We analyze the static and dynamical properties of two Ising-coupled quantum spins embedded in a common bosonic bath as an archetype of dissipative quantum mechanics. First, we elucidate the ground state phase diagram for an ohmic and a subohmic bath using a combination of bosonic numerical renormalization group (NRG), analytical techniques and intuitive arguments. Second, employing the time-dependent NRG we investigate the system's rich dynamical behavior arising from the complex interplay between spin-spin and spin-bath interactions. Interestingly, spin oscillations can synchronize due to the proximity of the common non-Markovian bath and the system displays highly entangled steady states for certain nonequilibrium initial preparations. We complement our non-perturbative numerical results by exact analytical solutions when available and provide quantitative limits on the applicability of the perturbative Bloch-Redfield approach at weak coupling.
The interplay of synchronization and topological band structures with symmetry protected midgap states under the influence of driving and dissipation is largely unexplored. Here we consider a trimer chain of electron shuttles, each consisting of a harmonic oscillator coupled to a quantum dot positioned between two electronic leads. Each shuttle is subject to thermal dissipation and undergoes a bifurcation towards self-oscillation with a stable limit cycle if driven by a bias voltage between the leads. By mechanically coupling the oscillators together, we observe synchronized motion at the ends…
Using method of quantum trajectories we study the behavior of two identical or different superconducting qubits coupled to a quantum dissipative driven resonator. Above a critical coupling strength the qubit rotations become synchronized with the driving field phase and their evolution becomes entangled even if two qubits may significantly differ from one another. Such entangled qubits can radiate entangled photons that opens new opportunities for entangled wireless communication in a microwave range.
We develop the synchronization theory of microwave induced zero-resistance states (ZRS) for two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field. In this theory the dissipative effects lead to synchronization of cyclotron phase with driving microwave phase at certain resonant ratios between microwave and cyclotron frequencies. This synchronization produces stabilization of electron transport along edge channels and at the same time it gives suppression of dissipative scattering on local impurities and dissipative conductivity in the bulk, thus creating the ZRS phases at that frequency ratios. The …
We demonstrate tunable dissipative interactions between optically trapped exciton-polariton condensates. We apply annular shaped nonresonant optical beams to both generate and confine each condensate to their respective traps, pinning their natural frequencies. Coupling between condensates is realized through the finite escape rate of coherent polaritons from the traps leading to robust phase locking with neighboring condensates. The coupling is controlled by adjusting the polariton propagation distance between neighbors. This permits us to map out regimes of both strong and weak dissipative c…
We analyze the origin and properties of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles in a driven-dissipative experimental setup, where they are collectively damped by a bad cavity mode and incoherently pumped by a Raman laser. Starting from the mean-field equations, we explain the emergence of chaos by way of quasiperiodicity -- presence of two or more incommensurate frequencies. This is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. The equations of motion have a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two ensembles. However, some of the attractors of these equat…
We discuss the emergence of spontaneous synchronization for an open spin-pair system interacting only via a common environment. Under suitable conditions, and even in the presence of detuning between the natural precession frequencies of the two spins, they are shown to reach a long-lasting transient behavior where they oscillate in phase. We explore the connection between the emergence of such a behavior and the establishment of robust quantum correlations between the two spins, analyzing differences between dissipative and dephasing effects.
We report the first experimental demonstration of quantum synchronization. This is achieved by performing a digital simulation of a single spin-$1$ limit-cycle oscillator on the quantum computers of the IBM Q System. Applying an external signal to the oscillator, we verify typical features of quantum synchronization and demonstrate an interference-based quantum synchronization blockade. Our results show that state-of-the-art noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers are powerful enough to implement realistic dissipative quantum systems. Finally, we discuss limitations of current quantum hardw…
We study synchronization of two dissipatively coupled Van der Pol oscillators in the quantum regime. Due to quantum noise strict frequency locking is absent and is replaced by a crossover from weak to strong frequency entrainment. We discuss the differences to the behavior of one quantum Van der Pol oscillator subject to an external drive. Moreover, we describe a possible experimental realization of two coupled quantum van der Pol oscillators in an optomechanical setting.
