The dynamics of the spin-boson Hamiltonian is considered in the stochastic approximation. The Hamiltonian describes a two-level system coupled to an environment and is widely used in physics, chemistry and the theory of quantum measurement. We demonstrate that the method of the stochastic approximation which is a general method of consideration of dynamics of an arbitrary system interacting with environment is powerful enough to reproduce qualitatively striking results by Leggett at al. found earlier for this model. The result include an exact expression of the dynamics in terms of the spectral density and show an appearance of two most interesting regimes for the system, i.e. pure oscillating and pure damping ones. Correlators describing environment are also computed.
Dissipative and stochastic effects in the geometric phase of a qubit are taken into account using a geometrical description of the corresponding open--system dynamics within a canonical Langevin framework based on a Caldeira--Leggett like Hamiltonian. By extending the Hopf fibration $S^{3}\to S^{2}$ to include such effects, the exact geometric phase for a dissipative qubit is obtained, whereas numerical calculations are used to include finite temperature effects on it.
We develop a hierarchical functional derivative method to investigate the reduced dynamics of a quantum dissipative system within the framework of a stochastic decoupling description. Keeping only the lowest order truncation of the hierarchical functional derivatives, one can recover the second order Nakajima-Zwanzig quantum master equation. Taking into account the higher-order corrections, our method can be implemented as a highly efficient numerical scheme for a general quantum dissipative system beyond the usual Markovian, rotating-wave, and weak-coupling approximations.
We investigate the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of a hybrid open system consisting of one qubit and one qutrit by employing a stochastic Schrödinger equation to generate diffusive quantum trajectories. We have established an exact quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation for the dissipative qubit-qutrit system coupled to a bosonic heat bath at zero temperature. As an important application, the non-Markovian QSD equation is employed to simulate the entanglement decay and generation measured by negativity. Finally, some steady state properties of the hybrid system are also discussed.
We theoretically study the influence of the noise strength on the excitation of the Brillouin propagation modes in a dissipative optical lattice. We show that the excitation has a resonant behavior for a specific amount of noise corresponding to the precise synchronization of the Hamiltonian motion on the optical potential surfaces and the dissipative effects associated with optical pumping in the lattice. This corresponds to the phenomenon of stochastic resonance. Our results are obtained by numerical simulations and correspond to the analysis of microscopic quantities (atomic spatial distrib…
A systematic procedure for deriving the master equation of a dissipative system is reported in the framework of stochastic description. For the Caldeira-Leggett model of the harmonic-oscillator bath, a detailed and elementary derivation of the bath-induced stochastic field is presented. The dynamics of the system is thereby fully described by a stochastic differential equation and the desired master equation would be acquired with statistical averaging. It is shown that the existence of a closed-form master equation depends on the specificity of the system as well as the feature of the dissipa…
We have observed the phenomenon of stochastic resonance on the Brillouin propagation modes of a dissipative optical lattice. Such a mode has been excited by applying a moving potential modulation with phase velocity equal to the velocity of the mode. Its amplitude has been characterized by the center-of-mass (CM) velocity of the atomic cloud. At Brillouin resonance, we studied the CM-velocity as a function of the optical pumping rate at a given depth of the potential wells. We have observed a resonant dependence of the CM velocity on the optical pumping rate, corresponding to the noise strengt…
We present the dissipative dynamics of the field of two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM) with Stark shift in dispersive approximation and investigate the influence of dissipation on entanglement. We show the coherence properties of the field can be affected by the dissipative cavity when nonlinear two-photon process is involved.
In this work we study the stochastic resonance (SR) effect in a driven dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model. The SR effect is systematically studied in the semiclassical and full quantum frameworks and in both cases we find that SRs simultaneously occur for the optical and atomic freedoms. In particular, at zero temperature quantum SR can be induced merely by vacuum fluctuations. The qualitative features of semiclassical SR and quantum SR are similar, but the parameter region of quantum SR are shifted from the semiclassical region due to the widely-used factorization in obtaining semiclassical eq…
The probability operator for a generic non-equilibrium quantum system is derived. The corresponding stochastic, dissipative Schrödinger equation is also given. The dissipative and stochastic propagators are linked by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem that is derived from the unitary condition on the time propagator. The dissipative propagator is derived from thermodynamic force and entropy fluctuation operators that are in general non-linear.
We propose a procedure to fully reconstruct the time-dependent coefficients of convolutionless non-Markovian dissipative generators via a finite number of experimental measurements. By combining a tomography based approach with a proper data sampling, our proposal allows to relate the time-dependent coefficients governing the dissipative evolution of a quantum system to experimentally accessible quantities. The proposed scheme not only provides a way to retrieve full information about potentially unknown dissipative coefficients but also, most valuably, can be employed as a reliable consistenc…
We provide the exact analytic solution of the stochastic Schrödinger equation describing an harmonic oscillator interacting with a non-Markovian and dissipative environment. This result represents an arrival point in the study of non-Markovian dynamics via stochastic differential equations. It is also one of the few exactly solvable models, for infinite dimensional systems. We compute the Green's function; in the case of a free particle, and with an exponentially correlated noise, we discuss the evolution of Gaussian wave functions.
