Electrons and holes in a semiconductor form hydrogen-atom-like bound states, called excitons. At high electron-hole densities the attractive Coulomb force becomes screened and excitons can no longer exist. Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory predicts that at such high densities co-operative many-body effects can at low temperatures induce a bound state, an electron-hole Cooper pair, comparable to an electron-electron Cooper pair in a superconductor. Here we report the first observation of preformed electron-hole Cooper pairs in a semiconductor. By measuring stimulated emission from a dense electron-hole gas in ZnO, we have explored both the crossover from the electron-hole plasma to the preformed Cooper-pair regime, and the crossover from the exciton to the preformed Cooper-pair regime.
For high-Tc superconductors, clarifying the role and origin of the pseudogap is essential for understanding the pairing mechanism. Among the various models describing the pseudogap, the preformed Cooper pair model is a potential candidate. Therefore, we present experimental evidence for the preformed Cooper pair model by studying the pseudogap spectrum observed in the optical conductivity of a Ca10(Pt4As8)(Fe2As2)5 (Tc = 34.6 K) single crystal. We observed a clear pseudogap structure in the optical conductivity and observed its temperature dependence. In the superconducting (SC) state, one SC …
We study conditions for the emergence of the preformed Cooper pairs in materials hosting flat bands. As a particular example, we consider a semimetal, with a pair of three-band crossing points at which a flat band intersects with a Dirac cone, and focus on the s-wave intervalley pairing channel. The nearly dispersionless nature of the flat band at strong attraction between electrons promotes local Cooper pair formation so that the system may be modeled as an array of superconducting grains. Due to dispersive bands, Andreev scattering between the grains gives rise to the global phase-coherent s…
Angle-resolved photoemission on underdoped La$_{1.895}$Sr$_{0.105}$CuO$_4$ reveals that in the pseudogap phase, the dispersion has two branches located above and below the Fermi level with a minimum at the Fermi momentum. This is characteristic of the Bogoliubov dispersion in the superconducting state. We also observe that the superconducting and pseudogaps have the same d-wave form with the same amplitude. Our observations provide direct evidence for preformed Cooper pairs, implying that the pseudogap phase is a precursor to superconductivity.
In most superconductors the transition to the superconducting state is driven by the binding of electrons into Cooper-pairs. The condensation of these pairs into a single, phase coherent, quantum state takes place concomitantly with their formation at the transition temperature, $T_c$. A different scenario occurs in some disordered, amorphous, superconductors: Instead of a pairing-driven transition, incoherent Cooper pairs first pre-form above $T_c$, causing the opening of a pseudogap, and then, at $T_c$, condense into the phase coherent superconducting state. Such a two-step scenario implies …
In order to obtain information about the internal structure of the preformed pairs in the pseudogap state of high $T_c$ superconductors, we calculate the propagator of a singlet pair with center of mass coordinate $\mathbf{r}$, and relative distance $\pmbρ$, by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, representing the sum over repeated two-particle scattering events due to a distance dependent attraction. We define then a ``pair structure function'' $g_{P}(\mathbf{P},\pmbρ) $ that depends on the internal distance $\pmbρ$ between the partners and on the momentum $\mathbf{P}$ of the pair. We calcula…
Superconductivity arises from two distinct quantum phenomena: electron pairing and long-range phase coherence. In conventional superconductors, the two quantum phenomena generally take place simultaneously, while the electron pairing occurs at higher temperature than the long-range phase coherence in the underdoped high-Tc cuprate superconductors. Recently, whether electron pairing is also prior to long-range phase coherence in single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO3 substrate is under debate. Here, by measuring Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate, we unambiguously reveal a pseudoga…
The most profound effect of disorder on electronic systems is the localization of the electrons transforming an otherwise metallic system into an insulator. If the metal is also a superconductor then, at low temperatures, disorder can induce a dramatic transition from a superconducting into an insulating state. An outstanding question is whether the route to insulating behavior proceeds via the direct localization of Cooper pairs or, alternatively, by a two-step process in which the Cooper pairing is first destroyed followed by the standard localization of single electrons. Here we address thi…
We present a theory of superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and analyze the superconducting phase diagram in presence of the magnetic field. Namely, we consider a model of a granular array hosting localized states, which are hybridized via the delocalized fermions in the inter-grain regions. We study a strong coupling situation when the interactions lead to an incoherent state with preformed Cooper pairs inside the grains. The Andreev scattering among different grains manifests itself through the global phase-coherent superconducting state at lower temperatures. We demonst…
We investigate the specific heat at constant volume $C_V$ in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, we show that this thermodynamic quantity is sensitive to the stability of preformed Cooper pairs. That is, while $C_V(T\gesim T_{\rm c})$ in the unitary regime is remarkably enhanced by {\it metastable} preformed Cooper pairs or pairing fluctuations, it is well described b…
