Exciton levels and fine-structure splitting in laterally-coupled quantum dot molecules are studied. The electron and hole tunneling energies as well as the direct Coulomb interaction are essential for the exciton levels. It is found that fine-structure splitting of the two-lowest exciton levels is contributed from the intra- and inter-dot exchange interactions, both of which are largely influenced by the symmetry and tunnel-coupling between the two dots. As the inter-dot separation is reduced, fine-structure splitting of the exciton ground state is largely increased while those of the excited states are decreased. Moreover, the dependence of the fine-structure splitting in quantum dot molecules on the Coulomb correlation is clearly clarified.
We develop a theory of interlayer tunneling in the exciton condensate of bilayer quantum Hall systems, which predicts strongly enhanced, but finite, tunneling conductance peaks near zero bias even at zero temperature. It is emphasized that, though this strongly enhanced tunneling originates from spontaneous interlayer phase coherence, it is fundamentally not the Josephson effect. Because of strong interlayer correlation, the bilayer system behaves as a single system so that conventional tunneling theories treating two layers as independent systems are not applicable. Based on our theory, we co…
By pumping nonresonantly a MoS$_2$ monolayer at $13$ K under a circularly polarized cw laser, we observe exciton energy redshifts that break the degeneracy between B excitons with opposite spin. The energy splitting increases monotonically with the laser power reaching as much as $18$ meV, while it diminishes with the temperature. The phenomenon can be explained theoretically by considering simultaneously the bandgap renormalization which gives rise to the redshift and exciton-exciton Coulomb exchange interaction which is responsible for the spin-dependent splitting. Our results offer a simple…
The ground-state energy and fine-structure splitting of ionized shallow donor impurity-exciton complex in quantum dots are investigated. It is found that fine-structure splitting could be largely reduced by the off-center ionized impurities since the anisotropic shape of exciton envelope function is significantly changed. Anomalous Stark shifts of the ground-state energy and efficient tuning of the fine-structure splitting by the external electric field due to the local electric field produced by the ionized impurities are discussed. The scheme may be useful for the design of the quantum dots-…
We report on single InGaAs quantum dots embedded in a lateral electric field device. By applying a voltage we tune the neutral exciton transition into resonance with the biexciton using the quantum confined Stark effect. The results are compared to theoretical calculations of the relative energies of exciton and biexciton. Cascaded decay from the manifold of single exciton-biexciton states has been predicted to be a new concept to generate entangled photon pairs on demand without the need to suppress the fine structures splitting of the neutral exciton.
Formation of excitonic states in quantum dots of nitride based III-V semiconductors GaN and AlN including coulomb and exchange interactions are investigated. Dark exciton formation is found to occur for both GaN quantum dots(QDs) with wurtzite structure having positive crystal field splitting and GaN and AlN QDs with zero crystal field splitting with a transition from dark to bright exciton at about 40Å. In wurtzite AlN QDs with negative crystal field splitting the splitting between the dark and bright excitonic states is very small and vanishes at about 15Å.
