In this Letter, we present a physical scheme for implementing the discrete quantum Fourier transform in a coupled semiconductor double quantum dot system. The main controlled-R gate operation can be decomposed into many simple and feasible unitary transformations. The current scheme would be a useful step towards the realization of complex quantum algorithms in the quantum dot system.
A coupled system of a superconducting transmission line resonator with a semiconductor double quantum dot is analyzed. We simulate the phase shift of the microwave signal in the resonator, which is sensitive to the quantum dot qubit state and manipulation. The measurement quality is sufficiently high and the results demonstrate a solid-state quantum processor based on this type of circuit can be envisioned.
We propose an all-optical implementation of quantum-information processing in semiconductor quantum dots, where electron-hole excitations (excitons) serve as the computational degrees of freedom (qubits). We show that the strong dot confinement leads to an overall enhancement of Coulomb correlations and to a strong renormalization of the excitonic states, which can be exploited for performing conditional and unconditional qubit operations.
Based on electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots as qubits, a new quantum controlled-NOT(CNOT) gate is constructed in solid nanostructure without resorting to spin-spin interactions. Single electron tunneling technology and coherent quantum-dot cellular automata architecture are used to generate an ancillary charge entangled state. Using the ancillary charge entangled state as an intermediate state, we obtain a spin entangled state and design a CNOT gate by using only single spin rotations.
A quantum information processing scheme is proposed with semiconductor quantum dots located in a high-Q single mode QED cavity. The spin degrees of freedom of one excess conduction electron of the quantum dots are employed as qubits. Excitonic states, which can be produced ultrafastly with optical operation, are used as auxiliary states in the realization of quantum gates. We show how properly tailored ultrafast laser pulses and Pauli-blocking effects, can be used to achieve a universal encoded quantum computing.
The quantum Rabi oscillations in a coherently driven quantum dot embedded in a high-Q doubly resonant semiconductor micro-cavity in the presence of a strong second-order nonlinear medium is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the second order nonlinearity effect the Rabi oscillations in a significant manner.
We develop a scalable architecture for quantum computation using controllable electrons of double-dot molecules coupled to a microwave stripline resonator on a chip, which satisfies all Divincenzo criteria. We analyze the performance and stability of all required operations and emphasize that all techniques are feasible with current experimental technologies.
A potential scheme is proposed for realizing a two-qubit quantum gate in semiconductor quantum dots. Information is encoded in the spin degrees of freedom of one excess conduction electron of each quantum dot. We propose to use two lasers, radiation two neighboring QDs, and tuned to blue detuning with respect to the resonant frequencies of individual excitons. The two-qubit phase gate can be achieved by means of both Pauli-blocking effect and dipole-dipole coupling between intermediate excitonic states.
We study theoretically the appearance of quantum correlations in two- and three-electron scattering in single and double dots. The key role played by transport resonances into entanglement formation between the single-particle states is shown. Both reflected and transmitted components of the scattered particle wavefunction are used to evaluate the quantum correlations between the incident carrier and the bound particle(s) in the dots. Our investigation provides a guideline for the analysis of decoherence effects due to the Coulomb scattering in semiconductor quantum dots structures.
Quantum optical phenomena are explored in artificial atoms well known as semiconductor quantum dots, in the presence of excitons and biexcitons. The analytical results are obtained using the conventional time-dependent perturbation technique. Numerical estimations are made for arealistic sample of CdS quantum dots in a high-Q cavity. Quantum optical phenomena such as quantum Rabi oscillations, photon statistics and collapse and revival of population inversion in exciton and biexciton states are observed. In the presence of biexcitons the collapse and revival phenomenon becomes faster due to th…
It is shown that spectrally resolved photon-statistics measurements of the resonance fluorescence from realistic semiconductor quantum-dot systems allow for high contrast identification of the two-photon strong-coupling states. Using a microscopic theory, the second-rung resonance is analyzed and optimum excitation conditions are determined. The computed photon-statistics spectrum displays gigantic, experimentally robust resonances at the energetic positions of the second-rung emission.

