In this paper we prove that the complement to the affine complex arrangement of type \widetilde{B}_n is a K(π, 1) space. We also compute the cohomology of the affine Artin group G of type \widetilde{B}_n with coefficients over several interesting local systems. In particular, we consider the module Q[q^{\pm 1}, t^{\pm 1}], where the first n-standard generators of G act by (-q)-multiplication while the last generator acts by (-t)-multiplication. Such representation generalizes the analog 1-parameter representation related to the bundle structure over the complement to the discriminant hypersurface, endowed with the monodromy action of the associated Milnor fibre. The cohomology of G with trivial coefficients is derived from the previous one.
The aim of this short survey is to give a quick introduction to the Salvetti complex as a tool for the study of the cohomology of Artin groups. In particular we show how a spectral sequence induced by a filtration on the complex provides a very natural and useful method to study recursively the cohomology of Artin groups, simplifying many computations. In the last section some examples of applications are presented.
The result of this paper is the determination of the cohomology of Artin groups of type A_n, B_n and \tilde{A}_{n} with non-trivial local coefficients. The main result is an explicit computation of the cohomology of the Artin group of type B_n with coefficients over the module \Q[q^{\pm 1},t^{\pm 1}]. Here the first (n-1) standard generators of the group act by (-q)-multiplication, while the last one acts by (-t)-multiplication. The proof uses some technical results from previous papers plus computations over a suitable spectral sequence. The remaining cases follow from an application of Shapi…
In this paper we study the mod $2$ cohomology ring of the Grasmannian $\widetilde{G}_{n,3}$ of oriented $3$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We determine the degrees of the indecomposable elements in the cohomology ring. We also obtain an almost complete description of the cohomology ring. This partial description allows us to provide lower and upper bounds on the cup length of $\widetilde{G}_{n,3}$. As another application, we show that the upper characteristic rank of $\widetilde{G}_{n,3}$ equals the characteristic rank of $\widetildeγ_{n,3}$, the oriented tautological bundle over $\widetilde{G}_{n,…
Let W be a finite irreducible Coxeter group and let X_W be the classifying space for G_W, the associated Artin group. If A is a commutative unitary ring, we consider the two local systems L_q and L_q' over X_W, respectively over the modules A[q,q^{-1}] and A[[q,q^{-1}]], given by sending each standard generator of G_W into the automorphism given by the multiplication by q. We show that H^*(X_W,L_q') = H^{*+1}(X_W,L_q) and we generalize this relation to a particular class of algebraic complexes. We remark that H^*(X_W,L_q') is equal to the cohomology with trivial coefficients A of the Milnor fi…
We compute: * the cohomology with group ring coefficients of Artin groups (or actually, of their associated Salvetti complexes), Bestvina-Brady groups, and graph products of groups, * the L^2-Betti numbers of Bestvina-Brady groups and of graph products of groups, * the weighted L^2-Betti numbers of graph products of Coxeter groups. In the case of arbitrary graph products there is an additional proviso: either all factors are infinite or all are finite.(However, for graph products of Coxeter groups this proviso is unnecessary.)
Let G be a compact Lie group. We present two induction theorems for certain generalized G-equivariant cohomology theories. The theory applies to G-equivariant K-theory K_G, and to the Borel cohomology associated to any complex oriented cohomology theory. The coefficient ring of K_G is the representation ring R(G) of G. When G is a finite group the induction theorems for K_G coincide with the classical Artin and Brauer induction theorems for R(G).
We show how the classical notions of cohomology with local coefficients, CW-complex, covering space, homeomorphism equivalence, simple homotopy equivalence, tubular neighbourhood, and spinning can be encoded on a computer and used to calculate ambient isotopy invariants of continuous embeddings $N\hookrightarrow M$ of one topological manifold into another. More specifically, we describe an algorithm for computing the homology $H_n(X,A)$ and cohomology $H^n(X,A)$ of a finite connected CW-complex X with local coefficients in a $\mathbb Zπ_1X$-module $A$ when $A$ is finitely generated over $\math…
We consider two natural embeddings between Artin groups: the group G_{tilde{A}_{n-1}} of type tilde{A}_{n-1} embeds into the group G_{B_n} of type B_n; G_{B_n} in turn embeds into the classical braid group Br_{n+1}:=G_{A_n} of type A_n. The cohomologies of these groups are related, by standard results, in a precise way. By using techniques developed in previous papers, we give precise formulas (sketching the proofs) for the cohomology of G_{B_n} with coefficients over the module Q[q^{+-1},t^{+-1}], where the action is (-q)-multiplication for the standard generators associated to the first n-1 …
In this paper, we compute ${\rm Ext}_{A}^{s}(\widetilde{H}^*(B\mathbb{Z}/p),\mathbb{F}_p)$ for $s\leq 1$. Using this result, we investigate the behavior of $φ_3^{\mathbb{F}_p}$ and $φ_s^{\widetilde{H}^*(B\mathbb{Z}/p)}\ (s\leq1)$ for an odd prime $p$.
