We study analytical properties of the hard exclusive processes amplitudes. We found that QCD factorization for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard exclusive vector meson production results in the subtracted dispersion relation with the subtraction constant determined by the Polyakov-Weiss $D$-term. The relation of this constant to the fixed pole contribution found by Brodsky, Close and Gunion and defined by parton distributions is proved, while its manifestation is spoiled by the small $x$ divergence. The continuation to the real photons limit is considered and the numerical correspondence between lattice simulations of $D$-term and low energy Thomson amplitude is found.
In this work we extend the $q_T$-subtraction formalism, originally developed for QCD corrections, to the case of mixed QCD$\otimes$QED corrections, and apply it to the fully exclusive calculation of the ${\cal{O}}(α_sα)$ contribution to the production of an off-shell $Z$ boson in hadronic collisions. We present explicit results for the subtraction term and the hard factor, therefore providing all the ingredients needed for the application of the formalism up to ${\cal{O}}(α_sα)$. To study the phenomenological impact we consider the decay of the off-shell $Z$ boson into a pair of neutrinos, and…
We have calculated the $W$-loop contribution to the amplitude of the decay $H\rightarrow Z+γ$ in two different methods: 1) in the $R_ξ$-gauge using dimensional regularization (DimReg), and 2) in the unitary gauge through the dispersion method. Using the dispersion method we have followed two approaches: i) without subtraction and ii) with subtraction, the subtraction constant being determined adopting the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem (GBET) at the limit $M_W\to 0$. The results of the calculations in $R_ξ$-gauge with DimReg and the dispersion method with the GBET completely coincide, whi…
Making use of a recursive approach, derivative dispersion relations are generalized for an arbitrary number of subtractions. The results for both cross even and odd amplitudes are theoretically consistent at sufficiently high energies and in the region of small momentum transfer.
We present a local subtraction scheme for computing next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of a massive quark-antiquark pair from a colourless initial state. The subtraction terms are built following the CoLoRFulNNLO method and refined in such a way that their integration gives rise to compact, fully analytic expressions. All ingredients necessary for a numerical implementation of our subtraction scheme are provided in detail. As an example, we calculate the fully differential decay rate of the Standard Model Higgs boson to massive bottom quarks at next-to-next-to-lead…
Several hard exclusive scattering processes admit a description in terms of generalized parton distributions and perturbative hard-scattering kernels. Both the physical amplitude and the hard-scattering kernels fulfill dispersion relations. We give a detailed investigation of their consistency at all orders in perturbation theory. The results shed light on the information about generalized parton distributions that can be extracted from the real and imaginary parts of exclusive amplitudes. They also provide a practical consistency check for models of these distributions in which Lorentz invari…
A number of hard exclusive scattering processes can be described in terms of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and perturbative hard-scattering kernels. Both the physical amplitude and the hard-scattering kernels fulfill dispersion relations. We show that their consistency at all orders in perturbation theory is guaranteed if the GPDs satisfy certain integral relations. These relations are fulfilled thanks to Lorentz invariance.
Recently dispersion relations have been applied to hard exclusive processes such as deeply virtual Compton scattering, and a holographic principle was proposed that maps out the generalized parton distributions entering the soft matrix elements for the processes from their values on a given kinematical ridge. We examine possible pitfalls associated with the implicit, direct identification in this approach of the physical hadronic states with colored partons, and suggest an improved treatment of this assumption.
We study analytical properties of the hard exclusive process amplitudes. We found that QCD factorization for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard exclusive vector meson production results in the subtracted dispersion relation with the subtraction constant determined by the Polyakov-Weiss $D$-term.
