We have studied charge transport in a one-dimensional chain of small Josephson junctions using a single-electron transistor. We observe a crossover from time-correlated tunneling of single electrons to that of Cooper pairs as a function of both magnetic field and current. At relatively high magnetic field, single-electron transport dominates and the tunneling frequency is given by f=I/e, where I is the current through the chain and e is the electron's charge. As the magnetic field is lowered, the frequency gradually shifts to f=I/2e for I>200 fA, indicating Cooper-pair transport. For the parameters of the measured sample, we expect the Cooper-pair transport to be incoherent.
We analyze tunneling of Cooper pairs across voltage biased asymmetric single-Cooper-pair transistors. Also tunneling of Cooper pairs across two capacitively coupled Cooper-pair boxes is considered, when the capacitive coupling and Cooper pair tunneling are provided by a small Josephson junction between the islands. The theoretical analysis is done at subgap voltages, where the current-voltage characteristics depend strongly on the macroscopic eigenstates of the island(s) and their coupling to the dissipative environment. As the environment we use an impedance which satisfies Re[Z]<<R_Q and a f…
We have measured, in real time, individual quasiparticle tunneling in a single Cooper pair transistor, using rf reflectometry on the supercurrent branch. We have extracted the even-to-odd and odd-to-even transition rates directly by analyzing the distributions of dwell times in the even and odd states of the transistor. We discuss both the measurement and analysis techniques and report on the temperature and gate dependence of the quasiparticle tunneling rates.
We analyze how decoherence appears in the I-V characteristics of a voltage-biased single-Cooper-pair transistor. Especially the effect on resonant single or several Cooper-pair tunneling is studied. We consider both a symmetric and an asymmetric transistor. As a decoherence source we use a small resistive impedance (Re[Z(w)]<<R_Q=h/4e^2) in series with the transistor, which provides both thermal and quantum fluctuations of the voltage. Additional decoherence sources are quasiparticle tunneling across the Josephson junctions and quantum f-noise caused by spurious charge fluctuators nearby the i…
We propose a circuit comprising a linear array of three small-capacitance superconducting tunnel junctions with miniature resistors (R > R_Q = h/4e^2 = 6.5 kOhm) attached to the ends of this array. Owing to the Coulomb blockade effect and the effect of dissipative environment on the supercurrent, this circuit enables the gate-controlled transfer of individual Cooper pairs. The first experiment on operating the Al-Cr Cooper pair R-pump is described.
We measure the tunneling rates and coupling coefficients for local Andreev, non-local Andreev and elastic cotunneling processes. The non-local Andreev process, giving rise to Cooper pair splitting, exhibits the same coupling coefficient as the elastic co-tunneling whereas the local Andreev process is more than two orders of magnitude stronger than the corresponding non-local one. Theory estimates describe the findings and explain the large difference in the non-local and local coupling arising from competition between electron diffusion in the superconductor and tunnel junction transparency.
We present radio-frequency measurements on a single-Cooper-pair-transistor in which individual quasiparticle poisoning events were observed with microsecond temporal resolution. Thermal activation of the quasiparticle dynamics is investigated, and consequently, we are able to determine energetics of the poisoning and un-poisoning processes. In particular, we are able to assign an effective quasiparticle temperature to parameterize the poisoning rate.
We study theoretically electromagnetic radiation emitted by inelastic Cooper-pair tunneling. We consider a dc-voltage-biased superconducting transmission line terminated by a Josephson junction. We show that the generated continuous-mode electromagnetic field can be expressed as a function of the time-dependent current across the Josephson junction. The leading-order expansion in the tunneling coupling, similar to the "$P(E)$-theory", has previously been used to investigate the photon emission statistics in the limit of sequential (independent) Cooper-pair tunneling. By explicitly evaluating t…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopies in the subKelvin temperature range were performed on superconducting Silicon epilayers doped with Boron in the atomic percent range. The resulting local differential conductance behaved as expected for a homogeneous superconductor, with an energy gap dispersion below +/- 10%. The spectral shape, the amplitude and temperature dependence of the superconductivity gap follow the BCS model, bringing further support to the hypothesis of a hole pairing mechanism mediated by phonons in the weak coupling limit.
