We theoretically study the influence of the noise strength on the excitation of the Brillouin propagation modes in a dissipative optical lattice. We show that the excitation has a resonant behavior for a specific amount of noise corresponding to the precise synchronization of the Hamiltonian motion on the optical potential surfaces and the dissipative effects associated with optical pumping in the lattice. This corresponds to the phenomenon of stochastic resonance. Our results are obtained by numerical simulations and correspond to the analysis of microscopic quantities (atomic spatial distributions) as well as macroscopic quantities (enhancement of spatial diffusion and pump-probe spectra). We also present a simple analytical model in excellent agreement with the simulations.
We study the interplay between non-Hermitian dynamics and phase synchronization in a system of $\mathcal{N}$ bosonic modes coupled to an auxiliary mode. The linearity of the evolution in such a system allows for the derivation of fully analytical results for synchronization conditions. In contrast, analysis at the level of phase dynamics, followed by a transformation to a collective basis allows a complete reduction to an all-to-all coupled Kuramoto model with known analytical solutions. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for systems ranging from a few modes to the macroscopic limit…
The possibility for detuned spins to display synchronous oscillations in local observables is analyzed in the presence of collective dissipation and incoherent pumping. We show that there exist two distinct mechanisms that can give rise to synchronization, that is, non-degenerate subradiance and coalescence. The former, known as transient synchronization, is here generalized in the presence of pumping. It is due to long-lasting coherences leading to a progressive frequency selection. In the same set-up, even if under different conditions, coalescence and exceptional points are found which can …
The interaction of a quantum system, which is not accessible by direct measurement, with an external probe can be exploited to infer specific features of the system itself. We introduce a probing scheme based on the emergence of spontaneous quantum synchronization between an out-of-equilibrium qubit, in contact with an external environment, and a probe qubit. Tuning the frequency of the probe leads to a transition between synchronization in phase and antiphase. The sharp transition between these two regimes is locally accessible by monitoring the probe dynamics alone and allows one to reconstr…

We study numerically the behavior of qubit coupled to a quantum dissipative driven oscillator (resonator). Above a critical coupling strength the qubit rotations become synchronized with the oscillator phase. In the synchronized regime, at certain parameters, the qubit exhibits tunneling between two orientations with a macroscopic change of number of photons in the resonator. The life times in these metastable states can be enormously large. The synchronization leads to a drastic change of qubit radiation spectrum with appearance of narrow lines corresponding to recently observed single artifi…
For a prototype quadratic Hamiltonian describing a driven, dissipative system, exact matrix elements of the reduced density matrix are obtained from a generating function in terms of the normal characteristic functions. The approach is based on the Heisenberg equations of motion and operator calculus. The special and limiting cases are discussed.
The dispersive interaction between a two-level atom and a quantized field is studied. We consider besides a time dependent linear amplification and dissipative processes. In order to solve the master equation for this system, we use superoperator techniques.
Synchronization phenomena have been recently reported in the quantum realm at atomic level due to collective dissipation. In this work we propose a dimer lattice of trapped atoms realizing a dissipative spin model where quantum synchronization occurs instead in presence of local dissipation. Atoms synchronization is enabled by the inhomogeneity of staggered local losses in the lattice and is favored by an increase of spins detuning. A comprehensive approach to quantum synchronization based on different measures considered in the literature allows to identify the main features of different sync…
We analyze the static and dynamical properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground state phase diagram for an ohmic and a subohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques and intuitive arguments. Second, employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the…
We address dissipation effects on the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of an ensemble of spins-1/2 coupled via an Ising interaction. Dissipation is modeled by a (ohmic) bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature and correspond either to the sound modes of a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein (quasi-)condensate or to the zero-point fluctuations of a long transmission line. We consider the dimer comprising two spins and the quantum Ising chain with long-range interactions, and develop a (mathematically and numerically) exact stochastic approach to address non-equilibrium protocols in the presen…
Using Liouville space and superoperator formalism we consider pure stationary states of open and dissipative quantum systems. We discuss stationary states of open quantum systems, which coincide with stationary states of closed quantum systems. Open quantum systems with pure stationary states of linear oscillator are suggested. We consider stationary states for the Lindblad equation. We discuss bifurcations of pure stationary states for open quantum systems which are quantum analogs of classical dynamical bifurcations.