We discuss the phase coherence which emanates from the ladder-like proximity effect between a ``weak superconductor'' with preformed bosonic pairs (here, a single-chain Luther-Emery liquid with superconducting correlations that decay approximately as $x^{-1}$) and a Fermi gas with unpaired fermions. Carefully studying tunneling mechanism(s), we show that the boson-mediated Cooper pairing between remaining unpaired electrons results in a quasi long-range superconductivity: Superconducting correlations decay very slowly as $x^{-η}$ with $η\approx 1/2$. This process is reminiscent of the coupling…
A weird electronic state accompanied with an anomalous superconducting precursor and/or exotic orders, called the pseudogap state, arises prior to a superconducting condensate in underdoped cuprates that are situated near Mott transition. Another way to make the system approach the Mott transition is the variation of bandwidth or correlation strength, which gives a new dimension to exploring this exotic state. Here we report nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on layered organic superconductors with half-filled bands whose widths are pressure-tuned near the Mott transition. The system sit…
A preformed-pair model was considered. The quantum disordered phase of the d-wave superconducting state was obtained by turning on an on-site repulsion. The low energy effective theory of the quantum disordered phase was derived, which was found to be qualitatively equivalent to the low energy effective theory of the SU(2) slave-boson theory in the staggered-flux phase. Many physical properties of the disordered phase at low energies were obtained, such as the Mott insulator property at zero doping, spin gap and low superfluid density at low doping.
Transport studies seem to be one of the strongest lines of support for a preformed pair approach to the pseudogap. In this paper we provide a fresh, physically transparent look at two important quantities: the diamagnetic susceptibility and conductivity. We use a three dimensional preformed pair framework which has had some success in the cold Fermi gases and in the process we reconcile recently observed inconsistencies. Specifically, while the preformed pairs in our theory give a large contribution to the diamagnetic susceptibility, the imaginary part of the conductivity is suppressed to zero…
We address those puzzling experiments in underdoped high $T_c$ superconductors which have been associated with normal state "vortices" and show these data can be understood as deriving from preformed pairs with onset temperature $T^* > T_c$. For uncorrelated bosons in small magnetic fields, and arbitrary $T^*/T_c$, we present the exact contribution to \textit{all} transport coefficients. In the overdoped regime our results reduce to those of standard fluctuation theories ($T^*\approx T_c$). Semi-quantitative agreement with Nernst, ac conductivity and diamagnetic measurements is quite reasonabl…
We investigate the properties of a system where the itinerant electrons coexist and interact with the preformed local pairs. Using the nonperturbative continuous unitary transformation technique we show that Andreev-type scattering between these charge carriers gives rise to the enhanced diamagnetic response and is accompanied by appearance of the Drude peak inside the pseudogap regime ω<2Δ_{pg}. Both thes effects are caused above the transition temperature T_c by the short-range superconducting correlations. In fact, the residual diamagnetism has been detected by the torque magnetometry in th…
Using a combination of muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR), inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), we investigated the novel iron-based superconductor with a triclinic crystal structure (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$Pt$_3$As$_8$ (T$_{\rm c}$ = 13 K), containing platinum-arsenide intermediary layers. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from the $μ$SR relaxation-rate measurements indicates the presence of two superconducting gaps, $Δ_\text{1}\ggΔ_\text{2}$. According to our INS measurements, commensurate spin fluctuations are centered at the ($…
We address how the finite frequency real conductivity $σ(ω)$ in the underdoped cuprates is affected by the pseudogap, contrasting the behavior above and below $T_c$. The f-sum rule is analytically shown to hold. Here we presume the pseudogap is associated with non-condensed pairs arising from stronger-than-BCS attraction. This leads to both a Drude and a mid infrared (MIR) peak, the latter associated with the energy needed to break pairs. These general characteristics appear consistent with experiment. Importantly, there is no more theoretical flexibility (phenomenology) here than in BCS theor…
We study the static and dynamic behavior of charge ordering within a d-wave pair pseudogap (pg) scenario. This is addressed using a density-density correlation function derived from the standard pg self energy, $Σ$ and compatible with the longitudinal and transverse sum rules. The broadening factor $γ$ in $Σ$ reflects the breaking of pairs into constituent fermions. We apply this form for $Σ$ (derived elsewhere for high fields) to demonstrate the existence of quantum oscillations in a non-Fermi liquid pg state. Our conclusion is that the pseudogap-induced pairbreaking, via $γ$, allows the unde…
We analyze evolution of the single particle excitation spectrum of the underdoped cuprate superconductors near the anti-nodal region, considering temperatures below and and above the phase transition. We inspect the phenomenological self-energy that reproduces the angle-resolved-photoemission-spectroscopy (ARPES) data and we show that above the critical temperature, such procedure implies a transfer of the spectral weight from the Bogoliubov-type quasiparticles towards the in-gap damped states. We also discuss some possible microscopic arguments explaining this process.