In this review we discuss the fundamentals and recent progress in the generation of single photons, entangled photon pairs and photonic cluster states using semiconductor quantum dots. Specific fundamentals which are discussed are a detailed quantum description of light, properties of semiconductor quantum dots and light-matter interactions. This includes a framework for the…
We study the effect of external electric bias on the quantum correlations in the array of optically excited coupled semiconductor quantum dots. The correlations are characterized by the quantum discord and concurrence and are observed using excitonic qubits. We employ the lower bound of concurrence for thermal density matrix at different temperatures. The effect of the Förster interaction on correlations will be studied. Our theoretical model detects nonvanishing quantum discord when the electric field is on while concurrence dies, ensuring the existence of nonclassical correlations as measure…
Due to coherent population oscillation (CPO) effect, we theoretically examine the generation and manipulation of Laguerre-Gaussian beams in terms of phase and amplitude modulation respectively in semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs). The results indicate that both phase modulation with low absorption of probe field and amplitude modulation with high efficiency can be achieved. Thus the practical way demonstrates that the SQDs system can function as effective optically addressed spatial light modulator with which the transverse spatial properties of probe fields can be artificially modulated.
The universal quantum computation is obtained when there exists asymmetric anisotropic exchange between electron spins in coupled semiconductor quantum dots. The asymmetric Heisenberg model can be transformed into the isotropic model through the control of two local unitary rotations for the realization of essential quantum gates. The rotations on each qubit are symmetrical and depend on the strength and orientation of asymmetric exchange. The implementation of the axially symmetric local magnetic fields can assist the construction of quantum logic gates in anisotropic coupled quantum dots. Th…
Several recently proposed implementations of scalable quantum computation rely on the ability to manipulate the spin polarization of individual electrons in semiconductors. The most rapid single-spin-manipulation technique to date relies on the generation of an effective magnetic field via a spin-sensitive optical Stark effect. This approach has been used to split spin states in colloidal CdSe quantum dots and to manipulate ensembles of spins in ZnMnSe quantum wells with femtosecond optical pulses. Here we report that the process will produce a coherent rotation of spin in quantum dots contain…
In this chapter we review the use of semiconductor quantum dots as sources of quantum light. Principally, we focus on resonant two-photon excitation, which is a method that allows for on-demand generation of photon pairs. We explore the advantages of resonant excitation and present a number of measurements that were made in this excitation regime. In particular, we cover the following topics: photon statistics, coherent manipulation of the ground-excited state superposition, and generation of time-bin entangled photon pairs.
We demonstrate Werner-like polarization-entangled state generation disapproving local hidden variable theory from a single semiconductor quantum dot. By exploiting tomographic analysis with temporal gating, we find biphoton states are mapped on the Werner state, which is crucial for quantum information applications due to its versatile ramifications such as usefulness to teleportation. Observed time evolution of the biphoton state brings us systematic understanding on a relationship between tomographically reconstructed biphoton state and a set of parameters characterizing exciton state includ…
We demonstrate and characterize interference between discrete photons emitted by two separate semiconductor quantum dot states in different samples excited by a pulsed laser. Their energies are tuned into resonance using strain. The photons have a total coalescence probability of 18.1% and the coincidence rate is below the classical limit. Post-selection of coincidences within a narrow time window increases the coalescence probability to 47%. The probabilities are reduced from unity because of dephasing and the postselection value is also reduced by the detector time response.
We theoretically investigate polarization-entangled photon generation by using a semiconductor quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. The entangled states can be produced by the application of two cross-circularly polarized laser fields. The quantum dot nanostructure is considered as a four-level system (ground, two excitons and bi-exciton states) and the theoretical study relies on the dressed states scheme. The quantum correlations, reported in terms of the entanglement of formation, are extensively studied for several values of the important parameters of the quantum dot system as the bi-ex…
We design and analyze a logical qubit composed of a linear array of electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots. To avoid the difficulty of fully controlling a two-dimensional array of dots, we adapt spin control and error correction to a one-dimensional line of silicon quantum dots. Control speed and efficiency are maintained via a scheme in which electron spin states are controlled globally using broadband microwave pulses for magnetic resonance while two-qubit gates are provided by local electrical control of the exchange interaction between neighboring dots. Error correction with two-, th…
A theoretical investigation on slow light propagation based on eletromagnetically induced transparency in a three-level quantum-dot system is performed including non-Markovian effects and correlated dephasing reservoirs. It is demonstraonated that the non-Markovian nature of the process is quite essential even for conventional dephasing typical of quantum dots leading to significant enhancement or inhibition of the group velocity slow-down factor as well as to the shifting and distortion of the transmission window. Furthermore, the correlation between dephasing reservoirs may also either enhan…
We show storage of the circular polarisation of an optical field, transferring it to the spin-state of an individual electron confined in a single semiconductor quantum dot. The state is subsequently readout through the electronically-triggered emission of a single photon. The emitted photon shares the same polarisation as the initial pulse but has a different energy, making the transfer of quantum information between different physical systems possible. With an applied magnetic field of 2 Tesla, spin memory is preserved for at least 1000 times more than the exciton's radiative lifetime.