We show that in hard exclusive electroproduction, ep-->eVp, the leading-twist hard-scattering coefficient for the production of a transversely polarized vector meson V vanishes to all orders of perturbation theory. This implies that this process cannot be used to measure the skewed transversity distribution of quarks in a hadron. In contrast, a recent calculation obtained a non-zero value at NLO. We show that this calculation is incorrect because it failed to include the necessary collinear subtractions. Our method of proof also applies to other processes whose hard-scattering coefficients are…
We apply the so-called conformal subtraction scheme to predict perturbatively exclusive processes beyond leading order. Taking into account evolution effects, we study the scheme dependence for the photon-to-pion transition form factor and the electromagnetic pion form factor at next-to-leading order for different pion distribution amplitudes. Relying on the conformally covariant operator product expansion and using the known higher order results for polarized deep inelastic scattering, we are able to predict perturbative corrections to the hard-scattering amplitude of the photon-to-pion trans…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the dispersion relations for the doubly-virtual process $γ^*γ^*\toππ$. Starting from the Bardeen-Tung-Tarrach amplitudes, we first derive the kernel functions that define the system of Roy-Steiner equations for the partial-wave helicity amplitudes. We then formulate the solution of these partial-wave dispersion relations in terms of Omnès functions, with special attention paid to the role of subtraction constants as critical for the application to hadronic light-by-light scattering. In particular, we explain for the first time why for some amplitudes the …
Exclusive pi0 electroproduction from nucleons at large photon virtuality can be described in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions, particularly the chiral odd subset. Chiral odd GPDs are related to transversity and can be accessed experimentally for various special choices of observables. This is accomplished by choosing C-parity odd and chiral odd combinations of t-channel exchange quantum numbers. These GPDs are calculated in a spectator model, and are constrained by boundary functions. Alternatively, the production amplitudes correspond to C-odd Regge exchanges with final state interac…
We perform a dispersive theoretical study of the reaction γγ\to pi^0π^0 emphasizing the low energy region. The large source of theoretical uncertainty to calculate the γγ\toπ^0π^0 total cross section for \sqrt{s}\gtrsim 0.5 GeV within the dispersive approach is removed. This is accomplished by taking one more subtraction in the dispersion relations, where the extra subtraction constant is fixed by considering new low energy constraints, one of them further refined by taking into consideration the f_0(980) region. This allows us to make sharper predictions for the cross section for \sqrt{s}\les…
We show how to correctly treat threshold singularities in fixed-order perturbative calculations of the electron anomalous magnetic moment and hadronic pair production processes such as top pair production. With respect to the former, we demonstrate the equivalence of the "non-perturbative", resummed treatment of the vacuum polarization contribution, whose spectral function exhibits bound state poles, with the fixed-order calculation by identifying a threshold localized term in the four-loop spectral function. In general, we find that a modification of the dispersion relation by threshold subtr…
We examine the contribution of W boson loops to the amplitude of the process H --> γγwithin the dispersion relation approach, taking up an issue raised in this context recently. We show that the non-vanishing limit of the relevant formfactor for mW --> 0 is due to a finite subtraction induced by the value of the corresponding trace anomaly. The argument can be truned around and one thus arrives at a dispersive ("infrared") derivation of the trace anomaly.