We investigate the macroscopic quantum tunneling of fermionic superfluids in the two-dimensional BCS-BEC crossover by using an effective tunneling energy which explicitly depends on the condensate fraction and the chemical potential of the system. We compare the mean-field effective tunneling energy with the beyond-mean-field one finding that the mean-field tunneling energy is not reliable in the BEC regime of the crossover. Then we solve the Josephson equations of the population imbalance and the relative phase calculating the frequency of tunneling oscillation both in the linear regime and i…
We study the quantum charge noise and measurement properties of the double Cooper pair resonance point in a superconducting single-electron transistor (SSET) coupled to a Josephson charge qubit. Using a density matrix approach for the coupled system, we obtain a full description of the measurement back-action; for weak coupling, this is used to extract the quantum charge noise. Unlike the case of a non-superconducting SET, the back-action here can induce population inversion in the qubit. We find that the Cooper pair resonance process allows for a much better measurement than a similar non-sup…
We use radio-frequency reflectometry to measure quasiparticle tunneling rates in the single-Cooper-pair-transistor. Devices with and without quasiparticle traps in proximity to the island are studied. A $10^2$ to $10^3$-fold reduction in the quasiparticle tunneling rate onto the island is observed in the case of quasiparticle traps. In the quasiparticle trap samples we also measure a commensurate decrease in quasiparticle tunneling rate off the island.
Stochastic switching-current distribution in a graphene-based Josephson junction exhibits a crossover from the classical to quantum regime, revealing the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) of a Josephson phase particle at low temperatures. Microwave spectroscopy measurements indicate a multi-photon absorption process occurring via discrete energy levels in washboard potential well. The crossover temperature for MQT and the quantized level spacing are controlled with the gate voltage, implying its potential application to gate-tunable superconducting quantum bits.
We propose a simple phenomenological theory for quantum tunneling of Cooper pairs based on their boson like nature. Thus it applies in the absence of quasiparticle excitations (fermions), and should be suitable for boson like particles at the low energy regime. Around zero bias voltage our model reveals a rapid increase in tunneling current which rapidly saturates. This manifests as a zero bias conductance peak that strongly depends on the superconductors transition temperature. This low energy tunneling of Cooper pairs could serve as an alternative explanation for a number of tunneling experi…
We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling of two weakly-linked superfluids made of interacting fermionic atoms. We derive atomic Josephson junction equations and find that zero-mode and pi-mode frequencies of coherent atomic oscillations depend on the tunneling coefficient and the sound velocity of the superfluid. By considering a superfluid of ^40K atoms, we calculate these oscillation frequencies in the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate of strongly-bound molecular dimers.
We have carried out systematic Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling (MQT) experiments on Nb/Al-AlO_x/Nb Josephson junctions (JJs) of different areas. Employing on-chip lumped element inductors, we have decoupled the JJs from their environmental line impedances at the frequencies relevant for MQT. This allowed us to study the crossover from the thermal to the quantum regime in the low damping limit. A clear reduction of the crossover temperature with increasing JJ size is observed and found to be in excellent agreement with theory. All junctions were realized on the same chip and were thoroughly chara…
We theoretically investigate ground-state properties of a three-component Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions between different components near a triatomic resonance where bound trimers are about to appear. Using variational equations for in-medium two- and three-body cluster states in three dimensions, we elucidate the competition of pair and triple formations due to the Fermi surface effects. We present the ground-state phase diagram that exhibits transition from a Cooper pair to Cooper triple state and crossover from a Cooper triple to tightly bound trimer state at negative scatter…
We have observed photon-assisted Cooper-pair tunneling in an atomic-scale Josephson junction formed between a superconducting Nb tip and a superconducting Nb sample in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) at 30 mK. High-resolution tunneling spectroscopy data show a zero-bias conduction peak and other sharp sub-gap peaks from coupling of the STM junction to resonances in the electromagnetic environment. The sub-gap peaks respond to incident microwave radiation by splitting into multiple peaks with the position and height depending on the frequency and amplitude of the microwaves. The inter-pea…
Cooper pairing is studied in three dimensions to determine its binding energy for all coupling using a general separable interfermion interaction. Also considered are Cooper pairs (CPs) with nonzero center-of-mass momentum (CMM). A coupling-independent {\it linear} term in the CMM dominates the pair excitation energy in weak coupling and/or high fermion density, while the more familiar quadratic term prevails only in the extreme low-density (i.e., vacuum) limit for any nonzero coupling. The linear-to-quadratic crossover of the CP dispersion relation is analyzed numerically, and is expected to …