We show that, Four wave mixing (FWM) processes of grating can be controlled by the presence of interactions with a quantum dot or a molecule made by coupled quantum dots. By choosing the appropriate level spacing for the quantum emitter, one can either suppress or enhance the Four wave mixing process. We revel theoretically the underlying mechanism for this effect. (i) Suppression in FWM intensity occurs simply because induced Electromagnetic Induced Transparency does not allow the excitation at converted FWM frequency. (ii) Enhancement emerges since FWM process can be brought to resonance. Pa…
We propose a quantum optical interface between an atomic and solid state system. We show that quantum states in a single trapped atom can be entangled with the states of a semiconductor quantum dot through their common interaction with a classical laser field. The interference and detection of the resulting scattered photons can then herald the entanglement of the disparate atomic and solid-state quantum bits. We develop a protocol that can succeed despite a significant mismatch in the radiative characteristics of the two matter-based qubits. We study in detail a particular case of this interf…
We investigate the dynamics of quantum discord and concurrence between two excitonic qubits placed inside two coupled semiconductor quantum dots independently interacting with dephasing reservoirs. We explore their behavior against the dimensionless time and the temperature in both Markovian and non-Markovian environments. Moreover, we analyze the external electric field effects and the Förster interaction effects on these correlations. We show that, although the quantum correlations amount is strongly influenced by the variation of the electric field and the Förster interaction, their non-Mar…
In this theoretical manuscript I propose a scheme for entangling a single electron semiconductor spin qubit with a single electron semiconductor charge qubit in a triangular triple quantum dot configuration. Two out of three quantum dots are used to define a single electron semiconductor charge qubit. Furthermore, the spin qubit is embedded in the Zeeman sub-levels of the third quantum dot. Combining single qubit gates with entangling CNOT gates allows one to construct a SWAP gate, and therefore to use the semiconductor spin qubit as a long-lived memory for the semiconductor charge qubit.
We propose a solid-state implementation of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in two coupled semiconductor quantum dots. Proper combination of two pulsed laser fields allows the coherent carrier transfer between the two nanostructures without suffering significant losses due to environment coupling. By use of a general solution scheme for the carrier states in the double-dot structure, we identify the pertinent dot and laser parameters.
We propose a scheme for a two-qubit conditional phase gate by quantum Zeno effect with semiconductor quantum dots. The system consists of two charged dots and one ancillary dot that can perform Rabi oscillations under a resonant laser pulse. The quantum Zeno effect is induced by phonon-assisted exciton relaxation between the ancillary dot and the charged dots, which is equivalent to a continuous measurement. We solve analytically the master equation and simulate the dynamics of the system using a realistic set of parameters. In contrast to standard schemes, larger phonon relaxation rates incre…
In the context of a semiconductor based implementation of a quantum computer the idea of a quantum storage bit is presented and a possible implementation using a double quantum dot structure is considered. A measurement scheme using a stimulated Raman adiabatic passage is discussed.
In this paper we study the implementation of non-adiabatic geometrical quantum gates with in semiconductor quantum dots. Different quantum information enconding/manipulation schemes exploiting excitonic degrees of freedom are discussed. By means of the Aharanov-Anandan geometrical phase one can avoid the limitations of adiabatic schemes relying on adiabatic Berry phase; fast geometrical quantum gates can be in principle implemented
We investigate the emission properties of a single semiconductor quantum dot deterministically coupled to a confined optical mode in the weak coupling regime. A strong pulling, broadening and narrowing of the cavity mode emission is evidenced when changing the spectral detuning between the emitter and the cavity. These features are theoretically accounted for by considering the phonon assisted emission of the quantum dot transition. These observations highlight a new situation for cavity quantum electrodynamics involving spectrally broad emitters.
