We study the phase diagram of a quasi-two dimensional magnetic system ${\rm Rb_2MnF_4}$ with Monte Carlo simulations of a classical Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian which includes the dipolar interactions between ${\rm Mn}^{2+}$ spins. Our simulations reveal an Ising-like antiferromagnetic phase at low magnetic fields and an XY phase at high magnetic fields. The boundary between Ising and XY phases is analyzed with a recently proposed finite size scaling technique and found to be consistent with a bicritical point at T=0. We discuss the computational techniques used to handle the weak dipolar interaction and the difference between our phase diagram and the experimental results.
The static critical behavior of the models of small magnetic particles of the real two sublattice antiferromagnet MnF2 is investigated by the Monte Carlo method taking into account the interaction of the second nearest neighbors. Systems with open boundaries are considered to estimate the influence of the sizes of particles on the pattern of their critical behavior. The behavior of thermodynamic functions in the phase transition region is investigated. The data on the maxima of the temperature dependences of heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility are shown to be insufficient to unambiguousl…
We report on the properties of a dipolar, antiferromagnetic chain in the framework of linear spin-wave theory. The phase diagram is calculated for an arbitrary ratio of dipolar interaction to exchange interaction and for fields both parallel and perpendicular to the chain direction. The calculated magnetization is compared with experimental measurements for RbMnBr_3, a quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnet.
We investigate antiferromagnetic spin chains, which are coupled by a weak antiferromagnetic exchange interaction on a hexagonal lattice. We particulary study the role of the dipole-dipole interaction within the framework of a Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor exchange and additional dipolar interaction. We find several commensurate and incommensurate phases depending on the ratio of dipolar energy to interchain-exchange energy due to their competing qualtity. The ground-state analysis is supplemented by a stability analysis by means of a linear spin-wave theory. In comparison with experim…
We study systems of classical magnetic dipoles on simple cubic lattices with dipolar and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. By analysis and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we find how the antiferromagnetic phases vary with uniaxial and fourfold anisotropy constants, C and D, as well as with exchange strength J. We pay special attention to the spin reorientation (SR) phase, and exhibit in detail the nature of its broken symmetries. By mean field theory and by MC, we also obtain the ratio of the higher ordering temperature to the SR transition temperature, and show that it depends mainly on …
We derive the equilibrium phase diagram of the classical dipolar Ising antiferromagnet at the mean-field level on a geometry that mimics the two dimensional Kagome lattice. Our mean-field treatment is based on the combination of the cluster variational Bethe-Peierls formalism and the cavity method, developed in the context of the glass transition, and is complementary to the Monte Carlo simulations realized in [Phys. Rev. B 98, 144439 (2018)]. Our results confirm the nature of the low temperature crystalline phase which is reached through a weakly first-order phase transition. Moreover, they a…
We study the effect of quenched disorder in square artificial spin ice by means of numerical simulations. We introduce disorder in the length of magnetic islands using two kinds of distributions: Gaussian and uniform. As the system behavior depends on its geometrical parameters, we focus on studying it in the proximity of the ice regime which is quite difficult to thermalize both in experiments and simulations. We show how length disorder affect the antiferromagnetic and (locally) ferromagnetic ordering, by inducing the system, in the case of weak disorder, to intermediate or mix states. Moreo…
Ever since the experiments which founded the field of highly frustrated magnetism, the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet has been the archetypical setting for the study of fluctuation induced exotic ordering. To this day the nature of its classical low-temperature state has remained a mystery: the non-linear nature of the fluctuations around the exponentially numerous harmonically degenerate ground states has not permitted a controlled theory, while its complex energy landscape has precluded numerical simulations at low temperature. Here we present an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm which remo…
A model for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice with exchange and dipole-dipole interactions is studied via mean-field theory. In treating the dipoles by use of the Ewald method, a soft (critical) mode with a unique ordering wave vector is selected for all strengths of the dipole-dipole coupling. For weak dipoles a partially ordered, three sublattice spin structure (P state), with q_{ord}= (1/2 1/2 1/2), is selected. A fully ordered, four sublattice spin structure (F state), with q = (000), competes with the P state and becomes the stable structure as the temperature is reduce…