Magnetoluminescence of spatially indirect dipolar excitons collected in 25 nm GaAs/AlGaAs single quantum well within a lateral potential trap has been studied in perpendicular magnetic field in Faraday geometry. The paramagnetic spin splitting of the luminescence line of the heavy-hole excitons in the trap centre is completely compensated at magnetic fields below critical value, around 2 Tesla. The effect of spin-splitting compensation is caused by the exchange interaction in dense exciton Bose gas which is in qualitative agreement with the existing theoretical concepts. In the range of low ma…
We report on the experimental investigation of the polarization-dependent energy splitting in the lower exciton-polariton branches of a 1D microcavity. The splitting observed for the lowest branch can reach up to 1 meV. It does not result from low temperature thermal constraints but from anisotropic mechanical internal strains induced by etching. Those strains remove the degeneracy both in the photonic ($δE_{\mathrm{ph}}$) and excitonic ($δE_{\mathrm{exc}}$) components of the polariton but also in the photon-exciton coupling ($δΩ$). Those three contributions are accurately infered from experim…
Excitonic fine structure splitting in quantum dots is closely related to the lateral shape of the wave functions. We have studied theoretically the fine structure splitting in InAs quantum dots with a type-II confinement imposed by a GaAsSb capping layer. We show that very small values of the fine structure splitting comparable with the natural linewidth of the excitonic transitions are achievable for realistic quantum dot morphologies despite the structural elongation and the piezoelectric field. For example, varying the capping layer thickness allows for a fine tuning of the splitting energy…
Exciton fine structure splitting in semiconductors reflects the underlying symmetry of the crystal and quantum confinement. Since the latter factor strongly enhances the exchange interaction, most work has focused on nanostructures. Here, we report on the first observation of the bright exciton fine structure splitting in a bulk semiconductor crystal, where the impact of quantum confinement can be specifically excluded, giving access to the intrinsic properties of the material. Detailed investigation of the exciton photoluminescence and reflection spectra of a bulk methylammonium lead tribromi…
We report on the magnetic field dispersion of the exciton spin-splitting and diamagnetic shift in single InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) and dot molecules (QDMs) up to $B$ = 28 T. Only for systems with strong geometric confinement, the dispersions can be well described by simple field dependencies, while for dots with weaker confinement considerable deviations are observed: most importantly, in the high field limit the spin-splitting shows a non-linear dependence on $B$, clearly indicating light hole admixtures to the valence band ground state.
The polarization splitting of the exciton ground state in two laterally coupled quantum dots under an in-plane electric field is investigated and its effective tuning is designed. It is found that there are significant Stark effect and anticrossing in energy levels. Due to coupling between inter- and intra-dot states, the absolute value of polarization splitting is significantly reduced, and it could be tuned to zero by the electric field for proper inter-dot separations. Our scheme is interesting for the research on the quantum dots-based entangled-photon source.
Monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) with unique spin-valley contrasting properties and remarkably strong excitonic effects continue to be a subject of intense research interests. These model 2D semiconductors feature two fundamental intravalley excitons species - optically accessible ' bright' excitons with anti-parallel spins and optically inactive 'dark' excitons with parallel spins. For applications exploiting radiative recombination of bright excitons or long lifetime dark excitons, it is essential to understand the radiative character of the exciton groun…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) heterostructure with a type II alignment hosts unique interlayer excitons with the possibility of spin-triplet and spin-singlet states. However, the associated spectroscopy signatures remain elusive, strongly hindering the understanding of the Moire potential modulation of the interlayer exciton. In this work, we unambiguously identify the spin-singlet and spin-triplet interlayer excitons in the WSe2/MoSe2 hetero-bilayer with a 60-degree twist angle through the gate- and magnetic field-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy. Both the singlet and tripl…
Strongly bound excitons and many-body interactions between them determine light-matter interactions in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of 2D semiconductors. Unlike fundamental particles, quasiparticles in condensed matter, such as excitons, can be tailored to alter their interactions and realize emergent quantum phases. Here, using a WS$_2$/WSe$_2$/WS$_2$ heterotrilayer, we create a quantum superposition of oppositely oriented dipolar excitons - a quadrupolar exciton - wherein an electron is layer-hybridized in WS$_2$ layers while the hole localizes in WSe$_2$. In contrast to dipolar exci…
