Strong dense many-spin interactions have been proposed to organize novel orbital dynamics (the Little Effect) for novel chemical and catalytic phenomena. The recent determinations of the relativistic and quantum Hall effects of carriers in graphene under strong magnetic confinement have substantiated the Little Effect. Moreover such nonclassical phenomena under the stronger magnetic confinement of ferro-nanocatalysts are here shown to organize reverse beta processes and possibly pycnonuclear reactions under high temperature and high-pressure conditions. Such processes have implications for reverse beta reactions and nuclear reactions within the interior of the earth and new technologies for carbon nanotube-ferrometal and nanographene-ferrometal composites.
Atomic-scale magnetic nanostructures are promising candidates for future information processing devices. Utilizing external electric field to manipulate their magnetic properties is an especially thrilling project. Here, by careful identifying different contributions of each atomic orbital to the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of the ferromagnetic metal films, we argue that it is possible to engineer both the MAE and the magnetic response to the electric field of atomic-scale magnetic nanostructures. Taking the iron monolayer as a matrix, we propose several interesting iron nanostructures wi…
In this work, we demonstrate a remarkable change of chemical trend of Iron under high pressure that is of great importance for understanding the distribution of elements in the Earth's mantle and core. Using first principles crystal structure search method, we conduct a systematic study of the propensity of p block elements to chemically bind with iron under high pressures ranging from ambient conditions to that of Earth's core. We show that under increasing pressure, iron tends to reverse its chemical nature, changing from an electron donor (reductant) to an electron acceptor, and oxidizes p-…
In this study we investigate magnetic properties, surface morphology and crystal structure in iron nanoclusters electrodeposited on lightly-doped (100) n-type silicon substrates. Our goal is to investigate the spin injection and detection in the Fe/Si lateral structures. The samples obtained under electric percolation were characterized by magnetoresistive and magnetic resonance measurements with cycling the sweeping applied field in order to understand the spin dynamics in the as-produced samples. The observed hysteresis in the magnetic resonance spectra, plus the presence of a broad peak in …
Coordination chemistry relies on harnessing active metal sites within organic matrices. Polynuclear complexes - consisting of organic ligands binding to clusters of several metal atoms are of particular interest, owing to their electronic/magnetic properties and potential for functional reactivity pathways. However, their synthesis remains challenging; only a limited number of geometries and configurations have been achieved. Here, we synthesise - via supramolecular chemistry on a noble metal surface - one-dimensional metal-organic nanostructures composed of terpyridine (tpy)-based molecules c…
Nanostructured Pd-Fe thin films with varied Fe content were prepared by electrodeposition technique from organic electrolytes on Cu and brass substrates. The structure and the magnetic properties of the films were investigated prior to post-deposition annealing. The structure of the Pd1-xFex thin films with x = 0.14, 0.24, and 0.52 was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as a solid solution of iron in palladium face-centered cubic lattice with the (111) orientation of nanograins relatively to the substrate surface. The films with higher iron concent…
Increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) emissions have led to rising global temperatures and climate change. Using earth-abundant metal-oxide catalysts such as Cu$_2$O for reducing CO$_2$ through RWGS reaction seems lucrative. In this work, we have used Cu$_2$O nanostructures and identified its activity, stability, and selectivity for reducing CO$_2$ to carbon monoxide (CO) which can be further hydrogenated to higher hydrocarbons using Fisher Tropsch synthesis. We have observed that the rate of CO$_2$ conversion increases by 4 times and significantly drops at 300 C where the catalyst …
Fe/Au nanoparticles have been chemically synthesized through a reverse micelle reaction and investigated by both conventional and synchrotron based x-ray diffraction and by magnetic and Moessbauer spectral studies. The powder x-ray diffraction patterns reveal both the presence of crystalline alpha-iron and gold and the absence of any crystalline iron oxides or other crystalline products. First-order reversal curves, along with the major hysteresis loops of the Fe/Au nanoparticles have been measured as a function of time in order to investigate the evolution of their magnetic properties. The ir…
Under high pressures, phase transition, as well as deformation twins, are constantly reported in many BCC metals, whose interactions are of fundamental importance to understand strengthen mechanism of these metals under extreme conditions. However, the interactions between twins and phase transition in BCC metals are remain largely unexplored. In this work, interactions between coherent twin boundaries and $α\to ε$ phase transition of iron are investigated using both non- equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and nudge elastic band method. Mechanisms of both twin-assisted phase transition…
The exploration of exchange bias (EB) on the nanoscale provides a novel approach to improving the anisotropic properties of magnetic nanoparticles for prospective applications in nanospintronics and nanomedicine. However, the physical origin of EB is not fully understood. Recent advances in chemical synthesis provide a unique opportunity to explore EB in a variety of iron oxide-based nanostructures ranging from core/shell to hollow and hybrid composite nanoparticles. Experimental and atomistic Monte Carlo studies have shed light on the roles of interface and surface spins in these nanosystems.…

