We study phonons in a dynamical chain of ions confined by a trap with a time-dependent (axial) potential strength and demonstrate that they behave in the same way as quantum fields in an expanding/contracting universe. Based on this analogy, we present a scheme for the detection of the analogue of cosmological particle creation which should be feasible with present-day technology. In order to test the quantum nature of the particle creation mechanism and to distinguish it from classical effects such as heating, we propose to measure the two-phonon amplitude via the $2^{\rm nd}$ red side-band and to compare it with the one-phonon amplitude ($1^{\rm st}$ red side-band). We study two ions confined in a Penning trap. We show that electronically highly excited states exist in which an electron is delocalized among the two ions forming a giant molecule of several micrometer size. At energies close to the top of the Coulomb barrier these molecular states can be regarded as superpositions of Rydberg states of individual ions. We illuminate the possibility to observe coherent charge transfer between the ions. Beyond a critical principal quantum number the electron can coherently tunnel through the Coulomb barrier to an adjacent doubly charged ion. The tunneling occu…
We consider the transversal modes of ions in a linear radio frequency (rf) trap where we control the time dependent axial confinement to show that we can excite quanta of motion via a two-mode squeezing process. This effect is analogous to phenomena predicted to occur during the evaporation of black holes and cosmological particle creation, in general out of reach for experimental investigation. As substantial advantage of this proposal in comparison to previous ones we propose to exploit radial and axial modes simultaneously to permit experimental access of these effects based on state-of-the…
A quantum theory of light propagation in two optical channel waveguides tunnelling-coupled to a common continuum of modes (such as those of a slab waveguide) is presented, and classical and quantum interference effects are investigated. For classical light, the photonic system realizes an optical analogue of coherent population trapping in the continuum encountered in atomic physics, where destructive interference between different light leakage channels leads to the appearance of a trapped state embedded in the continuum. For nonclassical light, two-photon interference effects are predicted, …
The creation of matter and structure in our universe is currently described by an intricate interplay of quantum field theory and general relativity. Signatures of this process during an early inflationary period can be observed, while direct tests remain out of reach. Here, we study an experimental analog of the process based on trapped atomic ions. We create pairs of phonons by tearing apart quantum vacuum fluctuations. Thereby, we prepare ions in an entangled state of motion. Controlling timescales and the coupling to environments should permit optimizing efficiencies while keeping the effe…
We propose a fast and efficient technique to create classes of highly entangled states of trapped ions, such as arbitrary Dicke states and superpositions of them, e.g. NOON states. The ions are initialized in the phonon ground state and are addressed globally with a composite pulse that is resonant with the first motional sideband. The technique operates on comparatively short time scales, as resonant interactions allow one to use the minimum laser pulse area. The number of single pulses from the composite sequence is equal to the number of ions, thus the implementation complexity grows only l…
We discuss two-dimensional Madelung fluid dynamics whose irrotational case reduces into the Schrödinger equation for a free single particle. We show that the self-trapped spinning-stationary Madelung fluid reported in the previous paper can be analogically identified as an equilibrium thermodynamics system. This is done by making correspondence between Shannon entropy over Madelung density and internal energy to be defined in the main text, respectively with thermal-entropy and thermal-internal energy of equilibrium thermodynamics system. This leads us to identify a Madelung fluid analog of th…
We present a method for the controlled and robust generation of spatial superposition states of single atoms in micro-traps. Using a counter-intuitive positioning sequence for the individual potentials and appropriately chosen trapping frequencies, we show that it is possible to selectively create two different orthogonal superposition states, which can in turn be used for quantum information purposes.
If the boundary conditions of the quantum vacuum are changed in time, quantum field theory predicts that real, observable particles can be created in the initially empty modes. Here, we realize this effect by changing the boundary conditions of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, which yields a population of initially unoccupied spatial and spin excitations. We prove that the excitations are created as entangled excitation pairs by certifying continuous-variable entanglement within the many-particle output state.
