The phonon dynamics in a one dimensional Heisenberg spin chain coupled to finite-frequency bond phonons is studied. We present the first detailed phonon spectra for these systems using Quantum Monte Carlo. The quantum phase transition is dominated by a central peak, yet the renormalisation of the main phonon branch depends strongly on the bare phonon frequency omega_0. The main branch remains largely unaffected at omega_0 \gsim J, but it softens completely when omega_0 is low enough. This is an unusual scenario for a structural phase transition and was observable only on sufficiently large systems. Approaching the dimerized phase from finite temperature, the lattice dynamics mirrors the behavior of a three dimensional system. For the efficient measurement of Greens functions, we introduce a mapping from the stochastic series expansion to continuous imaginary time.
We study the spin-Peierls transition in a Heisenberg spin chain coupled to optical bond-phonons. Quantum Monte Carlo results for systems with up to N=256 spins show unambiguously that the transition occurs only when the spin-phonon coupling alpha exceeds a critical value alpha_c. Using sum rules, we show that the phonon spectral function has divergent (for infinite N) weight extending to zero frequency for alpha < alpha_c. The equal-time phonon-phonon correlations decay with distance r as 1/r. This behavior is characteristic for all 0 < alpha < alpha_c and the q=pi phonon does not soften (to z…
We develop an analytical approach based on a unitary transformation to investigate S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled to phonons, and find a new quantum phase transition at zero temperature. Although the usual phase transition occurs depending on the strengths of the spin-spin and spin-phonon interactions, the phase transition in the present work is induced by a change in the geometrical structure of the spin-phonon interaction. The magnetic properties of the phase transition can be understood in relation to a phase transition that has already been found in the frustrated J1-J2 …
We calculate dynamical structure factors of the S=1 bond-alternating Heisenberg chain with a single-ion anisotropy in transverse magnetic fields, using a continued fraction method based on the Lanczos algorithm. In the Haldane-gap phase and the dimer phase, dynamical structure factors show characteristic field dependence. Possible interpretations are discussed. The numerical results are in qualitative agreement with recent results for inelastic neutron-scattering experiments on the S=1 bond-alternating Heisenberg-chain compound $\rm{Ni(C_{9}D_{24}N_{4})(NO_{2})ClO_{4}}$ and the S=1 Haldane-gap…
We investigate the zero- and finite-temperature properties of the bond-random $s=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by the exact diagonalization and the Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that the randomness induces the gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL) state, the random-singlet state. Implications to recent experiments on the mixed-anion pyrochlore-lattice antiferromagnet Lu$_2$Mo$_2$O$_5$N$_2$ exhibiting gapless QSL behaviors are discussed.
On the basis of a Berry-phase analysis, we study the ground state of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain for $S=2,3,4$. We find that changes of the Berry phase occur $S$ times for spin-$S$ systems, indicating the sequential phase transitions. The sequential phase transitions are associated with the change of valence-bond configurations of the ground states. To demonstrate this numerically, we connect the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Hamiltonian with the generalized Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model, and show that the different phases are connected to the different valence-bond-solid states.
The phase diagram of Kane-Mele-Heisenberg (KMH) model in classical limit~\cite{zare}, contains disordered regions in the coupling space, as the result of to competition among different terms in the Hamiltonian, leading to frustration in finding a unique ground state. In this work we explore the nature of these phase in the quantum limit, for a $S=1/2$. Employing exact diagonalization (ED) in $S_z$ and nearest neighbor valence bond (NNVB) bases, bond and plaquette valence bond mean field theories, We show that the disordered regions are divided into ordered quantum states in the form of plaquet…
We improved the decoupling approximation of the double-time Green's function theory, and applied it to study the spin-${1\over 2}$ two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with broken bonds at finite temperature. Our decoupling approximation is applicable to the spin systems with spatial inhomogeneity, introduced by the local defects, over the whole temperature region. At low temperatures, we observed that the quantum fluctuation is reduced in the neighborhood of broken bond, which is in agreement with previous theoretical expectations. At high temperatures our results showed that th…
By applying a quantum Monte Carlo procedure based on the loop algorithm we investigate thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to Einstein phonons on the bonds. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, mean phonon occupation numbers and the specific heat are discussed in detail. We study the spin correlation function both in the regime of weak and strong spin phonon coupling (coupling constants g=0.1, w=8J and g=2, w=2J, respectively). A finite size scaling analysis of the correlation length indicates that in both cases…
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases ex…
We study two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets with additional multi-spin interactions which can drive the system into a valence-bond solid state. For standard SU(2) spins, we consider both four- and six-spin interactions. We find continuous quantum phase transitions with the same critical exponents. Extending the symmetry to SU(N), we also find continuous transitions for N=3 and 4. In addition, we also study quantitatively the cross-over of the order-parameter symmetry from Z4 deep inside the valence-bond-solid phase to U(1) as the phase transition is approached.
