Recently, we have shown how the interpretation of quantum mechanics due to Lande' can be used to derive from first principles generalized formulas for the operators and some eigenvectors for spin 1/2 Though we gave the operators for all the components of the spin, we did not give the eigenvectors of the operators for the x and y components of the spin. We now give these vectors. In addition, we present a new and simple method of deriving the operators for the x and y components of the spin as well as their vectors from those for the z component. We give a general proof that the operator for the square of the spin is the unit matrix multiplied by the value of the square of the spin.
We point out that T. Tanaka's recent criticism [quant-ph/0603075] of the results of J. Math. Phys. 43, 3944 (2002) [math-ph/0203005] is based on an assumption which was never made in the latter paper, namely that the diagonalizability of an operator implies that it is normal. Therefore, Tanaka's objections regarding this paper are not valid.
We have recently constructed a photon position operator with commuting components. This was long thought to be impossible, but our position eigenvectors have a vortex structure like twisted light. Thus they are not spherically symmetric and the position operator does not transform as a vector, so that previous non-existence arguments do not apply. We find two classes of position eigenvectors and obtain photon wave functions by projection onto the bases of position eigenkets that they define, following the usual rules of quantum mechanics. The hermitian position operator, r0, leads to a Landau-…
Staggered quantum walks on graphs are based on the concept of graph tessellation and generalize some well-known discrete-time quantum walk models. In this work, we address the class of 2-tessellable quantum walks with the goal of obtaining an eigenbasis of the evolution operator. By interpreting the evolution operator as a quantum Markov chain on an underlying multigraph, we define the concept of quantum detailed balance, which helps to obtain the eigenbasis. A subset of the eigenvectors is obtained from the eigenvectors of the double discriminant matrix of the quantum Markov chain. To obtain …
The characterization of an operator by its eigenvectors and eigenvalues allows us to know its action over any quantum state. Here, we propose a protocol to obtain an approximation of the eigenvectors of an arbitrary Hermitian quantum operator. This protocol is based on measurement and feedback processes, which characterize a reinforcement learning protocol. Our proposal is composed of two systems, a black box named environment and a quantum state named agent. The role of the environment is to change any quantum state by a unitary matrix $\hat{U}_E=e^{-iτ\hat{\mathcal{O}}_E}$ where $\hat{\mathc…
We present a set of necessary conditions for the existence of a biorthonormal basis composed of eigenvectors of non-Hermitian operators. As an illustration, we examine these conditions in the case of normal operators. We also provide a generalization of the conditions which is applicable to non-diagonalizable operators by considering not only eigenvectors but also all root vectors.
The analytical expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Klein-Gordon equation for q-deformed Woods-Saxon plus new generalized ring shape potential are derived within the asymptotic iteration method. The obtained eigenvalues are given in a closed form and the corresponding normalized eigenvectors, for any l, are formulated in terms of the generalized Jacobi polynomials for the radial part of the Klein-Gordon equation and associated Legendre polynomials for its angular one. When the shape deformation is canceled, we recover the same solutions previously obtained by the Nikiforov-U…
One and two photon wave functions are derived by projecting the quantum state vector onto simultaneous eigenvectors of the number operator and a recently constructed photon position operator [Phys. Rev A 59, 954 (1999)] that couples spin and orbital angular momentum. While only the Landau-Peierls wave function defines a positive definite photon density, a similarity transformation to a biorthogonal field-potential pair of positive frequency solutions of Maxwell's equations preserves eigenvalues and expectation values. We show that this real space description of photons is compatible with all o…
Based on the quantized electromagnetic field described by the Riemann-Silberstein complex vector $F$, we construct the eigenvector set of $% F$, which makes up an orthonormal and complete representation. In terms of $% F $ we then introduce a new operator which can describe the relative ratio of the left-handed and right-handed polarization states of a polarized photon .In $F^{\prime}s$ eigenvector basis the operator manifestly exhibits a behaviour which is similar to a phase difference between two orientations of polarization of a light beam in classical optics.
We study an eigenvalue problem for a spin matrix arising in the Pauli Lubanski vector operator. Entanglement of the eigenvectors and its connection with degeneracy is discussed.