There continues to be enormous interest in the BCS to BEC transition as there still is no exact theory. We recently reported a revealing reinterpretation of the condensed phase Boson-Fermion Model (BFM) by comparing it to a cold atom formulation [1]. While the ground and singly excited states appear to remain continuous in all models we have examined, the collective modes contain a singularity due to a Feshbach resonance (tuned by doping) causing a breakdown of the Migdal theorem. As a result of vertex corrections, there is a fundamental change in the nature of the superconductivity due to the…
We observed an enhancement of the $c$-axis differential conductance around the zero-bias in Au$/$Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (Bi2212) junctions near the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We attribute the conductance enhancement to the Andreev reflection between the surface Cu-O bilayer with suppressed superconductivity and the neighboring superconducting inner bilayer. The continuous evolution from depression to an enhancement of the zero-bias differential conductance, as the temperature approaches $T_c$ from below, points to weakening of the barrier strength of the non-supercond…
The temperature evolution of the proximity effect in Au/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.55}$Sr$_{0.45}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ bilayers was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy. Proximity induced gaps, centered at the chemical potential, were found to persist above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, and up to nearly the pseudogap crossover temperature in both systems. Such independence of the spectra on the details of the normal metal cap layer is incompatible with a density-wave order origin. However, our results can be accounted for by a penetration of …
This paper addresses the long standing and controversial issue of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates. Their superconductivity can be attributed to amphoteric defects associated with vacancy sites in copper oxide planes. A local defect lattice relaxation results in a negative-$U$ energy binding two holes on amphoteric defects in the donor configuration that act as preformed boson pair. Thermodynamic equilibrium between defects in the donor and acceptor configurations stabilizes Fermi energy at the amphoteric defect charge transition state assuring resonant coupling between free holes a…
Recently, the nature of Cooper pairs in the BCS-BEC crossover has regained attention due to the observation of a large fraction of preformed fermion pairs on the BCS side of the Feshbach resonance in ultracold atomic Fermi gases. While several theoretical explanations were proposed, the interpretations are still controversial. The root of the controversy is understanding what represents a Cooper pair in a correlated Fermi system. This paper discusses these issues at the most elementary level.
The idea that preformed Cooper pairs could exist in a superconductor above its zero-resistance state has been explored for unconventional, interface, and disordered superconductors, yet direct experimental evidence is lacking. Here, we use scanning tunneling noise spectroscopy to unambiguously show that preformed Cooper pairs exist up to temperatures much higher than the zero-resistance critical temperature $T_{C}$ in the disordered superconductor titanium nitride, by observing a clear enhancement in the shot noise that is equivalent to a change of the effective charge from 1 to 2 electron cha…
We show how, within a preformed pair scenario for the cuprate pseudogap, the nodal and antinodal responses in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy necessarily have very different temperature $T$ dependences. We examine the behavior and the contrasting $T$ dependences for a range of temperatures both below and above $T_c$. Our calculations are based on a fully microscopic $T$-matrix approach for addressing pairing correlations in a regime where the attraction is stronger than BCS and the coherence length is anomalously short. Previously, the distinct nodal and anti-nodal responses have pro…
The preformed-pairs theory of pseudogap physics in high-$T_C$ superconductors predicts a nonanalytic $T$-dependence for the $ab$-plane superfluid fraction, $ρ_S$, at low temperatures in underdoped cuprates. We report high-precision measurements of $ρ_S(T)$ on severely underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and Y$_{0.8}$Ca$_{0.2}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films. At low $T$, $ρ_S$ looks more like $1 - T^2$ than $1 - T^{3/2}$, in disagreement with theory.
