We study the interface propagation in superconductors by means of a variational method. We compute the lower and upper bounds for which the planar front speed propagation is valid. To take into account delay or memory effects in the front propagation, an hyperbolic differential equation is introduced as an extension of the model.
We report the first variational Monte Carlo (VMC) study of the iron-based superconductors. We use realistic band structures, and the ordering instabilities/variational ansatzs are suggested by previous functional renormalization group calculations. We examine antiferromagnetism, superconducting pairing, normal state fermi surface distortion, and orbital order in the antiferromagnetic state.
Through variational Monte Carlo calculation on Gutzwiller projected wave functions, we study the quasiparticle(qp) weight for adding and removing an electron from a high temperature superconductor. We find the qp weight is particle-hole symmetric at sufficiently low energy. We propose to use the tunneling asymmetry as a tool to study the mechanism of electron incoherence in high temperature superconductors.
A Gutzwiller-type variational wave function is proposed for the neutron resonance mode in the cuprate superconductors. An efficient re-weighting technique is devised to perform variational Monte Carlo simulation on the proposed wave function which is composed of linearly superposed Gutzwiller projected Slater determinants. The calculation, which involves no free parameter, predicts qualitatively correct behavior for both the energy and the spectral weight of the resonance mode as functions of doping.
A simple variational model is proposed to analyze the superconducting state in long cylindrical type-II superconductor placed in the external magnetic field. In the framework of this model, it is possible to solve the Ginzburg-Landau equations for the states with axially symmetric distributions of the order parameter. Phase transitions between different superconducting states are studied in the presence of external magnetic field and an equilibrium phase diagram of thin cylinder is obtained. The lower critical field of the cylindrical type-II superconductor with arbitrary values of radius and …
Similar evolutionary variational inequalities appear as convenient formulations for continuous models for sandpile growth, magnetization of type-II superconductors, and evolution of some other dissipative systems characterized by the multiplicity of metastable states, long-range interactions, avalanches, and hysteresis. The origin of this similarity is that these are quasistationary models of equilibrium in which the multiplicity of metastable states is a consequence of a unilateral condition of equilibrium (critical-state constraint). Existing variational formulations for critical-state model…
We present a method for characterizing the propagation of the magnetic flux in an artificially drilled bulk high-temperature superconductor (HTS) during a pulsed-field magnetization. As the magnetic pulse penetrates the cylindrical sample, the magnetic flux density is measured simultaneously in 16 holes by means of microcoils that are placed across the median plane, i.e. at an equal distance from the top and bottom surfaces, and close to the surface of the sample. We discuss the time evolution of the magnetic flux density in the holes during a pulse and measure the time taken by the external m…
We study flux penetration in a disordered type II superconductor by simulations of interacting vortices, using a Monte Carlo method for vortex nucleation. Our results show that a detailed description of the nucleation process yields a correction to the scaling laws usually associated with flux front invasion. We propose a simple model to account for these corrections.
In pure anisotropic or layered superconductors thermal fluctuations induce a van der Waals attraction between flux lines. This attraction together with the entropic repulsion has interesting consequences for the low field phase diagram; in particular, a first order transition from the Meissner phase to the mixed state is induced. We introduce a new variational approach that allows for the calculation of the effective free energy of the flux line lattice on the scale of the mean flux line distance, which is based on an expansion of the free energy around the regular triangular Abrikosov lattice…
We present the results of numerical analysis of a model of normal zone propagation in coated conductors. The main emphasis is on the effects of increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer on the speed of normal zone propagation, the maximum temperature rise inside the normal zone, and the stability margins. We show that with increasing contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the maximum temperature inside the normal zone decreases, and stability margins shrink. This may have an overall beneficial effect on quench protection qualit…
Similar evolutionary variational inequalities appear as convenient formulations for continuous quasistationary models for sandpile growth, formation of a network of lakes and rivers, magnetization of type-II superconductors, and elastoplastic deformations. We outline the main steps of such models derivation and try to clarify the origin of this similarity. New dual variational formulations, analogous to mixed variational inequalities in plasticity, are derived for sandpiles and superconductors.
We study s-wave Cooper pairing in heavy-fermion systems. We analyze the periodic Anderson model by means of the variational cluster approach (VCA) focusing on the interorbital Cooper pairing between a conduction electron ($c$ electron) and an $f$ electron, called the "$c$-$f$ pairing." It is shown that the s-wave superconductivity appears coexisting with long-range antiferromagnetic order when electrons or holes are doped into the system at half filling. The antiferromagnetic order vanishes when the doping concentration exceeds a certain critical value, leading to a pure s-wave superconducting…
We study the interaction between the vortices in multi components superconductors based on the Jacobs and Rebbi variation method using Ginzburg-Landau theory. With one condensation, we get attraction interaction between the vortices for type I and repulsion for type II superconductors. With two condensation states such as Mg B_{2} superconductors the behavior is quite different. There is attraction at large distances and repulsion when the vortices are close to each other. A stability point at distance 2.7/λ_{1} is obtained. In the case of three condensation states such as iron based supercond…
In this paper a new approach to obtain the interface propagation speed in superconductors by means of a variationalme thod is introduced. The results of the approach proposed coincide with the numerical simulations. The hyperbolic differential equations are introduced as an extension of the modelin order to take into account delay effects in the front propagation due to the pinning.