In inflationary cosmology, the rapid expansion of the early universe resulted in the spontaneous production of cosmological particles from vacuum fluctuations, observable today in the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. The analogue of cosmological particle creation in a quantum fluid could provide insight, but an observation has not yet been achieved. Here we report the spontaneous creation of analogue cosmological particles in the laboratory, using a quenched 3-dimensional quantum fluid of light. We observe acoustic peaks in the density power spectrum, in close quantitative agreement w…
We discuss a protocol for the analogue quantum simulation of superradiance and subradiance using a linear chain of N trapped qubit ions with a single sympathetic cooling ion. We develop a simple analytic model that shows the dynamics of the qubit subspace converge to those of a cloud undergoing Dicke superradiance and subradiance. We provide numerical simulations of the full ion chain and show that they converge to the dynamics predicted by our analytic model with no fitting parameters. We also map out the parameter regime needed to reach this convergence.
We demonstrate a microfabricated surface-electrode ion trap that is applicable as a nanofriction emulator and studies of many-body dynamics of interacting systems. The trap enables both single-well and double-well trapping potentials in the radial direction, where the distance between the two potential wells can be adjusted by the applied RF voltage. In the double-well configuration, parallel ion strings can be formed, which is a suitable system for the emulation of the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model. We derive the condition under which the trap functions as a FK model emulator. The trap is desi…
We develop the theory to describe the equilibrium ion positions and phonon modes for a trapped ion quantum simulator in an oblate Paul trap that creates two-dimensional Coulomb crystals in a triangular lattice. By coupling the internal states of the ions to laser beams propagating along the symmetry axis, we study the effective Ising spin-spin interactions that are mediated via the axial phonons and are less sensitive to ion micromotion. We find that the axial mode frequencies permit the programming of Ising interactions with inverse power law spin-spin couplings that can be tuned from uniform…
We set up a tunneling approach to the analogue Hawking effect in the case of models of analogue gravity which are affected by dispersive effects. An effective Schroedinger-like equation for the basic scattering phenomenon IN->P+N*, where IN is the incident mode, P is the positive norm reflected mode, and N* is the negative norm one, signalling particle creation, is derived, aimed to an approximate description of the phenomenon. Horizons and barrier penetration play manifestly a key-role in giving rise to pair-creation. The non-dispersive limit is also correctly recovered. Drawbacks of the mode…
One of the fundamental predictions of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) is the spontaneous creation of particle--antiparticle pairs from vacuum in presence of a very strong electric field. Under these extreme conditions a strongly bound state can fetch an otherwise unobservable electron from the Dirac sea, leaving behind a hole representing a positron. Although generally known for many decades, the effect has not yet been demonstrated experimentally. We propose an analogue model of the quantum Dirac field, realized by ultra--cold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice, aiming at an experimental sim…
We present a method for the creation of closed-loop lattices for ultra-cold atoms using dressed potentials. We analytically describe the generation of trap lattices that are state-dependent, with dynamically controlled lattice depths and positioning. In a design akin to a synchronous motor, the potentials arise from the combination of a static, ring-shaped quadrupole field and multipole radio-frequency fields. Our technique relies solely on static and radio-frequency (rf) magnetic fields, enabling the creation of robust atom traps with simple control via rf amplitudes and phases. Potential app…
We present a unitary quantum control scheme that produces a highly monochromatic ion beam from a Paul trap. Our protocol is implementable by supplying the segmented electrodes with voltages of the order of Volts, which mitigates the impact of fluctuating voltages in previous designs and leads to a low-dispersion beam of ions. Moreover, our proposal does not rely on sympathetically cooling the ions, which bypasses the need of loading different species in the trap -- namely, the propelled ion and, e.g., a $^{40}$Ca$^+$ atom able to exert sympathetic cooling -- incrementing the repetition rate of…
We present a method to engineer the unitary charge conjugation operator, as given by quantum field theory, in the highly controlled context of quantum optics, thus allowing one to simulate the creation of charged particles with well-defined momenta simultaneously with their respective antiparticles. Our method relies on trapped ions driven by a laser field and interacting with a single mode of a light field in a high Q cavity.