Anisotropic exchange-splitting in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) results in bright-exciton fine-structure-splitting (FSS) important for quantum information processing. Direct measurement of FSS usually requires single/few QDs at liquid-helium temperatures, because of its sensitivity to QD size and shape, whereas measuring and controlling FSS at an ensemble-level seem to be impossible unless all the dots are made to be nearly the same. Here we report strong bright-exciton FSS up to 1.6 meV in solution-processed CsPbI3 perovskite QDs, manifested as quantum beats in ensemble-level transient abs…
Raman spectra of few-layer MoSe2 were measured with 8 excitation energies. New peaks that appear only near resonance with various exciton states are analyzed, and the modes are assigned. The resonance profiles of the Raman peaks reflect the joint density of states for optical transitions, but the symmetry of the exciton wave functions leads to selective enhancement of the A1g mode at the A exciton energy and the shear mode at the C exciton energy. We also find Davydov splitting of intra-layer A1g, E1g, and A2u modes due to inter-layer interaction for some excitation energies near resonances. F…
Doping a semiconductor quantum dot with just a single impurity atom can completely transform its physical properties. Here, we report and analyze the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of colloidal CdSe quantum dot samples containing on average fewer than one Mn2+ per quantum dot. Even at this sub-single-dopant level, the low-temperature low-field data are dominated by impurity-induced Zeeman splittings caused by dopant-carrier sp-d exchange. Unlike in more heavily doped quantum dots, however, the MCD intensity at the first CdSe exciton shows a field-induced sign flip as the field stren…
We demonstrate that the exciton and biexciton emission energies as well as exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) in single (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) can be efficiently tuned using hydrostatic pressure in situ in an optical cryostat at up to 4.4 GPa. The maximum exciton emission energy shift was up to 380 meV, and the FSS was up to 180 $μ$eV. We successfully produced a biexciton antibinding-binding transition in QDs, which is the key experimental condition that generates color- and polarization-indistinguishable photon pairs from the cascade of biexciton emissions and that generates en…
Non-linear Zeeman splitting of neutral excitons is observed in composition engineered In(x)Ga(1-x)As self-assembled quantum dots and its microscopic origin is explained. Eight-band k.p simulations, performed using realistic dot parameters extracted from cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy, reveal that a quadratic contribution to the Zeeman energy originates from a spin dependent mixing of heavy and light hole orbital states in the dot. The dilute In-composition (x<0.35) and large lateral size (40-50 nm) of the quantum dots investigated is shown to strongly enhance the non-linear exci…
We show that the condensation of exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities in an applied magnetic field manifests itself in the quenching of the Zeeman splitting of an elliptically polarized condensate. The circular polarization degree of a localized condensate with a finite number of particles increases as a function of the magnetic field with a step-like behavior. The width of each polarization step is fixed by the polariton-polariton interaction constants and the number of steps is fixed by the number of polaritons in the condensate. The magnetic susceptibility of the condensate dep…
Strong Coulomb correlations together with multi-valley electronic bands in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and possible new optoelectronic applications are at the heart of studies of the rich physics of excitons in semiconductor structures made of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). In intrinsic TMD monolayers the basic, intravalley excitons are formed by a hole from the top of the valence band and an electron either from the lower or upper spin-orbit-split conduction band subbands: one of these excitons is optically active, the second one is "dark", although possibly …
Exciton luminescence of a CdSe quantum dot (QD) inserted in a ZnSe nanowire is strongly influenced by the dark exciton states. Because of the small size of these QDs (2-5nm), exchange interaction between hole and electron is highly enhanced and we measured large energy splitting between bright and dark exciton states ($ΔE\in [4, 9.2 ]$ meV) and large spin flip rates between these states. Statistics on many QDs showed that this splitting depends on the QD size. Moreover, we measured an increase of the spin flip rate to the dark states with increasing energy splitting. We explain this observatio…
Effect of spin-dependent tunneling and intervalley scattering in magnetic-semiconductor van der Waals heterostructures on exciton and trion polarization