A scanning tunneling microscope is used to explore the evolution of electron and Cooper pair transport across single Mn-phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on Pb(111) from tunneling to contact ranges. Normal-metal as well as superconducting tips give rise to a gradual transition of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer energy gap in the tunneling range into a zero-energy resonance close to and at contact. Supporting transport calculations show that in the normal-metal - superconductor junctions this resonance reflects the merging of in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states as well as the onset of Andreev reflecti…
The interaction between propagating microwave fields and Cooper-pair tunneling across a DC voltage-biased Josephson junction can be highly nonlinear. We show theoretically that this nonlinearity can be used to convert an incoming single microwave photon into an outgoing $n$-photon Fock state in a different mode. In this process, the electrostatic energy released in a Cooper-pair tunneling event is transferred to the outgoing Fock state, providing energy gain. The created multi-photon Fock state is frequency entangled and highly bunched. The conversion can be made reflectionless (impedance-matc…
We show that a properly dc-biased Josephson junction in series with two microwave resonators of different frequencies emits photon pairs in the resonators. By measuring auto- and inter-correlations of the power leaking out of the resonators, we demonstrate two-mode amplitude squeezing below the classical limit. This non-classical microwave light emission is found to be in quantitative agreement with our theoretical predictions, up to an emission rate of 2 billion photon pairs per second.
The interlayer tunneling has been studied on high quality Bi-2212 stacks of micron to the submicron lateral size. We found that low temperature and low voltage tunneling I-V characteristics can be self-consistently described by Fermi-liquid model for a d-wave superconductor with a significant contribution from coherent interlayer tunneling. The gap and pseudogap interplay with variation of temperature and magnetic field has been extracted from the I-V characteristics. We consider also the role of charging effects for submicron stacks.
We investigate Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)- Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in a two-band superfluid Fermi gas with an energy shift between the bands. When the intraband coupling in the cold (first) band is fixed as weak, we find that in the case of vanishing interband interaction and in the strong-coupling limit of the hot (second) band the system undergoes a transition to a single-component configuration with the full suppression of the first energy gap and with the full redistribution of particles between bands. For non-vanishing interband interaction we reveal the non-monoto…
Tunneling across superconducting junctions proceeds by a rich variety of processes, which transfer single electrons, Cooper pairs, or even larger numbers of electrons by multiple Andreev reflections. Photon-assisted tunneling combined with the venerable Tien-Gordon model has long been a powerful tool to identify tunneling processes between superconductors. Here, we probe superconducting tunnel junctions including an impurity-induced Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) state by exposing a scanning tunneling microscope with a superconducting tip to microwave radiation. We find that a simple Tien-Gordon descr…
Superconducting fluctuations have proved to be an irreplaceable source of information about microscopic and macroscopic material parameters that could be inferred from the experiment. According to common wisdom, the effect of thermodynamic fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, is to round off all of the sharp corners and discontinuities, which otherwise would have been expected to occur at Tc. Here we report the current spikes due to radiation-induced resonant tunneling of fluctuation Cooper pairs between two superconductors which grow even sharper and…
We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange cou…
We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of slightly overdoped Bi2212 single crystals with Tc = 87 - 90 K in a temperature range between 14 K and 290 K using a break-junction technique. The pseudogap which has been detected above Tc appears at T* = 280 K. The analysis of the spectra shows that there is a contribution to the pseudogap above Tc, which disappears approximately at 110 - 115 K. We associate this contribution with the presence of incoherent Cooper pairs.
Soliton-pair nucleation rates Gamma = A exp(-B) are studied in highly-biased sine-Gordon systems with a local inhomogeneity for both a thermal activation regime and a quantum tunneling regime. It is found that the local inhomogeneity strongly affects the nucleation rates by modifying the bias-dependence of the exponent B. This change in the exponent B is explained as a dimensional crossover caused by the local inhomogeneity. It is also shown that there is another crossover, at which A becomes independent of the system size.