We present a straightforward scheme for creating macroscopic superpositions of different superfluid flow states of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices. This scheme has the great advantage that all the techniques required are achievable with current experiments. Furthermore, the relative difficulty of creating cats scales favorably with the size of the cat. This means that this scheme may be well-suited to creating superpositions involving large numbers of particles. Such states may have interesting technological applications such as making quantum-limited measurements of angu…
Analogue gravity enables the study of fields on curved spacetimes in the laboratory. There are numerous experimental platforms in which amplification at the event horizon or the ergoregion has been observed. Here, we demonstrate how optically generating a defect in a polariton microcavity enables the creation of one- and two-dimensional, transsonic fluid flows. We show that this highly tuneable method permits the creation of sonic horizons. Furthermore, we present a rotating geometry akin to the water-wave bathtub vortex. These experiments usher-in the possibility of observing stimulated as we…
Linear Paul traps have been used recently to simulate the transverse field Ising model with long-range spin-spin couplings. We study the intrinsic effects of phonon creation (from the initial phonon ground state) on the spin-state probability and spin entanglement for such quantum spin simulators. While it has often been assumed that phonon effects are benign because they play no role in the pure Ising model, they can play a significant role when a transverse field is added to the model. We use a many-body factorization of the quantum time-evolution operator of the system, adiabatic perturbati…
This thesis provides an overview of an approach to quantum simulations using magnesium-25 ions stored in a linear Paul trap as the carriers of quantum information. Their quantum state is manipulated and read out using ultraviolet laser beams. Several important steps towards realising the first experiments have been undertaken, the most striking of which is cooling the ions to their motional ground state. We describe a first experiment simulating cosmological particle creation in the Early Universe and discuss the expected results.
We compute how phonon creation affects the fidelity of the quantum spin dynamics in trapped ion simulators. A rigorous treatment of the quantum dynamics is made by employing an exact operator factorization of the evolution operator. Although it is often assumed that phonon creation modifies the dynamics of the spin evolution, for an Ising spin-spin interaction in an external magnetic field, phonons have \textit{no effect} on the probabilities of spin product states measured in the direction of the Ising model axis. Phonons play a much more important role in influencing the effective spin dynam…
We propose a novel technique for the creation of maximally entangled symmetric Dicke states in an ion trap using adiabatic passage, which requires only a pair of chirped pulses from a single laser and is applicable to any number of ions and excitations. By utilising a particular factorisation of the Hilbert space for multi-level ladders we show that the problem can be reduced to `bow-tie' configuration energy-level crossings. This technique is naturally robust against fluctuations in the laser intensity and the chirp rate. Even when realistic heating rates are considered, we estimate that the …
We discuss the creation of many-particle entanglement in an ion trap where all ions are simultaneously coupled to bichromatic laser fields. It is shown that in a time-averaged, coarse-grained picture the system can be mapped onto a spin ensemble with controllable collective interactions. An adiabatic change of laser parameters allows a transfer from separable to entangled eigenstates of the many-particle Hamiltonian. Of particular interest is a transition in the ground state which in some cases corresponds to a quantum phase transition. The influence of decoherence mechanisms can be substantia…
Spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs out of the vacuum due to a strong electric field is a spectacular manifestation of the relativistic energy-momentum relation for the Dirac fermions. This fundamental prediction of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) has not yet been confirmed experimentally as the generation of a sufficiently strong electric field extending over a large enough space-time volume still presents a challenge. Surprisingly, distant areas of physics may help us to circumvent this difficulty. In condensed matter and solid state physics (areas commonly considered as low energy…
Only very recently, rescaling time has been recognized as a way to achieve adiabatic dynamics in fast processes. The advantage of time-rescaling over other shortcuts to adiabaticity is that it does not depend on the eigenspectrum and eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. However, time-rescaling requires that the original dynamics are adiabatic, and in the rescaled time frame the Hamiltonian exhibits non-trivial time-dependence. In this work, we show how time-rescaling can be applied to Dirac dynamics, and we show that all time-dependence can be absorbed into the effective potentials through a judici…
We report a demonstration of simple and effective loading of strontium ions into a linear radio frequency Paul trap using photoionization. The ionization pathway is 5s2 1S0 -- 5s5p 1P1 -- 5p2 1D2, and the 5p2 1D2 final state is auto-ionizing. Both transitions are driven using diode lasers: a grating-stabilized 922 nm diode doubled in a single pass through potassium niobate to 461 nm and a bare diode at 405 nm. Using this technique, we have reduced the background pressure during the ion loading process by a factor of 2 compared to the conventional technique of electron bombardment. Initial ion …
By performing a slow adiabatic change between two traps of a quantum particle, it is possible to transform an eigenstate of the original trap into the corresponding eigenstate of the final trap. If no level crossings are involved, the process can be made faster than adiabatic by setting first the interpolated evolution of the wave function from its initial to its final form and inferring from this evolution the trap deformation. We find a simple and compact formula which gives the trap shape at any time for any interpolation scheme. It is applicable even in complicated scenarios where there is…
We show that the physical system consisting of trapped ions interacting with lasers may undergo a rich variety of quantum phase transitions. By changing the laser intensities and polarizations the dynamics of the internal states of the ions can be controlled, in such a way that an Ising or Heisenberg-like interaction is induced between effective spins. Our scheme allows us to build an analogue quantum simulator of spin systems with trapped ions, and observe and analyze quantum phase transitions with unprecedent opportunities for the measurement and manipulation of spins.
There has been a recent surge of interest and progress in creating subwavelength free-space optical potentials for ultra-cold atoms. A key open question is whether geometric potentials, which are repulsive and ubiquitous in the creation of subwavelength free-space potentials, forbid the creation of narrow traps with long lifetimes. Here, we show that it is possible to create such traps. We propose two schemes for realizing subwavelength traps and demonstrate their superiority over existing proposals. We analyze the lifetime of atoms in such traps and show that long-lived bound states are possi…
While many-particle entanglement can be found in natural solids and strongly interacting atomic and molecular gases, generating highly entangled states between weakly interacting particles in a controlled and scalable way presents a significant challenge. We describe here a one-step method to generate entanglement in a dilute gas of cold polar molecules. For molecules in optical traps separated by a few micrometers, we show that maximally entangled states can be created using the strong off-resonant pulses that are routinely used in molecular alignment experiments. We show that the resulting a…
In this paper we investigate a possibility for the existence of an analog of the Quantum Hall Effect for neutral particles with a permanent magnetic moment $μ$ in the presence of crossed inhomogeneous magnetic and electric fields. We predict the appearance of Hall conductivity $σ_H=(e^2/h)ν(μ)$ with the Landau filling factor $ν(μ)\propto μ^2$. The estimates of the model parameters suggest quite an optimistic possibility to experimentally verify this prediction in optically trapped clouds of atomic BEC.
