Exact numerical results for the full counting statistics (FCS) of a one-dimensional tight-binding model of noninteracting electrons are presented at finite temperatures using an identity recently presented by Abanov and Ivanov. A similar idea is used to derive a new expression for the cumulant generating function for a system consisting of two quasi-one-dimensional leads connected by a quantum dot in the long time limit. This provides a generalization of the Levitov-Lesovik formula for such systems.
We consider the distribution of waiting times between non-interacting fermions on a tight-binding chain. We calculate the waiting time distribution for a quantum point contact and find a cross-over from Wigner-Dyson statistics at full transmission to Poisson statistics close to pinch-off as predicted by scattering theory. In addition, we consider several quantum dot structures for which we can associate oscillations in the waiting time distributions to internal energy scales of the scatterers. A detailed comparison with scattering theory and generalized master equations is provided. We focus o…
The time dependent full counting statistics of charge transport through an interacting quantum junction is evaluated from its generating function, controllably computed with the inchworm Monte Carlo method. Exact noninteracting results are reproduced; then, we continue to explore the effect of electron--electron interactions on the time-dependent charge cumulants, first-passage time distributions and $n$-electron transfer distributions. We observe a crossover in the noise from Coulomb blockade- to Kondo-dominated physics as the temperature is decreased. In addition, we uncover long-tailed spin…
We investigate the zero-frequency shot noise of electronic tunneling through a single quantum dot (SQD) and coherently coupled quantum dots (CQD) taking into account the Coulomb interaction. Within Hartree-Fock approximation, the analytical expressions of current and zero-frequency shot noise are self-consistently derived in the framework of full counting statistics for the both systems. We demonstrate that the correction term of zero-frequency shot noise induced by the intradot Coulomb interaction is almost negligible compared to the noninteracting shot noise in a SQD, while in a CQD the inte…
We calculate the Rényi entropy of a positive integer order $M$ for a reduced density matrix of a single-level quantum dot connected to left and right leads. We exploit a $2 \times 2$ modified Keldysh Green function matrix obtained by the discrete Fourier transform of a $2 M \times 2M$ multi-contour Keldysh Green function matrix. A moment generating function of self-information is deduced from the analytic continuation of $M$ to the complex plane. We calculate the probability distribution of self-information and find that, within the Hartree approximation, the on-site Coulomb interaction affect…
We study the full counting statistics of interferometers for chiral Majorana fermions with two incoming and two outgoing Dirac fermion channels. In the absence of interactions, the FCS can be obtained from the $4\times4$ scattering matrix $S$ that relates the outgoing Dirac fermions to the incoming Dirac fermions. After presenting explicit expressions for the higher-order current correlations for a modified Hanbury Brown-Twiss interferometer, we note that the cumulant-generating function can be interpreted such that unit-charge transfer processes correspond to two independent half-charge trans…
We study transport properties of a quantum dot coupled to a Majorana zero mode and two normal leads. We investigate the full counting statistics of charge tunneling events which allows one to extract complete information about current fluctuations. Using a Keldysh path-integral approach, we compute the cumulant generating function. We first consider a noninteracting spinless regime, and find that for the symmetric dot-lead couplings, the zero-frequency cumulants exhibit a universal pattern of Euler numbers, independent of the microscopic parameters. For a spinful case, the Coulomb interaction …
We study the probability distribution of the number of particle and antiparticle pairs produced via the Schwinger effect when a uniform but time-dependent electric field is applied to noninteracting scalars or spinors initially at a thermodynamic equilibrium. We derive the formula for the characteristic function by employing techniques in mesoscopic physics, reflecting a close analogy between the Schwinger effect and mesoscopic tunneling transports. In particular, we find that the pair production in a medium is enhanced (suppressed) for scalars (spinors) due to the Bose stimulation (Pauli bloc…
We consider the entanglement entropy for a line segment in the system of noninteracting one-dimensional fermions at zero temperature. In the limit of a large segment length L, the leading asymptotic behavior of this entropy is known to be logarithmic in L. We study finite-size corrections to this asymptotic behavior. Based on an earlier conjecture of the asymptotic expansion for full counting statistics in the same system, we derive a full asymptotic expansion for the von Neumann entropy and obtain first several corrections for the Renyi entropies. Our corrections for the Renyi entropies repro…
We study the trace of the exponentials of general fermion bi-linears, including pairing terms, and including non Hermitian forms. In particular, we give elementary derivations for determinant and pfaffian formulae for such traces, and use these to obtain general expressions for the full counting statistics in states associated with quadratic Hamiltonians including BCS-like pairing terms and fermion parity in a prescribed region or set of modes. We also derive pfaffian expressions for state overlaps and counting statistics in states built out of the vacuum by creation of pairs of particles.