Evidence of a non-thermal magnetic relaxation in the intermediate state of a type-I superconducor is presented. It is attributed to quantum tunneling of interfaces separating normal and superconducting regions. Tunneling barriers are estimated and temperature of the crossover from thermal to quantum regime is obtained from Caldeira-Leggett theory. Comparison between theory and experiment points to tunneling of interface segments of size comparable to the coherence length, by steps of order one nanometer.
The Bloch-oscillating transistor (BOT) is an amplifier that utilizes semiclassical dynamics of states in energy bands under traveling quasimomentum. In a BOT, a single quasiparticle tunneling across a base tunnel junction switches the state of a superconducting tunnel junction to a lower Bloch band, triggering a series of resonant Cooper-pair tunnelings through an emitter Josephson junction (Bloch oscillations). Here, we investigate experimentally and theoretically an alternative realization of this device, based only on superconducting tunnel junctions. We discover new amplification schemes, …
We study a possible superconductivity in quasiperiodic systems, by portraying the issue within the attractive Hubbard model on a Penrose lattice. Applying a real-space dynamical mean-field theory to the model consisting of 4181 sites, we find a superconducting phase at low temperatures. Reflecting the nonperiodicity of the Penrose lattice, the superconducting state exhibits an inhomogeneity. According to the type of the inhomogeneity, the superconducting phase is categorized into three different regions which cross over each other. Among them, the weak-coupling region exhibits spatially extend…
We report on the effect of the frequency-locked transfer of single Cooper pairs in a superconducting single-electron Al transistor embedded in a dissipative environment (on-chip Cr resistor of R = 40 kOhm). The transistor was dc voltage biased, and the harmonic signal of frequency f of several MHz was applied to the gate. Due to the substantial rate of relaxation, the unidirectional transfer of single pairs occurred in each junction once per clock cycle and the current plateaus at I = 2ef were developed in the transistor's I-V curves. The mechanisms (supercurrent, Landau-Zener tunneling, quasi…
We present a method to identify distinct tunneling modes in tunable superconducting tunnel junction composed of superconducting tip and sample in scanning tunneling microscope. Combining the measurement of the relative decay constant of tunneling current extracted from I-V-z spectroscopy with its statistical analysis over the atomic disorders in the sample surface, we identified the crossover of tunneling modes between single quasiparticle tunneling, multiple Andreev reflection, and Josephson tunneling with respect to the bias voltage. The method enables one to determine the particular tunneli…
We study adiabatic charge transfer in a superconducting Cooper pair pump, focusing on the influence of current measurement on coherence. We investigate the limit where the Josephson coupling energy $E_J$ between the various parts of the system is small compared to the Coulomb charging energy $E_C$. In this case the charge transferred in a pumping cycle $Q_P \sim 2e$, the charge of one Cooper pair: the main contribution is due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling. We are particularly interested in the quantum correction to $Q_P$, which is due to coherent tunneling of pairs across the pump and wh…
We perform a detailed study of temperature, bias and doping dependance of interlayer transport in the layered high temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. We observe that the shape of interlayer characteristics in underdoped crystals exhibit a remarkable crossover at the superconducting transition temperature: from thermal activation-type at $T>T_c$, to almost $T-$independent quantum tunneling-type, at $T<T_c$. Our data indicates that the interlayer transport mechanism may change with doping: from the conventional single quasiparticle tunneling in overdoped, to a progressivel…
We have observed the effect of the Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference on the spectrum of a superconducting system containing a symmetric Cooper pair box (CPB) and a large inductance. By varying the charge $n_{g}$ induced on the CPB island, we observed oscillations of the device spectrum with the period $Δn_{g}=2e$. These oscillations are attributed to the charge-controlled AC interference between the fluxon tunneling processes in the CPB Josephson junctions. Total suppression of the tunneling (complete destructive interference) has been observed for the charge $n_{g}=e(2n+1)$. The CPB in this r…
We study macroscopic quantum tunneling of interfaces separating normal and superconducting regions in type-I superconductors. Mathematical model is developed, that describes dissipative quantum escape of a two-dimensional manifold from a planar potential well. It corresponds to, e.g., a current-driven quantum depinning of the interface from a grain boundary or from artificially manufactured pinning layer. Effective action is derived and instantons of the equations of motion are investigated. Crossover between thermal activation and quantum tunneling is studied and the crossover temperature is …
We investigate the specific heat at constant volume $C_V$ in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, we show that this thermodynamic quantity is sensitive to the stability of preformed Cooper pairs. That is, while $C_V(T\gesim T_{\rm c})$ in the unitary regime is remarkably enhanced by {\it metastable} preformed Cooper pairs or pairing fluctuations, it is well described b…