Computations of higher-order QCD corrections for processes with exclusive final states require a subtraction method for real-radiation contributions. We present the first-ever generalisation of a subtraction method for third-order (N3LO) QCD corrections. The Projection-to-Born method is used to combine inclusive N3LO coefficient functions with an exclusive second-order (NNLO) calculation for a final state with an extra jet. The input requirements, advantages, and potential applications of the method are discussed, and validations at lower orders are performed. As a test case, we compute the N3…
We discuss some formal and fundamental aspects related with the replacement of integral dispersion relations by derivative forms, and their practical uses in high energy elastic hadron scattering, in particular $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ scattering. Starting with integral relations with one subtraction and considering parametrizations for the total cross sections belonging to the class of entire functions in the logarithm of the energy, a series of results is deduced and our main conclusions are the following: (1) except for the subtraction constant, the derivative forms do not depend on any addition…
We propose a new method to obtain the K -> pi pi amplitude from K -> pi which allows one to fully account for the effects of final state interactions. The method is based on a set of dispersion relations for the K -> pi pi amplitude in which the weak Hamiltonian carries momentum. The soft pion theorem, which relates this amplitude to the K -> pi amplitude, can be used to determine one of the two subtraction constants - the second constant is at present known only to leading order in chiral perturbation theory. We solve the dispersion relations numerically and express the result in terms of the…
We study the spectral representation and dispersion relations that follow from some basic assumptions and the reduced spacetime symmetries on noncommutative (NC) space. Kinematic variables involving the NC parameter appear naturally as parametric variables in this analysis. When subtractions are necessary to remove ultraviolet divergences, they are always made at the fixed values of these NC variables. This point is also illustrated by a perturbative analysis of self-energies. Our analysis of the reduced spacetime symmetries suggests a weaker microcausality requirement. Starting from it, we ma…
We study the hard exclusive production of two pions in the virtual photon fragmentation region with various invariant masses including the resonance region. The amplitude is expressed in terms of two-pion light cone distribution amplitudes ($2π$DA's). We derive dispersion relations for these amplitudes, which enables us to fix them completely in terms of $ππ$ scattering phases and a few low-energy subtraction constants determind by the effective chiral lagrangian. Quantitative estimates of the resonance as well $ππ$ background DA's at low normalization point are made. We also prove certain new…
We study in detail the method proposed recently to study the vector-vector interaction using the $N/D$ method and dispersion relations, which concludes that, while for $J=0$, one finds bound states, in the case of $J=2$, where the interaction is also attractive and much stronger, no bound state is found. In that work, approximations are done for $N$ and $D$ and a subtracted dispersion relation for $D$ is used, with subtractions made up to a polynomial of second degree in $s-s_\mathrm{th}$, matching the expression to $1-VG$ at threshold. We study this in detail for the $ρ- ρ$ interaction and to…

The production of two jets is the simplest exclusive quantum chromodynamics process in electron-positron annihilation. Using this process, we examine the structure of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections to jet production observables. We derive a subtraction formalism including double real radiation at tree level and single real radiation at one loop. For two-jet production, these subtraction terms coincide with the full matrix elements, thus highlighting the phase space structure of the subtraction procedure. We then analytically compute the infrared singularities arising from eac…
We considered the power corrections to the amplitude describing hard exclusive pion pair production in gamma gamma collisions at large energy and momentum transfer. In order to derive a factorization formula for the subleading power corrections one has to take into account the so-called soft-overlap (or soft) contributions. These terms can be naturally introduced within the SCET framework as a matrix elements of the SCET-I operators. The so-called end-point singularities must cancel in the sum of the hard and soft contributions after matching onto SCET-II. Using the so-called physical subtract…
We produce an explicit formula for the dispersion relation for the Dirac Equation in the Standard Model Extension (SME) in the presence of Lorentz violation. Our expression is obtained using a novel techniques which exploit the algebra of quaternions. The dispersion relation is found to conveniently factor in two special cases that each involve a mutually exclusive set of non-vanishing Lorentz-violating parameters. This suggests that a useful approach to studies of Lorentz-violating models is to split the parameter space into two separate pieces, each of which yields a simple, tractable disper…
We derive dual parameterization for the DVCS amplitude to the twist-3 accuracy. The relation of the dual parameterization to the Abel transform tomography for amplitudes of hard exclusive processes is elaborated. We prove dispersion relations for the twist-3 DVCS amplitude in the Wandzura -- Wilczek approximation and show that the subtraction constant is given by the D-term form factor. The same as in the case of twist-2 DVCS amplitude.