We study Ising pyrochlores by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We cover a set of exchange constants ranging from the frustrated ferromagnetic case (spin-ice) to the fully-ordered "all-in--all-out" antiferromagnet in the dipolar model, reinterpreting the results --as in an ionic system-- in terms of a temperature vs. magnetic charge density phase diagram. In spite of its spin nature and the presence of both double and single non-conserved magnetic charges, the dipolar model gives place to a phase diagram which is quite comparable with those previously obtained for on-lattice systems of electri…
We study the triangular-lattice Ising model with dipolar interactions, inspired by its realisation in artificial arrays of nanomagnets. We show that a classical spin-liquid forms at intermediate temperatures, and that its behaviour can be tuned by temperature and/or a small lattice distortion between a string Luttinger liquid and a domain-wall-network state. At low temperature there is a transition into a magnetically ordered phase, which can be first-order or continous with a crossover in the critical behaviour between Pokrovsky-Talapov and 2D-Ising universality. When the Pokrovsky-Talapov cr…
We study anisotropic antiferromagnetic one-layer films with dipolar and nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. We obtain a unified phase diagram as a function of effective uniaxial D_e and quadrupolar C anisotropy constants. We study in some detail how spins reorient continuously below a temperature T_s as T and D_e vary.
Previous studies have found that calculations which consider long-range magnetic dipolar interactions truncated at a finite cut-off distance Rc predict spurious (unphysical) long-range ordered phases for Ising and Heisenberg systems on the pyrochlore lattice. In this paper we show that, similar to these two cases, calculations that use truncated dipolar interactions to model the Gd3Ga5O12 garnet antiferromagnet also predict unphysical phases with incommensurate ordering wave vector q_ord that is very sensitive to the dipolar cut-off distance Rc.
In the past several years, many important innovations in nanotechnology were made. Today it becomes possible to make nanosize magnetic particles, and development of high storage-density magnetic device is desired. In such a magnetic particle system, dipole interaction plays the main role. In this note, we consider stable states of dipolar systems at low temperature: Some systems show ``antiferromagnetic structure'', and others show magnetic domain structure, depending on lattice shapes.
Aging in a two-dimensional Ising spin model with both ferromagnetic exchange and antiferromagnetic dipolar interactions is established and investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. The behaviour of the autocorrelation function $C(t,t_w)$ is analyzed for different values of the temperature, the waiting time $t_w$ and the quotient $δ=J_0/J_d$, $J_0$ and $J_d$ being the strength of exchange and dipolar interactions respectively. Different behaviours are encountered for $C(t,t_w)$ at low temperatures as $δ$ is varied. Our results show that, depending on the value of $δ$, the dynamics of this non-d…
We have studied needle shaped three-dimensional classical spin systems with purely dipolar interactions in the microcanonical ensemble, using both numerical simulations and analytical approximations. We have observed spontaneous magnetization for different finite cubic lattices. The transition from the paramagnetic to the ferromagnetic phase is shown to be first-order. For two lattice types we have observed magnetization flips in the phase transition region. In some cases, gaps in the accessible values of magnetization appear, a signature of the ergodicity breaking found for systems with long-…
We show results of Monte Carlo simulations of an array of monodispersed magnetic monodomain particles, in a square lattice with dipolar interactions and perpendicular uniaxial anisotropy. We first show the equilibrium phase diagram of the system, which shows three phases, superparamagnetic (SP), out-of-plane antiferromagnetic and in-plane antiferromagnetic with a reorientation transition between the last two. We then employ a recently introduced time quantified Monte Carlo method to study the relaxation of autocorrelations of the particle array for different ratios of dipolar to anisotropy ene…
We have measured the low-temperature specific heat of the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7 in zero magnetic field. The specific heat is found to drop exponentially below approximately 350 mK. This provides evidence for a gapped spin-wave spectrum due to an anisotropy resulting from single ion effects and long-range dipolar interactions. The data are well fitted by linear spin-wave theory, ruling out unconventional low energy magnetic excitations in this system, and allowing a determination of the pertinent exchange interactions in this material.
