Two-photon decay rates in simple atoms such as hydrogenlike systems represent rather interesting fundamental problems in atomic physics. The sum of the energies of the two emitted photons has to fulfill an energy conservation condition, the decay takes place via intermediate virtual states, and the total decay rate is obtained after an integration over the energy of one of the emitted photons. Here, we investigate cases with a virtual state having an energy intermediate between the initial and the final state of the decay process, and we show that due to non-uniform convergence, only a careful treatment of the singularities infinitesimally displaced from the photon integration contour leads to consistent and convergent results.
Classical variable stars called RR Lyrae stars have pulsating outer envelopes comprised of excited atoms. Here we demonstrate that the qualitative and quantitative properties of RR Lyrae variables and one subclass of their atomic scale constituents: singly-excited helium atoms undergoing transitions between Rydberg states, share a remarkable degree of self-similarity. In terms of masses, radii, oscillation periods, morphologies and kinematics the stellar and atomic analogues obey a simple set of discrete self-similar scaling equations. The concept of stellar/atomic self-similarity may prove us…
We describe a method to observe the dynamics of an excited-state transition in a room temperature atomic vapor using hyperfine quantum beats. Our experiment using cesium atoms consists of a pulsed excitation of the D2 transition, and continuous-wave driving of an excited-state transition from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state to the 7S$_{1/2}$ state. We observe quantum beats in the fluorescence from the 6P$_{3/2}$ state which are modified by the driving of the excited-state transition. The Fourier spectrum of the beat signal yields evidence of Autler-Townes splitting of the 6P$_{3/2}$, F = 5 hyperfine leve…
The emission of light from a multiply excited atomic ensemble is examined and it is shown how symmetric (spin-wave) and non-symmetric states of excitation radiate into spatially separate field modes. This observation has potential application to single photon generation and spin wave entanglement, since in the presence of atomic interactions it can result in isolated single photon emission into a phase-matched field mode.
A two-dimensional model atom is employed to study the ionization behavior of initially excited atomic states in highly-frequent intense laser pulses beyond the dipole approximation. An additional regime of ionization suppression is found at laser intensities where the stabilization effect is expected to break down. The appearance of this effect is due to a strong coupling of the initial wave function to the ground state of the cycle-averaged space-translated ionic potential, followed by a subsequent population transfer to the ground state during the laser pulse turn-off. Non-dipole effects are…
We propose simple analytic, non-orthogonal but selectively orthogonalizable, generalized Laguerre type atomic orbitals, providing clear physical interpretation and near equivalent accuracy with numerical multi-configuration self-consistent field, to atomic configuration interaction calculations. By analyzing the general Eckart theorem we use their simple interpretation, via a thorough investigation in orbital space, to estimate, for the first time (the exact value being, or considered, unknown), an ab-initio energy uncertainty, i.e. proximity to the exact energy, for several excited atomic sta…
Accurate calculations of phase lag associated with coherent control where an excited system decays into more than one product channel have recently been reported for atomic barium in PhysRevA.105.013113 (2022). The present study extends the calculations to make predictions of that observable for another alkaline earth atom, strontium, with a discussion of its spectrum and phase lag for energies between the $Sr^{+}$ $4d_{3/2}$ and $4d_{5/2}$ thresholds. We will explore the physics influenced by the electron correlations of strontium and the long-range Coulomb potential. The behavior of the phas…
We show that the highly excited rovibrational spectra of a diatomic molecule and the closely related slow atomic collision processes contain more systematics and require less parameters to characterize than the Rydberg spectrum of an atom. In the case of a single channel, for example, we show that a single short-range parameter gives a complete description of slow collisions for practically all angular momenta, and covers an energy range of hundreds of millikelvins. The same parameter also describes the highly excited rovibrational spectra in the threshold region, including states of different…
We measure inelastic collisional cross sections for the ground $^3$F$_2$ state and the excited $^3$P$_0$ state of atomic thorium in cold collisions with $^3$He. We determine for Th ($^3$F$_2$) at 800 mK the ratio $γ\approx 500$ of the momentum-transfer to Zeeman relaxation cross sections for collisions with $^3$He. For Th ($^3$P$_0$), we study electronic inelastic processes and find no quenching even after $10^6$ collisions. We also determine the radiative lifetime of Th ($^3$P$_0$) to be $τ> 130$ ms. This great stability of the metastable state opens up the possibility for further study, incl…
On the basis of general theoretical results developed previously in [I. M. Sokolov et al., J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 112, 246 (2011)], we analyze spontaneous decay of a single atom inside cold atomic clouds under conditions when the averaged interatomic separation is less or comparable with the wavelength of quasi resonant radiation. Beyond the decay dynamics we analyze shifts of resonance as well as distortion of the spectral shape of the atomic transition.
