In this expository article we review recent advances in our understanding of the combinatorial and algebraic structure of perturbation theory in terms of Feynman graphs, and Dyson-Schwinger equations. Starting from Lie and Hopf algebras of Feynman graphs, perturbative renormalization is rephrased algebraically. The Hochschild cohomology of these Hopf algebras leads the way to Slavnov-Taylor identities and Dyson-Schwinger equations. We discuss recent progress in solving simple Dyson-Schwinger equations in the high energy sector using the algebraic machinery. Finally there is a short account on a relation to algebraic geometry and number theory: understanding Feynman integrals as periods of mixed (Tate) motives.
A perturbative formulation of algebraic field theory is presented, both for the classical and for the quantum case, and it is shown that the relation between them may be understood in terms of deformation quantization.
Some aspects of quantum properties of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions are discussed for non-practitioners. At perturbative level, they include the Weyl trace anomaly as well as composite duality anomalies, the latter being relevant for perturbative finiteness. At non-perturbative level, we briefly review some facts about extremal black holes, their Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and attractor flows for single- and two-centered solutions.
We discuss the non-perturbative aspect of zero dimensional superstring. The perturbative expansions of correlation functions diverge as $\sum_l(3l)!κ^{2l}$, where $κ$ is a string coupling constant. This implies there are non-perturbative contributions of order $\e^{Cκ^{-{2 \over 3}}}$. (Here $C$ is a constant.) This situation contrasts with those of critical or non-critical bosonic strings, where the perturbative expansions diverge as $\sum_ll!κ^{2l}$ and non-perturbative behaviors go as $\e^{Cκ^{-1}}$. It is explained how such nonperturbative effects of order $\e^{Cκ^{-{2 \over 3}}}$ appear i…
Certain perturbative aspects of two-dimensional sigma models with (0,2) supersymmetry are investigated. The main goal is to understand in physical terms how the mathematical theory of ``chiral differential operators'' is related to sigma models. In the process, we obtain, for example, an understanding of the one-loop beta function in terms of holomorphic data. A companion paper will study nonperturbative behavior of these theories.
Within the framework of the q-deformed Heisenberg algebra a dynamical equation of q-deformed quantum mechanics is discussed. The perturbative aspects of the q-deformed Schrödinger equation are analyzed. General representations of the additional momentum-dependent interaction originating from the q-deformed effects are presented in two approaches. As examples, such additional interactions related to the harmonic-oscillator potential and the Morse potential are demonstrated.
Within the superfield formalism, we calculate the two-point functions and the effective potential for the mass-deformed ${\cal N}=3$ Chern-Simons-matter theory and discuss the related renormalization group issues.
The Maldacena-Nunez solution is generalized to include a number of integration constants, one of which controls the resolution of the singularity of the wrapped D5-brane background. Some features of the dual pure N=1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory are calculated, amongst which the gluino condensate, the beta function of the gauge coupling and a brane probe potential, which is related to the Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective potential. Each integration constant has a precise meaning in the dual SYM theory, e.g., the amount of non-perturbative SYM physics captured by the gravity configuration is d…
The renormalization group flow equation obtained by means of a proper time regulator is used to calculate the two loop beta function and anomalous dimension eta of the field for the O(N) symmetric scalar theory. The standard perturbative analysis of the flow equation does not yield the correct results for both beta and eta. We also show that it is still possible to extract the correct beta and eta from the flow equation in a particular limit of the infrared scale. A modification of the derivation of the Exact Renormalization Group flow, which involves a more general class of regulators, to rec…
We survey some algebraic geometric aspects of mirror symmetry and duality in string theory. Some applications of computer algebra to algebraic geometry and string theory are shortly reviewed.
It is known that YM_2 with gauge group SU(N) is equivalent to a string theory with coupling g_s=1/N, order by order in the 1/N expansion. We show how this results can be obtained from the bosonization of the fermionic formulation of YM_2, improving on results in the literature, and we examine a number of non-perturbative aspects of this string/YM correspondence. We find contributions to the YM_2 partition function of order exp{-kA/(πα' g_s)} with k an integer and A the area of the target space, which would correspond, in the string interpretation, to D1-branes. Effects which could be interpret…
Some nonperturbative aspects of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions, quantized in the Landau gauge, are analytically studied. In particular, we investigate the dynamical mass generation for the gluons due to the presence of dimension two condensates. This study is performed in the framework of the local composite operator technique in the case of the Yang-Mills action as well as in the case of the Gribov-Zwanziger action. Further, an investigation of the Gribov ambiguities in the linear covariant gauges is presented.