At low temperatures, some lattice spin models with simple ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interactions (for example nearest-neighbour interaction being isotropic in spin space on a bipartite three-dimensional lattice) produce orientationally ordered phases exhibiting nematic (second--rank) order, in addition to the primary first-rank one; on the other hand, in the Literature, they have been rather seldom investigated in this respect. Here we study the thermodynamic properties of a three-dimensional model with dipolar-like interaction. Its ground state is found to exhibit full orientational …
By means of the molecular dynamics simulation on gradual cooling processes, we investigate magnetic properties of classical spin systems only with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, which we call dipolar systems. Focusing on their finite-size effect, particularly their boundary geometry dependence, we study two finite dipolar squares cut out from a square lattice with $Φ=0$ and $π/4$, where $Φ$ is an angle between the direction of the lattice axis and that of the square boundary. Distinctly different results are obtained in the two dipolar squares. In the $Φ=0$ square, the ``from-edge-to-…
We study the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in two dimensions, interacting through a nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange ($J$) and a ferromagnetic dipolar-like interaction ($J_d$), using double-time Green's function, decoupled within the random phase approximation (RPA). We obtain the dependence of $k_B T_c/J_d$ as a function of frustration parameter $δ$, where $T_c$ is the ferromagnetic (F) transition temperature and $δ$ is the ratio between the strengths of the exchange and dipolar interaction (i.e., $δ= J/J_d$). The transition temperature between the F and paramagnetic phases dec…
We use Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the feasibility of detecting thermal order by disorder in real antiferromagnetic Ising pyrochlores, frustrated by a magnetic field applied in the $[110]$ direction. Building on an ideal system with only nearest-neighbour exchange interactions and a perfectly oriented field, we consider the effects of dipolar interactions and field misalignment. Our approach is special in that it relies more in the possibility to switch on and off the entropic drive towards order than in the absence of (or immunity to) a particular perturbation. It can then be applied,…
Despite their simple formulation, short range classical antiferromagnetic Ising models on frustrated lattices give rise to exotic phases of matter, in particular due to their macroscopic ground state degeneracy. Recent experiments on artificial spin systems comprising arrays of chirally coupled nanomagnets provide a significant strengthening of the nearest neighbour couplings compared to systems with dipolar-coupled nanomagnets. This opens the way to design artificial spin systems emulating Ising models with nearest neighbour couplings. In this paper, we compare the results of an extensive inv…
Tb2Ti2O7 is a pyrochlore antiferromagnet that has dynamical spins and only short-range correlations even at 50 mK; the lowest temperature explored so far, which is much smaller than the scale set by the Curie-Weiss temperature T_{CW}~14 K. The absence of long-range order in this material is not understood. Recently, virtual crystal field excitations (VCFEs) have been shown to be significant in Tb2Ti2O7. While previous work found that VCFEs-induced renormalization of the nearest neighbor Ising exchange leads to spin ice correlations on a single tetrahedron, their effect on spin correlations has…
Motivated by dipolar-coupled artificial spin systems, we present a theoretical study of the classical $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. We establish the ground-state phase diagram of this model for $J_1 > |J_2|, |J_3|$ based on exact results for the ground-state energies. When all the couplings are antiferromagnetic, the model has three macroscopically degenerate ground-state phases, and using tensor networks, we can calculate the entropies of these phases and of their boundaries very accurately. In two cases, the entropy appears to be a fraction of that of the triangu…
The ground state ensemble of the highly frustrated pyrochlore-lattice antiferromagnet can be mapped to a coarse-grained ``polarization'' field satisfying a zero-divergence condition From this it follows that the correlations of this field, as well as the actual spin correlations, decay with separation like a dipole-dipole interaction ($1/|R|^3$). Furthermore, a lattice version of the derivation gives an approximate formula for spin correlations, with several features that agree well with simulations and neutron-diffraction measurements of diffuse scattering, in particular the pinch-point (pseu…