We propose a novel method that uses the oscillation of an atomic excited wave packet observed through a pump-probe technique to accurately determine the zero time delay between a pair of ultrashort laser pulses. This physically-based approach provides an easy fix for the intractable problem of synchronizing two different femtosecond laser pulses in a practical experimental environment, especially where an in situ time zero measurement with high accuracy is required.
We study the excitation redistribution from cesium $7\mathrm{P}_{1/2}$ or $7\mathrm{P}_{3/2}$ to neighboring energy levels by Black Body Radiation (BBR) and inter atomic collisions using pump-probe spectroscopy inside a vapor cell. At low vapor densities we measure redistribution of the initial, velocity-selected, atomic excitation by BBR. This preserves the selected atomic velocities allowing us to perform high resolution spectroscopy of the $\mathrm{6D\rightarrow 7F}$ transitions. This transfer mechanism could also be used to perform sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the cesium highly-excited $\ma…
We present numerical values for the self-energy shifts predicted by QED (Quantum Electrodynamics) for hydrogenlike ions (nuclear charge $60 \le Z \le 110$) with an electron in an $n=3$, 4 or 5 level with high angular momentum ($5/2\le j \le 9/2$). Applications include predictions of precision transition energies and studies of the outer-shell structure of atoms and ions.
Coherence relaxation in Na vapor was studied utilizing a pump-probe method with femtosecond pulses. The coherence was created by the pump pulse, which excited the Na atoms to the 4S state. The atoms were further excited to the 7P state by the probe pulse. As a result a coherent UV radiation was emitted by the atoms. This emission was used to study the relaxation of both the 4S-3S and 7P-3S coherent superpositions. The relaxation is mainly due to collisions with the Ar atoms serving as a buffer gas. Coherence relaxation times and collisional cross-sections for the Na-Ar collision pairs were ext…
The processes of electron excitation, capture, and ionization were investigated in proton collisions with atomic hydrogen in the initial $n=1$ and $n=2$ states at impact energies from 1 to 300 keV. The theoretical analysis is based on the close-coupling two-center basis generator method in the semiclassical approximation. Calculated cross sections are compared with previous results which include data obtained from classical-trajectory Monte Carlo, convergent close-coupling, and other two-center atomic orbital expansion approaches. There is an overall good agreement in the capture and excitatio…
We report the implementation of equation-of-motion coupled-cluster (EOMCC) method in the four-component relativistic framework with the spherical atomic potential to generate the excited states from a closed-shell atomic configuration. This theoretical development will be very useful to carry out high precision calculations of varieties of atomic properties in many atomic systems. We employ this method to calculate excitation energies of many low-lying states in a few Ne-like highly charged ions, such as Cr XV, Fe XVII, Co XVIII and Ni XIX ions, and compare them against their corresponding exp…
Interaction between Rydberg atoms can significantly modify Rydberg excitation dynamics. Under a resonant driving field the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction in high-lying states can induce shifts in the atomic resonance such that a secondary Rydberg excitation becomes unlikely leading to the Rydberg blockade effect. In a related effect, off-resonant coupling of light to Rydberg states of atoms contributes to the Rydberg anti-blockade effect where the Rydberg interaction creates a resonant condition that promotes a secondary excitation in a Rydberg atomic gas. Here, we study the light-matter interact…
At high energies, single-photon photodetachment of alkali negative ions populates final states where both the ejected electron and the residual valence electron possess high angular momenta. The photodetached electron interacts strongly with the anisotropic core, and thus the partial cross sections for these channels display non-Wigner threshold behavior reflecting these large, and occasionally repulsive, interactions. Our fully quantum mechanical theoretical study enables a deeper interpretation of these partial cross sections. Comparisons of the behavior in different channels and between dif…
In this paper it is shown that if one accept assumption of de Broglie that "unitary wave-particle" exists simultaneously and this coexistence is real, then one can find the mean life time of the hydrogen atom of Bohr (intensities). Something more, the acceptance of de Broglie's ideas show that a single excited hydrogen atom decays at exactly predictable moment (after excitation). The natural width of excited hydrogen atoms are found using the Bohr's model of this atom and de Broglie's ideas. The mean life time of the excited states is a characteristic only of a statistical ensemble of many ato…
Rydberg spin waves are optically excited in a quasi-one-dimensional atomic sample of Rb atoms. Pair-wise spin-wave correlations are observed by a spatially selective transfer of the quantum state onto a light field and photoelectric correlation measurements of the light. The correlations are interpreted in terms of the dephasing of multiply-excited spin waves by long-range Rydberg interactions.