We present a valence bond theory of the spin-S quantum Heisenberg model. For nonfrustracting, local exchange and dimension d > 1, it predicts a resonating ground state with bond amplitudes h(r) ~ (a^2+r^2)^(-p/2) and decay exponent p=d+1. Different values of p can be achieved by introducing frustrating (p > d+1) or nonfrustrating (p < d+1) long-range interactions. For d=2, but not d=3, there is a critical value of the decay exponent p_c above which the ground state is a spin liquid. The phase transition is analogous to quantum percolation, with fractal valence bond loops playing the role of pe…
Longitudinal optical phonons with oxygen character were measured in La_0.7Sr_0.3MnO_3 by inelastic neutron scattering in the (1 0 0) cubic direction and results were compared with shell model predictions. Measurements were performed in several Brillouin zones, which enabled us to identify the eigenvectors independent of the shell model. All major disagreements between model predictions and experimental results are primarily due to the anomalous downward dispersion of the bond-stretching vibration. The main new result is that the rhombohedral distortion of the cubic lattice makes the bond-stret…
We explain the anomalous doping dependence of zone boundary $(π,0)$ and $(π,π)$ bond-stretching phonons in the high-temperature superconductor La$_{2-δ}$Sr$_δ$CuO$_4$ in the doping range $0<δ<0.35$. Our calculations are based on a theory for the density response of doped Mott-Hubbard insulators.
We study classical two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg models with generically incommensurate groundstates. A new theory for the spin-nematic "order by disorder" transition is developed based on the self-consistent determination of the effective exchange coupling bonds. In our approach, fluctuations of the constraint field imposing conservation of the local magnetic moment drive nematicity at low temperatures. The critical temperature is found to be highly sensitive to the peak helimagnetic wavevector, and vanishes continuously when approaching rotation symmetric Lifshitz points. Transitions…
The Heisenberg chain with antiferromagnetic, powerlaw exchange has a quantum phase transition separating spin liquid and Neel ordered phases at a critical value of the powerlaw exponent alpha. The behaviour of the system can be explained rather simply in terms of a resonating valence bond state in which the amplitude for a bond of length r goes as r^{-alpha} for alpha < 1, as r^{-(1+alpha)/2} for 1 < alpha < 3, and as r^{-2} for alpha > 3. Numerical evaluation of the staggered magnetic moment and Binder cumulant reveals a second order transition at alpha_c = 2.18(5), in excellent agreement wit…
We have proposed the plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) ground state for the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg two-leg ladder. Based on the PSS picture, we discuss the correspondence of the PSS state to the valence-bond solid (VBS) state of the ground state of spin-2 chain by introducing an appropriate composite spin picture. When the bond alternation is introduced, there occur quantum phase transitions and each phase can be identified with that in the dimerized spin-2 chain. Furthermore, we argue that the VBS picture of spin-2S chain can be applied to the ground state of spin-S two-leg ladder.
Dynamical structure factors of the S=1 bond-alternating spin chains in the dimer phase are calculated at finite temperature, using the pair dynamical correlated-effective-field approximation. At T=0, the delta-function-type peak of the one-magnon mode appears. When temperature is increased, such a sharp peak is broadened and the additional weak peak caused by the excitation from the triplet state to the quintet state emerges in the higher energy region. The results are discussed in comparison with those obtained by the exact diagonalization method.