\noindent We briefly discuss some algebraic and geometric aspects of the generalized Poisson bracket and non--commutative phase space for generalized quantum dynamics, which are analogous to properties of the classical Poisson bracket and ordinary symplectic structure.
In this thesis we study some non perturbative aspects of gauge theories. We give particular emphasis on the understanding of dual confinement of magnetic monopoles by using flux tube configurations.
We carry out a perturbative study of the Leigh-Strassler deformed N=4 SYM theory in order to verify that the trihedral Delta(27) symmetry holds in the quantum theory. We show that the Delta(27) symmetry is preserved to two loops (at finite N) by explicitly computing the superpotential. The perturbative superpotential is not holomorphic in the couplings due to finite contributions. However, there exist coupling constant redefinitions that restore holomorphy. Interestingly, the same redefinitions appear (in the work of Jack, Jones and North[hep-ph/9603386]) if one requires the three-loop anomalo…
: Algebraic properties of orbifold models on arbitrary Riemann surfaces are investigated. The action of mapping class group transformations and of standard geometric operations is given explicitly. An infinite dimensional extension of the quantum group is presented.
In this thesis we investigate some aspects of quantum field theories from a holographic perspective. In the first chapters we examine in detail a one-paremeter family of three-dimensional gauge theories by means of their type IIA gravity duals. We analyse features such as their confinement nature, spectrum, entanglement properties or thermal phase transitions. This family interpolates between quasi-conformal and quasi-confining physics. In the last two chapters, we use bottom-up models to study complex conformal field theories and transport properties of dense QCD respectively.
I discuss algorithms for the evaluation of Feynman integrals. These algorithms are based on Hopf algebras and evaluate the Feynman integral to (multiple) polylogarithms.
We consider the Lorentz-violating extended QED involving all nonminimal dimension-5 additive CPT-odd terms. For this theory, we investigate the possibility of generating the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) term of the first order in any of these nonminimal couplings. This term is demonstrated to vanish in certain regularization schemes. We also study the question of higher-derivative divergent contributions and demonstrate that they can be eliminated by considering a given proportionality between the coefficients.
We review some recent work on AdS/CFT duality involving the 3d O(N) Vector Model and AdS4 Higher Spin Gravity. Our construction is based on bi-local collective field theory which provides an off-shell formulation of Higher Spin Gravity with G = 1/N playing the role of a coupling constant. Consequently perturbative and non-perturbative issues of the theory can be studied. For the correspondence based on free CFT's we discuss the nature of bulk 1/N interactions through an S-matrix which is argued to be equal to 1 (Coleman-Mandula theorem). As a consequence in this class of theories nonlinearitie…
An algebraic construction more general and intimately connected with that of Faddeev$^1$, along with its application for generating different classes of quantum integrable models are summarised to complement the recent results of ref. 1 ( L.D. Faddeev, {\it Int. J. Mod. Phys. } {\bf A10}, 1845 (1995) ).
Spontaneous symmetry breaking is studied in the ultralocal limit of a scalar quantum field theory, that is when $E\approx m$ (or infrared limit). In this limit we show that a $ φ^4$ theory in the euclidean space in four-dimensions describes naturally instantons. Furthermore, in the infrared limit we show that there is an exact map between $ φ^4$ with self-dual Yang-Mills theories. The spontaneous symmetry breaking in the infrared limit for a Higgs portal is also considered and we demonstrate how states of higher energy becomes unstable and spread converting a false vacuum in a true one.