A critical review on excited states of negative ions has been given recently by Buckman and Clark (1994), in a major update of the review by Schulz (1973). However, for completeness we include a summary of some known (mainly low lying) excited states. We include a brief discussion and indicate some problematic points with additional references. The observation of resonances in gas phase atomic collisions is discussed in this context. Finally we mention some very nice new results concerning the observation of these resonant states in particle surface interactions and briefly discuss the role th…
The collective effect of large amounts of atoms exhibit an enhanced interaction between light and atoms. This holds great interest in quantum optics, and quantum information. When a collective excited state of a group of atoms during Rabi oscillation is varying, the oscillation exhibits rich dynamics. Here, we experimentally observe a size-reduction effect of the Rydberg collective state during Rabi oscillation in cold atomic dilute gases. The Rydberg collective state was first created by the Rydberg quantum memory, and we observed a decreased oscillation frequency effect by measuring the time…
The differential and total cross sections for the scattering of muonic, pionic, kaonic and antiprotonic hydrogen in excited states from atomic hydrogen have been calculated for the purpose of atomic cascade calculations. The scattering problem is treated in a fully quantum mechanical framework which takes the energy shifts and, in the case of the hadronic atoms, the widths of the ns states into account. The validity of semiclassical approximations is critically examined.
Spontaneous emission from individual atoms in vapor lasts nanoseconds, if not microseconds, and beatings in this emission involve only directly excited energy sublevels. In contrast, the superfluorescent emissions burst on a much-reduced timescale and their beatings involve both directly and indirectly excited energy sublevels. In this work, picosecond and femtosecond superfluorescent beatings are observed from a dense cesium atomic vapor. Cesium atoms are excited by 60-femtosecond long, 800 nm laser pulses via two-photon processes into their coherent superpositions of the ground 6S and excite…
We report on spectroscopy of cold dysprosium atoms on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition and present measurements of the excited state lifetime which is at least $87.2(6.7)\,\mathrm{ms}$ long. Due to the long excited state lifetime we are able to measure the ratio of the excited state polarizability to the ground state polarizability at $1064\,\mathrm{nm}$ to be $0.828(0.129)$ by parametric heating in an optical dipole trap. In addition we measure the isotope shifts of the three most abundant bosonic isotopes of dysprosium on the $1001\,\mathrm{nm}$ transition with an accuracy better than $30\…
We measure and analyze the isotope shifts the multiplet of transitions between the metastable a$^5$F and excited y$^5$G$^\circ$ terms of neutral titanium by probing a titanium vapor in a hollow cathode lamp using saturated absorption spectroscopy. We resolve the five $J\to J+1$ and the four $J\to J$ transitions within the multiplet for each of the the three $I=0$ stable isotopes ($^{46}$Ti, $^{48}$Ti, and $^{50}$Ti). The isotope shifts on these transitions allow us to determine the isotope-dependent variation in the fine-structure splitting of the a$^5$F and y$^5$G$^\circ$ levels themselves. C…
We provide a formalism to describe deterministic emission of single photons with tailored spatial and temporal profiles from a regular array of multi-level atoms. We assume that a single collective excitation is initially shared by all the atoms in a metastable atomic state, and that this state is coupled by a classical laser field to an optically excited state which rapidly decays to the ground atomic state. Our model accounts for the different field polarization components via re-absorption and emission of light by the Zeeman manifold of optically excited states.