We present a numerical study of the magnetic structure of nanostructured iron fluoride, using the Monte-Carlo-Metropolis simulated annealing technique and a classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a superexchange angle dependence. The parameters are adjusted on experimental results, and the atomic structure and topology taken from a previous atomistic model of grain boundaries in the same system. We find perfect antiferromagnetic crystalline grains and a disordered magnetic configuration (speromagnetic like) at the grain boundary, in agreement with experimental findings. Both the lowest magnetic…
The modification of steel (AISI 316L and AISI 4140) surface morphology and underlying inter-crystalline grains strain due to Xe$^+$ ion bombardment are reported to affect nitrogen diffusion after a pulsed plasma nitriding process. The ion bombardment induces regular nanometric patterns and increases the roughness of the material surface. The strain induced by the noble gas bombardment is observed in depths which are orders of magnitude larger than the projectiles' stopping distance. The pre-bombarded samples show peculiar microstructures formed in the nitrided layers, modifying the in-depth ha…
We report the results of an experimental study of thermal and magnetic properties of nanostructured ferrimagnetic iron oxide composites with graphene and graphite fillers synthesized via the current activated pressure assisted densification. The thermal conductivity was measured using the laser-flash and transient plane source techniques. It was demonstrated that addition of 5 wt. % of equal mixture of graphene and graphite flakes to the composite results in a factor of x2.6 enhancement of the thermal conductivity without significant degradation of the saturation magnetization. The microscopy …
The origin of p-type conductivity and the mechanism responsible for low carrier mobility was investigated in pyrite (FeS2) thin films. Temperature dependent resistivity measurements were performed on polycrystalline and nanostructured thin films prepared by three different methods. Films have a high hole density and low mobility regardless of the method used for their preparation. The charge transport mechanism is determined to be nearest neighbour hopping (NNH) at near room temperature with Mott-type variable range hopping (VRH) of holes via localized states occurring at lower temperatures. D…
Hybridization of semiconducting and magnetic materials into a single heterostructure is believed to be potentially applicable to the design of novel functional spintronic devices. In the present work we report epitaxial stabilization of four magnetically ordered iron oxide phases (Fe3O4, γ-Fe2O3, α-Fe2O3 and most exotic metastable ε-Fe2O3) in the form of nanometer sized single crystalline films on GaN(0001) surface. The epitaxial growth of as many as four distinctly different iron oxide phases is demonstrated within the same single-target Laser MBE technological process on a GaN semiconductor …
A modified Metropolis atomistic simulation is proposed to model the structure of grain boundaries (GBs) and interfaces in ionic nanostructured systems and is applied to the magnetically interesting case of iron trifluoride (FeF3). We chose long-range interatomic potentials adjusted on experimental results, and adapted a previously established Monte Carlo scheme consisting of various modifications of the simulated annealing/ Metropolis algorithm. Atomic structures of twisted and tilted GBs as a function of the relative disorientation of the grains have been achieved yielding close to experiment…
Using a novel protocol for mixing oppositely charged colloids and macromolecules, magnetic clusters and rods are fabricated using 10 nm-iron oxide nanoparticles and polymers. Here, we show that as the dispersions undergo the so-called desalting transition, spherical clusters in the range 100 nm - 1 μm form spontaneously upon dialysis or dilution. With a magnetic field applied during the dialysis, a one-dimensional growth of the aggregates is initiated, resulting in the formation of 1 - 100 μm rods of average diameter 200 nm. In this paper, we demonstrate that the nanostructured rods have inher…
The orbital and spin magnetic properties of iron inside transforming metallic and semiconducting 1D carbon nanotube hybrids are studied by means of local x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and bulk superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements. Nanotube hybrids are initially ferrocene filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) of different metallicities. After a high temperature nanochemical reaction ferrocene molecules react with each other to form iron nano clusters. We show that the ferrocenes molecular orbitals interact differently with the SWCNT of different me…
Recent experiments have shown that, in agreement with previous theoretical predictions, superconductivity in metallic nanostructures can be enhanced with respect to the bulk limit. Motivated by these results we study finite size effects (FSE) in an iron-pnictide superconductor. For realistic values of the bulk critical temperature Tc ~ 20-50K, we find that, in the nanoscale region L ~ 10 nm, Tc(L) has a complicated oscillating pattern as a function of the system size L. A substantial enhancement of Tc with respect to the bulk limit is observed for different boundary conditions, geometries and …
Neutron irradiation induces in steels nanostructural changes, which are at the origin of the mechanical degradation that these materials experience during operation in nuclear power plants. Some of these effects can be studied by using as model alloy the iron-carbon system. The Object Kinetic Monte Carlo technique has proven capable of simulating in a realistic and quantitatively reliable way a whole irradiation process. We have developed a model for simulating Fe-C systems using a physical description of the properties of vacancy and self-interstitial atom (SIA) clusters, based on a selection…