From measurements of the c-axis I-V characteristics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+delta} (Bi-2212) mesas we obtain the field dependence (H || c) of the quasiparticle (QP) conductivity, sigma_q(H,T), and of the Josephson critical current density, J_c(H,T). The quasiparticle conductivity sigma_q(H) increases sharply with H and reaches a plateau at 0.05 T <H< 0.3 T. We explain such behavior by the dual effect of supercurrents around vortices. First, they enhance the QP DOS, leading to an increase of sigma_q with H at low H and, second, they enhance the scattering rate for…
We investigate the crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state of weakly-bound Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) of strongly-bound molecular dimers in a gas of ultracold atoms loaded on a two-dimensional optical lattice. By using the the mean-field BCS equations of the emerging Hubbard model and the concept of off-diagonal-long-range-order for fermions we calculate analytically and numerically the pair binding energy, the energy gap and the condensate fraction of Cooper pairs as a function of interaction strength and filling fractor of atoms in the lattice at zero…
We present GW based self-energy calculations for the state of coexisting spin-density wave and d-wave superconductivity in a series of cuprate superconductors. In these systems, the spin resonance spectrum exhibits the typical `hour-glass' form, whose upward and downward dispersion branches come from the gapped spin-wave and magnetic scattering of Cooper pairs, respectively. We show that the crossover between these two different dispersion features leads to an abrupt change in slope in the quasiparticle self-energy, and hence the low-energy kink commences in the single-particle quasiparticle s…
For the Cooper/BCS model interaction in superconductors (SCs) it is shown: a) how BCS-Bose crossover picture transition temperatures Tc, defined self-consistently by both the gap and fermion-number equations, require unphysically large couplings to differ significantly from the Tc of ordinary BCS theory defined without the number equation since here the chemical potential is assumed equal to the Fermi energy; how although ignoring either hole- or electron-Cooper-pairs in the recent "complete boson-fermion model": b) one obtains the precise BCS gap equation for all temperatures T, but c) only h…
The evidence for macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in Josephson junctions at low temperatures has been reassessed. Swept bias escape distributions have been modeled with an algorithm-based simulation and the results compared with data from representative published experiments. Signatures expected of a crossover to MQT are not found in the analyzed data.
The main purpose of this brief review is to present a sketch of the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity based mainly on tunneling measurements in cuprates. In the review, we shall mostly discuss tunneling spectroscopy in Bi2212. Analysis of the data shows that the Cooper pairs in cuprates are topological excitations (e.g. quasi-one dimensional bisolitons, discrete breathers etc.), and the phase coherence among the Cooper pairs appears due to spin fluctuations.
Electrons and holes in a semiconductor form hydrogen-atom-like bound states, called excitons. At high electron-hole densities the attractive Coulomb force becomes screened and excitons can no longer exist. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory predicts that at such high densities co-operative many-body effects can at low temperatures induce a bound state, an electron-hole Cooper pair, comparable to an electron-electron Cooper pair in a superconductor. Here we report the first observation of preformed electron-hole Cooper pairs in a semiconductor. By measuring stimulated emission from a dense electr…
We investigate the vortex lattice and vortex bound states in CsFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) under various magnetic fields. A possible structural transition or crossover of vortex lattice is observed with the increase of magnetic field, i.e., the vortex lattice changes from a distorted hexagonal lattice to a distorted tetragonal one at the magnetic field near 0.5 T. It is found that a mixture of stripelike hexagonal and square vortex lattices emerges in the crossover region. The vortex bound state is also observed in the vortex center. The…
The BCS-to-BEC crossover, as well as the nature of Cooper pairs, in a superconducting and Fermi superfluid medium is studied from the exact ground state wavefunction of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. As the strength of the interaction increases, the ground state continuously evolves from a mixed-system of quasifree fermions and pair resonances (BCS), to pair resonances and quasibound molecules (pseudogap), and finally to a system of quasibound molecules (BEC). A single unified scenario arises where the Cooper-pair wavefunction has a unique functional form. Several exact analytic expressions, suc…
We solve the Cooper problem in a cuprate lattice by utilizing a three-band model. We determine the ground state of a Cooper pair for repulsive on-site interactions, and demonstrate that the corresponding wave function has an orbital $d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry. We discuss the influence of next-nearest-neighbor tunneling on the Cooper pair solution, in particular the necessity of next-nearest-neighbor tunneling for having $d$-wave pairs for hole-doped systems. We also propose experimental signatures of the $d$-wave Cooper pairs for a cold-atom system in a cuprate lattice.