The impact of atomic excited states is investigated via a detailed model of laser-cluster interactions, which is applied to rare gas clusters in intense femtosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). This demonstrates the potential for a two-step ionization process in laser-cluster interactions, with the resulting intermediate excited states allowing for the creation of high charge states and the rapid dissemination of laser pulse energy. The consequences of this excitation mechanism are demonstrated through simulations of recent experiments in argon clusters interacting with XUV radiati…
In excited molecules, the interaction between the covalent Rydberg and ion-pair channels forms a unique class of excited Rydberg states, in which the infinite manifold of vibrational levels are the equivalent of atomic Rydberg states with a heavy electron mass. Production of the ion pair states usually requires excitation through one or several interacting Rydberg states; these interacting channels are pathways for loss of flux, diminishing the rate of ion pair production. Here, we develop an analytical, asymptotic charge transfer model for the interaction between ultracold Rydberg molecular s…
The photoionization cross-sections of two even-parity excited states, $5d6d ^3D_1$ and $6s7d ^3D_{2}$, of atomic Ba at the ionization-laser wavelength of 556.6 nm were measured. We found that the total cross-section depends on the relative polarization of the atoms and the ionization-laser light. With density-matrix algebra, we show that, in general, there are at most three parameters in the photoionization cross-section. Some of these parameters are determined in this work. We also present the measurement of the radiative lifetime of five even-parity excited states of barium.
Bilodeau and Haugan [1], using Infrared laser photodetachment spectroscopy, measured the binding energies (BEs) of the ground state (4Fe9/2) and the excited state (4Fe7/2) of the Os^- ion to be 1.07780(12) eV and 0.553(3) eV, respectively. These values are consistent with those calculated using Relativistic Configuration Interaction (RCI) calculations [2]. Here we have calculated the BEs for the ground state and the two excited states of the Os^- ion using our recent complex angular momentum (CAM) methodology [3] and obtained the BEs of 1.910, 1.230 and 0.224 eV, respectively (see Figure). We …
We study the correlated spontaneous emission from a dense spherical cloud of N atoms uniformly excited by absorption of a single photon. We find that the decay of such a state depends on the relation between an effective Rabi frequency Omega, which is proportional to sqrt{N}, and the time of photon flight through the cloud R/c. If Omega*R/c < 1 the state exponentially decays with rate Omega^{2}*R/c and the state life time is greater then R/c. In the opposite limit Omega*R/c >> 1, the coupled atom-radiation system oscillates between the collective Dicke state (with no-photons) and the atomic gr…
Statistical properties of Fano resonances occurring in photoabsorption to highly excited atomic or molecular states are derived. The situation with one open and one closed channel is analyzed when the classical motion of the excited complex in the closed channel is chaotic. The closed channel subspace is modeled by random matrix theory. The probability distribution of the Fano parameter is derived both for the case of time reversal symmetry (TRS) and broken time reversal symmetry. For the TRS case the area distribution under a resonance profile relevant for low resolution experiments is discus…
We propose a scheme to simulate lattice spin models based on strong and long-range interacting Rydberg atoms stored in a large-spacing array of magnetic microtraps. Each spin is encoded in a collective spin state involving a single $nP$ Rydberg atom excited from an ensemble of ground-state alkali atoms prepared via Rydberg blockade. After the excitation laser is switched off the Rydberg spin states on neighbouring lattice sites interact via general isotropic or anisotropic spin-spin interactions. To read out the collective spin states we propose a single Rydberg atom triggered avalanche scheme…
Measurements of hyperfine polarization quantum beats are used determine the magnetic dipole (A) and electric quadrupole (B) coupling constants in the excited atomic Cs 8p level. The experimental approach is a novel combination of pulsed optical pumping and time-delayed stimulated emission probing of the excited level. From the measured evolution of the atomic linear polarization degree as a function of probe delay time, we determine the hyperfine coupling constants A = 7.42(6) MHz and B = 0.14(29) MHz.