The decay $η\to 3 π$ proceeds exclusively through isospin violating operators and is therefore an excellent probe to examine the strength of isospin breaking in the strong interaction. The latter can be expressed through the quark mass ratio $Q^2 = (m_s^2 - \hat{m}^2)/(m_d^2 - m_u^2)$. The main object of this thesis is to analyse the decay $η\to 3 π$ using dispersion relations in order to extract $Q$ as well as other physical quantities. The dispersion relations are a set of integral equations that lead to a representation of the decay amplitude in terms of four unknown subtraction constants. …
We consider a model with $ρππ$, $ρKK$, and gauge-invariant $ργ$ couplings and obtain the pion form factor $F_π$ at timelike momentum transfers by resummation of pion and kaon loops. We use a dispersion representation for the loop diagrams and analyse ambiguities related to subtraction constants. The resulting representation for $F_π$ is shown to have the form of the conventional vector meson dominance formula with one important distinction - the effective $ρ$-meson decay constant $f^{\rm eff}_ρ$ turns out to depend on the momentum transfer. For the electromagnetic pion form factor we include i…
We discuss some analytical and numerical aspects related to the replacement of integral dispersion relations by derivative relations and also the practical applicability of the derivative approach in the investigation of high-energy elastic hadron-hadron scattering. Making use of a Monopole Pomeron model and singly subtracted integral and derivative dispersion relations, we present the results of fits to the experimental data on the total cross sections and the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude (proton-proton and antiproton-proton interactions)…
Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory (HBChPT) to leading order provides a kernel to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the $P_{33}$ ($Δ(1232)$-channel) $π-N$ system, in the infinite nucleon mass limit. Crossed Born terms include, when iterated within the Bethe-Salpeter equation, both {\it all} one- and {\it some} two-pion intermediate states, hence preserving elastic unitarity below the two-pion production threshold. This suggests searching for a solution with the help of dispersion relations and suitable subtraction constants, when all in-elasticities are explicitly neglected. The solut…
I report on recent work done in collaboration with Irinel Caprini and Gilberto Colangelo. We observe that the Roy equations lead to a representation of the pion pion scattering amplitude that exclusively involves observable quantities, but is valid for complex values of s. At low energies, this representation is dominated by the contributions from the two subtraction constants, which are known to remarkable precision from the low energy theorems of chiral perturbation theory. Evaluating the remaining contributions on the basis of the available data, we demonstrate that the lowest resonance car…
Within fixed-t dispersion relations the results of new VPI partial-wave analysis for the multipole amplitudes $M_{1+}^{3/2},E_{1+}^{3/2}$ are successfuly described, and the resonance and nonresonance contributions into these amplitudes are separated in correspondence with the interpretation on the language of diagram approach, dynamical models and effective Lagrangian approach. The amplitudes $A_p^{3/2}$ and $A_p^{1/2}$ corresponding to the $Δ$ contributions into $M_{1+}^{3/2},E_{1+}^{3/2}$ are obtained. They are in better agreement with quark model predictions than the amplitudes extracted wi…
We analyze subtracted dispersion relations for meson correlators at finite baryon density and temperature. Such relations are needed for QCD sum rules. We point out the importance of scattering terms, as well as finite, well-defined subtraction constants. Both are necessary for consistency, in particular for the equality of the longitudinal and transverse correlators in the limit of the vanishing three-momentum of mesons relative to the medium. We present detailed calculations in various mesonic channels for the case of the Fermi gas of nucleons.
We use rigorous QCD dispersion relations to derive model-independent bounds on the B -> pi l nu, D -> pi l nu and D -> K l nu form factors. These bounds are particularly restrictive when the value of the observable form factor at one or more kinematic points is assumed. With reasonable assumptions we find f_B < 195 MeV and that the shape of the form factor becomes severely constrained. These constraints are useful both for model discrimination and for model-insensitive extraction of CKM mixing parameters.
