Non-Fuchsian Singularities in Quantum Mechanics

A modification of the spiked harmonic oscillator is studied in the case for which the perturbation potential contains both an inverse power and a linear term. It is then possible to evaluate trial functions by solving an integral equation due to the occurrence of the linear term. The general form of such integral equation is obtained by using a Green-function method, and adding a modified Bessel function of second kind which solves an homogeneous problem with Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin.

Bohmian Mechanics at Space-Time Singularities. II. Spacelike Singularities

We develop an extension of Bohmian mechanics by defining Bohm-like trajectories for quantum particles in a curved background space-time containing a spacelike singularity. As an example of such a metric we use the Schwarzschild metric, which contains two spacelike singularities, one in the past and one in the future. Physics of singular points in quantum mechanics

Defects or junctions in materials serve as a source of interactions for particles, and in idealized limits they may be treated as singular points yielding contact interactions. Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics under Point Singularities

We provide a systematic study on the possibility of supersymmetry (SUSY) for one dimensional quantum mechanical systems consisting of a pair of lines $\R$ or intervals [-l, l] each having a point singularity. We consider the most general singularities and walls (boundaries) at $x = \pm l$ admitted quantum mechanically, using a U(2) family of parameters to specify one singularity and similarly a U(1) family of parameters to specify one wall. On singularities of the mixed state phase

A recent proposal of Sjoqvist et.al. to extend Pancharatnam's criterion for phase difference between two different pure states to the case of mixed states in quantum mechanics is analyzed and the existence of phase singularities in the parameter space of an interference experiment with particles in mixed states pointed out. In the vicinity of such singular points the phase changes sharply and precisely at these points it becomes undefined. Optical realization of relativistic non-Hermitian quantum mechanics

Light propagation in distributed feedback optical structures with gain/loss regions is shown to provide an accessible laboratory tool to visualize in optics the spectral properties of the one-dimensional Dirac equation with non-Hermitian interactions. Spectral singularities and PT symmetry breaking of the Dirac Hamiltonian are shown to correspond to simple observable physical quantities and related to well-known physical phenomena like resonance narrowing and laser oscillation.

Subdynamics theory in the functional approach to quantum mechanics

The formalism of subdynamics is extended to the functional approach of quantum systems, and used for the Friedrichs model, in which diagonal singularities in states and observables are included. We compute in this approach the generalized eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the Liouvulle-Von Newmann operator, using an iterative scheme. As complex generalized eigenvalues are obtained, the decay rates of unstable modes are included in the spectral decomposition.

Supersymmetry and discrete transformations on S^1 with point singularities

We investigate N-extended supersymmetry in one-dimensional quantum mechanics on a circle with point singularities. For any integer n, N=2n supercharges are explicitly constructed and a class of point singularities compatible with supersymmetry is clarified. Key ingredients in our construction are n sets of discrete transformations, each of which forms an su(2) algebra of spin 1/2. The degeneracy of the spectrum and spontaneous supersymmetry breaking are briefly discussed.

On the Global Existence of Bohmian Mechanics

We show that the particle motion in Bohmian mechanics, given by the solution of an ordinary differential equation, exists globally: For a large class of potentials the singularities of the velocity field and infinity will not be reached in finite time for typical initial values. A substantial part of the analysis is based on the probabilistic significance of the quantum flux. We elucidate the connection between the conditions necessary for global existence and the self-adjointness of the Schrödinger Hamiltonian.

Anomalies in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics

It is shown that if a potential in a nonrelativistic system of Fermi particles has a sufficiently strong singularity, anomalies (nonzero values of quantities formally equal to zero) will probably appear. For different types of singularities (in paticular, for the Coulomb potential), anomalies associated with the energy and total number of particles in the system are calculated. These anomalies may be beneficial in deriving a semiclassical description of electron- nuclear systems.

Nonlocal continuous variable correlations and violation of Bell's inequality for light beams with topological singularities

We consider optical beams with topological singularities which possess Schmidt decomposition and show that such classical beams share many features of two mode entanglement in quantum optics. We demonstrate the coherence properties of such beams through the violations of Bell inequality for continuous variables using the Wigner function. This violation is a consequence of correlations between the $(x, p_x)$ and $(y, p_y)$ spaces which mathematically play the same role as nonlocality in quantum mechanics. Spontaneous generation of singularities in paraxial optical fields

In nonrelativistic quantum mechanics the spontaneous generation of singularities in smooth and finite wave functions, is a well understood phenomenon also occurring for free particles. We use the familiar analogy between the two-dimensional Schroedinger equation and the optical paraxial wave equation to define a new class of square-integrable paraxial optical fields which develop a spatial singularity in the focal point of a weakly-focusing thin lens. We continue our study of the quantum mechanical motion in the $x^2y^2$ potentials for $n=2,3$, which arise in the spatially homogeneous limit of the Yang-Mills (YM) equations. In the present paper, we develop a new approach to the calculation of the partition function $Z(t)$ beyond the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation by adding a harmonic (Higgs) potential and taking the limit $v\to 0$, where $v$ is the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. On Non-Linear Quantum Mechanics, Space-Time Wavefunctions, and Compatibility with General Relativity

In previous papers I expounded non-linear Schrodingerist quantum mechanics as a solution of the Measurement Problem. Here I show that NLQM is compatible with Einstein's theory of General Relativity. The extension to curved space-times presumes adoption of "space-time wavefunctions" (sometimes called "multi-time wavefunctions") and some additional algebraic structure: a "bitensor" supplementing Einstein's metric tensor. This kind of matter may violate the Strong Energy Condition even without a mass term, possibly with implications for the formation of singularities within Black Holes.

Loop quantum cosmology and singularities

Loop quantum gravity is believed to eliminate singularities such as the big bang and big crunch singularity. This belief is based on studies of so-called loop quantum cosmology which concerns symmetry-reduced models of quantum gravity. Analytical solutions of basic models in quantum optics

The recent progress in the analytical solution of models invented to describe theoretically the interaction of matter with light on an atomic scale is reviewed. The methods employ the classical theory of linear differential equations in the complex domain (Fuchsian equations).