We report on the realization of high resolution electron microscopy of Rydberg-excited ultracold atomic samples. The implementation of an ultraviolet laser system allows us to excite the atom, with a single-photon transition, to Rydberg states. By using the electron microscopy technique during the Rydberg excitation of the atoms, we observe a giant enhancement in the production of ions. This is due to $l$-changing collisions, which broaden the Rydberg level and therefore increase the excitation rate of Rydberg atoms. Our results pave the way for the high resolution spatial detection of Rydberg…
Ionized geocosmic media parameters in a thermal and a subthermal range of energy have a number of unique features. The photoresonance plasma that is formed by optical excitation of the lowest excited (resonance) atomic states is one example of conversion of radiation energy into electrical one. Since spontaneous fluorescence of excited atoms is probabilistic, the description of the radiating quantized system evolution along with photons energy transfer in a cold atoms medium, should include elements of stochastic dynamics. Finally, the chaotic dynamics of a weakly bound Rydberg electron over a…
The wavelengths and radiative transition probabilities for transitions 2lnl'-1snl", 2lnl'-1s2l", 1s2lnl'-1s^2.nl", 1s2lnl'-1s^2.2l", and the autoionization decay probabilities for doubly excited states 2lnl', 1s2lnl' were calculated in ions with atomic numbers Z=6-36 for n=2-10, l'=0-3. The calculations were carried out by means of the MZ code based on the Z-expansion method. Relativistic corrections were taken into account within the framework of the Breit operator. The main difference with previous calculations by MZ code consists in accounting for the first order corrections in powers of 1/…
We present two-color modulation transfer spectroscopy as a tool for precision studies of atomic properties of excited states. The bi-colored technique addresses a narrow set of velocity groups of a thermal atomic vapour using a two-step transition to "burn a hole" in the velocity distribution. The resulting spectrum presents sub-Doppler linewidths, good signal to noise ratio and the trademark sidebands that work as an in situ ruler for the energy spacing between atomic resonances. The spectra obtained can be used for different applications such as measurements of energy splittings or stabiliza…
We present here the results of our relativistic many-body calculations of various properties of the first six low-lying excited states of indium. The calculations were performed using the relativistic coupled-cluster method in the framework of the singles, doubles and partial triples approximation. We obtain a large lifetime ~10s for the [4p^6]5s^2 5p_{3/2} state, which had not been known earlier. Our precise results could be used to shed light on the reliability of the lifetime measurements of the excited states of atomic indium that we have considered in the present work.
On the basis of our general theoretical results developed previously in JETP 112, 246 (2011), we calculate the spatial distribution of atoms excited in a dense and cold atomic cloud by weak monochromatic light. We also study the atomic distribution over different Zeeman sublevels of the excited state in different parts of the cloud. The dependence of this distribution of atomic excitation on the density of the atomic ensemble and the frequency of external emission is investigated. We show that in the boundary regions of the cloud the orientation and alignment of atomic angular momentum takes p…
This work reports new experimental radiative lifetimes and calculated oscillator strengths for transitions from 3d8 4d levels of astrophysical interest in singly ionized nickel. Radiative lifetimes of seven high-lying levels of even parity in Ni II (98400 -100600 cm-1) have been measured using the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence method. Two-step photon excitation of ions produced by laser ablation has been utilized to populate the levels. Theoretical calculations of the radiative lifetimes of the measured levels and transition probabilities from these levels are reported. The calculat…
This work describes the first observations of the ionisation of neon in a metastable atomic state utilising a strong-field, few-cycle light pulse. We compare the observations to theoretical predictions based on the Ammosov-Delone-Krainov (ADK) theory and a solution to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). The TDSE provides better agreement with the experimental data than the ADK theory. We optically pump the target atomic species and demonstrate that the ionisation rate depends on the spin state of the target atoms and provide physically transparent interpretation of such a spin depe…
We study an excited atom-polar molecular ion chemical reaction (Ca$^*$ + BaCl$^+$) at low temperature by utilizing a hybrid atom-ion trapping system. The reaction rate and product branching fractions are measured and compared to model calculations as a function of both atomic quantum state and collision energy. At the lowest collision energy we find that the chemical dynamics dramatically differ from capture theory predictions and are primarily dictated by the radiative lifetime of the atomic quantum state instead of the underlying excited-state interaction potential. We provide a simple rule …
We characterize the effect of quantum interference on the line shapes and measured line positions in atomic spectra. These effects, which occur when the excited state splittings are of order the excited state line widths, represent an overlooked but significant systematic effect. We show that excited state interference gives rise to non-Lorenztian line shapes that depend on excitation polarization, and we present expressions for the corrected line shapes. We present spectra of 6,7 Li D lines taken at multiple excitation laser polarizations and show that failure to account for interference chan…