In this paper we discuss some aspects of N=1 type I-heterotic string duality in four dimensions. We consider a particular example of a (weak-weak) dual pair where on the type I side there are only D9-branes corresponding to perturbative heterotic description in a certain region of the moduli space. We match the perturbative type I and heterotic tree-level massless spectra via giving certain scalars appropriate vevs, and point out the crucial role of the perturbative superpotential (on the heterotic side) for this matching. We also discuss the role of anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry present in bo…
The method of Symmetries of Feynman Integrals defines for any Feynman diagram a set of partial differential equations. On some locus in parameter space the equations imply that the diagram can be reduced to a linear combination of simpler diagrams. This paper provides a systematic method to determine this locus and the associated reduction through an algebraic method involving factorization of maximal minors.
Recently we provided a microscopic derivation of the exact supergravity profile for the twisted scalar field emitted by systems of fractional D3-branes at a Z2 orbifold singularity. In this contribution we focus on a set-up supporting an N = 2 SYM theory with SU(2) gauge group and Nf=4. We take into account the tower of D-instanton corrections to the source terms for the twisted scalar and find that its profile can be expressed in terms of the chiral ring elements of the gauge theory. We show how the twisted scalar, which at the perturbative level represents the gravity counterpart of the gaug…
Here we discuss the ultraviolet and infrared aspects of the noncommutative counterpart of QED, which is called as noncommutative QED, as well as some infrared dynamics of noncommutative Yang-Mills (NCYM) theory. First we demonstrate that the divergence in the theory can be subtracted by the similar counterterms as in ordinary theory at one loop level. Then the anomalous magnetic moment is calculated to see the infrared aspect of the theory which reflects the violation of Lorentz symmetry. The evaluation of the finite part of the photon vacuum polarization shows that the logarithmically singula…
In these lectures the introduction to algebraic aspects of Bethe Ansatz is given. The applications to the seminal spin 1/2 XXX model is discussed in detail and the generalization to higher spin as well as XXZ and lattice Sine-Gordon model are indicated. The origin of quantum groups and their appearance in CFT models is explained. The text can be considered as a guide to the research papers in this field.
In the first part of this Dissertation, we study non-perturbative aspects of quantum electrodynamics on Riemannian manifolds by using heat kernel asymptotic expansion techniques. Here, we established the existence of a new non-perturbative heat kernel asymptotic expansion for a Laplace type operator on homogeneous Abelian bundles with parallel curvature, and we evaluated explicitly the first three coefficients. As an application, we computed the imaginary part of the non-perturbative effective action in quantum electrodynamics and derived a generalization of the classical Schwinger's result fo…
Using the hierarchical approximation, we discuss the cut-off dependence of the renormalized quantities of a scalar field theory. The naturalness problem and questions related to triviality bounds are briefly discussed. We discuss unphysical features associated with the hierarchical approximation such as the recently observed oscillatory corrections to the scaling laws. We mention a two-parameter family of recursion formulas which allows one to continuously extrapolate between Wilson's approximate recursion formula and the recursion formula of Dyson's hierarchical model. The parameters are the …
This work is devoted to a study of some of the non-perturbative aspects of superstring theory that have come within reach thanks to dualities. The first chapter gives a non-technical zero-equation introduction to these developments intended for readers with a knowledge of quantum field theory (and french). The second chapter introduces the non-perturbative dualities that have been observed in gauge and supergravity theories as well as the non-perturbative BPS spectrum, and presents a novel duality relating the Higgs branches of certain supersymmetric N=2 gauge theories. In the third chapter, w…
At an elementary level, we present some non-perturbative aspects of non-abelian gauge theories in four dimensional space-time. Some rigorous results have been obtained in the framework of supersymmetric theories, and a very rich physics related to the strong-coupling dynamics of gauge fields has been discovered. Some of the new phenomena which appeared may play a significant role in future phenomenological models. However, quantitative computations in non-supersymmetric theories, like quantum chromodynamics, is out of reach for the moment.
We study the exceptional U duality group $E_d$ of M-theory compactified on a d-torus and its representations using Matrix theory. We exhibit the $E_d$ structure and show that p-branes wrapped or unwrapped around the longitudinal direction form representations of the U duality group together with other, more mysterious, states.