Bond-operator mean field equations for the square-lattice, S=1/2 bilayer Heisenberg model are developed and solved numerically. In the vicinity of both the zero-field critical point and the field-induced transitions, comparisons are made with T=0 and finite-temperature strong coupling expansions. The mean-field theory suggests that the quantum critical region for the field-induced transitions is restricted to significantly lower temperatures than one might have concluded based on strong-coupling expansions or other numerical studies.
We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
Using the density matrix renormalization group, we investigate the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with first- ($J_1$) and second-neighbor ($J_2$) interactions. We are able to study long open cylinders with widths up to 12 lattice spacings. For $J_2/J_1$ near 0.3, we find an apparently paramagnetic phase, bordered by an antiferromagnetic phase for $J_2\lesssim 0.26$ and by a valence bond crystal for $J_2\gtrsim 0.36$. The longest correlation length that we find in this intermediate phase is for plaquette valence bond (PVB) order. This correlation length grows strongly with cy…
The interplay of bond and charge correlations is studied in a one-dimensional model with both Holstein and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) couplings to quantum phonons. The problem is solved exactly by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. If one of the couplings dominates, the ground state is a Peierls insulator with long-range bond or charge order. At weak coupling, the results suggest a spin-gapped and repulsive metallic phase arising from the competing order parameters and lattice fluctuations. Such a phase is absent from the pure SSH model even for quantum phonons. At strong coupling, evidence for …
Ground state properties, dispersion relations and scaling behaviour of spin gap of a bond alternating spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ anisotropic Heisenberg chain have been studied where the exchange interactions on alternate bonds are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) in two separate cases. The resulting models separately represent nearest neighbour (NN) AFM-AFM and AFM-FM bond alternating chains. Ground state energy has been estimated analytically by using both bond operator and Jordan-Wigner representations and numerically by using exact diagonalization. Dispersion relations, spin gap and s…
Using both exact diagonalizations and diagonalizations in a subset of short-range valence bond singlets, we address the nature of the groundstate of the Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet on the square lattice with competing next-nearest and next-next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic couplings (J1-J2-J3 model). A detailed comparison of the two approaches reveals a region along the line (J2+J3)/J1=1/2, where the description in terms of nearest-neighbor singlet coverings is excellent, therefore providing evidence for a magnetically disordered region. Furthermore a careful analysis of dimer-di…
We study different phases of the one-dimensional bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model by using the symmetry fractionalization mechanism. We employ the infinite matrix-product state representation of the ground state (through the infinite-size density matrix renormalization group algorithm) to obtain inequivalent projective representations of the (unbroken) symmetry groups of the model, which are used to identify the different phases. We find that the model exhibits trivial as well as symmetry-protected topological phases. The symmetry-protected topological phases are Haldane phases on …
Long range magnetic ordering in the quasi-one-dimensional random-bond antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$O$_7$ is studied in $μ$SR experiments as a function of disorder strength. Compared to the disorder-free parent materials, the saturation ordered moment is found to be considerably reduced. Moreover, even in weakly disordered species, the magnetically ordered state is shown to be highly inhomogeneous. The results are interpreted in terms of weakly coupled random spin chains, governed by the ``infinite randomness`` fixed point.