Deviations from Fermi liquid behavior are well documented in the normal state of the cuprate superconductors, and some of these differences seem to be related to pre-transitional features appearing at temperatures above T$_c$. The observation of a pseudogap, e.g. in ARPES experiments, is a familiar example of this physics. One potential explanation for this behaviour involves preformed pairs with finite lifetimes existing in the normal state above T$_c$. In this way two characteristic temperatures can be established. A higher one T$^*$ at which pairs begin to form and the actual T$_c$ at which…
In a flat Bloch band the kinetic energy is quenched and single particles cannot propagate since they are localized due to destructive interference. Whether this remains true in the presence of interactions is a challenging question because a flat dispersion usually leads to highly correlated ground states. Here we compute numerically the ground state energy of lattice models with completely flat band structure in a ring geometry. We find that the energy as a function of the magnetic flux threading the ring has a half-flux quantum $Φ_0/2 = hc/(2e)$ period, indicating that only bound pairs of pa…
Egorov and March plotted the product of resistivity and the copper spin-lattice relaxation time vs. temperature for yttrium barium copper oxide finding a minimum at temperature T greater than the superconducting temperature, heralding an electronic phase change which can be interpreted as the formation of a "preformed" pair. In this context we propose a superconducting mechanism based on the notion that the preformed pair is a "soft" boson (a localized, different type of Cooper pair) which dissociates above the classical BKT transition temperature, resulting in two circular charge density wave…

We propose that, if the pseudogap state in the cuprate superconductors can be described in terms of the phase-incoherent preformed pairs, there should exist Andreev reflection from these pairs even above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$. After giving qualitative arguments for this effect, we present more quantitative calculations based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation. Experimental observations of the effects of Andreev reflections above $T_c$---such as an enhanced tunneling conductance below the gap along the copper oxide plane---could provide unambiguous evidence for th…
We demonstrate the rise-and-fall of multiple pseudogaps in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein-condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover in two-band fermionic systems having different pairing strengths in the deep band and in the shallow band. The striking features of this phenomenon are an unusual many-body screening of pseudogap state and the importance of pair-exchange couplings, which induces multiple pseudogap formation in the two bands. The multi-band configuration suppresses pairing fluctuations and the pseudogap opening in the strongly-interacting shallow band at small pair-exchange cou…
Preformed pairs above $T_c$ and the two-gap scenarios are two main proposals for describing the low doping pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates. Very recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments have shown features which were interpreted as evidence for preformed pairs. Here it is shown that those results can be explained also in the context of the two-gap scenario if self-energy effects are considered. The discussion is based on the $d$-CDW theory or the flux phase of the $t-J$ model.
BCS theory describes the formation of Cooper pairs and their instant "Bose condensation" into a superconducting state. Helium atoms are preformed bosons and, in addition to their condensed superfluid state, can also form a quantum solid, lacking phase-coherence. Here we show that the fate of Cooper pairs can be more varied than the BCS or helium paradigms. In copper-oxide d-wave superconductors (dSC) Cooper pairs are intrinsically non-local objects, with both center-of-mass and relative motions. As doping decreases, the center-of mass fluctuations force a correlated dSC into a state with enhan…
Recent scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments in NbN thin disordered superconducting films found an emergent inhomogeneity at the scale of tens of nanometers. This inhomogeneity is mirrored by an apparent dimensional crossover in the paraconductivity measured in transport above the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$. This behavior was interpreted in terms of an anomalous diffusion of fluctuating Cooper pairs, that display a {\em quasi-confinement} (i.e., a slowing down of their diffusive dynamics) on length scales shorter than the inhomogeneity identified by tunnelling experiments.…
Meingast, et al. suggest that in YBCO the pseudogap is associated with preformed pairs. It is shown that in underdoped cuprates there is evidence for two pseudogaps, and superconducting fluctions terminate at the smaller pseudogap.
Cooper pair (CP) binding with both zero and nonzero center-of-mass momenta (CMM) is studied with a set of renormalized equations assuming a short-ranged (attractive) pairwise interfermion interaction. Expanding the associated dispersion relation in 2D in powers of the CMM, in weak-to-moderate coupling a term {\it linear} in the CMM dominates the pair excitation energy, while the quadratic behavior usually assumed in Bose-Einstein (BE)-condensation studies prevails for any coupling {\it only} in the limit of zero Fermi velocity when the Fermi sea disappears, i.e., in vacuum. In 3D this same beh…
The mutual interaction between Cooper pairs is proposed as a mechanism for the superconducting state. Above $T_c$, pre-existing but fluctuating Cooper pairs give rise to the unconventional {\it pseudogap} (PG) state, well-characterized by experiment. At the critical temperature, the pair-pair interaction induces a Bose-like condensation of these preformed pairs leading to the superconducting (SC) state. Below $T_c$, both the condensation energy and the pair-pair interaction $β$ are proportional to the condensate density $N_{oc}(T)$, whereas the usual Fermi-level spectral gap $Δ_p$ is independe…
In conventional superconductors, phonons glue two electrons with opposite spins to form Cooper pairs and condensation of these pairs leads to the superconductivity. Identifying the underlying mechanism of the high temperature superconductivity in cuprates is among the most important problems in physics. Even quarter of a century after the first report of high temperature superconductor by Bednorz and Muller in 1986, there is still no general consensus on the pairing mechanism of superconductivity in these materials. So far, many theories have been developed to explain the exotic properties of …
Ward identities for anisotropic Cooper pairs are derived. These for nonlocal pairs have the same form as those for local pairs by employing the pair propagator with the form factor.