Electron spin qubits in semiconductors are attractive from the viewpoint of long coherence times. However, single spin measurement is challenging. Several promising schemes incorporate ancillary tunnel couplings that may provide unwanted channels for decoherence. Here, we propose a novel spin-charge transduction scheme, converting spin information to orbital information within a single quantum dot by microwave excitation. The same quantum dot can be used for rapid initialization, gating, and readout. We present detailed modeling of such a device in silicon to confirm its feasibility.
A potential implementation of quantum-computation schemes in semiconductor-based structures is proposed. In particular, an array of quantum dots is shown to be an ideal quantum register for a noiseless information encoding. In addition to the suppression of phase-breaking processes in quantum dots due to the well-known phonon bottleneck, we show that a proper quantum encoding allows to realise a decoherence-free evolution on a time-scale long compared to the femtosecond scale of modern ultrafast laser technology. This result might open the way to the realization of semiconductor-based quantum …
Preparation of a specific quantum state is a required step for a variety of proposed practical uses of quantum dynamics. We report an experimental demonstration of optical quantum state preparation in a semiconductor quantum dot with electrical readout, which contrasts with earlier work based on Rabi flopping in that the method is robust with respect to variation in the optical coupling. We use adiabatic rapid passage, which is capable of inverting single dots to a specified upper level. We demonstrate that when the pulse power exceeds a threshold for inversion, the final state is independent …
We propose a scheme to efficiently couple a single quantum dot electron spin to an optical nano-cavity, which enables us to simultaneously benefit from a cavity as an efficient photonic interface, as well as to perform high fidelity (nearly 100%) spin initialization and manipulation achievable in bulk semiconductors. Moreover, the presence of the cavity speeds up the spin initialization process beyond GHz.
We study electron-phonon interaction induced decoherence between two-electron singlet and triplet states in a semiconductor double quantum dot using a spin-boson model. We investigate the onset and time evolution of this dephasing, and study its dependence on quantum dot parameters such as dot size and double dot separations, as well as the host materials (GaAs and Si). At the short time limit, electron-phonon interaction only causes an incomplete initial Gaussian decay of the off-diagonal density matrix element in the singlet-triplet Hilbert space. A complete long-time exponential decay due t…
Most optical quantum devices require deterministic single-photon emitters. Schemes so far demonstrated in the solid state imply an energy relaxation which tends to spoil the coherent nature of the time evolution, and with it the photon indistinguishability. We focus our theoretical investigation on semiconductor quantum dots embedded in microcavities. Simple and general relations are identified between the photon indistinguishability and the collection efficiency. The identification of the key parameters and of their interplay provides clear indications for the device optimization.
Semiconductor quantum dots are considered to be the leading venue for fabricating on-demand sources of single photons. However, the generation of long-lived dark excitons imposes significant limits on the efficiency of these sources. We demonstrate a technique that optically pumps the dark exciton population and converts it to a bright exciton population, using intermediate excited biexciton states. We show experimentally that our method considerably reduces the DE population while doubling the triggered bright exciton emission, approaching thereby near-unit fidelity of quantum dot depletion.
Because of their long coherence times and potential for scalability, semiconductor quantum-dot spin qubits hold great promise for quantum information processing. However, maintaining high connectivity between quantum-dot spin qubits, which favor linear arrays with nearest neighbor coupling, presents a challenge for large-scale quantum computing. In this work, we present evidence for long-distance spin-chain-mediated superexchange coupling between electron spin qubits in semiconductor quantum dots. We weakly couple two electron spins to the ends of a two-site spin chain. Depending on the spin s…
We show how a spin interaction between electrons localized in neighboring quantum dots can be induced and controlled optically. The coupling is generated via virtual excitation of delocalized excitons and provides an efficient coherent control of the spins. This quantum manipulation can be realized in the adiabatic limit and is robust against decoherence by spontaneous emission. Applications to the realization of quantum gates, scalable quantum computers, and to the control of magnetization in an array of charged dots are proposed.
