Statistical properties of Fano resonances occurring in photoabsorption to highly excited atomic or molecular states are derived. The situation with one open and one closed channel is analyzed when the classical motion of the excited complex in the closed channel is chaotic. The closed channel subspace is modeled by random matrix theory. The probability distribution of the Fano parameter is derived both for the case of time reversal symmetry (TRS) and broken time reversal symmetry. For the TRS case the area distribution under a resonance profile relevant for low resolution experiments is discussed in detail.
This is the final report of a three-paper series on the K-shell photoabsorption and photoionization of trace elements, namely F, Na, P, Cl, K, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu and Zn. K lines and edges from such elements are observed in the X-ray spectra of supernova remnants, galaxy clusters and accreting black holes and neutron stars, their diagnostic potential being limited by poor atomic data. We are completing the previously reported radiative datasets with new photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections for isoelectronic sequences with electron number $19\leq N\leq 26$. We are also givin…

This essay is based on a talk at Advances in Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Sciences 2020 (AAMOS20) in a symposium honoring Prof. S. T. Manson's decades-long contribution to photoabsorption studies. Quantum physics introduced into physics pairs of conjugate quantities bearing a specific complementary relationship, energy and time being one such pair. This gives rise to two alternative representations, a time-dependent and a time-independent one, seemingly very different but both capable of embracing the same physics. They give complementary descriptions and insight, with technical questions, t…
Decay of bound states due to coupling with free particle states is a general phenomenon occurring at energy scales from MeV in nuclear physics to peV in ultracold atomic gases. Such a coupling gives rise to Fano-Feshbach resonances (FFR) that have become key to understanding and controlling interactions - in ultracold atomic gases, but also between quasiparticles such as microcavity polaritons. The energy positions of FFR were shown to follow quantum chaotic statistics. In contrast, lifetimes which are the fundamental property of a decaying state, have so far escaped a similarly comprehensive …

The Fano resonance has been a familiar and important feature in atomic and molecular physics for more than half a century. Typically, the combination of a discrete state with one or more continua results in an asymmetric peak in the ionization spectrum. The peak-shape, called the Fano profile, can be expressed by a simple formula derived by Fano in 1935. However, the interpretation of its characteristic parameter $q$, which represents the asymmetry of the peak in the formula, is not necessarily intuitively transparent. The Fano resonance is not necessarily a quantum effect, but it is a manifes…
We explore the properties of steady-state Fano coherences generated in a three-level V-system continuously pumped by polarized incoherent light in the absence of coherent driving. The ratio of the stationary coherences to excited-state populations $\mathcal{C} = (1+\frac{Δ^2}{γ(r+γ)} )^{-1}$ is maximized when the excited-state splitting $Δ$ is small compared to either the spontaneous decay rate $γ$ or the incoherent pumping rate $r$. We demonstrate that an intriguing regime exists where the $\mathcal{C}$ ratio displays a maximum as a function of the dephasing rate $γ_d$. We attribute the surpr…
Stochastic and equilibrium pictures of the ultracold FFR molecular conversion rate
The paper reports on the optical detection and spectroscopy of ultracold atoms near a gold surface. A probe light field is used to excite surface plasmon polaritons. The refractive index of the atomic gas shifts the plasmon resonance and changes the reflected light power. Thus, the sensitivity of the detection is plasmonically enhanced. Absorption of photons from the evanescent wave is avoided by detuning the laser from atomic resonance which makes the detection scheme potentially nondestructive. The spectrum of the signal is determined by a Fano resonance. We show that atoms can be detected n…
Ultra-high Resolution Spectroscopy with atomic or molecular Dark Resonances: Exact steady-state lineshapes and asymptotic profiles in the adiabatic pulsed regime
We study the cooperative optical coupling between regularly spaced atoms in a one-dimensional waveguide using decompositions to subradiant and superradiant collective excitation eigenmodes, direct numerical solutions, and analytical transfer-matrix methods. We illustrate how the spectrum of transmitted light through the waveguide including the emergence of narrow Fano resonances can be understood by the resonance features of the eigenmodes. We describe a method based on superradiant and subradiant modes to engineer the optical response of the waveguide and to store light. The stopping of light…