We present numerical studies of dipolar spin ice in the presence of a magnetic field slightly tilted away from the [111] axis. We find a first-order transition from a kagome ice to a $\mathbf{q}=$X state when the external field is tilted toward the $[11\bar{2}]$ direction. This is consistent with the anomalous critical scattering previously observed in the neutron scattering experiment on the spin ice material $\textrm{Ho}_{2}\textrm{Ti}_{2}\textrm{O}_{7}$ in a tilted field [Nat. Phys. 3, 566 (2007)]. We show that this ordering originates from the antiferromagnetic alignment of spin chains on …
By tempered Monte Carlo simulations, we study 2D site-diluted dipolar Ising systems. Dipoles are randomly placed on a fraction x of all L^2 sites in a square lattice, and point along a common crystalline axis. For x_c< x<=1, where x_c = 0.79(5), we find an antiferromagnetic phase below a temperature which vanishes as x approaches x_c from above. At lower values of x, we study (i) distributions of the spin--glass (SG) overlap q, (ii) their relative mean square deviation Delta_q^2 and kurtosis and (iii) xi_L/L, where xi_L is a SG correlation length. From their variation with temperature and syst…
The weathervane modes of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice constitute possibly the earliest and certainly the most celebrated example of a flat band of zero-energy excitations. Such modes arise from the underconstraint that has since become a defining criterion of strong geometrical frustration. We investigate the fate of this flat band when dipolar interactions are added. These change the nearest-neighbour model fundamentally as they remove the Heisenberg spin-rotational symmetry while also introducing a long- range component to the interaction. We explain how the…
We investigate the properties of the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet with local <111> planar anisotropy. We find the ground states and show that the configurational ground state entropy is subextensive. By computing the free energy due to harmonic fluctuations and by carrying out Monte Carlo simulations, we confirm earlier work indicating that the model exhibits thermal order-by-disorder leading to low temperature long-range order consisting of discrete magnetic domains. We compute the spin wave spectrum and show that thermal and quantum fluctuations select the same magnetic structure. Using Mon…
We simulate the dc magnetic response of the diluted dipolar-coupled Ising magnet LiHo\(_{0.045}\)Y\(_{0.955}\)F\(_4\) in a transverse field, using exact diagonalization of a two-spin Hamiltonian averaged over nearest-neighbour configurations. The pairwise model, incorporating hyperfine interactions, accounts for the observed drop-off in the longitudinal (c-axis) susceptibility with increasing transverse field; with the inclusion of a small tilt in the transverse field, it also accounts for the behavior of the off-diagonal magnetic susceptibility. The hyperfine interactions do not appear to lea…
We study spin correlations for the highly frustrated classical pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnets with O(N) symmetry in the limit T->0. We conjecture that a local constraint obeyed by the extensively degenerate ground states dictates a dipolar form for the asymptotic spin correlations, at all N $\ne$ 2 for which the system is paramagnetic down to T=0. We verify this conjecture in the cases N=1 and N=3 by simulations and to all orders in the 1/N expansion about the solvable N=infinity limit. Remarkably, the N=infinity formulae are an excellent fit, at all distances, to the correlators at N=3 a…
From a microscopic model for the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Sn2O7, including the crystal field Hamiltonian and interactions between the angular momenta, we compute an effective pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian Heff$ that incorporates perturbatively in the effective interactions the effect of excited crystal field levels. We obtain the semiclassical ground states of Heff and find a region of parameter space with a two-in/two-out spin ice configuration on each tetrahedron with ordering wavevector q=0 and with spins canted away from the local Ising axes as found in Tb2Sn2O7. This ground state can al…