Motional Stark effect (MSE) spectroscopy represents a unique diagnostic tool capable of determining the magnitude of the magnetic field and its direction in the core of fusion plasmas. The primary excitation channel for fast hydrogen atoms in injected neutral beams, with energy in the range of 25-1000 keV, is due to collisions with protons and impurity ions (e.g., He$^{2+}$ and heavier impurities). As a result of such excitation, at the particle density of 10$^{13}$-10$^{14}$ cm$^{-3}$, the line intensities of the Stark multiplets do not follow statistical expectations (i.e., the populations o…
We consider the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction of an excited alkali-type atom which has a single (electric dipole) transition with a Chern insulator. The Chern insulator has a nonzero, time reversal symmetry breaking Hall conductance, leading to an additional contribution to the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction which depends on the coupling between the Hall conductance and the circular polarization state of the atomic transition. We find that the resonant Casimir-Polder shift can be significantly enhanced for de-excitation frequencies near values associated with the van Hove singularit…
An LDA exchange potential is proposed for excited states and to test this potential we apply it to the excited states of atomic system. The potential is an approximate functional derivative of an accurate exchange energy functional for excited states. We show that the potential satisfies Levey- Perdew theorem for exchange energy and janak theorem for orbital energy very well in excited state cases. The potential is the first of its kind for excited state and can easily be generalized to other excited states of interest. We compare our results with those of other approaches reported in the lite…
Electric polarizabilities of four low-J even-parity states and three low-J odd-parity states of atomic barium in the range $35,600 $ to $36,000\ $cm$^{-1}$ are investigated. The states of interest are excited (in an atomic beam) via an intermediate odd-parity state with a sequence of two laser pulses. The odd-parity states can be excited due to the Stark-induced mixing with even-parity states. The polarizabilities are measured via direct spectroscopy on the second-stage transition. Several states have tensor and scalar polarizabilities that exceed the values that might be expected from the kno…
In this tutorial we provide a short review of attosecond pulse characterization techniques and a pedagogical account of a recently proposed method called Pulse Analysis by Delayed Absorption (PANDA) [Pabst and Dahlström, Phys. Rev. A, 94, 13411 (2016)]. We discuss possible implementations of PANDA in alkali atoms using either principal quantum number wave packets or spin-orbit wave packets. The main merit of the PANDA method is that it can be used as a pulse characterization method that is free from atomic latency effects, such as scattering phase shifts and long-lived atomic resonances. Final…
The laser-excitation of Rydberg atoms in ultracold gases is often described assuming that the atomic motion is frozen during the excitation time. We show that this frozen gas approximation can break down for atoms that are held in optical lattices or microtraps. In particular, we show that the excitation dynamics is in general strongly affected by mechanical forces among the Rydberg atoms as well as the spread of the atomic wavepacket in the confining potential. This causes decoherence in the excitation dynamics - resulting in a dissipative blockade effect - that renders the Rydberg excitation…
We present a detailed analysis of coherence creation in a four level double lambda-like atomic system using a train of ultra-short few-cycle Gaussian pulses. The effect of the Doppler broadening has been analyzed. It is possible to create high coherence across all the velocity groups in the atomic ensemble using pulses with low repetition frequency. The accumulation of coherence at different radial locations within the atomic beam cross-section as a function of the number of pulses in the train is also reported. We find that pulse train with lower repetition frequencies are able to generate hi…
We propose a new all-optical method to image individual atoms within dense atomic gases. The scheme exploits interaction induced shifts on highly polarizable excited states, which can be spatially resolved via an electromagnetically induced transparency resonance. We focus in particular on imaging strongly interacting many-body states of Rydberg atoms embedded in an ultracold gas of ground state atoms. Using a realistic model we show that it is possible to image individual impurity atoms with enhanced sensitivity and high resolution despite photon shot noise and atomic density fluctuations. Th…
Population inversion on the 5D-6P transition in Rb atoms produced by cw excitation at different wavelengths has been analysed by comparing the generated mid-IR radiation at 5.23 um originated from amplified spontaneous emission and isotropic blue fluorescence at 420 nm. A novel method of detecting two-photon excitation in atomic vapours using ASE is suggested. We have observed directional co- and counter-propagating emission at 5.23 um. We find that the power dependencies of the backward- and forward-directed emission can be very close, however their spectral dependencies are not identical. Th…