Various aspects of the theory of quantum integrable systems are reviewed. Basic ideas behind the construction of integrable ultralocal and nonultralocal quantum models are explored by exploiting the underlying algebraic structures related to the Yang-Baxter equations. Physical meaning of abstract mathematical notions like universal R-matrix, quantized algebras, Sklyanin algebra, braided algebra, Hopf algebra etc. and the role played by them in integrable systems are highlighted. Systematic construction of quantum integrable lattice as well as field models and their exact excitation spectra are…
We revisit non-marginal half-BPS solutions of M-theory in the framework of the possible existence of an underlying E11 Kac-Moody symmetry. In this context, non-marginal BPS solutions of M-theory can be described as exact solutions of the brane sigma-model E10/K(E10), extending results obtained earlier for marginal BPS solutions. We uncover an elegant and simple algebraic structure underlying the bound states by looking at subalgebras embedded in E10. Furthermore, we show that the non-marginal BPS solutions can be obtained from the elementary marginal ones by the action of K(E10) transformation…
The Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation (FWT) is used to separate distinct components of relativistic spinor field, e.g. electron and positron. Usually, the FWT is perturbative, but in some cases there is an involution operator and the transformation can be done exactly. We consider some aspects of an exact FWT and show that, even if the theory does not admit an involution operator, one can use the technique of exact FWT to obtain the conventional perturbative result. Several particular cases can be elaborated as examples.
We analyze the asymptotically free massless scalar $ϕ^3$ quantum field theory in 6 dimensions, using resurgent asymptotic analysis to find the trans-series solutions which yield the non-perturbative completion of the divergent perturbative solutions to the Kreimer-Connes Hopf-algebraic Dyson-Schwinger equations for the anomalous dimension. This scalar conformal field theory is asymptotically free and has a real Lipatov instanton. In the Hopf-algebraic approach we find a trans-series having an intricate Borel singularity structure, with three distinct but resonant non-perturbative terms, each r…
Here we examine the noncommutative counterpart of QED, which is called as noncommutative QED. The theory is obtained by examining the consistent minimal coupling to noncommutative U(1) gauge field. The *-product admits the coupling of the matter with only three varieties of charges, i.e., 0, +1 and -1. Ultraviolet divergence can be absorbed into the rescaling of the fields and the parameters at least at one loop level. To examine the infrared aspect of the theory the anomalous magnetic dipole moment is calculated. The dependence on the direction of photon momentum reflects the Lorentz symmetry…
This manuscript was published as a JINR Preprint E17-10550 in 1977. In view of the recent interest in various new kinds of statistics it seems the results it contains may be still of some interest. It is shown that the second quantization axioms can, in principle, be satisfied with creation and annihilation operators generating (in the case of $n$ pairs of such operators) the Lie algebra $A_n$ of the group $SL(n+1)$. A concept of a Fock space is introduced. The matrix elements of these operators are found.
Single-scale Feynman diagrams yield integrals that are periods, namely projective integrals of rational functions of Schwinger parameters. Algebraic geometry may therefore inform us of the types of number to which these integrals evaluate. We give examples at 3, 4 and 6 loops of massive Feynman diagrams that evaluate to Dirichlet $L$-series of modular forms and examples at 6, 7 and 8 loops of counterterms that evaluate to multiple zeta values or polylogarithms of the sixth root of unity. At 8 loops and beyond, algebraic geometry informs us that polylogs are insufficient for the evaluation of t…
It has recently been shown that generalized connections of the (A)dS space symmetry algebra provide an effective geometric and algebraic framework for all types of gauge fields in (A)dS, both for massless and partially-massless. The equations of motion are equipped with a nilpotent operator called $σ_-$ whose cohomology groups correspond to the dynamically relevant quantities like differential gauge parameters, dynamical fields, gauge invariant field equations, Bianchi identities etc. In the paper the $σ_-$-cohomology is computed for all gauge theories of this type and the field-theoretical in…
These notes are based on the course given by Klaus Fredenhagen at the Les Houches Winter School in Mathematical Physics (January 29 - February 3, 2012) and the course "QFT for mathematicians" given by Katarzyna Rejzner in Hamburg for the Research Training Group 1670 (February 6 -11, 2012). Both courses were meant as an introduction to modern approach to perturbative quantum field theory and are aimed both at mathematicians and physicists.
We present a generalized variational procedure oriented to the algebraic solution of many body Hamiltonians expressed in bosonic and fermionic variables. The method specializes in the non-perturbative regime of the solutions. As an example, we focus on the application of the method to non-perturbative QCD.