Motivated by the search for a quantum analogue of the macroscopic fluctuation theory, we study quantum spin chains dissipatively coupled to quantum noise. The dynamical processes are encoded in quantum stochastic differential equations. They induce dissipative friction on the spin chain currents. We show that, as the friction becomes stronger, the noise induced dissipative effects localize the spin chain states on a slow mode manifold, and we determine the effective stochastic quantum dynamics of these slow modes. We illustrate this approach by studying the quantum stochastic Heisenberg spin c…
A Bohmian analysis of the so-called Schrödinger-Langevin or Kostin nonlinear differential equation is provided to study how thermal fluctuations of the environment affects the dynamics of the wave packet from a quantum hydrodynamical point of view. In this way, after obtaining the Schrödinger-Langevin-Bohm equation from the Kostin equation its application to simple but physically insightful systems such as the Brownian-Bohmian motion, motion in a gravity field and transmission through a parabolic repeller is studied. % If a time-dependent Gaussian ansatz for the probability density is assumed,…
We propose an efficient numerical method to compute configuration averages of observables in disordered open quantum systems whose dynamics can be unraveled via stochastic trajectories. We prove that the optimal sampling of trajectories and disorder configurations is simply achieved by considering one random disorder configuration for each individual trajectory. As a first application, we exploit the present method to the study the role of disorder on the physics of the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in two different regimes: (i) for strong interactions, we explore the dissipative physi…
We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in quantum dissipative systems by employing a hierarchical equations of motion approach which is beyond the usual Markovian approximation, the rotating wave approximation, and the perturbative approximation. The quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno dynamics of a biased qubit-boson model and a biased qutrit-boson model are provided as illustrative examples. It is found that (i) there exists multiple Zeno-anti-Zeno crossover phenomena, (ii) the non-Markovian characteristic of the bath may be favorable for the accessibility of the Zeno dynamics, and (ii…
A microscopic derivation of the master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model with cavity losses is given, taking into account the terms in the dissipator which vary with frequencies of the order of the vacuum Rabi frequency. Our approach allows to single out physical contexts wherein the usual phenomenological dissipator turns out to be fully justified and constitutes an extension of our previous analysis [Scala M. {\em et al.} 2007 Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 013811], where a microscopic derivation was given in the framework of the Rotating Wave Approximation.
The mathematical equivalence between finite state stochastic machine and non-dissipative and dissipative quantum tight-binding and Schroedinger model is derived. Stochastic Finite state machine is also expressed by classical epidemic model and can reproduce the quantum entanglement emerging in the case of electrostatically coupled qubits described by von-Neumann entropy both in non-dissipative and dissipative case. The obtained results shows that quantum mechanical phenomena might be simulated by classical statistical model as represented by finite state stochastic machine. It includes the qua…
We investigate how to describe the dissipative spin dynamics of the driven-dissipative Dicke model, describing $N$ two-level atoms coupled to a cavity mode, after adiabatic elimination of the cavity mode. To this end, we derive a Redfield master equation which goes beyond the standard secular approximation and large detuning limits. We show that the secular (or rotating wave) approximation and the large detuning approximation both lead to inadequate master equations, that fail to predict the Dicke transition or the damping rates of the atomic dynamics. In contrast, the full Redfield theory cor…

In this paper we give fully analytical description of the dynamics of a collection of $N$-Frenkel excitons in high density regime dispersively coupled to a single mode cavity field, in the presence of both exciton and cavity-field dissipations. By using excitonic operators as q-deformed bosonic operators for the system, we solve analytically the Liouville equation for the density operator at zero temperature and investigate the influence of the number of excitons and the effect of both dissipations on dynamical behavior of the system. We use the solution of master equation to explore the dissi…
Recently the complete characterization of a general Gaussian dissipative system having a unique pure steady state was obtained in [Koga and Yamamoto 2012, Phys. Rev. A 85, 022103]. This result provides a clear guideline for engineering an environment such that the dissipative system has a desired pure steady state such as a cluster state. In this paper, we describe the system in terms of a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) so that the environment channels can be explicitly dealt with. Then a physical meaning of that characterization, which cannot be seen without the QSDE represen…
Careful monitoring of harmonically bound (or as a limiting case, free) masses is the basis of current and future gravitational wave detectors, and of nanomechanical devices designed to access the quantum regime. We analyze the effects of stochastic localization models for state vector reduction, and of related models for environmental decoherence, on such systems, focusing our analysis on the non-dissipative forced harmonic oscillator, and its free mass limit. We derive an explicit formula for the time evolution of the expectation of a general operator in the presence of stochastic reduction o…
In this article, we explore the dissipation dynamics of a strongly coupled multidimensional system in contact with a Markovian bath following a system-bath approach. We use in this endeavour the recently developed stochastic Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree approach within the Monte Carlo wave packet formalism [J.Chem.Phys.156, 094109 (2022)]. The method proved to yield thermalized ensembles of wave packets when intramolecular coupling is weak. To treat strongly coupled systems, new Lindblad dissipative operators are constructed as linear combinations of the system coordinates and as…