We study polarons in the one-dimensional Bond-Peierls electron-phonon model, in which phonons on bonds of a lattice modulate the hopping of electrons between lattice sites, and contrast the results to those known for the Breathing-Mode Peierls problem. By inspecting the atomic limit, we show that polaronic dressing and mass enhancement of Bond-Peierls polarons depend on the momentum dependence of the phonons. For dispersionless phonons, Bond-Peierls polarons are perfectly localized in the atomic limit, unlike their Breathing-mode counterparts, because the carrier creates a string of phonon exc…
The scaling of entanglement entropy for the nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model is studied computationally for clusters joined by a single bond. Bisecting the balanced three legged Bethe Cluster, gives a second Renyi entropy and the valence bond entropy which scales as the number of sites in the cluster. For the analogous situation with square clusters, i.e. two $L \times L$ clusters joined by a single bond, numerical results suggest that the second Renyi entropy and the valence bond entropy scales as $L$. For both systems, the environment and the system are connected by t…
We investigate the ground state properties of a spin-1 kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model using tensor-network (TN) methods. We obtain the energy per site {$e_0=-1.41090(2)$ with $D^*=8$ multiplets retained (i.e., a bond dimension of $D=24$), and $e_0=-1.4116(4)$ from large-$D$ extrapolation,} by accurate TN calculations directly in the thermodynamic limit. The symmetry between the two kinds of triangles is spontaneously broken, with a relative energy difference of $δ\approx$ 19\%, i.e, there is a trimerization (simplex) valence-bond order in the ground state. The spin-spin, dimer-dimer…
We study S=1/2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with first and second neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange (J_{1}-J_{2} model), employing exact diagonalization in both S_z=0 basis and nearest neighbor singlet valence bond (NNVB) basis. We find that for 0.2<J_2/J_1<0.3, NNVB basis gives a proper description of the ground state in comparison with the exact results. By analyzing the dimer-dimer as well as plaquette-plaquette correlations and also defining appropriate structure factors, we investigate possible symmetry breaking states as the candidate for the ground state in the frustrated…
The existence and stability of spin-liquid phases represent a central topic in the field of frustrated magnetism. While a few examples of spin-liquid ground states are well established in specific models (e.g. the Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice), recent investigations have suggested the possibility of their appearance in several Heisenberg-like models on frustrated lattices. An important related question concerns the stability of spin liquids in the presence of small perturbations in the Hamiltonian. In this respect, the magnetoelastic interaction between spins and phonons represents a …
We study the impact of a weak bond disorder on the spinon heat transport in the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg chain material Sr_{1-x}Ca_xCuO_2. We observe a drastic suppression in the magnetic heat conductivity kappa_mag even at tiny disorder levels (i.e., Ca-doping levels), in stark contrast to previous findings for kappa_mag of S=1/2 two-dimensional square lattice and two-leg spin-ladder systems, where a similar bond disorder has no effect on kappa_mag. Hence, our results underpin the exceptional role of integrability of the S=1/2 AFM Heisenberg chain model and suggest that the bo…
The spin-Peierls transition in the ground state of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model coupled to adiabatic bond phonons is studied using a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The transition from a gapless Neel state to a spin-gapped Peierls state is explored in the parameter space spanned by the spatial anisotropy and the strength of spin-lattice coupling. It is found that for any finite inter-chain coupling, the transition to a dimerized Peierls ground state occurs only when the spin-lattice coupling exceeds a finite, non-zero critical value. This is in contrast to the pure 1D mo…
Magnetization and high-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of the Kitaev-Heisenberg material alpha-RuCl3 reveal a pressure-induced crystallographic and magnetic phase transition at a hydrostatic pressure of p=0.2 GPa. This structural transition into a triclinic phase is characterized by a very strong dimerization of the Ru-Ru bonds, accompanied by a collapse of the magnetic susceptibility. Ab initio quantum-chemistry calculations disclose a pressure-induced enhancement of the direct 4d-4d bonding on particular Ru-Ru links, causing a sharp increase of the antiferromagnetic exchange intera…
Using the infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) algorithm, we study the ground-state properties of the spin-$1/2$ quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the star lattice in the thermodynamic limit. By analyzing the ground-state energy of the two inequivalent bonds of the lattice in different unit-cell structures, we identify two competing Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) phases for different antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange couplings. More precisely, we observe (i) a VBS state which respects the full symmetries of the Hamiltonian, and (ii) a resonating VBS state which, in contrast to pr…