We study the effect in geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets of weak, random variations in the strength of exchange interactions. Without disorder the simplest classical models for these systems have macroscopically degenerate ground states, and this degeneracy may prevent ordering at any temperature. Weak exchange randomness favours a small subset of these ground states and induces a spin-glass transition at an ordering temperature determined by the amplitude of modulations in interaction strength. We use the replica approach to formulate a theory for this transition, showing that it fall…
The magnetic pyrochlore oxide materials of general chemical formula R2Ti2O7 and R2Sn2O7 (R = rare earth) display a host of interesting physical behaviours depending on the flavour of rare earth ion. These properties depend on the value of the total magnetic moment, the crystal field interactions at each rare earth site and the complex interplay between magnetic exchange and long-range dipole-dipole interactions. This work focuses on the low temperature physics of the dipolar isotropic frustrated antiferromagnetic pyrochlore materials. Candidate magnetic ground states are numerically determined…
We study equilibration and ordering in the classical dipolar kagome Ising antiferromagnet, which we show behaves as a disorder-free fragile spin glass. By identifying an appropriate order parameter, we demonstrate a transition to the ordered state proposed by Chioar et al. [Phys. Rev. B 93, 214410 (2016)] with a 12-site unit cell that breaks time-reversal and sublattice symmetries, and further provide evidence that the nature of the transition is first order. Upon approaching the transition, the spin dynamics slow dramatically. The system readily falls out of equilibrium, overshooting the tran…
Experimental evidence from measurements of the a.c. and d.c. susceptibility, and heat capacity data show that the pyrochlore structure oxide, Gd_2Ti_2O_7, exhibits short range order that starts developing at 30K, as well as long range magnetic order at $T\sim 1$K. The Curie-Weiss temperature, $θ_{CW}$ = -9.6K, is largely due to exchange interactions. Deviations from the Curie-Weiss law occur below $\sim$10K while magnetic heat capacity contributions are found at temperatures above 20K. A sharp maximum in the heat capacity at $T_c=0.97$K signals a transition to a long range ordered state, with …
Despite the availability of a spin Hamiltonian for the Gd3Ga5O12 garnet (GGG) for over twenty five years, there has so far been little theoretical insight regarding the many unusual low temperature properties of GGG. Here we investigate GGG in zero magnetic field using mean-field theory. We reproduce the spin liquid-like correlations and, most importantly, explain the positions of the sharp peaks seen in powder neutron diffraction experiments. We show that it is crucial to treat accurately the long-range nature of the magnetic dipolar interactions to allow for a determination of the small exch…
We study near-neighbour and dipolar Ising models on a lattice of corner-sharing octahedra. In an extended parameter range of both models, frustration between antiferromagnetism and a spin-ice-like three-in-three-out rule stabilises a Coulomb phase with correlated dipolar and quadrupolar spin textures, both yielding distinctive neutron-scattering signatures. Strong further-neighbour perturbations cause the two components to order independently, resulting in unusual multi-$k$ orders. We propose experimental realisations of our model in rare-earth antiperovskites.
The effect of dipolar interaction and local uniaxial anisotropy on the magnetic response of small spin clusters where spins are located on the vertices of icosahedron, cuboctahedron, tetrahedron and square geometry have been investigated. We consider the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 and spin-1 Heisenberg model with uniaxial anisotropy and dipolar interaction and apply numerical exact diagonalization technique in order to study the influence of frustration and anisotropy on the ground state properties of the spin-clusters. The ground state magnetization, spin-spin correlation an…
We illustrate how the tensorial kernel support vector machine (TK-SVM) can probe the hidden multipolar orders and emergent local constraint in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We show that TK-SVM learns the finite-temperature phase diagram in an unsupervised way. Moreover, in virtue of its strong interpretability, it identifies the tensorial quadrupolar and octupolar orders, which define a biaxial $D_{3h}$ spin nematic, and the local constraint that underlies the selection of coplanar states. We then discuss the disorder hierarchy of the phases, which can be inferred from both …