Understanding and controlling the interaction between the excitonic states of a quantum emitter and the plasmonic modes of a nanocavity is one of the most relevant current scientific challenges, key for the development of many applications, from quantum information processing devices to polaritonic catalysts. In this paper we demonstrate that the tunnel electroluminescence of C60 nanocrystals enclosed in the plasmonic nanocavity between a metallic surface and the tip of a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope, and isolated from the metal surface by a thin NaCl film, can be switched from a broad emiss…
The quantum Hall state at total filling factor $ν_T=1$ in bilayer systems realizes an exciton condensate and exhibits a zero-bias tunneling anomaly, similar to the Josephson effect in the presence of fluctuations. In contrast to conventional Josephson junctions, no Fraunhofer diffraction pattern has been observed, due to disorder induced topological defects, so-called merons. We consider interlayer tunneling in the presence of microwave radiation, and find Shapiro steps in the tunneling current-voltage characteristic despite the presence of merons. Moreover, the Josephson oscillations can also…
The presence of polarization splitting of exciton-polariton branches in planar semiconductor microcavities has a pronounced effect on vortices in polariton condensates. We show that the TE-TM splitting leads to the coupling between the left and right half-vortices (vortices in the right and left circular components of the condensate), that otherwise do not interact. We analyze also the effect of linear polarization pinning resulted from a fixed splitting between two perpendicular linear polarizations. In this case, half-vortices acquire strings (solitons) attached to them. The half-vortices wi…
Zeeman splitting of quantum-confined states of excitons in InGaAs quantum wells (QWs) is experimentally found to depend strongly on quantization energy. Moreover, it changes sign when the quantization energy increases with a decrease in the QW width. In the 87-nm QW, the sign change is observed for the excited quantum-confined states, which are above the ground state only by a few meV. A two-step approach for the numerical solution of the two-particle Schroedinger equation, taking into account the Coulomb interaction and valence-band coupling, is used for a theoretical justification of the obs…
We demonstrate the optical orientation and alignment of excitons in a two-dimensional layer of CsPbI$_3$ perovskite nanocrystals prepared by colloidal synthesis and measure the anisotropic exchange splitting of exciton levels in the nanocrystals. From the experimental data at low temperature (2K), we obtain the average value of anisotropic splitting of bright exciton states of the order of 120μeV. Our calculations demonstrate that there is a significant contribution to the splitting due to the nanocrystal shape anisotropy for all inorganic perovskite nanocrystrals.
The Ajiki-Ando (A-A) splitting of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNT) originating from the Aharanov-Bohm effect was observed in chiral specific SWNTs by the magneto-absorption measurements conducted at magnetic fields of up to 78 T. The absorption spectra from each chirality showed clear A-A splitting of the $E_{11}$ optical excitonic transitions. The parameters of both the dark-bright exciton energy splitting and the rate of A-A splitting in a magnetic field were determined for the first time from the well-resolved absorption spectra.
We have investigated the tunneling properties of an electron double quantum well system where the lowest Landau level of each quantum well is half filled. This system is expected to be a Bose condensate of excitons. Our four-terminal dc measurements reveal a nearly vanishing interlayer voltage and the existence of critical tunneling currents which depend on the strength of the condensate state.
The Forster resonant energy transfer mechanism (FRET) is investigated in optically driven and electrically gated tunnel coupled quantum dot molecules. Two novel FRET induced optical signatures are found in the dressed excitonic spectrum. This is constructed from exciton level occupation as function of pump laser energy and applied bias, resembling a level anticrossing spectroscopy measurement. We observe a redistribution of spectral weight and splitting of the exciton spectral lines. FRET among single excitons induces a splitting in the spatially-direct exciton lines, away from the anticrossin…
Excitons in alloyed nanowire quantum dots have unique spectra as shown here using atomistic calculations. The bright exciton splitting is triggered solely by alloying and despite cylindrical quantum dot shape reaches over $15~μ$eV, contrary to previous theoretical predictions, however, in line with experimental data. This splitting can however be tuned by electric field to go below $1$~$μ$eV threshold. The dark exciton optical activity is also strongly affected by alloying reaching notable $1/3500$ fraction of the bright exciton and having large out-of-plane polarized component.