Much research in recent years has focused on using empirical machine learning approaches to extract useful insights on the structure-property relationships of superconductor material. Notably, these approaches are bringing extreme benefits when superconductivity data often come from costly and arduously experimental work. However, this assessment cannot be based solely on an open black-box machine learning, which is not fully interpretable, because it can be counter-intuitive to understand why the model may give an appropriate response to a set of input data for superconductivity characteristi…
We use a variational approach to gain insight into the strongly correlated d-wave superconducting state of the high Tc cuprates at T=0. We show that strong correlations lead to qualitatively different trends in pairing and phase coherence: the pairing scale decreases monotonically with hole doping while the SC order parameter shows a non-monotonic dome. We obtain detailed results for the doping-dependence of a large number of experimentally observable quantities, including the chemical potential, coherence length, momentum distribution, nodal quasiparticle weight and dispersion, incoherent fea…
Stability of the vortex matter -- magnetic flux lines penetrating into the material -- in type-II superconductor films is crucially important for their application. If some vortices get detached from pinning centres, the energy dissipated by their motion will facilitate further depinning, and may trigger an electromagnetic breakdown. In this paper, we review recent theoretical and experimental results on development of the above mentioned thermomagnetic instability. Starting from linear stability analysis for the initial critical-state flux distribution we then discuss a numerical procedure al…
Many large-scale applications require electromagnetic modelling with extensive numerical computations, such as magnets or 3-dimensional (3D) objects like transposed conductors or motors and generators. Therefore, it is necessary to develop computationally time-efficient but still accurate numerical methods. This article develops a general variational formalism for any ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relation and applies it to model coated-conductor coils containing up to thousands of turns, taking magnetization currents fully into account. The variational principle, valid for any 3D situation, restricts th…
We present the numerical solutions for the I-V characteristics, and describe the motion of fluxons in a frustrated Josephson junction made of an unconventional triplet superconductor and an s-wave superconductor. In the inline geometry, and long length limit the moving integer fluxon interacts with the bound fractional fluxon but is not able to change its position or polarity. We observe different modes of multifluxon propagation. In the small length limit the moving fluxon is a combination of the stable solutions that exist in the static case and additional steps are introduced in the I-V dia…
There are five distinct collective modes in the recently discovered p-wave superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$; phase and amplitude modes of the order parameter, clapping mode (real and imaginary), and spin wave. The first two modes also exist in the ordinary s-wave superconductors, while the clapping mode with the energy $\sqrt{2} Δ(T)$ is unique to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and couples to the sound wave. Here we report a theoretical study of the sound propagation in a two dimensional p-wave superconductor. We identified the clapping mode and study its effects on the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities…
Fluorescent Microthermographic Imaging, a method using rare-earth fluorescent coatings with temperature-dependent light emission, was used for quench investigation in high temperature superconductors (HTS). A fluorophore was embedded in a polymer matrix and used as a coating on top of an HTS tape, while being excited with UV light and recorded with a high-speed camera. Simultaneously, the tape was pulsed with high amplitude, short duration DC current, and brought to quench with the help of a localized defect. The joule heating during a quench influences the fluorescent light intensity emitted …
We introduce a new fermionic variational wavefunction, generalizing the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) wavefunction, which is suitable for interacting multi-species spinful systems and sustaining superfluidity. Applications range from quark matter to the high temperature superconductors. A wide class of Hamiltonians, comprising interactions and hybridization of arbitrary momentum dependence between different fermion species, can be treated in a comprehensive manner. This is the case, as both the intra-species and the inter-species interactions are treated on equally rigorous footing, which is…
The magnetic flux dynamics of type-II superconductors within the critical state regime is posed in a generalized framework, by using a variational theory supported by well established physical principles. The equivalence between the variational statement and more conventional treatments, based on the solution of the differential Maxwell equations together with appropriate conductivity laws is shown. Advantages of the variational method are emphasized, focusing on its numerical performance, that allows to explore new physical scenarios. In particular, we present the extension of the so-called d…
The propagation of a nonlinear stationary thermomagnetic wave in superconducting media is qualitatively analyzed in view of the effect of an external magnetic field. The velocity and the thickness of the wave front are estimated. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of an external magnetic field affects the thermomagnetic wave profile only slightly.
