We study solutions of the time dependent Schrödinger equation on Riemannian manifolds with oscillatory initial conditions given by Lagrangian states. Semiclassical approximations describe these solutions for small h (where h is the semiclassical parameter), but their accuracy for large times is in general only understood up to the Ehrenfest time T ~ ln(1/h), and the most difficult case is the one where the underlying classical system is chaotic.
We show that on surfaces of constant negative curvature semiclassical approximations remain accurate for times at least up to T ~ h^(-1/2) in the case that the Lagrangian state is associated with an unstable manifold of the geodesic flow.
In this paper, we prove a quantitative version of the semiclassical limit from the Hartree to the Vlasov equation with singular interaction, including the Coulomb potential. To reach this objective, we also prove the propagation of velocity moments and weighted Schatten norms which implies the boundedness of the space density of particles uniformly in the Planck constant.
In this paper we consider the nonlinear Hartree equation in presence of a given external potential, for an initial coherent state. Under suitable smoothness assumptions, we approximate the solution in terms of a time dependent coherent state, whose phase and amplitude can be determined by a classical flow. The error can be estimated in $L^2$ by $C \sqrt {\var}$, $\var$ being the Planck constant. Finally we present a full formal asymptotic expansion.
We consider the semiclassical limit of nonrelativistic quantum many-boson systems with delta potential in one dimensional space. We prove that time evolved coherent states behave semiclassically as squeezed states by a Bogoliubov time-dependent affine transformation. This allows us to obtain properties analogous to those proved by Hepp and Ginibre-Velo (\cite{Hep}, \cite{GiVe1,GiVe2}) and also to show propagation of chaos for Schrödinger dynamics in the mean field limit. Thus, we provide a derivation of the cubic NLS equation in one dimension.
We construct quasimodes for some non-selfadjoint semiclassical operators at the boundary of the pseudo-spectrum using propagation of Hagedorn wave-packets. Assuming that the imaginary part of the principal symbol of the operator is non-negative and vanishes on certain points of the phase-space satisfying a subelliptic finite-type condition, we construct quasimodes that concentrate on these non-damped points. More generally, we apply this technique to construct quasimodes for non-selfadjoint semiclassical perturbations of the harmonic oscillator that concentrate on non-damped periodic orbits or…
We consider semiclassically scaled Schrodinger equations with an external potential and a highly oscillatory periodic potential. We construct asymptotic solutions in the form of semiclassical wave packets. These solutions are concentrated (both, in space and in frequency) around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow obtained by Peierl's substitution, and involve a slowly varying envelope whose dynamics is governed by a homogenized Schrodinger equation with time-dependent effective mass. The corresponding adiabatic decoupling of the slow and fast degrees of freedom is shown to be valid u…
We present a simple formula for the generating function for the polynomials in the $d$--dimensional semiclassical wave packets. We then use this formula to prove the associated Rodrigues formula.
We study the propagation of wave packets for nonlinear nonlocal Schrodinger equations in the semi-classical limit. When the kernel is smooth, we construct approximate solutions for the wave functions in subcritical, critical and supercritical cases (in terms of the size of the initial data). The validity of the approximation is proved up to Ehrenfest time. For homogeneous kernels, we establish similar results in subcritical and critical cases. Nonlinear superposition principle for two nonlinear wave packets is also considered.
The semiclassical long-time limit of free evolution of quantum wave packets on the torus is under consideration. Despite of simplicity of this system, there are still open questions concerning the detailed description of the evolution on time scales beyond the Ehrenfest time. One of the approaches is based on the limiting Wigner or Husimi distributions of time-evolved wave packets as the Planck constant tends to zero and time tends to infinity. We derive explicit expressions for semiclassical measures corresponding to all time scales and the corresponding stages of evolution: classical-like mo…
Although real, normalized Gaussian wave packets minimize the product of position and momentum uncertainties, generic complex normalized Gaussian wave packets do not. We prove they minimize an alternative product of uncertainties that correspond to variables that are phase space rotations of position and momentum.
In this paper, we study the semi-classical behavior of distorted plane waves, on manifolds that are Euclidean near infinity or hyperbolic near infinity, and of non-positive curvature. Assuming that there is a strip without resonances below the real axis, we show that distorted plane waves are bounded in $L^2_{loc}$ independently of $h$, that they admit a unique semiclassical measure, and we prove bounds on their $L^p_{loc}$ norms.
We study the time behavior of wave functions involved in tunneling through a smooth potential barrier in one dimension in the semiclassical limit. We determine the leading order component of the wave function that tunnels. It is exponentially small in $1/\hbar$. For a wide variety of incoming wave packets, the leading order tunneling component is Gaussian for sufficiently small $\hbar$. We prove this for both the large time asymptotics and for moderately large values of the time variable.