In biorthogonal quantum mechanics, the eigenvectors of a quasi-Hermitian operator and those of its adjoint are biorthogonal and complete and the probability for a transition from a quantum state to any one of these eigenvectors is positive definite. We apply this formalism to the long standing problem of the position observable in quantum field theory. The dual bases are positive and negative frequency one-particle states created by the field operator and its conjugate and biorthogonality is a consequence of their commutation relations. In these biorthogonal bases the position operator is cova…
In this paper, subnormal operators, not necessarily bounded, are discussed as generalized observables. In order to describe not only the information about the probability distribution of the output data of their measurement but also a framework of their implementations, we introduce a new concept compound-system-type normal extension, and we derive the compound-system-type normal extension of a subnormal operator, which is defined from an irreducible unitary representation of the algebra su(1,1). The squeezed states are characterized as the eigenvectors of an operator from this viewpoint, and …
We propose a wave operator method to calculate eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large parameter-dependent matrices, using an adaptative active subspace. We consider a hamiltonian which depends on external adjustable or adiabatic parameters, using adaptative projectors which follow the successive eigenspaces when the adjustable parameters are modified. The method can also handle non-hermitian hamiltonians. An iterative algorithm is derived and tested through comparisons with a standard wave operator algorithm using a fixed active space and with a standard block-Davidson method. The proposed appr…
The quantum mechanical expression relating two commuting operators is reformulated such that the power method (also called method of moments) for iteratively calculating eigenvalues and eigenvectors becomes applicable. The new iterative scheme thus obtained allows to pre-select a quantum number of one of the two commuting operators and then calculate a corresponding eigenvalue of the other operator. The result is the common eigenvector of the eigenvalue pair. Among others the method may be used to calculate excited states, cope with degeneracy and/or accelerate convergence. Small example calcu…
Trying to interpret B. Zilber's project on model theory of quantum mechanics we study a way of building limit models from finite-dimensional approximations. Our point of view is that of metric model theory, and we develop a method of taking ultraproducts of unbounded operators. We first calculate the Feynman propagator for the free particle as defined by physicists as an inner product $\langle x_{0}| K^{t}| x_{1}\rangle $ of the eigenvector $| x_{0}\rangle $ of the position operator with eigenvalue $x_{0}$ and $K^{t}(| x_{1}\rangle )$, where $K^{t}$ is the time evolution operator. However, due…
When an eigenvector of a semi-bounded operator is positive, we show that a remarkably simple argument allows to obtain upper and lower bounds for its associated eigenvalue. This theorem is a substantial generalization of Barta-like inequalities and can be applied to non-necessarily purely quadratic Hamiltonians. An application for a magnetic Hamiltonian is given and the case of a discrete Schrodinger operator is also discussed. It is shown how this approach leads to some explicit bounds on the ground-state energy of a system made of an arbitrary number of attractive Coulombian particles.
We show that the quantization of a simple damped system leads to a self-adjoint Hamiltonian with a family of complex generalized eigenvalues. It turns out that they correspond to the poles of energy eigenvectors when continued to the complex energy plane. Therefore, the corresponding generalized eigenvectors may be interpreted as resonant states. We show that resonant states are responsible for the irreversible quantum dynamics of our simple model.
We have recently proposed a strategy to produce, starting from a given hamiltonian $h_1$ and a certain operator $x$ for which $[h_1,xx^\dagger]=0$ and $x^\dagger x$ is invertible, a second hamiltonian $h_2$ with the same eigenvalues as $h_1$ and whose eigenvectors are related to those of $h_1$ by $x^\dagger$. Here we extend this procedure to build up a second hamiltonian, whose eigenvalues are different from those of $h_1$, and whose eigenvectors are still related as before. This new procedure is also extended to crypto-hermitian hamiltonians.
The 'relativistic' Heun equation is an 8-coupling difference equation that generalizes the 4-coupling Heun differential equation. It can be viewed as the time-independent Schrödinger equation for an analytic difference operator introduced by van Diejen. We study Hilbert space features of this operator and its 'modular partner', based on an in-depth analysis of the eigenvectors of a Hilbert-Schmidt integral operator whose integral kernel has a previously known relation to the two difference operators. With suitable restrictions on the parameters, we show that the commuting difference operators …
Dynamics of a periodically time dependent quantum system is reflected in the features of the eigenstates of the Floquet operator. Of the special importance are their localization properties quantitatively characterized by the eigenvector entropy, the inverse participation ratio or the eigenvector statistics. Since these quantities depend on the choice of the eigenbasis, we suggest to use the overcomplete basis of coherent states, uniquely determined by the classical phase space. In this way we define the mean Wehrl entropy of eigenvectors of the Floquet operator and demonstrate that this quant…
The Lie algebra of the group SU(2) is constructed from two deformed oscillator algebras for which the deformation parameter is a root of unity. This leads to an unusual quantization scheme, the {J2,Ur} scheme, an alternative to the familiar {J2,Jz} quantization scheme corresponding to common eigenvectors of the Casimir operator J2 and the Cartan operator Jz. A connection is established between the eigenvectors of the complete set of commuting operators {J2,Ur} and mutually unbiased bases in spaces of constant angular momentum.