Communal pairing in superconductors introduces variational freedom for Cooper pairs to share fermions. Temporal oscillations of the superconducting gap entropically drive communal pairing through the order by disorder phenomenology, stabilising a finite momentum space width of the superconducting gap that increases with interaction strength, creating a smooth evolution from the weakly interacting BCS state to the strongly interacting BEC state.
We present the results of numerical analysis of normal zone propagation in a stack of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ coated conductors which imitates a pancake coil. Our main purpose is to determine whether the quench protection quality of such coils can be substantially improved by increased contact resistance between the superconducting film and the stabilizer. We show that with increased contact resistance the speed of normal zone propagation increases, the detection of a normal zone inside the coil becomes possible earlier, when the peak temperature inside the normal zone is lower, and stability margi…
We investigate flux penetration in a disordered type II superconductor by molecular dynamics simulations of interacting vortices. We focus on the effect of different boundary conditions on the scaling laws for flux front propagation. The numerical results can be interpreted using a coarse grained description of the system in terms of a non-linear diffusion equation. We propose a phenomenological equation for the front position that captures the essential behavior of the system and recovers the scaling exponents.
Computing the electric eddy currents in non-linear materials, such as superconductors, is \E{not straightforward}. The design of superconducting magnets and power applications needs electromagnetic computer modeling, being in many cases a three-dimensional (3D) problem. Since 3D problems require high computing times, novel time-efficient modeling tools are highly desirable. This article presents a novel computing modeling method based on a variational principle. The self-programmed implementation uses an original minimization method, which divides the sample into sectors. This speeds-up the co…
Layered organic superconductors are on the verge of the Mott insulator. We use Gutzwiller variational method to study a Hubbard model including a spin exchange coupling term. The ground state is found to be a Gossamer superconductor at small on-site Coulomb repulsion U and an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at large U, separated by a first order phase transition. Our theory is qualitatively consistent with major experiments reported in organic superconductors.

We use the replica variational method to study the effects of weak point disorder on the variance of the internal field distribution measured in NMR and muon-spin rotation experiments in type-II superconductors. We show that for a simple model there is significant magnetic field dependence which is extrinsic and disorder-driven, and does not have a microscopic (non $s-$wave pairing) origin. Results are presented where we examine the dependence of the magnetic field variance upon the strength of the applied external field.
We theoretically study the propagation of a Terahertz (THz) Gaussian beam through a thin sample of layered superconductor. We consider the beam axis and the superconducting layers to be perpendicular to the sample interface, while the electric field in the beam is perpendicular to the layers. We show that, in such a geometry, the Josephson current between the superconducting layers supports lensing of the beam instead of divergence on the Rayleigh range. Moreover, due to the nonlinearity, the focal length and waist of the transmitted beam depend on the incident beam intensity. These dependence…
Recent experiments have shown that proximity with high-temperature superconductors induces unconventional superconducting correlations in graphene. Here we demonstrate that those correlations propagate hundreds of nanometer, allowing for the unique observation of $d$-wave Andreev pair interferences in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$-graphene devices that behave as a Fabry-Pérot cavity. The interferences show as a series of pronounced conductance oscillations analogous to those originally predicted by de Gennes--Saint-James for conventional metal-superconductor junctions. The present work is pivotal to the …
An analysis with transferred hyperfine field has been performed on the spectra of the $^{115}$In nuclear quadrupole resonance experiments of heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_{3}$PtIn$_{11}$ exhibiting co-occurrence of two successive antiferromagnetic orderings ($T_{\rm N1}$ = 2.2 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 2.0 K) followed by superconducting transition ($T_{\rm c}$ = 0.32 K). The spectral changes at magnetic transition temperatures $T_{\rm N1}$ and $T_{\rm N2}$ indicate that the Ce(2) site has the dominant magnetic contribution, with a small magnetic moment, but not negligible, at the Ce(1) site. Our…
By using variational Monte Carlo method, we examine an effective low-energy model for LaFeAsO derived from an ab initio downfolding scheme. We show that quantum and many-body fluctuations near a quantum critical point largely reduce the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordered moment and the model not only quantitatively reproduces the small ordered moment in LaFeAsO, but also explains the diverse dependence on LaFePO, BaFe2As2 and FeTe. We also find that LaFeAsO is under large orbital fluctuations, sandwiched by the AF Mott insulator and weakly correlated metals. The orbital fluctuations and Dirac-cone…
We investigate the Josephson coupling between two superconductors mediated through an infinite U Anderson impurity, adapting a variational wavefunction approach which has proved successful for the Kondo model. Unlike the Kondo problem, however, a crossing of singlet and doublet state energies may be produced by varying the ratio of Kondo energy to superconducting gap, in agreement with recent work of Clerk and Ambegaokar. We construct the phase diagram for the junction and discuss properties of different phases. In addition, we find the singlet and doublet state energies within a slave boson m…