Motivated by puzzling characteristics of spin-glass transitions widely observed in pyrochlore-based frustrated materials, we investigate effects of coupling to local lattice distortions in a bond-disordered antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice by extensive Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the spin-glass transition temperature $\TSG$ is largely enhanced by the spin-lattice coupling, and furthermore, becomes almost independent of $Δ$ in a wide range of the disorder strength $Δ$. The critical property of the spin glass transition is indistinguishable from that of the canonical Heisenber…
We investigate the ground-state properties of the spin-half $J_1{-}J_2$ Heisenberg chain with a next-nearest-neighbor spin-Peierls dimerization using conformal field theory and Lanczos exact diagonalizations. In agreement with the results of a recent bosonization analysis by Sarkar and Sen, we find that for small frustration ($J_2/J_1$) the system is in a Luttinger spin-fluid phase, with gapless excitations, and a finite spin-wave velocity. In the regime of strong frustration the ground state is spontaneously dimerized and the bond alternation reduces the triplet gap, leading to a slight enhan…
We use a strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG) method and ground-state quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study S=1/2 spin chains with random couplings, calculating disorder-averaged spin and dimer correlations. The QMC simulations demonstrate logarithmic corrections to the power-law decaying correlations obtained with the SDRG scheme. The same asymptotic forms apply both for systems with standard Heisenberg exchange and for certain multi-spin couplings leading to spontaneous dimerization in the clean system. We show that the logarithmic corrections arise in the valence-bond (sing…
We use exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate that the Néel ground state of an antiferromagnetic SU(2) spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice can be destroyed by a coupling to quantum phonons. We find a clear first-order transition to a valence-bond-solid state with Kekulé order instead of a deconfined quantum critical point. However, quantum lattice fluctuations can drive the transition towards weakly first-order, revealing a tunability of the transition by the retardation of the interaction. In contrast to the one-dimensional case, our phase diagram in the…
We report a neutron scattering study of bond-stretching phonons in La(1.69)Sr(0.31)NiO(4), a doped antiferromagnet in which the added holes order in diagonal stripes at 45 deg to the Ni-O bonds. For the highest-energy longitudinal optical mode along the bonds, a softening of 20% is observed between the Brillouin zone center and zone boundary. At 45 deg to the bonds, a splitting of the same magnitude is found across much of the zone. Surprisingly, the charge-ordering wave vector plays no apparent role in the anomalous dispersions. The implications for related anomalies in the cuprates are discu…
The highly-frustrated spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model with both nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor exchange interactions is revisited by using an extended variational space of projected wave functions that are optimized with state-of-the-art methods. Competition between modulated valence-bond crystals (VBCs) proposed in the literature and the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) is investigated. We find that the addition of a {\it small} ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling $|J_2|>0.09 J_1$ leads to stabilization of a 36-site unit cell VBC, although the DSL remains a local…
We study the plaquette valence-bond solid phase of the spin-1/2 J_1-J_2 antiferromagnet Heisenberg model on the square lattice within the bond-operator theory. We start by considering four S = 1/2 spins on a single plaquette and determine the bond operator representation for the spin operators in terms of singlet, triplet, and quintet boson operators. The formalism is then applied to the J_1-J_2 model and an effective interacting boson model in terms of singlets and triplets is derived. The effective model is analyzed within the harmonic approximation and the previous results of Zhitomirsky an…
I use an improved version of the two-step density matrix renormalization group method to study ground-state properties of the 2D Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice. In this version the Hamiltonian is projected on a tensor product of two-leg ladders instead of chains. This allows investigations of 2D isotropic models. I show that this method can describe both the magnetically disordered and ordered phases. The ground-state phases of the checkerboard model as $J_2$ increases are: (i) Néel with $Q=(π,π)$, (ii) a valence bond crystal (VBC) of plaquettes, (iii) Néel with $Q=(π/2,π)$, and …