We analyze the stability properties shown by KMS states for interacting massive scalar fields propagating over Minkowski spacetime, recently constructed in the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theories by Fredenhagen and Lindner \cite{FredenhagenLindner}. In particular, we prove the validity of the return to equilibrium property when the interaction Lagrangian has compact spatial support. Surprisingly, this does not hold anymore, if the adiabatic limit is considered, namely when the interaction Lagrangian is invariant under spatial translations. Consequently, an equilibrium st…
We investigate perturbative aspects of gravity with a general F(R) Lagrangian, as well as nonperturbative dilatonic solutions. For the first part, we are interested in stability and the definition of asymptotic charges. The main result of this study is that, while generic F(R) theories are stable under metric perturbations, they are expected to show instabilities against curvature perturbations when the Lagrangian includes 1/R terms. For the second part, one is interested on exact solutions, and we explicitly construct kink-like solutions of the Liouville type for the dilaton field for F(R) ha…
Centre-stabilised $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theories on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$ are QCD-like theories that can be engineered to remain weakly-coupled at all energy scales by taking the $S^1$ circle length $L$ to be sufficiently small. In this regime, these theories admit effective long-distance descriptions as Abelian $U(1)^{N-1}$ gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^3$, and semiclassics can be reliably employed to study non-perturbative phenomena such as colour confinement and the generation of mass gaps in an analytical setting. At the perturbative tree level, the long-distance effective theory contains…
In this paper I give an overview of mathematical structures appearing in perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT) in the case of the massless scalar field on Minkowski spacetime. I also show how these relate to Kontsevich-Zagier periods. Next, I review the pAQFT version of the renormalization group flow and reformulate it in terms of Feynman graphs. This allows me to relate Kontsevich-Zagier periods to numbers appearing in computing the pAQFT $β$-function.
We analyze perturbative aspects of gauged matrix models, including those where classically the gauge symmetry is partially broken. Ghost fields play a crucial role in the Feynman rules for these vacua. We use this formalism to elucidate the fact that non-perturbative aspects of N=1 gauge theories can be computed systematically using perturbative techniques of matrix models, even if we do not possess an exact solution for the matrix model. As examples we show how the Seiberg-Witten solution for N=2 gauge theory, the Montonen-Olive modular invariance for N=1*, and the superpotential for the Leig…
We investigate various aspects of invariance under local symmetries in the framework of perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT). Our main result is the proof that the quantum Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) operator, on-shell, can be written as the commutator with the interacting BRST charge. Up to now, this was proven only for a certain class of fields in quantum electrodynamics and in Yang-Mills theory. Our result is more general and it holds in a wide class of theories with local symmetries, including general relativity and the bosonic string. We also comment on other issues related to …
The Sauter-Schwinger effect predicts the creation of electron-positron pairs out of the quantum vacuum by a strong and slowly varying electric field. This effect can be dynamically assisted by an additional weaker time-dependent field, which may drastically enhance the pair-creation probability. In previous studies, it has been found that the enhancement may crucially depend on the temporal shape of this weaker pulse, e.g., a Gaussian profile $\exp\{-(ωt)^2\}$ or a Sauter pulse $1/\cosh^2(ωt)$ behave quite differently. In order to understand this difference, we make a perturbative expansion in…
A new formalism for the perturbative construction of algebraic quantum field theory is developed. The formalism allows the treatment of low dimensional theories and of non-polynomial interactions. We discuss the connection between the Stueckelberg-Petermann renormalization group which describes the freedom in the perturbative construction with the Wilsonian idea of theories at different scales . In particular we relate the approach to renormalization in terms of Polchinski's Flow Equation to the Epstein-Glaser method. We also show that the renormalization group in the sense of Gell-Mann-Low (w…
We study the stability of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD compactified on S^1 using the D3-brane probe realization. We find a phenomenon in which the quark KK mode with the KK number n=1 decays while other KK modes are stable. This is contrary to the ordinary assumption that the state with n=1 is the most stable in quark KK modes. In addition, we show that a massive gauge singlet state carrying the KK number exists stably. This provides a proper candidate for dark matter.