The periodic response of a metallic or a superconducting ring to an external magnetic flux is one of the most evident manifestations of quantum mechanics. It is generally understood that the oscillation period hc/2e in the superconducting state is half the period hc/e in the metallic state, because the supercurrent is carried by Cooper pairs with a charge 2e. On the basis of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory we discuss, in which cases this simple interpretation is valid and when a more careful analysis is needed. In fact, the knowledge of the oscillation period of the current in the ring pr…
We investigate the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a relativistic superfluid within a boson-fermion model. The model includes, besides the fermions, separate bosonic degrees of freedom, accounting for the bosonic nature of the Cooper pairs. The crossover is realized by tuning the difference between the boson mass and boson chemical potential as a free parameter. The model yields populations of condensed and uncondensed bosons as well as gapped and ungapped fermions throughout the crossover region for arbitrary temperatures. Moreover…
The ability to generate single photons is not only an ubiquitous tool for scientific exploration with applications ranging from spectroscopy and metrology to quantum computing, but also an important proof of the underlying quantum nature of a physical process. In the microwave regime, emission of anti-bunched radiation has so far relied on coherent control of Josephson qubits, where precisely calibrated microwave pulses are needed, and the achievable bandwidth is limited by the anharmonicity of the qubit. Here, we demonstrate the operation of a bright on-demand source of quantum microwave radi…
We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to elucidate the Cooper pairing of the iron pnictide superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2. By a cold-cleaving technique, we obtain atomically resolved termination surfaces with different layer identities. Remarkably, we observe that the low-energy tunneling spectrum related to superconductivity has an unprecedented dependence on the layer-identity. By cross-referencing with the angle-revolved photoemission results and the tunneling data of LiFeAs, we find that tunneling on each termination surface probes superconductivity through selecting di…
We build a holographic model for the pairing fluctuation pseudogap phase in fermionic high temperature superconductivity/superfluidity based on the BCS-BEC crossover scenario. The pseudogap originates from incoherent Cooper pairing and has been observed in recent cold atom experiments. The strength of Cooper pairing and hence the BCS-BEC crossover is controlled by an effective 4-Fermi interaction and we argue that the double-trace deformation for charged scalar operator is a close analog in large N field theories. We employ the double-trace deformed Abelian Higgs model of holographic supercond…
Feshbach scattering resonances are being utilized in atomic gases to explore the entire crossover region from a Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of composite bosons to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) of Cooper pairs. Several theoretical descriptions of the crossover have been developed based on an assumption that the fermionic interactions are dependent only on the value of a single microscopic parameter, the scattering length for the interaction of fermion particles. Such a picture is not universal, however, and is only applicable to describe a system with an energetically broad Feshbach re…
Very recently quasi two-dimensional (2D) systems made of attractive fermionic alkali-metal atoms with a widely tunable interaction due to Fano-Feshbach resonances have been realized. In this way it has been achieved the 2D crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer regime of weakly-interacting Cooper pairs to the Bose-Einstein condensate regime strongly bound dimers. These experiments pave the way to the investigation of 2D strongly-interacting attractive fermions during the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition from a low-temperature superfluid phase characterized by quasi-conden…
The physics of the crossover between weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and strong-coupling Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) limits gives a unified framework of quantum bound (superfluid) states of interacting fermions. This crossover has been studied in the ultracold atomic systems, but is extremely difficult to be realized for electrons in solids. Recently, the superconducting semimetal FeSe with a transition temperature $T_{\rm c}=8.5$ K has been found to be deep inside the BCS-BEC crossover regime. Here we report experimental signatures of preformed Cooper pairing in FeSe below $T…