Two-atom systems in small traps are of fundamental interest, first of all for understanding the role of interactions in degenerate cold gases and for the creation of quantum gates in quantum information processing with single-atom traps. One of the key quantities is the inelastic relaxation (decay) time when one of the atoms or both are in a higher hyperfine state. Here we measure this quantity in a heteronuclear system of $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb in a micro optical trap and demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the presence of both fast and slow relaxation processes, depending on the ch…
Anyons are particlelike excitations of strongly correlated phases of matter with fractional statistics, characterized by nontrivial changes in the wave function, generalizing Bose and Fermi statistics, when two of them are interchanged. This can be used to perform quantum computations [A. Yu. Kitaev, Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 303, 2 (2003)]. We show how to simulate the creation and manipulation of Abelian and non- Abelian anyons in topological lattice models using trapped atoms in optical lattices. Our proposal, feasible with present technology, requires an ancilla particle which can undergo single-pa…
We show that particle creation of Bogoliubov modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate due to the accelerated motion of the trap is a genuinely relativistic effect. To this end we show that Bogoliubov modes can be described by a time rescaling of the Minkowski metric. A consequence of this is that Rindler transformations are perceived by the phonons as generalised Rindler transformations where the speed of light is replaced by the speed of sound, enhancing particle creation at small velocities. Since the non-relativistic limit of a Rindler transformation is just a Galilean transformation entailing n…
One of the most striking examples for the production of particles out of the quantum vacuum due to external conditions is cosmological particle creation, which is caused by the expansion or contraction of the Universe. Already in 1939, Schrödinger understood that the cosmic evolution could lead to a mixing of positive and negative frequencies and that this "would mean production or annihilation of matter, merely by the expansion". Later this phenomenon was derived via more modern techniques of quantum field theory in curved space-times by Parker (who apparently was not aware of Schrödinger's w…
We report on the first experimental setup based on a 2D-/3D-MOT scheme to create both Bose-Einstein condensates and degenerate Fermi gases of several ytterbium isotopes. Our setup does not require a Zeeman slower and offers the flexibility to simultaneously produce ultracold samples of other atomic species. Furthermore, the extraordinary optical access favors future experiments in optical lattices. A 2D-MOT on the strong 1S0-1P1 transition captures ytterbium directly from a dispenser of atoms and loads a 3D-MOT on the narrow 1S0-3P1 intercombination transition. Subsequently, atoms are transfer…
Quantum physics has revealed many interesting formal properties associated with the algebra of two operators, A and B, satisfying the partial commutation relation AB-BA=1. This study surveys the relationships between classical combinatorial structures and the reduction to normal form of operator polynomials in such an algebra. The connection is achieved through suitable labelled graphs, or "diagrams", that are composed of elementary "gates". In this way, many normal form evaluations can be systematically obtained, thanks to models that involve set partitions, permutations, increasing trees, as…
We show that gravitational waves create phonons in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). A traveling spacetime distortion produces particle creation resonances that correspond to the dynamical Casimir effect in a BEC phononic field contained in a cavity-type trap. We propose to use this effect to detect gravitational waves. The amplitude of the wave can be estimated applying recently developed relativistic quantum metrology techniques. We provide the optimal precision bound on the estimation of the wave's amplitude. Finally, we show that the parameter regime required to detect gravitational waves …
We investigate the possibility to generate quantum-correlated quasi-particles utilizing analogue gravity systems. The quantumness of these correlations is a key aspect of analogue gravity effects and their presence allows for a clear separation between classical and quantum analogue gravity effects. However, experiments in analogue systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, and shallow water waves, are always conducted at non-ideal conditions, in particular, one is dealing with dispersive media at nonzero temperatures. We analyze the influence of the initial temperature on the entanglement ge…
Advances in light shaping for optical trapping of neutral particles have led to the development of box traps for ultracold atoms and molecules. These traps have allowed the creation of homogeneous quantum gases and opened new possibilities for studies of many-body physics. They simplify the interpretation of experimental results, provide more direct connections with theory, and in some cases allow qualitatively new, hitherto impossible experiments. Here we review progress in this emerging field.
Conversion of vacuum fluctuations into real particles was first predicted by L. Parker considering an expanding universe, followed in S. Hawking's work on black hole radiation. Since their experimental observation is challenging, analogue systems have gained attention in the verification of this concept. Here we propose an experimental set-up consisting of two adjacent piezoelectric semiconducting layers, one of them carrying dynamic quantum dots (DQDs), and the other being p-doped with an attached gate on top, which introduces a space-dependent layer conductivity. The propagation of surface a…
