We present a method for the controlled and robust generation of spatial superposition states of single atoms in micro-traps. Using a counter-intuitive positioning sequence for the individual potentials and appropriately chosen trapping frequencies, we show that it is possible to selectively create two different orthogonal superposition states, which can in turn be used for quantum information purposes.
We suggest a way to produce higher-energy superposition states in a circular system of quantum wells. This is inspired by a link to convergence results for geometric transformations of polygons using circulant Hermitian matrices.
The principle of superposition is a key ingredient for quantum mechanics. A recent work [M. Oszmaniec et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] has shown that a quantum adder that deterministically generates a superposition of two unknown states is forbidden. Here we propose a probabilistic approach for creating a superposition state of two arbitrary states encoded in two three-dimensional cavities. Our implementation is based on a three-level superconducting transmon qubit dispersively coupled to two cavities. Numerical simulations show that high-fidelity generation of the superposition of…
As one of the most intriguing intrinsic properties of quantum world, quantum superposition provokes great interests in its own generation. Oszmaniec [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 110403 (2016)] have proven that though a universal quantum machine that creates superposition of arbitrary two unknown states is physically impossible, a probabilistic protocol exists in the case of two input states have nonzero overlaps with the referential state. Here we report a heralded quantum machine realizing superposition of arbitrary two unknown photonic qubits as long as they have nonzero overlaps with the horizont…
The superposition principle is one of the landmarks of quantum mechanics. The importance of quantum superpositions provokes questions about the limitations that quantum mechanics itself imposes on the possibility of their generation. In this work we systematically study the problem of creation of superpositions of unknown quantum states. First, we prove a no-go theorem that forbids the existence of a universal probabilistic quantum protocol producing a superposition of two unknown quantum states. Secondly, we provide an explicit probabilistic protocol generating a superposition of two unknown …
Based on the detection loophole-free photon key distribution (PKD) compatible with classical optical systems, an optical key distribution (OKD) protocol is presented for unconditionally secured cryptography in fiber-optic communications networks using addressable continuous phase basis, where each communication channel is composed of paired transmission lines. The unconditional security in OKD lies in quantum superposition between the paired lines of each channel. The continuous phase basis in OKD can be applied for one-time-pad optical cryptography in networks, whose network address capacity …
Mesoscopic quantum superpositions, or Schrödinger cat states, are widely studied for fundamental investigations of quantum measurement and decoherence as well as applications in sensing and quantum information science. The generation and maintenance of such states relies upon a balance between efficient external coherent control of the system and sufficient isolation from the environment. Here we create a variety of cat states of a single trapped atom's motion in a harmonic oscillator using ultrafast laser pulses. These pulses produce high fidelity impulsive forces that separate the atom into …
We study the creation of quantum skyrmions in quadratic nanoscopic lattices of quantum spins coupled by Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya and exchange interactions. We numerically show that different kinds of quantum skyrmions, characterized by the magnitude of their spin expectation values and strong differences in their stability, can appear as ground state and as metastable excitations. In dependence on the coupling strengths and the lattice size, an adiabatic rotation scheme of the magnetization at the lattice boundaries allows for a controlled creation of quantum skyrmions.
Dynamical studies of macroscopic superposition states: Phase engineering of controlled entangled number states of Bose-Einstein condensate in multiple wells
We propose an experimental scheme to generate, in a heralded fashion, arbitrary quantum superpositions of two-mode optical states with a fixed total photon number $n$ based on weakly squeezed two-mode squeezed state resources (obtained via weak parametric down conversion), linear optics, and photon detection. Arbitrary $d$-level (qudit) states can be created this way where $d=n+1$. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate our scheme for $n=2$. The resulting qutrit states are characterized via optical homodyne tomography. We also discuss possible extensions to more than two modes concluding t…

While witnessing the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era and beyond, quantum federated learning (QFL) has recently become an emerging field of study. In QFL, each quantum computer or device locally trains its quantum neural network (QNN) with trainable gates, and communicates only these gate parameters over classical channels, without costly quantum communications. Towards enabling QFL under various channel conditions, in this article we develop a depth-controllable architecture of entangled slimmable quantum neural networks (eSQNNs), and propose an entangled slimmable QFL (eSQFL) that…