We propose to measure Purcell effect by observing the current through a semeiconductor quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. An electron and a hole are injected separately into the quantum structure to form an exciton and then recombine radiatively. The stationary current is shown to be altered if one varies the cavity length or the exciton energy gap. Therefore, the Purcell effect can be observed experimentally by measuring the current through the quantum structure. In addition, we also find superradiance of excitons between quantum dots may also be observed in an electrical way.
We propose an effective model to describe the statistical properties of exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) and polarization angle of quantum dot ensembles (QDEs). We derive the distributions of FSS and polarization angle for QDEs and show that their statistical features can be fully characterized using at most three independent measurable parameters. The effective model is confirmed using atomistic pseudopotential calculations as well as experimental measurements for several rather different QDEs. The model naturally addresses three fundamental questions that are frequently encountered in …
Few-layer tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is investigated using circularly polarized Raman spectroscopy with up to eight excitation energies. The main E2g1 and A1g modes near 250 cm-1 appear as a single peak in the Raman spectrum taken without consideration of polarization but are resolved by using circularly polarized Raman scattering. The resonance behaviors of the E2g1 and A1g modes are examined. Firstly, both the E2g1 and A1g modes are enhanced near resonances with the exciton states. The A1g mode exhibits Davydov splitting for trilayers or thicker near some of the exciton resonances. The low-f…
We use atomistic tight-binding theory with a configuration interaction description of Coulomb and exchange effects to describe excitons in symmetric quantum dots in a vertical electric field. We show that field-induced manipulation of exciton orientation and phase produces a drastic reduction of fine structure splitting, an anticrossing, and a 90 degree rotation of polarization, similar to experiment. An atomistic analysis is needed to explain how exciton reorientation modifies anisotropic exchange and fine structure splitting without significantly altering other splittings.
The dependence of the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on the tilt angle of an applied magnetic field is studied. Starting from a four-band Hamiltonian we construct a theory which quantitatively reproduces the available experimental PL spectra for perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. In the presence of a tilted magnetic field, we demonstrate that the dark exciton PL peaks brighten due to the in-plane component of the magnetic field and split for light with different circular polarization as a consequence of the perpendicular …
We study spin tunneling in a magnetic nanoparticle with biaxial anisotropy that is free to rotate about its anisotropy axis. Exact instanton of the coupled equations of motion is found that connects degenerate classical energy minima. We show that mechanical freedom of the particle renormalizes magnetic anisotropy and increases the tunnel splitting.
Weak near-infrared and strong terahertz excitation are applied to study excitonic Rabi splitting in (GaIn)As/GaAs quantum wells. Pronounced anticrossing behavior of the split peaks is observed for different terahertz intensities and detunings relative to the intraexcitonic heavy-hole 1s-2p-transition. At intermediate to high electric fields the splitting becomes highly asymmetric and exhibits significant broadening. A fully microscopic theory is needed to explain the experimental results. Comparisons with a two-level model reveal the increasing importance of higher excitonic states at elevated…
An anomalous magneto-optical spectrum is discovered for dipolar valley excitons in twisted double layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), where in-plane magnetic field induces a sizable multiplet splitting of exciton states inside the light cone. Chiral dispersions of the split branches make possible efficient optical injection of unidirectional exciton current. We also find an analog effect with a modest heterostrain replacing the magnetic field for introducing large splitting and chiral dispersions in the light cone. Angular orientation of photo-injected exciton flow can be controlled …
By using bosonization method and unitary transformation, we give a general relation between the dimensionless tunneling conductance and the fractional Coulomb blockade conductance peak splitting which is valid both for weak and strong transmission between two quantum dots, and show that the tunneling conductance has a linear temperature dependence in the low energy and low temperature limit.
The optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers such as the two-dimensional semiconductors MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ are dominated by excitons, Coulomb bound electron-hole pairs. The light emission yield depends on whether the electron-hole transitions are optically allowed (bright) or forbidden (dark). By solving the Bethe Salpeter Equation on top of $GW$ wave functions in density functional theory calculations, we determine the sign and amplitude of the splitting between bright and dark exciton states. We evaluate the influence of the spin-orbit coupling on the optical spectra…
The level splittings in a dimer with the antiferromagnetic coupling between two single-molecule magnets are calculated perturbatively for arbitrary spin. It is found that the exchange interaction between two single-molecule magnets plays an important role in the level splitting. The results are discussed in comparison with the recent experiment.