We discuss the computation of the Higgs boson decay amplitude to two photons through the W-loop using dispersion relations. The imaginary part of the form factor F_W(s) that parametrizes this decay is unambiguous in four dimensions. When it is used to calculate the unsubtracted dispersion integral, the finite result for the form factor F_W(s) is obtained. However, the F_W(s) obtained in this way differs by a constant term from the result of a diagrammatic computation, based on dimensional regularization. It is easy to accommodate the missing constant by writing a once-subtracted dispersion rel…
In QCD sum rules with external fields, the double dispersion relation is often used to represent the correlation function. In this work, we point out that the double spectral density, when it is determined by successive applications of the Borel transformation, contains the spurious terms which should be kept in the subtraction terms in the double dispersion relation. They are zero under the Borel transformation but, if the dispersion integral is restricted with QCD duality, they contribute to the continuum. For the simple case with zero external momentum, it is shown that subtracting out the …
An analysis of the data on forward $pp, \bar pp, π^{\pm}p$ and $K^{\pm}p$ scattering is performed making use of the single- and double-subtraction integral and comparing with derivative dispersion relations for amplitudes. Various pomeron and odderon models for the total cross sections are considered and compared. The real part of the amplitude is calculated via dispersion relations. It is shown that the integral dispersion relations lead to a better description of the data for $\sqrt{s}>$5 GeV. Predictions of the considered models for the TOTEM experiment at LHC energies are given
We study nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) scattering by applying the $N/D$ method in chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) order in the calculation of the imaginary part of the $NN$ partial-wave amplitudes along the left-hand-cut, which is the dynamical input for this approach. A quite good reproduction of the Nijmegen partial-wave analysis phase shifts and mixing angles is obtained, which implies a steady improvement in the accurateness achieved by increasing the chiral order in the calculation of the dynamical input. A power counting for the subtraction constants is establish…
Integral and derivative dispersion relations (IDR and DDR) are considered for the proton-proton and antiproton-proton forward scattering amplitudes. A scheme for calculation of the corrections to asymptotic form for the DDR is presented. The data on the total proton-proton and antiproton-proton cross sections as well as the data on the ratios $ρ$ of real to imaginary part of the forward scattering amplitudes have been analyzed by the IDR and DDR methods within high-energy Regge models. Regge parametrizations of high-energy total cross sections supplemented by the properly calculated low-energy…
We review briefly some well known facts about trace anomaly and then concentrate on its 'infrared' manifestation. Among other things we show by means of dispersion relations that dilatations and translations are conflicting symmetries. We discuss the occurrence of some subtraction constants in convergent dispersion relations and illustrate it on the decay process of Higgs to two photons in the electroweak theory.
We summarize recent developments in understanding the concept of generalized parton distributions (GPDs), its relation to nucleon structure, and its application to high-Q2 electroproduction processes. Following a brief review of QCD factorization and transverse nucleon structure, we discuss (a) new theoretical methods for the analysis of deeply-virtual Compton scattering (t-channel-based GPD parametrizations, dispersion relations); (b) the phenomenology of hard exclusive meson production (experimental tests of dominance of small-size configurations, model-independent comparative studies); (c) …
The dispersive representation of the virtual Compton forward scattering amplitude has been recently reexamined in connection with the evaluation of the Cottingham formula for the proton-neutron electromagnetic mass difference. The most difficult part of the analysis is related to one of the invariant amplitudes, denoted as $T_1(ν, Q^2)$, which requires a subtraction in the standard dispersion relation with respect to the energy $ν$ at fixed photon momentum squared $q^2=-Q^2$. We propose an alternative dispersive framework, which implements analyticity and unitarity by combining the Cauchy inte…

We present a dispersive analysis of the decay amplitude for $η'\toηππ$ that is based on the fundamental principles of analyticity and unitarity. In this framework, final-state interactions are fully taken into account. Our dispersive representation relies only on input for the $ππ$ and $πη$ scattering phase shifts. Isospin symmetry allows us to describe both the charged and neutral decay channel in terms of the same function. The dispersion relation contains subtraction constants that cannot be fixed by unitarity. We determine these parameters by a fit to Dalitz-plot data from the VES and BES-…