We calculate the full counting statistics (FCS) of a subsystem energy in free fermionic systems by means of the Grassmann variables. We demonstrate that the generating function of these systems can be written as a determinant formula with respect to the Hamiltonian couplings and by employing the Bell's polynomials, we derive exact formulas for the subsystem energy moments. In addition, we discuss the same quantities in the quantum XY spin chain, and we demonstrate that at the critical regimes the fluctuations of the energy moments decay like a power-law as we expect from the conformal field th…
Exact diagonalization studies have revealed that the energy spectrum of interacting electrons in the lowest Landau level splits, non-perturbatively, into bands, which is responsible for the fascinating phenomenology of this system. The theory of nearly free composite fermions has been shown to be valid for the lowest band, and thus to capture the low temperature physics, but it over-predicts the number of states for the excited bands. We explain the state counting of higher bands in terms of composite fermions with an infinitely strong short range interaction between an excited composite-fermi…
We revisit the problem of full counting statistics of particles on a segment of a one-dimensional gas of free fermions. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we study the crossover between the counting of discrete particles and of the continuous particle density as a function of smoothing in the counting procedure. In the discrete-particle limit, the result is given by the Fisher--Hartwig expansion for Toeplitz determinants, while in the continuous limit we recover the bosonization results. This example of full counting statistics with smoothing is also related to orthogonal…
We demonstrate that it is possible to use atomic manipulation techniques to adiabatically tune between one-dimensional and two-dimensional topological superconductors in magnet--superconductor hybrid (MSH) structures. This allows one to change the nature of the associated Majorana fermions between localized bound states and chiral Majorana edge modes, and provides a new approach for counting the topological invariant of the system -- the Chern number -- in real space. Moreover, we show that the topological nature of finite-size MSH structures can be characterized using the Chern number density…
We develop a method of calculating the full-counting statistics for a non-interacting fermionic system coupled to the memory-less reservoirs. The evolution of the system is described by the Lindblad equation. By the basis change the Liouvillian operator is brought to the quadratic form. This allows us a straightforward calculation of any observable in the non-equilibrium steady state. We introduce the counting field in the Lindblad equation which brings us to the generating function and helps us to obtain all cumulants of the charge transport. For the two-site system we give the expression for…

We present a numerical method to compute the Landauer conductance of noninteracting two-dimensional massless Dirac fermions in disordered systems. The method allows for the introduction of boundary conditions at the ribbon edges and accounts for an external magnetic field. By construction, the proposed discretization scheme avoids the fermion doubling problem. The method does not rely on an atomistic basis and is particularly useful to deal with long-range disorder, the correlation length of which largely exceeds the underlying material crystal lattice spacing. As an application, we study the …
The Full Counting Statistics (FCS) is studied for a one-dimensional system of non-interacting fermions with and without disorder. For two unbiased $L$ site lattices connected at time $t=0$, the charge variance increases as the natural logarithm of $t$, following the universal expression $<δN^2> \approx \frac{1}{π^2}\log{t}$. Since the static charge variance for a length $l$ region is given by $<δN^2> \approx \frac{1}{π^2}\log{l}$, this result reflects the underlying relativistic or conformal invariance and dynamical exponent $z=1$ of the disorder-free lattice. With disorder and strongly locali…
We study the fate of double-Weyl fermions in three-dimensional systems in the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions. By employing the momentum-shell renormalization group approach, we find that the fixed point of noninteracting double-Weyl fermions is unstable against Coulomb interactions and flows to a nontrivial stable fixed point with anisotropic screening effect. Moreover, experimentally measurable quantities such as specific heat obtain unusual logarithmic corrections. We also discuss implications of our results to three-dimensional materials HgCr2Se4 and SrSi2, candidate materials …
We consider an integrable system of two one-dimensional fermionic chains connected by a link. The hopping constant at the link can be different from that in the bulk. Starting from an initial state in which the left chain is populated while the right is empty, we present time-dependent full counting statistics and the Loschmidt echo in terms of Fredholm determinants. Using this exact representation, we compute the above quantities as well as the current through the link, the shot noise and the entanglement entropy in the large time limit. We find that the physics is strongly affected by the va…

We study the computational complexity of quantum-mechanical expectation values of single-particle operators in bosonic and fermionic multi-particle product states. Such expectation values appear, in particular, in full-counting-statistics problems. Depending on the initial multi-particle product state, the expectation values may be either easy to compute (the required number of operations scales polynomially with the particle number) or hard to compute (at least as hard as a permanent of a matrix). However, if we only consider full counting statistics in a finite number of final single-particl…