The main objective of this paper is understanding the propagation laws obeyed by high-frequency limits of Wigner distributions associated to solutions to the Schroedinger equation on the standard d-dimensional torus T^{d}. From the point of view of semiclassical analysis, our setting corresponds to performing the semiclassical limit at times of order 1/h, as the characteristic wave-length h of the initial data tends to zero. It turns out that, in spite that for fixed h every Wigner distribution satisfies a Liouville equation, their limits are no longer uniquely determined by those of the Wigne…
The three-wave resonant interaction equations are a non-dispersive system of partial differential equations with quadratic coupling describing the time evolution of the complex amplitudes of three resonant wave modes. Collisions of wave packets induce energy transfer between different modes via pumping and decay. We analyze the collision of two or three packets in the semiclassical limit by applying the inverse-scattering transform. Using WKB analysis, we construct an associated semiclassical soliton ensemble, a family of reflectionless solutions defined through their scattering data, intended…
In the framework of semiclassical resonances, we make more precise the link between polynomial estimates of the extension of the resolvent and propagation of the singularities through the trapped set. This approach makes it possible to eliminate infinity and to concentrate the study near the trapped set. It has allowed us in previous papers to obtain the asymptotic of resonances in various geometric situations.
The paper gives a symplectic-geometric account of semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics. We employ geometric techniques to "strip away" the symplectic structure behind the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and incorporate it into semiclassical wave packet dynamics. We show that the Gaussian wave packet dynamics is a Hamiltonian system with respect to the symplectic structure, apply the theory of symplectic reduction and reconstruction to the dynamics, and discuss dynamic and geometric phases in semiclassical mechanics. A simple harmonic oscillator example is worked out to illustrate th…
We generalize our earlier work on the symplectic/Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics of the Gaussian wave packet to non-Gaussian semiclassical wave packets. We find the symplectic forms and asymptotic expansions of the Hamiltonians associated with these semiclassical wave packets, and obtain Hamiltonian systems governing their dynamics. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the dynamics give a very good approximation to the short-time dynamics of the expectation values computed by a method based on Egorov's Theorem or the Initial Value Representation.
Contrary to the finite dimensional case, Weyl and Wick quantizations are no more asymptotically equivalent in the infinite dimensional bosonic second quantization. Moreover neither the Weyl calculus defined for cylindrical symbols nor the Wick calculus defined for polynomials are preserved by the action of a nonlinear flow. Nevertheless taking advantage carefully of the information brought by these two calculuses in the mean field asymptotics, the propagation of Wigner measures for general states can be proved, extending to the infinite dimensional case a standard result of semiclassical analy…
We formulate symmetries in semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics and find the corresponding conserved quantities, particularly the semiclassical angular momentum, via Noether's theorem. We consider two slightly different formulations of Gaussian wave packet dynamics; one is based on earlier works of Heller and Hagedorn, and the other based on the symplectic-geometric approach by Lubich and others. In either case, we reveal the symplectic and Hamiltonian nature of the dynamics and formulate natural symmetry group actions in the setting to derive the corresponding conserved quantities (mom…
We consider the singular semiclassical initial value problem for the phase space Schrodinger equation. We approximate semiclassical quantum evolution in phase space by analyzing initial states as superpositions of Gaussian wave packets and applying individually semiclassical anisotropic Gaussian wave packet dynamics, which is based on the the nearby orbit approximation; we accordingly construct a semiclassical approximation of the phase space propagator, the semiclassical wave packet propagator. By the semiclassical propagator we construct asymptotic solutions of the phase space Schrodinger …
It is argued that the high energy semiclassical wave functions (SWF) in an arbitrary billiards can be built by approximating the billiards by a respective polygon one. The latter billiards is determined by a finite number of periodic orbits of the original one limited by their lengths beginning with the shortest ones and which are common for both the billiards. The phenomenon of scars and superscars (Heller, E.J., {\it Phys. Rev. Lett.} {\bf 53},(1984) 1515) are then naturally incorporated into such a construction being a limit of periodic orbit channels (POCs) considered by Bogomolny and Schm…
This paper concerns an approximation of the expectation values of the position and momentum of the solution to the semiclassical Schrödinger equation with a Gaussian as the initial condition. Of particular interest is the approximation obtained by our symplectic/Hamiltonian formulation of the Gaussian wave packet dynamics that introduces a correction term to the conventional formulation using the classical Hamiltonian system by Hagedorn and others. The main result is a proof that our formulation gives a higher-order approximation than the classical formulation does to the expectation value dyn…