We probe local charge fluctuations in a semiconductor via laser spectroscopy on a nearby self-assembled quantum dot. We demonstrate that the quantum dot is sensitive to changes in the local environment at the single charge level. By controlling the charge state of localized defects, we are able to infer the distance of the defects from the quantum dot with +-5 nm resolution. The results identify and quantify the main source of charge noise in the commonly-used optical field-effect devices. Based on this understanding we achieve routinely close-totransform-limited quantum dot optical linewidths…
We consider a nanostructure consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot coupled to a metal nanoparticle, and show with numerical simulations that the exciton state of the quantum dot can be robustly generated from the ground state even for small interparticle distances, using conventional chirped pulses with Gaussian and hyperbolic secant envelopes. The asymmetry observed in the final exciton population with respect to the chirp sign of the applied pulses is explained using the nonlinear density matrix equations describing the system, and is attributed to the real part of the parameter emerging …
A matrix Berry phase can be generated and detected by {\it all electric means} in II-VI or III-V n-type semiconductor quantum dots by changing the shape of the confinement potential. This follows from general symmetry considerations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling terms. The resulting 2 x 2 matrix Berry phase can be characterized by two numbers of geometric origin. We investigate how these parameters depend on the shape and area of closed adiabatic paths. We suggest how the matrix Berry phase may be detected in transport measurements.
Optical techniques for the quantum control of the dynamics of multiexciton states in a semiconductor quantum dot are explored in theory. Composite bichromatic phase-locked pulses are shown to reduce the time of elementary quantum operations on excitons and biexcitons by an order of magnitude or more. Analytic and numerical methods of designing the pulse sequences are investigated. Fidelity of the operation is used to gauge its quality. A modified Quantum Fourier Transform algorithm is constructed with only Rabi rotations and is shown to reduce the number of operations. Application of the desig…
Multi-electron semiconductor quantum dots have found wide application in qubits, where they enable readout and enhance polarizability. However, coherent control in such dots has typically been restricted to only the lowest two levels, and such control in the strongly interacting regime has not been realized. Here we report quantum control of eight different resonances in a silicon-based quantum dot. We use qubit readout to perform spectroscopy, revealing a dense set of energy levels with characteristic spacing far smaller than the single-particle energy. By comparing with full configuration in…
We present a highly flexible computational scheme for studying correlated electrons confined by an arbitrary external potential in two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots. The method starts by a Lagrange mesh calculation for the single-particle states, followed by the calculation of the Coulomb interaction matrix elements between these, and combining both in the exact diagonalization of the many-body Hamiltonian. We apply the method in simulation of double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubits. We simulate the full quantum control and dynamics of one singlet-triplet qubit. We also use our meth…
Time resolved intensity cross-correlation measurements of radiative cascades are used for studying non-radiative relaxation processes of excited carriers confined in semiconductor quantum dots. We spectrally identify indirect radiative cascades which include intermediate phonon assisted relaxations. The energy of the first photon reveals the multicarrier configuration prior to the non-radiative relaxation, while the energy of the second photon reveals the configuration after the relaxation. The intensity cross correlation measurements thus provide quantitative measures of the non-radiative pro…
We show theoretically and experimentally the existence of a new quantum interference(QI) effect between the electron-hole interactions and the scattering by a single Mn impurity. Theoretical model, including electron-valence hole correlations, the short and long range exchange interaction of Mn ion with the heavy hole and with electron and anisotropy of the quantum dot, is compared with photoluminescence spectroscopy of CdTe dots with single magnetic ions. We show how design of the electronic levels of a quantum dot enable the design of an exciton, control of the quantum interference and hence…
The future of quantum communication systems and quantum networks heavily rely on the ability to fabricate and coherently control the conversion of photons between different modes based on a solid-state plateform. In this work, we propose and theoretically investigate a scheme to optomechanically control coherent mode conversion of optical photons by utilizing two optically coupled hybrid semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot (QD). One of the microcavity is pumped by an external laser and the second cavity is driven by light emitted by the QD that is embedded in the interface sep…