We derive bounds analogous to the Froissart bound for the absorptive part of CFT$_d$ Mellin amplitudes. Invoking the AdS/CFT correspondence, these amplitudes correspond to scattering in AdS$_{d+1}$. We can take a flat space limit of the corresponding bound. We find the standard Froissart-Martin bound, including the coefficient in front for $d+1=4$ being $π/μ^2$, $μ$ being the mass of the lightest exchange. For $d>4$, the form is different. We show that while for $CFT_{d\leq 6}$, the number of subtractions needed to write a dispersion relation for the Mellin amplitude is equal to 2, for $CFT_{d…
If the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector turns out to be strongly interacting, the actively investigated effective theory for longitudinal gauge bosons plus Higgs can be efficiently extended to cover the regime of saturation of unitarity (where the perturbative expansion breaks down). This is achieved by dispersion relations, whose subtraction constants and left cut contribution can be approximately obtained in different ways giving rise to different unitarization procedures. We illustrate the ideas with the Inverse Amplitude Method, one version of the N/D method and another improved versio…
It is shown that in the constituent quark model of Georgi-Manohar, the dispersion relation that leads to the Adler-Weisberger sum rule for the axial vector coupling $g_A$ requires a subtraction constant. This fact explains the discrepancy between the results of different recent estimates of the $1/N_c$ corrections to Weinberg's large $N_c$ result $g_A=1$, where $N_c$ is the number of QCD colors. We also discuss a possible scenario which shows that $g_A=1$ might not be a necessary consequence of QCD in the large $N_c$ limit.
We consider the two-photon exchange contribution to the $2P-2S$ Lamb shift in muonic deuterium in the framework of forward dispersion relations. The dispersion integrals are evaluated using experimental data on elastic deuteron form factors and inelastic electron-deuteron scattering, both in the quasielastic and hadronic range. The subtraction constant that is required to ensure convergence of the dispersion relation for the forward Compton amplitude $T_1(ν,Q^2)$ is related to the deuteron magnetic polarizability $β(Q^2)$. Based on phenomenological information, we obtain for the Lamb shift $ΔE…
Within the fixed-t dispersion relation approach we have analysed the TJNAF and DESY data on the exclusive p(e,e'p)π^0 reaction in order to find the P_{33}(1232) resonance contribution into the multipole amplitudes M_{1+}^{3/2},E_{1+}^{3/2},S_{1+}^{3/2}. As an input for the resonance and nonresonance contributions into these amplitudes the earlier obtained solutions of the integral equations which follow from dispersion relations are used. The obtained values of the ratio E2/M1 for the γ^* N \to P_{33}(1232) transition are: 0.039\pm 0.029, 0.121\pm 0.032, 0.04\pm 0.031 for Q^2= 2.8, 3.2, and 4 …
We estimate exclusive density and asymmetry parameter dependent dispersion relations of various charged states of pions in asymmetric nuclear matter. The possibility of matter induced mixing of $π^0$ with $η$ is clearly exposed with the further mass modification of $π^0$ meson due to mixing. Asymmetry driven mass splitting and mixing amplitude are of the same order as the corresponding values in vacuum. Closed form analytic results for the mass shifts and dispersion relations with and without mixing are presented. Furthermore, we discuss the sensitivity of our results on the scalar mean field …
We provide a dispersion-theoretical representation of the reaction amplitudes $γK\to K π$ in all charge channels, based on modern pion-kaon $P$-wave phase shift input. Crossed-channel singularities are fixed from phenomenology as far as possible. We demonstrate how the subtraction constants can be matched to a low-energy theorem and radiative couplings of the $K^*(892)$ resonances, thereby providing a model-independent framework for future analyses of high-precision kaon Primakoff data.
We use a dispersion representation based on unitarity and analyticity to study the low energy $γ^* N\rightarrow πN$ process in the $S_{11}$ channel. Final state interactions among the $πN$ system are critical to this analysis. The left-hand part of the partial wave amplitude is imported from $\mathcal{O}(p^2)$ chiral perturbation theory result. On the right-hand part, the final state interaction is calculated through Omnès formula in $S$ wave. It is found that a good numerical fit can be achieved with only one subtraction parameter, and the eletroproduction experimental data of multipole ampli…