In this manuscript we identify the main differences between the effects of Kramers symmetry on the systems with even and odd number of electrons, the ways how the aforementioned symmetry affects the structure of the Conical Seams (CSs), and how it shows up in semiclassical propagation of nuclear wavepackets, crossing the CSs. We identify the topological invariants, associated with CSs, in three cases: even and odd number of electrons with time-reversal symmetry, as well as absence of the latter. We obtain asymptotically exact semiclassical analytical solutions for wavepackets scattered on a CS…
We study above-barrier scattering of Dirac electrons by a smooth electrostatic potential combined with a coordinate-dependent mass in graphene. We assume that the potential and mass are sufficiently smooth, so that we can define a small dimensionless semiclassical parameter $h \ll 1$. This electronic optics setup naturally leads to focusing and the formation of caustics, which are singularities in the density of trajectories. We construct a semiclassical approximation for the wavefunction in all points, placing particular emphasis on the region near the caustic, where the maximum of the intens…
A way of construction of semiclassical wave function (SWF) based on the Maslov - Fedoriuk approach is proposed which appears to be appropriate also for systems with chaotic classical limits. Some classical constructions called skeletons are considered. The skeletons are generalizations of Arnolds' tori able to gather chaotic dynamics. SWF's are continued by caustic singularities in the configuration space rather then in the phase space using complex time method. The skeleton formulation provides us with a new algorithm for the semiclassical approximation method which is applied to construct SW…
Recently Ohsawa has studied the Marsden-Weinstein-Meyer quotient of the manifold $T^*\mathbb{R}^n\times T^*\mathbb{R}^{2n^2}$ under a $\operatorname{O}(2n)$-symmetry, and has used this quotient to describe the relationship between two different parametrisations of Gaussian wave packet dynamics commonly used in semiclassical mechanics. In this paper we suggest a new interpretation of (a subset of) the unreduced space as being the frame bundle $\mathcal{F}(T^*\mathbb{R}^n)$ of $T^*\mathbb{R}^n$. We outline some advantages of this interpretation, and explain how it can be extended to more general…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotics of resonances in the semiclassical limit $h\to 0^+$ for $2\times 2$ matrix Schrödinger operators in one dimension. We study the case where the two underlying classical Hamiltonian trajectories cross tangentially in the phase space. In the setting that one of the classical trajectories is a simple closed curve whereas the other one is non-trapping, we show that the imaginary part of the resonances is of order $h^{(m_0+3)/(m_0+1)}$, where $m_0$ is the maximal contact order of the crossings. This principal order comes from the subprincipal terms of the…
We consider certain Lagrangian states associated to unstable horocycles on the modular surface $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})\backslash\mathbb{H}$, and show that for sufficiently large logarithmic times, expectation values for the wave propagated states diverge from the classical transport along geodesics. This is due to the fact that these states "escape to the cusp" very quickly, at logarithmic times, while the geodesic flow continues to equidistribute on the surface. The proof relies crucially on the analysis of expectation values for Eisenstein series initiated by Luo-Sarnak and Jakobson, based on sub…
The methods of the high energy semiclassical quantization in the rational polygon billiards used in our earlier papers are generalized to an arbitrary rational multi-connected polygon billiards i.e. to the billiards which is a rational polygon with other rational polygons inside them "rotated" with respect to the "mother" ones by rational angles. The respective procedure is described fully and its most important aspects are discussed. This generalization allows us to apply the method to arbitrary billiards with curved boundaries and with multi-connected areas where the respective semiclassical…
We study a special kind of semiclassical limit of quantum dynamics on a circle and in a box (infinite potential well with hard walls) as the Planck constant tends to zero and time tends to infinity. The results give detailed information about all stages of evolution of quantum wave packets: semiclassical motion, collapses, revivals, as well as intermediate stages. In particular, we rigorously justify the fact that the spatial distribution of a wave packet is most of the time close to uniform. This fact was previously known only from numerical calculations. We apply the obtained results to a pr…
We study the quantum evolution in dimension three of a system composed by a test particle interacting with an environment made of $N$ harmonic oscillators. At time zero the test particle is described by a spherical wave, i.e. a highly correlated continuous superposition of states with well localized position and momentum, and the oscillators are in the ground state. Under suitable assumptions on the physical parameters characterizing the model, we give an asymptotic expression of the solution of the Schrödinger equation of the system with an explicit control of the error. The result shows that…
The semiclassically scaled time-dependent multi-particle Schrödinger equation describes, inter alia, quantum dynamics of nuclei in a molecule. It poses the combined computational challenges of high oscillations and high dimensions. This paper reviews and studies numerical approaches that are robust to the small semiclassical parameter. We present and analyse variationally evolving Gaussian wave packets, Hagedorn's semiclassical wave packets, continuous superpositions of both thawed and frozen Gaussians, and Wigner function approaches to the direct computation of expectation values of observabl…
