We introduce a new fermionic variational wavefunction, generalizing the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) wavefunction, which is suitable for interacting multi-species spinful systems and sustaining superfluidity. Applications range from quark matter to the high temperature superconductors. A wide class of Hamiltonians, comprising interactions and hybridization of arbitrary momentum dependence between different fermion species, can be treated in a comprehensive manner. This is the case, as both the intra-species and the inter-species interactions are treated on equally rigorous footing, which is accomplished via the introduction of a new quantum index attached to the fermions. The index is consistent with known fermionic physics, and allows for heretofore unaccounted for fermion-fermion correlations. We have derived the finite temperature version of the theory, thus obtaining the renormalized quasiparticle dispersion relations, and we discuss the appearance of charge and spin density wave order.
We present numerical solutions for two electron species in 2 dimensions. Based on these solutions, we show that, for equivalent spin up and down fermions, the Fermi occupation factor (per spin) equals 1/2 deep in the Fermi sea. This constitutes a unique experimental prediction of the theory, both for the normal and superfluid states. Interestingly, this result, obtained in the thermodynamic limit, is consistent with Fermi occupation factor (in-)equalities for finite systems of electrons, derived (in a different context) by Borland and Dennis, J. Phys. B {\bf 5}, 7 (1972) and by Altunbulak and Klyachko, Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 282}, 287 (2008).
The t - J Hamiltonian of the spinful hard-core bosonic ring in the Nagaoka limit is solved. The energy spectrum becomes quantized due to presence of spin, where each energy level corresponds to a cyclic permutation state of the spin chains. The ground state is true ferromagnetic when the ring contains N = 2, 3 spinful hard-core bosons; for all other N it is a mixture of the ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic states. This behaviour is different from the fermionic ring, where ground state is true ferromagnetic only for N = 3. It is shown that the intrinsic spin generated gauge fields are analog…
Controlled dynamical probe measurement of complex order parameter fluctuations may reveal its massive collective excitations. Here, we design dynamical quench protocols to excite independently all ten midgap Higgs bosons in the isotropic Balian--Werthamer state of a spinfull $p$-wave superfluid or superconductor. The analysis is based on microscopic equations of motion of an SO(5) pseudospin, an extension of the usual Bloch equation to a five dimensional space. Key to these protocols is the realization of quenches that break the rotational symmetry of the kinetic energy and exploit the irreduc…
We suggest a microscopic model describing the nonlocal ac response of a pair of Majorana states in fermionic superfluids beyond the tunneling approximation. The time-dependent perturbations of quasiparticle transport are shown to excite finite period beating of the wavefunction between the distant Majorana states. We propose an experimental test to measure the characteristic time scales of quasiparticle transport through the pair of Majorana states defining, thus, quantitative characteristics of nonlocality known to be a generic feature of Majorana particles.
We propose to realize second-order topological superconductivity in bilayer spin-polarized Fermi gas superfluids. We focus on systems with intralayer chiral $p$-wave pairing and with tunable interlayer hopping and interlayer interactions. Under appropriate circumstances, an interlayer even-parity $s$- or $d$-wave pairing may coexist with the intralayer $p$-wave. Our model supports localized Majorana zero modes not only at the corners of the system geometry, but also at the terminations of certain one-dimensional defects, such as lattice line defects and superfluid domain walls. We show how suc…
We investigate the system of a heavy impurity embedded in a paired two-component Fermi gas at the crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to a Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid via an extension of the functional determinant approach (FDA). FDA is an exact numerical approach applied to study manifestations of Anderson\textquoteright s orthogonality catastrophe (OC) in the system of a static impurity immersed in an ideal Fermi gas. Here, we extend the FDA to a strongly correlated superfluid background described by a BCS mean-field wavefunction. In contrast to the ideal Fermi g…