We investigate the antiadiabatic limit of an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons via a bond coupling. The flow equation method is used to decouple the spin and the phonon part of the Hamiltonian. In the effective spin model longer range spin-spin interactions are generated. The effective spin chain is frustrated. The resulting temperature dependent couplings are used to determine the magnetic susceptibility and to determine the phase transition from a gapless state to a dimerized gapped phase. The susceptibilities and the phase diagram obtained via the effectiv…
By means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, the static spin structure factors and the magnetization plateaus of the trimerized Heisenberg ferromagnet-ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and antiferromagnet-antiferromagnet-ferromagnet spin chains in the presence of a magnetic field are elaborately studied. It is found that in the plateau states, the static structure factor with three peaks does not vary with the external magnetic field as well as the exchange couplings; the spin correlation function behaves as a perfect sequence and has a simple relation with the magnetization p…
We obtain the phase diagram in the parameter space $(J'/J, γ)$ and an accurate estimate of the critical line separating the different phases. We show several measuments of the magnetization, dimerization, nearest neighbours correlation, and density of energy in the different zones of the phase diagram, as well as a measurement of the string order parameter proposed as the non vanishing phase order parameter characterizing Haldane phases. All these results will be compared in the limit $J'/J\gg 1$ with the behaviour of the $\textbf{S}=1$ Bond Alternated Heisenberg Chain (BAHC). The analysis of …
We study a class of disordered continuous classical spin systems including the kagome Heisenberg magnet. While each term in its local Hamiltonian can be independently minimised, we find {\it discrete} degenerate ground states whose number grows exponentially with system size. These states do not exhibit zero-energy `excitations' characteristic of highly frustrated magnets but instead are local minima of the energy landscape, albeit with an anomalously soft excitation spectrum. This represents a spin liquid version of the phenomenon of jamming familiar from granular media and structural glasses…
The Jahn-Teller model with $E\otimesβ$ electron-phonon coupling and local (Hubbard-like) Coulomb interaction is considered to describe a lattice system with two orbitals per site at half filling. Starting from a state with one electron per site, we follow the tunneling of the electrons and the associated creation of an arbitrary number of phonons due to electron-phonon interaction. For this purpose we apply a recursive method which allows us to organize systematically the number of pairs of empty/doubly occupied sites and to include infinitely many phonons which are induced by electronic tunne…
As a simple model for spin-Peierls systems we study a frustrated Heisenberg chain coupled to optical phonons. In view of the anorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 we consider two different mechanisms of spin-phonon coupling. Combining variational concepts in the adiabatic regime and perturbation theory in the anti-adiabatic regime we derive effective spin Hamiltonians which cover the dynamical effect of phonons in an approximate way. Ground-state phase diagrams of these models are determined, and the effect of frustration is discussed. Comparing the properties of the ground state and of low-l…
An exactly solvable model of the sawtooth chain with Ising and Heisenberg bonds and with coupling to lattice distortion for Heisenberg bonds is considered in the magnetic field. Using the direct transfer-matrix formalism an exact description of the thermodynamic functions is obtained. The ground state phase diagrams for all regions of parameters values containing phases corresponding to the magnetization plateaus at $M=0,1/4$ and 1/2 have been obtained. Exact formulas for bond distortions for various ground states are presented. A novel mechanism of magnetization plateau stabilization correspo…
A model of mobile-bond defects is tentatively proposed to analyze the "anomalies" observed on the NMR spectrum of the quantum Heisenberg chains of Sr2CuO3. A bond-defect is a local change in the exchange coupling. It results in a local alternating magnetization (LAM), which when the defect moves, creates a flipping process of the local field seen by each nuclear spin. At low temperature, when the overlap of the LAM becomes large, the defects form a periodic structure, which extends over almost all the chains. In that regime, the density of bond-defects decreases linearly with T.
We study the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice with an accurate Bosonic resonating valence-bond (RVB) wave function. In contrast to the RVB ansatz based on Schwinger Fermions, the representation based on Schwinger Bosons, supplemented by a variational Monte Carlo technique enforcing the exact projection onto the physical subspace, is able to describe a fully gapped spin liquid in the strongly frustrated regime. In particular, a fully symmetric Z2 spin liquid is stable between two antiferromagnetic phases; a continuous transition at J2=0.4J1…