We show that the g-factor and the spin-flip time T_{1} of a heterojunction quantum dot is very sensitive to the band-bending interface electric field even in the absence of wave function penetration into the barrier. When this electric field is of the order of 10^{5} V/cm, g and T_{1} show high sensitivity to dot radius and magnetic field arising from the interplay between Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. This result opens new possibilities for the design of a quantum dot spin quantum computer where g-factor and T_{1} can be engineered by manipulating the spin-orbit coupling thr…
We report on a single photon and spin storage device based on a semiconductor quantum dot molecule. Optically excited single electron-hole pairs are trapped within the molecule and their recombination rate is electrically controlled over three orders of magnitude. Single photons are stored up to 1 microsecond and read out on a sub-nanosecond timescale. Using resonant excitation, the circular polarisation of individual photons is transferred into the spin state of electron-hole pairs with a fidelity above 80%, which does not degrade for storage times up to the 12.5ns repetition period of the ex…
We study the quantum-confined Stark effect in single InAs/GaAs quantum dots embedded within a AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. By significantly increasing the barrier height we can observe emission from a dot at electric fields of -500 kV/cm, leading to Stark shifts of up to 25 meV. Our results suggest this technique may enable future applications that require self-assembled dots with transitions at the same energy.
As with any quantum computing platform, semiconductor quantum dot devices require sophisticated hardware and controls for operation. The increasing complexity of quantum dot devices necessitates the advancement of automated control software and image recognition techniques for rapidly evaluating charge stability diagrams. We use an image analysis toolbox developed in Python to automate the calibration of virtual gates, a process that previously involved a large amount of user intervention. Moreover, we show that straightforward feedback protocols can be used to simultaneously tune multiple tun…
Tomographic analysis demonstrates that the polarization state of pairs of photons emitted from a biexciton decay cascade becomes entangled when spectral filtering is applied. The measured density matrix of the photon pair satisfies the Peres criterion for entanglement by more than 3 standard deviations of the experimental uncertainty and violates Bell's inequality. We show that the spectral filtering erases the ``which path'' information contained in the photons color and that the remanent information in the quantum dot degrees of freedom is negligible.
Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) promises natural compatibility with quantum error correcting codes at the cost of a polynomial increase in physical qubits. MBQC proposals have largely focused on photonic systems, where 2-qubit gates are difficult. Semiconductor spin qubits in quantum dots, on the other hand, offer fast 2-qubit gates via the exchange interaction. In exchange-based quantum computing, as with other solid-state qubits, leakage to higher states is a serious problem that must be mitigated. Here, two hybrid measurement-exchange schemes are proposed which quantify the benef…
We demonstrate a 12 quantum dot device fabricated on an undoped Si/SiGe heterostructure as a proof-of-concept for a scalable, linear gate architecture for semiconductor quantum dots. The device consists of 9 quantum dots in a linear array and 3 single quantum dot charge sensors. We show reproducible single quantum dot charging and orbital energies, with standard deviations less than 20% relative to the mean across the 9 dot array. The single quantum dot charge sensors have a charge sensitivity of 8.2 x 10^{-4} e/root(Hz) and allow the investigation of real-time charge dynamics. As a demonstrat…
We perform extended numerical studies to maximize the overall photon coupling efficiency of fiber-coupled quantum dot single-photon sources emitting in the near-infrared and telecom regime. Using the finite element method, we optimize the photon extraction and fiber-coupling efficiency of quantum dot single-photon sources based on micromesas, microlenses, circular Bragg grating cavities and micropillars. The numerical simulations which consider the entire system consisting of the quantum dot source itself, the coupling lens, and the single-mode fiber yield overall photon coupling efficiencies …
This paper describes the modeling of quantum dots lasers with the aim of assessing the conditions for stable cw dual-mode operation when the mode separation lies in the THz range. Several possible models suited for InAs quantum dots in InP barriers are analytically evaluated, in particular quantum dots electrically coupled through a direct exchange of excitation by the wetting layer or quantum dots optically coupled through the homogeneous broadening of their optical gain. A stable dual-mode regime is shown possible in all cases when quantum dots are used as active layer whereas a gain medium …