Dissipative time crystals can appear in spin systems, when the $Z_2$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian is broken by the environment, and the square of total spin operator $S^2$ is conserved. In this manuscript, we relax the latter condition and show that time-translation-symmetry breaking collective oscillations persist, in the thermodynamic limit, even in the absence of spin symmetry. We engineer an \textit{ad hoc} Lindbladian using power-law decaying spin operators and show that time-translation symmetry breaking appears when the decay exponent obeys $0<η\leq 1$. This model shows a surprisingly ri…
We present an approach to the numerical simulation of open quantum many-body systems based on the semiclassical framework of the discrete truncated Wigner approximation. We establish a quantum jump formalism to integrate the quantum master equation describing the dynamics of the system, which we find to be exact in both the noninteracting limit and the limit where the system is described by classical rate equations. We apply our method to simulation of the paradigmatic dissipative Ising model, where we are able to capture the critical fluctuations of the system beyond the level of mean-field t…
We theoretically examine the driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer in the optical bistable regime. Various approximation schemes based on a Gutzwiller mean field decoupling are applied and compared. Depending on the system parameters we show that a decoupling with respect to the real space or to the reciprocal space can be more accurate. The Gutzwiller decoupling is applied both at the level of the density matrix and for the wavefunction during a quantum trajectory simulation. The latter is shown to be a more accurate approximation. A Gaussian approximation for the non-homogeneous anti-bonding…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a biased two-level system (TLS) coupled to a harmonic oscillator (HO), the latter interacting with an Ohmic environment. Using Van-Vleck perturbation theory and going to second order in the coupling between TLS and HO, we show how the Hamiltonian of the TLS-HO system can be diagonalized analytically. Our model represents an improvement to the usually used Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian as an initial rotating wave approximation is avoided. By assuming a weak coupling to the thermal bath, analytical expressions for the time evolution of the populations of the TL…
We propose a numerical technique based on a combination of short-iterative Lanczos and exact diagonalization methods, suitable for simulating the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of a single qubit interacting with an environment. By choosing a mode discretization method and a flexible bath states truncation scheme, we are able to include in the physical description multiple-excitation processes, beyond weak coupling and Markov approximations. We apply our technique to the simulation of three different model Hamiltonians, which are relevant in the field of adiabatic quantum computat…
We present a systematic approach for the semiclassical treatment of many-body dynamics of interacting, open spin systems. Our approach overcomes some of the shortcomings of the recently developed discrete truncated Wigner approximation (DTWA) based on Monte-Carlo sampling in a discrete phase space that improves the classical treatment by accounting for lowest-order quantum fluctuations. We provide a rigorous derivation of the DTWA by embedding it in a continuous phase space, thereby introducing a hybrid discrete-continuous truncated Wigner approximation (DCTWA). We derive a set of operator-dif…
In this review we deal with open (dissipative and stochastic) quantum systems within the Bohmian mechanics framework which has the advantage to provide a clear picture of quantum phenomena in terms of trajectories, originally in configuration space. The gradual decoherence process is studied from linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equations through Bohmian trajectories as well as by using the so-called quantum-classical transition differential equation through scaled trajectories. This transition is governed by a continuous parameter, the transition parameter, covering these two extreme open dyn…
We study resonant optical excitations of strongly-interacting Rydberg states of atoms in the presence of relaxations. We employ the quantum stochastic (Monte Carlo) wavefunctions to simulate the dissipative dynamics of tens of atoms in two-dimensional lattices. We show that under typical experimental conditions involving slow Rydberg state decay and sizable relaxation of atomic coherences, on the time scale of several microseconds the atomic ensemble approaches a stationary state in which much of the quantum correlations between the atoms have decayed away. The steady state, however, exhibits …
The aim of this paper is two-fold: in probing the statistical mechanical properties of interacting quantum fields, and in providing a field theoretical justification for a stochastic source term in the Boltzmann equation. We start with the formulation of quantum field theory in terms of the Schwinger - Dyson equations for the correlation functions, which we describe by a closed-time-path master ($n = \infty PI$) effective action. When the hierarchy is truncated, one obtains the ordinary closed-system of correlation functions up to a certain order, and from the nPI effective action, a set of ti…
We describe an efficient numerical method for simulating the dynamics and steady states of collective spin systems in the presence of dephasing and decay. The method is based on the Schwinger boson representation of spin operators and uses an extension of the truncated Wigner approximation to map the exact open system dynamics onto stochastic differential equations for the corresponding phase space distribution. This approach is most effective in the limit of very large spin quantum numbers, where exact numerical simulations and other approximation methods are no longer applicable. We benchmar…
We address dissipation effects on the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of an ensemble of spins-1/2 coupled via an Ising interaction. Dissipation is modeled by a (ohmic) bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature and correspond either to the sound modes of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensate or to the zero-point fluctuations of a long transmission line. We consider the dimer comprising two spins and the quantum Ising chain with long-range interactions, and develop a (mathematically and numerically) exact stochastic approach to address non-equilibrium protocols in the presen…