In the first part we review some topological and algebraic aspects in the theory of Artin and Coxeter groups, both in the finite and infinite case (but still, finitely generated). In the following parts, among other things, we compute the Schwartz genus of the covering associated to the orbit space for all affine Artin groups. We also give a partial computation of the cohomology of the braid group with non-abelian coefficients coming from geometric representations. We introduce an interesting class of "sheaves over posets", which we call "weighted sheaves over posets", and use them for explici…
A simplicial complex L on n vertices determines a subcomplex T_L of the n-torus, with fundamental group the right-angled Artin group G_L. Given an epimorphism χ\colon G_L\to \Z, let T_L^χbe the corresponding cover, with fundamental group the Artin kernel N_χ. We compute the cohomology jumping loci of the toric complex T_L, as well as the homology groups of T_L^χwith coefficients in a field \k, viewed as modules over the group algebra \k\Z. We give combinatorial conditions for H_{\le r}(T_L^χ;\k) to have trivial \Z-action, allowing us to compute the truncated cohomology ring, H^{\le r}(T_L^χ;\k…
The purpose of this article is to give a characterization of families of expander graphs via right-angled Artin groups. We prove that a sequence of simplicial graphs $\{Γ_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ forms a family of expander graphs if and only if a certain natural mini-max invariant arising from the cup product in the cohomology rings of the groups $\{A(Γ_i)\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ agrees with the Cheeger constant of the sequence of graphs, thus allowing us to characterize expander graphs via cohomology. This result is proved in the more general framework of \emph{vector space expanders}, a novel struc…
Let $Γ$ be a finite connected graph. The (unlabelled) configuration space $UC^n Γ$ of $n$ points on $Γ$ is the space of $n$-element subsets of $Γ$. The $n$-strand braid group of $Γ$, denoted $B_nΓ$, is the fundamental group of $UC^n Γ$. We use the methods and results of our paper "Discrete Morse theory and graph braid groups" to get a partial description of the cohomology rings $H^*(B_n T)$, where $T$ is a tree. Our results are then used to prove that $B_n T$ is a right-angled Artin group if and only if $T$ is linear or $n<4$. This gives a large number of counterexamples to Ghrist's conjecture…
Meyer showed that the signature of a closed oriented surface bundle over a surface is a multiple of $4$, and can be computed using an element of $H^2(\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z}),\mathbb{Z})$. Denoting by $1 \to \mathbb{Z} \to \widetilde{\mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z})} \to \mathsf{Sp}(2g,\mathbb{Z}) \to 1$ the pullback of the universal cover of $\mathsf{ Sp}(2g,\mathbb{R})$, Deligne proved that every finite index subgroup of $\widetilde{\mathsf {Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})}$ contains $2\mathbb{Z}$. As a consequence, a class in the second cohomology of any finite quotient of $\mathsf{Sp}(2g, \mathbb{Z})$ ca…
Let $Γ_n(p)$ be the level-$p$ principal congruence subgroup of $\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Borel-Serre proved that the cohomology of $Γ_n(p)$ vanishes above degree $\binom{n}{2}$. We study the cohomology in this top degree $\binom{n}{2}$. Let $\mathcal{T}_n(\mathbb{Q})$ denote the Tits building of $\text{SL}_n(\mathbb{Q})$. Lee-Szczarba conjectured that $H^{\binom{n}{2}}(Γ_n(p))$ is isomorphic to $\widetilde{H}_{n-2}(\mathcal{T}_n(\mathbb{Q})/Γ_n(p))$ and proved that this holds for $p=3$. We partially prove and partially disprove this conjecture by showing that a natural map $H^{\binom{n}{2}}(Γ…
We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.
In this paper, we study Azumaya algebras and Brauer groups in derived algebraic geometry. We establish various fundamental facts about Brauer groups in this setting, and we provide a computational tool, which we use to compute the Brauer group in several examples. In particular, we show that the Brauer group of the sphere spectrum vanishes, and we use this to prove two uniqueness theorems for the stable homotopy category. Our key technical results include the local geometricity, in the sense of Artin n-stacks, of the moduli space of perfect modules over a smooth and proper algebra, the étale l…