We discuss a close relationship between a quasiparticle on the Bogoliubov Fermi surface and an odd-frequency Cooper pair in a superconductor in which a Cooper pair consisting of two j=3/2 electrons forms the pseudospin-quintet even-parity pair potential with breaking time-reversal symmetry. It has been established in a single-band superconductor that a low-energy quasiparticle below the superconducting gap accompanies an odd-frequency Cooper pair. In this paper, we show that an odd-frequency pair characterized by chirality coexists with a quasiparticle on the Bogoliubov Fermi surface. The symm…
It is generally believed that in a superconducor Cooper pairs are broken at above-critical current region, corresponding to the lost of superconductivity. We suggest that, under some circumstance, Cooper pairs could still exist above critical current, and that dissipation of the system is caused by the scattering of these pairs. The existence of Cooper pairs in this region can be revealed by investigating the temperature dependence of the electrical resistance.
A comment is made on a letter (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 102}, 067001) and a paper (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 83}, 020506) regarding the correct expression of the thermal current vertex for Cooper pairs.
In Part I of this paper a modified BCS mechanism of Cooper pair formation was proposed. The present Part III gives a physical interpretation of this mechanism in terms of spin-flipping processes in superconducting bands.
We have employed a tunable Cooper-pair transistor, the sluice, with radio frequency control to pump current over a resistive circuit. We find that the charge transferred per pumping cycle can be controlled with the resolution of a single Cooper-pair up to hundreds of pairs. The achieved nanoampere current features more than an order of magnitude improvement over the previously reported results and it is close to the theoretical maximum value for the measured sample.
We extend the one-pair Cooper configuration towards Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model of superconductivity by adding one-by-one electron pairs to an energy layer where a small attraction acts. To do it, we solve Richardson's equations analytically in the dilute limit of pairs on the one-Cooper pair scale. We find, through only keeping the first order term in this expansion, that the $N$ correlated pair energy reads as the energy of $N$ isolated pairs within a $N(N-1)$ correction induced by the Pauli exclusion principle which tends to decrease the average pair binding energy when the pair n…
We analyze tunneling of Cooper pairs across voltage biased asymmetric single-Cooper-pair transistors. Also tunneling of Cooper pairs across two capacitively coupled Cooper-pair boxes is considered, when the capacitive coupling and Cooper pair tunneling are provided by a small Josephson junction between the islands. The theoretical analysis is done at subgap voltages, where the current-voltage characteristics depend strongly on the macroscopic eigenstates of the island(s) and their coupling to the dissipative environment. As the environment we use an impedance which satisfies Re[Z]<<R_Q and a f…
This Letter provides the solution to a yet unsolved basic problem of Solid State Physics: the ground state energy of an arbitrary number of Cooper pairs interacting via the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer potential. We here break a 50 year old math problem by analytically solving Richardson-Gaudin equations which give the exact energy of these $N$ pairs via $N$ parameters coupled through $N$ non-linear equations. Our result fully supports the standard BCS result obtained for a pair number equal to half the number of states feeling the potential. More importantly, it shows that the interaction part o…
We discuss odd-frequency Cooper pairs appearing in two-band superconductors by solving the Gor'kov equation analytically. We introduce the equal-time $s$-wave pair potentials as realized in MgB$_2$ and iron pnictides. Although the order parameter symmetry is conventional, the band degree of freedom enriches the symmetry variety of pairing correlations. The hybridization and the asymmetry between the two conduction bands induce odd-frequency pairs as a subdominant pairing correlation in the uniform ground state. To study the magnetic response of odd-frequency Cooper pairs, we analyze the Meissn…
We present the results of numerical study of the phase dynamics of the DC-SQUID with topologically trivial and nontrivial barriers. In our calculations we take into account two components of supperconducting current, Cooper pairs ($2π$-periodic) and Majorana fermions ($4π$-periodic) currents. Magnetic field dependence of return current is presented. The qualitative behavior of this dependence is explained. We show that in case of two component superconducting current the periodicity of magnetic field dependence of return current displaced by Cooper pairs and Majorana fermion ratio over the mag…