We present a formalism for which a dissipative system is given by a variational principle. The formalism applies to dynamical systems where its trajectory is monotonic. Subsequently, we derive its Lagrangian and Hamiltonian. From the Hamiltonian, we quantize canonically the classical particle in a viscous media. We study the free quantum particle in a viscous media and the dissipative quantum tunnelling. It is found that the dissipation influences tunnelling probability by a factor that closely resembles the result of Caldeira and Leggett.
We present a numerical path-integral iteration scheme for the low dimensional reduced density matrix of a time-dependent quantum dissipative system. Our approach simultaneously accounts for the combined action of a microscopically modelled pure-dephasing type coupling to a continuum of harmonic oscillators representing, e.g., phonons, and further environmental interactions inducing non-Hamiltonian dynamics in the inner system represented, e.g., by Lindblad type dissipation or relaxation. Our formulation of the path-integral method allows for a numerically exact treatment of the coupling to the…
The interplay of synchronization and topological band structures with symmetry protected midgap states under the influence of driving and dissipation is largely unexplored. Here we consider a trimer chain of electron shuttles, each consisting of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a quantum dot positioned between two electronic leads. Each shuttle is subject to thermal dissipation and undergoes a bifurcation towards self-oscillation with a stable limit cycle if driven by a bias voltage between the leads. By mechanically coupling the oscillators together, we observe synchronized motion at the ends…
We study the quantum synchronization of a single spin driven by an external semiclassical signal for spin numbers larger than $S = 1$, the smallest system to host a quantum self-sustained oscillator. The occurrence of interference-based quantum synchronization blockade is found to be qualitatively different for integer vs. half-integer spin number $S$. We explain this phenomenon as the interplay between the external signal and the structure of the limit cycle in the generation of coherence in the system. Moreover, we show that the same dissipative limit-cycle stabilization mechanism leads to v…
The identification of parameters in the Hamiltonian that describes complex many-body quantum systems is generally a very hard task. Recent attention has focused on such problems of Hamiltonian tomography for networks constructed with two-level systems. For open quantum systems, the fact that injected signals are likely to decay before they accumulate sufficient information for parameter estimation poses additional challenges. In this paper, we consider use of the gateway approach to Hamiltonian tomography \cite{Burgarth2009,Burgarth2009a} to complex quantum systems with a limited set of state …
We analyze the origin and properties of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles in a driven-dissipative experimental setup, where they are collectively damped by a bad cavity mode and incoherently pumped by a Raman laser. Starting from the mean-field equations, we explain the emergence of chaos by way of quasiperiodicity -- presence of two or more incommensurate frequencies. This is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. The equations of motion have a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two ensembles. However, some of the attractors of these equat…
The synchronization of coherent states of light has long been an important subject of basic research and technology. Recently, a new concept for analog computers has emerged where this synchronization process can be exploited to solve computationally hard problems - potentially faster and more energy-efficient than what can be achieved with conventional computer technology today. The unit cell of such systems consists of two coherent centers that are coupled to one another in a controlled manner. Here, we experimentally characterize and analyze the synchronization process of two photon Bose-Ei…
A microscopic derivation of the master equation for the Jaynes-Cummings model with cavity losses is given, taking into account the terms in the dissipator which vary with frequencies of the order of the vacuum Rabi frequency. Our approach allows to single out physical contexts wherein the usual phenomenological dissipator turns out to be fully justified and constitutes an extension of our previous analysis [Scala M. {\em et al.} 2007 Phys. Rev. A {\bf 75}, 013811], where a microscopic derivation was given in the framework of the Rotating Wave Approximation.
In this paper, we study the decoherence property of synchronization master equation for networks of qubits interconnected by swapping operators. The network Hamiltonian is assumed to be diagonal with different entries so that it might not be commutative with the swapping operators. We prove a theorem establishing a general condition under which almost complete decohernece is achieved, i.e., all but two of the off-diagonal entries of the network density operator asymptotically tend to zero. This result explicitly shows that quantum dissipation networks tend to forget the information initially e…
Given a constant of motion for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with linear dissipation in the velocity, the problem to get the Hamiltonian for this system is pointed out, and the quantization up to second order in the perturbation approach is used to determine the modification on the eigenvalues when dissipation is taken into consideration. This quantization is realized using the constant of motion instead of the Hamiltonian.
It has been recently realized that dissipative processes can be harnessed and exploited to the end of coherent quantum control and information processing. In this spirit we consider strongly dissipative quantum systems admitting a non-trivial manifold of steady states. We show how one can enact adiabatic coherent unitary manipulations e.g., quantum logical gates, inside this {steady-state} manifold by adding a weak, time-rescaled, Hamiltonian term into the system's Liouvillian. The effective long-time dynamics is governed by a projected Hamiltonian which results from the interplay between the …