We propose a new method to create two-photon states in a controllable way using interaction between the Rydberg atoms during the storage and retrieval of slow light. A distinctive feature of the suggested procedure is that the slow light is stored into a superposition of two atomic coherences under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Interaction between the atoms during the storage period creates entangled pairs of atoms in a superposition state that is orthogonal to the initially stored state. Restoring the slow light from this new atomic state one can produce a two …
In this work, we investigate the controlled teleportation protocol using optical qubits within the single-rail logic. The protocol makes use of an entangled tripartite state shared by the controller and two further parties (users) who will perform standard teleportation. The goal of the protocol is to guarantee that the teleportation is successful only with the permission of the controller. Optical qubits based on either superpositions of vacuum and single-photon states or superposition of coherent states are employed here to encode a tripartite maximal slice state upon which the protocol is b…
In a recent series of works [Ebler et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 120502 (2018); arXiv:1809.06655v2; arXiv:1810.10457v2], it has been proposed that the quantum superposition of causal order -- the quantum switch -- may offer an enhancement of classical and quantum channel capacity through noisy channels, a phenomena that was coined `causal activation'. In this paper we attempt to clarify the nature of the purported advantage, by comparing the quantum switch to a class of processes that can be interpreted as quantum superposition of processes with the same causal order. We show that some of these…
The controlled creation of quantum emitters in diamond represents a major research effort in the fabrication of single-photon devices. Here, we present the scalable production of silicon-vacancy (SiV) color centers in single-crystal diamond by ion implantation. The lateral position of the SiV is spatially controlled by a 1-$μ$m pinhole placed in front of the sample, which can be moved nanometer precise using a piezo stage. The initial implantation position is controlled by monitoring the ion beam position with a camera. Hereby, silicon ions are implanted at the desired spots in an area compara…
The ability to generate light in a pure quantum state is essential for advances in optical quantum technologies. However, obtaining quantum states with control in the photon-number has remained elusive. Optical light fields with zero and one photon can be produced by single atoms, but so far it has been limited to generating incoherent mixtures, or coherent superpositions with a very small one-photon term. Here, we report on the on-demand generation of quantum superpositions of zero, one, and even two photons, via pulsed coherent control of a single artificial atom. Driving the system up to fu…
The physics of quantized vortex excitations in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates has been extensively studied in recent years.Although simple vortex lines are relatively easy to create, control, and measure in experiments, it is a lot more difficult to do the same for vortex ring structures. Here we suggest and explore a method for generating and controlling superfluid vortex rings, vortex ring lattices, and other three dimensional vortex structures in toroidally-trapped superfluid Bose--Einstein condensates by using the artificial magnetic field produced by an optical nanofiber. The presence of …
We propose a method to create "spin cat states", i.e. macroscopic superpositions of coherent spin states, in Bose-Einstein condensates using the Kerr nonlinearity due to atomic collisions. Based on a detailed study of atom loss, we conclude that cat sizes of hundreds of atoms should be realistic. The existence of the spin cat states can be demonstrated by optical readout. Our analysis also includes the effects of higher-order nonlinearities, atom number fluctuations, and limited readout efficiency.
We describe how to prepare an electrically levitated nanodiamond in a superposition of orientations via microwave driving of a single embedded nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center. Suitably aligning the magnetic field with the NV center can serve to reach the regime of ultrastrong coupling between the NV and the diamond rotation, enabling single-spin control of the particle's three-dimensional orientation. We derive the effective spin-oscillator Hamiltonian for small amplitude rotation about the equilibrium configuration and develop a protocol to create and observe quantum superpositions of the partic…

We present a quantum random number generator (QRNG) based on the random outcomes inherent in projective measurements on a superposition of quantum states of light. Firstly, we use multiplexed holograms encoded on a spatial light modulator to spatially map down-converted photons onto a superposition of optical paths. This gives us full digital control of the mapping process which we can tailor to achieve any desired probability distribution. More importantly, we use this method to account for any bias present within our transmission and detection system, forgoing the need for time-consuming and…
