We study the complex geometric phase acquired by the resonant states of an open quantum system which evolves irreversibly in a slowly time dependent environment. In analogy with the case of bound states, the Berry phase factors of resonant states are holonomy group elements of a complex line bundle with structure group C*. In sharp contrast with bound states, accidental degeneracies of resonances produce a continuous closed line of singularities formally equivalent to a continuous distribution of "magnetic" charge on a "diabolical" circle, in consequence, we find different classes of topologically inequivalent non-trivial closed paths in parameter space.
In quantum mechanics, accidental degeneracy refers to energy degeneracy that occurs coincidentally, without any protection by symmetry. Here, we prove a theorem stating that any two-fold degeneracy (accidental or not) in a quantum system is protected by a novel hidden symmetry, which can be expressed by an antiunitary operator with its square being -1. In this sense, the so-called accidental degeneracy is not really accidental, and this actually implies a hidden antiunitary symmetry.
Coupled excitonic structures are found in natural and artificial light harvesting systems where optical transitions link different excitation manifolds. In systems with symmetry, some optical transitions are allowed, while others are forbidden. Here we examine an excitonic ring structure and identify an accidental degeneracy between two categories of double-excitation eigenstates with distinct symmetries and optical transition properties. To understand the accidental degeneracy, a complete selection rule between two arbitrary excitation manifolds is derived with a physically motivated proof. R…
In this paper we propose a symmetric q-deformed Tamm-Dancoff (S-TD) oscillator algebra and study its representation, coordinate realization, and main properties. In particular, the non-Fibonacci (more exactly, quasi-Fibonacci) nature of S-TD oscillator is established, the possibility of relating it to certain p,q-deformed oscillator family shown, the occurrence of the pairwise accidental degeneracy proven. We also find the coherent state for the S-TD oscillator and show that it satisfies completeness relation. Main advantage of the S-TD model over usual Tamm-Dancoff oscillator is that due to (…
A general treatment of the spectral problem of quantum graphs and tight-binding models in finite Hilbert spaces is given. The direct spectral problem and the inverse spectral problem are written in terms of simple algebraic equations containing information on the topology of a quantum graph. The inverse problem is shown to be combinatorial, and some low dimensional examples are explicitly solved. For a {\it window\ }graph, a commutator and anticommutator algebra (superalgebra) is identified as the culprit behind accidental degeneracy in the form of triplets, where configurational symmetry {\it…
A system of bosons in a harmonic trap is cooled via their interactions with a thermal reservoir. We derive the master equation that governs the evolution of the system and may describe diverse physical situations: laser cooling, symphatetic cooling, etc. We investigate in detail the dynamics of the gas in the Lamb-Dicke limit, whereby the size of the trap is small in comparison to the de Broglie wavelength of the reservoir quanta. In this case, the dynamics is characterized by two time scales. First, an equilibrium is reached on a fast time scale within the degenerated subspaces of the system.…
A novel family of exactly solvable quantum systems on curved space is presented. The family is the quantum version of the classical Perlick family, which comprises all maximally superintegrable 3-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with spherical symmetry. The high number of symmetries (both geometrical and dynamical) exhibited by the classical systems has a counterpart in the accidental degeneracy in the spectrum of the quantum systems. This family of quantum problem is completely solved with the techniques of the SUSYQM (supersymmetric quantum mechanics). We also analyze in detail the ordering p…
We study main features of the exotic case of q-deformed oscillators (so-called Tamm-Dancoff cutoff oscillator) and find some special properties: (i) degeneracy of the energy levels E_{n_1} = E_{n_1+1}, n_1\ge 1, at the {\em real value} q=\sqrt{\frac{n_1}{n_1+2}} of deformation parameter, as well as the occurrence of other degeneracies E_{n_1} = E_{n_1+k}, for k \ge 2, at the corresponding values of q which depend on both n_1 and k; (ii) the position and momentum operators X and P {\em commute on the state} |m> if q is fixed as q=\frac{m}{m+1}, that implies unusual uncertainty relation; (iii) t…
In this paper we construct coherent states for the two-dimensional Morse potential. We find the dependence of the spectrum on the physical parameters and use this to understand the emergence of accidental degeneracies. It is observed that, under certain conditions pertaining to the irrationality of the parameters, accidental degeneracies do not appear and as such energy levels are at most two-fold degenerate. After defining a non-degenerate spectrum and set of states for the 2D Morse potential, we construct generalised coherent states and discuss the spatial distribution of their probability d…
We study the Loschmidt echo and Berry phase in a nonlinear system transported around a double and triple degeneracy. The nonlinearity of the system makes the Berry phase different from that in linear systems. We propose a witness of nonlinearity for the nonlinear system and show its dependence on the parameters of the system, taking the standard Landau-Zener model as an example. We calculate the Loschmidt echo(LE) or quantum fidelity in the quantum dynamics under perturbations around the degeneracy, and establish a connection between the LE and the witness of nonlinearity. These phases and Los…
We develop a geometric construction to prove the inevitability of the electronic ground-state (adiabatic) Berry phase for a class of Jahn-Teller models with maximal continuous symmetries and N > 2 intersecting electronic states. Given that vibronic ground-state degeneracy in JT models may be seen as a consequence of the electronic Berry phase, and that any JT problem may be obtained from the subset we investigate in this letter by symmetry-breaking, our arguments reveal the fundamental origin of the vibronic ground-state degeneracy of JT models.