For a one-dimensional dissipative system with position depending coefficient, two constant of motion are deduce. These constants of motion bring about two Hamiltonians to describe the dynamics of same classical system. However, their quantization describe the dynamics of two completely different quantum systems.
We show that a large class of dissipative systems can be brought to a canonical form by introducing complex co-ordinates in phase space and a complex-valued hamiltonian. A naive canonical quantization of these systems lead to non-hermitean hamiltonian operators. The excited states are unstable and decay to the ground state . We also compute the tunneling amplitude across a potential barrier.
Recently, several platforms were proposed and demonstrated a proof-of-principle for finding the global minimum of the spin Hamiltonians such as the Ising and XY models using gain-dissipative quantum and classical systems. The implementation of dynamical adjustment of the gain and coupling strengths has been established as a vital feedback mechanism for analog Hamiltonian physical systems that aim to simulate spin Hamiltonians. Based on the principle of operation of such simulators we develop a novel class of gain-dissipative algorithms for global optimisation of NP-hard problems and show its p…

Given any covariance matrix corresponding to a so-called pure Gaussian state, a linear quantum system can be designed to achieve the assigned covariance matrix. In most cases, however, one might obtain a system that is difficult to realize in practice. In this paper, we restrict our attention to a special class of linear quantum systems, i.e., systems with diagonal passive Hamiltonian and a single dissipative channel. The practical implementation of such a system would be relatively simple. We then parametrize the class of pure Gaussian state covariance matrices that can be achieved by this pa…
We derive effective Hamiltonians for a single dipolar emitter coupled to a metal nanoparticle (MNP) with particular attention devoted to the role of losses. For small particles sizes, absorption dominates and a non hermitian effective Hamiltonian describes the dynamics of the hybrid emitter-MNP nanosource. We discuss the coupled system dynamics in the weak and strong coupling regimes offering a simple understanding of the energy exchange, including radiative and non radiative processes. We define the plasmon Purcell factors for each mode. For large particle sizes, radiative leakages can signif…
A generalization of canonical quantization which maps a dynamical operator to a dynamical superoperator is suggested. Weyl quantization of dynamical operator, which cannot be represented as Poisson bracket with some function, is considered. The usual Weyl quantization of observables is a specific case of suggested quantization. This approach allows to define consistent quantization procedure for non-Hamiltonian and dissipative systems. Examples of the harmonic oscillator with friction (generalized Lorenz-Rossler-Leipnik-Newton equation), the Fokker-Planck-type system and Lorenz-type system are…
We discuss topology in dissipative quantum systems from the perspective of quantum trajectories. The latter emerge in the unraveling of Markovian quantum master equations and/or in continuous quantum measurements. Ensemble-averaging quantum trajectories at the occurrence of quantum jumps, i.e., the jump times, gives rise to a discrete, deterministic evolution which is highly sensitive to the presence of dark states. We show for a broad family of translation-invariant collapse models that the set of dark state-inducing Hamiltonians imposes a nontrivial topological structure on the space of Hami…

The energy spectrum of bosonic excitations from a condensate is given by the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian constructed from a bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian in general even though the system is essentially Hermitian. In other words, two types of non-Hermiticity can coexist: one from the bosonic BdG nature and the other from the open quantum nature. In this paper, we propose boundary-dependent dynamical instability. We first define the bosonic dissipative BdG Hamiltonian in terms of Green's function in Nambu space and discuss the correct particle-hole symmetry of the c…
Quantum mechanics of Hamiltonian (non-dissipative) systems uses Lie algebra and analytic group (Lie group). In order to describe non-Hamiltonian (dissipative) systems in quantum theory we need to use non-Lie algebra and analytic quasigroup (loop). The author derives that analog of Lie algebra for quantum non-Hamiltonian systems is commutant Lie algebra and analog of Lie group for these systems is analytic commutant associative loop (Valya loop). A commutant Lie algebra is an algebra such that commutant (a subspace which is generated by all commutators) is a Lie subalgebra. Valya loop is a non-…
We study dissipative transport of spontaneously emitting atoms in a 1D standing-wave laser field in the regimes where the underlying deterministic Hamiltonian dynamics is regular and chaotic. A Monte Carlo stochastic wavefunction method is applied to simulate semiclassically the atomic dynamics with coupled internal and translational degrees of freedom. It is shown in numerical experiments and confirmed analytically that chaotic atomic transport can take the form either of ballistic motion or a random walking with specific statistical properties. The character of spatial and momentum diffusion…