The continuous reduction of magnetic units to ultra small length scales inspires efforts to look for a suitable means of controlling magnetic states. In this study we show two surface charge alteration techniques for tuning the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) of ferromagnetic layers separated by paramagnetic spacers. Our study reveals that already a modest amount of extra charge can switch the mutual alignment of the magnetization from anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic or vice verse. We also propose adsorption of alkali metals as an alternative way of varying the electronic and chemical p…

Additionally, atomic-resolution Z-contrast imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) have been used to study d…
The inherent existence of multi phases in iron oxide nanostructures highlights the significance of them being investigated deliberately to understand and possibly control the phases. Here, the effects of annealing at 250 0C with a variable duration on the bulk magnetic and structural properties of high aspect ratio bi-phase iron oxide nanorods with ferrimagnetic Fe3O4 and antiferromagnetic alpha-Fe2O3 is explored. Increasing annealing time under a free flow of oxygen enhanced the alpha-Fe2O3 volume fraction, and improved the crystallinity of the Fe3O4 phase, identified in changes in the magnet…
We have investigated the unidirectional spin wave heat conveyer effect in sub-micron thick yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films using lock-in thermography (LIT). Although the effect is small in thin layers this technique allows us to observe asymmetric heat transport by magnons which leads to asymmetric temperature profiles differing by several mK on both sides of the exciting antenna, respectively. Comparison of Damon-Eshbach and backward volume modes shows that the unidirectional heat flow is indeed due to non-reciprocal spin-waves. Because of the finite linewidth, small asymmetries can still be …
Magnetite (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$), an archetypal transition metal oxide, has been used for thousands of years, from lodestones in primitive compasses[1] to a candidate material for magnetoelectronic devices.[2] In 1939 Verwey[3] found that bulk magnetite undergoes a transition at T$_{V}$ $\approx$ 120 K from a high temperature "bad metal" conducting phase to a low-temperature insulating phase. He suggested[4] that high temperature conduction is via the fluctuating and correlated valences of the octahedral iron atoms, and that the transition is the onset of charge ordering upon cooling. The Verwey tr…
On the way to advance the sensing technology, various strategies based on the nano-materials have been introduced to improve the performance of the gas sensors. In this study, we have introduced a facile fabrication procedure for annealing hematite to monitor ethanol gas. Due to large specific area of this conductive platform, more available target molecules (ethanol gas) are detected. To construct this platform, initially, a large scale well-separated iron oxide (hematite) nanostructures are created via an annealing process. The morphology of the nanostructure is optimized through annealing t…

We observe a thermally induced spontaneous magnetization reversal of epitaxial ferromagnet/antiferromagnet heterostructures under a constant applied magnetic field. Unlike any other magnetic system, the magnetization spontaneously reverses, aligning anti-parallel to an applied field with decreasing temperature. We show that this unusual phenomenon is caused by the interfacial antiferromagnetic coupling overcoming the Zeeman energy of the ferromagnet. A significant temperature hysteresis exists, whose height and width can be tuned by the field applied during thermal cycling. The hysteresis orig…
Time-resolved x-ray diffraction has been used to measure the low-temperature thermal transport properties of a Pt/Gd3Fe5O12//Gd3Ga5O12 metal/oxide heterostructure relevant to applications in spin caloritronics. A pulsed femtosecond optical signal produces a rapid temperature rise in the Pt layer, followed by heat transport into the Gd3Fe5O12 (GdIG) thin film and the Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG) substrate. The time dependence of x-ray diffraction from the GdIG layer was tracked using an accelerator-based femtosecond x-ray source. The ultrafast diffraction measurements probed the intensity of the GdIG (1 -1 …
Thickness modulation at the edges of nanostructured magnetic thin films is shown to have important effects on their perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Thin film wires with tapered edges were made from [Co/Pd]20 multilayers or L10-FePt films using liftoff with a double layer resist. The effect of edge taper on the reversal process was studied using magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic modeling. In [Co/Pd]20 the anisotropy was lower in the tapered edge regions which switched at a lower reverse field compared to the center of the wire. The L10-FePt wires showed opposite behavior with the t…
Using \emph{ab initio} alloy theory formulated within the exact muffin-tin orbitals theory in combination with the coherent potential approximation, we investigate the ideal tensile strength (ITS) in the $[001]$ direction of bcc ferro-/ferrimagnetic (FFM) and paramagnetic (PM) Fe$_{1-x}M_{x}$ ($M=$ Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, or Ni) random alloys. The ITS of ferromagnetic (FM) Fe is calculated to be $12.6$\,GPa, in agreement with available data, while the PM phase turns out to posses a significantly lower value of $0.7\,$GPa. Alloyed to the FM matrix, we predict that V, Cr, and Co increase the ITS of F…