An adiabatic change of a bound state along a closed circuit in the parameter space can induces holonomies not only in the phase of the state, but also in the associated eigenspace and eigenvalue. The former is the well-known Berry phase while the latter, namely the exotic holonomy, is found a decade ago and its origin has not been understood yet. By extending the parameter into the complex number, the correspondence of the exotic holonomies and the degeneracy of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, or the exceptional points, is revealed. We show that this explains all the known non-trivial character…
Berry phase effect plays a central role in many mesoscale condensed matter and quantum chemical systems that are naturally under the environmental influence of dissipation. We propose and microscopically derive a prototypical quantum coherent tunneling model around a monopole or conical potential intersection in order to address the intriguing but overlooked interplay between dissipation and topologically nontrivial Berry phase effect. We adopt the instanton approach with both symmetry analysis and accurate numerical solutions that consistently incorporate nonperturbative dissipation and Berry…
So far, the well known two branches of real discrete spectrum of complex PT-symmetric Scarf II potential are kept isolated. Here, we suggest that these two need to be brought together as doublets: $E^n_{\pm}(λ)$ with $n=0,1,2...$. Then if strength $(λ)$ of the imaginary part of the potential is varied smoothly some pairs of real eigenvalue curves can intersect and cross each other at $λ=λ_{*}$; this is unlike one dimensional Hermitian potentials. However, we show that the corresponding eigenstates at $λ=λ_{*}$ are identical or linearly dependent denying degeneracy in one dimension, once again.…
Recently developed parity ($\mathcal{P}$) and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetric non-Hermitian quantum theory is envisioned to have far-reaching implications in basic science and applications. It is known that the $PT$-inner product is defined with respect to a non-canonical, system-generated dynamical symmetry, namely the $C$ symmetry. Here, we show that the $PT$ invariant equation of motion is defined by the simultaneous time evolution of the state $ψ(t)$ and the operator $C(t)$ to manifest unitarity. The dynamical $C$ operator lends itself to a new term in the Berry phase. The $PT$ sym…
Diabolical points (degeneracies) can naturally occur in spectra of two-dimensional quantum systems and classical wave resonators due to simple symmetries. Geometric Berry phase is associated with these spectral degeneracies. Here, we demonstrate a diabolical point and the corresponding Berry phase in the spectrum of hybrid light-matter quasiparticles -- exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. It is well known that sufficiently strong optical pumping can drive exciton-polaritons to quantum degeneracy, whereby they form a macroscopically populated quantum coherent state similar to a B…
We propose a pair of the complex Berry curvatures associated with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and its Hermitian adjoint to reveal new physics in non-Hermitian systems. We give the complex Berry curvature and Berry phase for the two-dimensional non-Hermitian Dirac model. The imaginary part of the complex Berry phase induces the quantum Hall susceptance such that the quantum Hall conductance is generalized to quantum Hall admittance for non-Hermitian systems, which implies that the non-Hermiticity of systems could induce an intrinsic quantum capacitance or inductance of systems depending on th…
For a spin subjected to an adiabatically changing magnetic field, the solid angle result as embodied by a rotation operator is the only path-dependent factor in the quantum evolution operator. For a charged particle, the infinite degeneracy calls for a rigorous investigation. We find that in this case, it is the product of the rotation operator and a path-ordered magnetic translation operator that enters into the evolution operator and determines the geometric phase. This result agrees with the fact that the instantaneous hamiltonian is invariant under magnetic translation as well as rotation.…
Non-Abelian statistics is a phenomenon of topologically protected non-Abelian Berry phases as we exchange quasiparticle excitations. In this paper, we construct a Z_N rotor model that realizes a self-dual Z_N Abelian gauge theory. We find that lattice dislocation defects in the model produce topologically protected degeneracy. Even though dislocations are not quasiparticle excitations, they resemble non-Abelian anyons with quantum dimension sqrt(N). Exchanging dislocations can produces topologically protected projective non-Abelian Berry phases. The dislocations, as projective non-Abelian anyo…
