We calculate the spin current distribution function for a Kondo dot in two different regimes. In the exactly solvable Toulouse limit the linear response, zero temperature statistics of the spin transfer is trinomial, such that all the odd moments vanish and the even moments follow a binomial distribution. On the contrary, the corresponding spin-resolved distribution turns out to be binomial. The combined spin and charge statistics is also determined. In particular, we find that in the case of a finite magnetic field or an asymmetric junction the spin and charge measurements become statisticall…
We extend the generating function technique for calculation of single molecule photon emission statistics [Y. Zheng and F. L. H. Brown, Phys. Rev. Lett., 90,238305 (2003)] to systems governed by multi-level quantum dynamics. This opens up the possibility to study phenomena that are outside the realm of purely stochastic and mixed quantum-stochastic models. In particular, the present methodology allows for calculation of photon statistics that are spectrally resolved and subject to quantum coherence. Several model calculations illustrate the generality of the technique and highlight quantitativ…