The equal-interval splitting of quantum tunneling observed in simple-Ising-model systems of Ni$_{4}$ (3D) and Mn$_3$ (2D) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is reported. The splitting is due to the identical exchange coupling in the SMMs, and is simply determined by the difference between the two numbers of the spin-down $n_{\downarrow}$ and spin-up $n_{\uparrow}$ molecules neighboring to the tunneling molecule. The splitting may be presented as $(n_{\downarrow}-n_{\uparrow})JS/{gμ_{0}μ_{B}}$, and the number of the splittings follows $n+1$ where $n=n_{\downarrow}+n_{\uparrow}$ is the coordination …
Charge carriers in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as WSe$_2$, have their spin and valley-pseudospin locked into an optically-addressable index that is proposed as a basis for future information processing. The manipulation of this spin-valley index requires tuning its energy, typically through external magnetic field (B), which is cumbersome. Thus, other efficient routes like all-optical control of spin-valley index are desirable. Here, we show that many-body interactions amongst interlayer excitons in WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ heterobilayer induce a steady-state valley Z…
A planar quantum-well device made of a gapless graphene nanoribbon with edges in contact with gapped graphene sheets is examined. The size-quantization spectrum of charge carriers in an asymmetric quantum well is shown to exhibit a pseudospin splitting. Interface states of a new type arise from the crossing of dispersion curves of gapless and gapped graphene materials. The exciton spectrum is calculated for a planar graphene quantum well. The effect of an external electric field on the exciton spectrum is analyzed.
The photoluminescence spectrum of a single quantum dot was recorded as a secondary resonant laser optically dressed either the vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions. High-resolution polarization-resolved measurements using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer reveal splittings of the linearly-polarized fine-structure states that are non-degenerate in an asymmetric quantum dot. These splittings manifest as either triplets or doublets and depend sensitively on laser intensity and detuning. Our approach realizes complete resonant control of a multi-excitonic system in emissio…
We investigate the energy spectrum of the biaxial spin systems with magnetic field along the hard anisotropy axis by using the complex periodic orbit theory. All important features of the system appearing in whole energy range, such as oscillations of level splittings due to Wess-Zumino effect and their absence at higher magnetic field etc., can be completely understood within this semiclassical scheme. We find out that the fields at which the tunnelling quenches do not shift at higher energy levels and the absences of the quenching at higher magnetic field have their origin in an exact coinci…
We report on molecular beam epitaxy growth of symmetric InAs/InP quantum dots (QDs) emitting at telecom C-band (1.55 $μ$m) with ultra-small excitonic fine-structure splitting of ~2 $μ$eV. The QDs are grown on distributed Bragg reflector and systematically characterized by micro-photoluminescence ($μ$-PL) measurements. One order of magnitude of QD PL intensity enhancement is observed in comparison with as-grown samples. Combination of power-dependent and polarization-resolved measurements reveal background-free exciton, biexciton and dark exciton emission with resolution-limited linewidth below…
We have investigated analytically quantum tunneling of large spin in the biaxial spin system with the magnetic field applied along the hard and medium anisotropy axes by using a purely quantum-mechanical approach. When the magnetic field parallels the hard axis, the tunnel splittings of all the energy level pairs are oscillatory as a function of the magnetic field. The quenching points are completely determined by the coexistence of solutions of the Ince's equation. When the magnetic field points the medium axis, the tunnel splitting oscillations disappear due to no coexistence of solutions. T…
We investigate the optical response of quantum dot molecules coherently driven by polarized laser light. Our description includes the splitting in excitonic levels caused by isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions. We consider interdot transitions mediated by hole tunneling between states with the same total angular momentum and between bright and dark exciton states, as allowed by spin-flip hopping between the dots in the molecule. Using realistic experimental parameters we demonstrate that the excitonic states coupled by tunneling exhibit a rich and controllable optical response. We …
We study the band-edge exciton fine structure and in particular its bright-dark splitting in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals by four different optical methods based on fluorescence line narrowing and time-resolved measurements at various temperatures down to 2 K. We demonstrate that all these methods provide consistent splitting values and discuss their advances and limitations. Colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets with thicknesses of 3, 4 and 5 monolayers are chosen for experimental demonstrations. The bright-dark splitting of excitons varies from 3.2 to 6.0 meV and is inversely proportional to …
A simple model, describing the dynamics of the non-equilibrium pseudospin of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons, has been formulated. It explains the suppression of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium polariton condensate in an external magnetic field, the optical alignment, and the conversion of alignment into orientation of polaritons. It has been shown that inverse effects are possible, to wit, the spontaneous circular polarization and the enhancement of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium condensate of polaritons in the absence of external field.
Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been attracting great attention because of its strong excitonic effects. Taking into account few-layer systems, we investigate theoretically the effects of the number of layers on quasiparticle energies, absorption spectra, and excitonic states, placing particular focus on the Davydov splitting of the lowest bound excitons. We describe how the inter-layer interaction as well as the variation in electronic screening as a function of layer number $N$ affects the electronic and optical properties. Using both \textit{ab initio} simulations and a tight-binding mode…
We consider theoretically a system of exciton-polariton micropillars arranged in a honeycomb lattice. The naturally present TE-TM splitting and an alternating Zeeman splitting, where the different sublattices experience opposite Zeeman splitting, shifts the Dirac points in energy, giving rise to antichiral behavior. In a strip geometry having zigzag edges, two pairs of edge states exist and propagate in the same direction (including the states at the opposite edges). The edge modes localized at the opposite edges have opposite spins (circular polarizations), which leads to co-propagating "+-" …
We report on the selective excitation of single impurity-bound exciton states in a GaAs double quantum well (DQW). The structure consists of two quantum wells (QWs) coupled by a thin tunnel barrier. The DQW is subject to a transverse electric field to create spatially indirect inter-QW excitons with electrons and holes located in different QWs. We show that the presence of intra-QW charged excitons (trions) blocks carrier tunneling across the barrier to form indirect excitons, thus opening a gap in their emission spectrum. This behavior is attributed to the low binding energy of the trions. Wi…
We theoretically study the effects of bias-controlled interdot tunneling in vertically coupled quantum dots on the emission properties of spin excitons in various bias-controlled tunneling regimes. As a main result, for strongly coupled dots we predict substantial reduction of optical fine structure splitting without any drop in the optical oscillator strength. This special reduction diminishes the distinguibility of polarized decay paths in cascade emission processes suggesting the use of stacked quantum dot molecules as entangled photon-pair sources.
A Landau-Zener multi-crossing method has been used to investigate the tunnel splittings in high quality Mn$_{12}$-acetate single crystals in the pure quantum relaxation regime and for fields applied parallel to the magnetic easy axis. With this method several individual tunneling resonances have been studied over a broad range of time scales. The relaxation is found to be non-exponential and a distribution of tunnel splittings is inferred from the data. The distributions suggest that the inhomogeneity in the tunneling rates is due to disorder that produces a non-zero mean value of the average …
The point contact tunneling conductance between edges of the spin singlet $ν=2/3,\hat{K}=(3/3/0)$ quantum Hall states is studied both in the quasiparticle tunneling picture and in the electron tunneling picture. Due to the interplay of Zeeman splitting and the long range Coulomb interaction between edges of opposite chirality novel spin excitations emerge, and their effect is characterized by anomalous exponents of the charge and spin tunneling conductances in various temperature ranges. Depending on the kinds of scatterings at the point contact and the tunneling mechanism the anomalous intera…