Synchronization in oscillatory systems is a frequent natural phenomenon and is becoming an important concept in modern physics. Nanomechanical resonators are ideal systems for studying synchronization due to their controllable oscillation properties and engineerable nonlinearities. Here we demonstrate synchronization of two nanomechanical oscillators via a photonic resonator, enabling optomechanical synchronization between mechanically isolated nanomechanical resonators. Optical backaction gives rise to both reactive and dissipative coupling of the mechanical resonators, leading to coherent os…
We present a framework for the realization of dissipative evolutions of spin-boson models, including multiphoton exchange dynamics, as well as nonlinear transition rates. Our approach is based on the implementation of a generalized version of a dissipative linear quantum Rabi model. The latter comprises a linearly coupled spin-boson term, spin rotations, and standard dissipators. We provide numerical simulations of illustrative cases supporting the good performance of our method. Our work allows for the simulation of a large class of fundamentally different quantum models where the effect of d…
We report the experimental observation of mutual synchronization of magnetic nanooscillators driven by pure spin current generated by nonlocal spin injection. We show that the oscillators efficiently synchronize due to the direct spatial overlap of the dynamical modes excited by spin current, which is facilitated by the large size of the auto-oscillation area inherent to these devices. The synchronization occurs within an interval of the driving current determined by the competition between the dynamic nonlinearity that facilitates synchronization, and the short-wavelength magnetic fluctuation…
Traditionally the charge ratchet effect is considered as a consequence of the extrinsic spatial asymmetry engineered by external asymmetric periodic potentials. Here we demonstrate that electrically and magnetically driven dissipative systems with spin-orbit interactions represent an exception from this standard idea. The charge and spin ratchet currents appear just due to the coexistence of quantum dissipation with the intrinsic spatial asymmetry of the spin-orbit coupling. The extrinsic spatial asymmetry is inessential.
Generating robust entanglement among solid-state spins is key for applications in quantum information processing and precision sensing. We show here a dissipative approach to generate such entanglement among the hyperfine coupled electron nuclear spins using the rapid optical decay of electronic excited states. The combined dark state interference effects of the optical and microwave driving fields in the presence of spontaneous emission from the short-lived excited state leads to a dissipative formation of an entangled steady state. We show that the dissipative entanglement is generated for a…
We have proposed a method to synchronize multiple spin-transfer torque oscillators based on spin pumping, inverse spin Hall, and spin Hall effects. The proposed oscillator system consists of a series of nano-magnets in junction with a normal metal with high spin-orbit coupling, and an accumulative feedback loop. We conduct simulations to demonstrate the effect of modulated charge currents in the normal metal due to spin pumping from each nano-magnet. We show that the interplay between the spin Hall effect and inverse spin Hall effect results in synchronization of the nano-magnets.
The phase and the frequency of an exciton polariton condensate excited by a nonresonant pump can be efficiently manipulated by an external coherent light. Being tuned close to the resonance with the condensate eigenfrequency, the external laser light imposes its frequency to the condensate and locks its phase, thereby manifesting a synchronization effect. The conditions of formation of the phase synchronized regime are determined. The synchronization of a couple of closely spaced polariton condensates by a spatially uniform coherent light is examined. At the moderate strength of the coherent d…
We are reporting a new type of synchronization, termed dancing synchronization, between two spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) coupled through spin waves. Different from the known synchronizations in which two STNOs are locked with various fixed relative phases, in this new synchronized state two STNOs have the same frequency, but their relative phase varies periodically within the common period, resulting in a dynamic waving pattern. The amplitude of the oscillating relative phase depends on the coupling strength of two STNOs, as well as the driven currents. The dancing synchronization turn…
We propose a scheme for deterministic generation and long-term stabilization of entanglement between two electronic spin qubits confined in spatially separated quantum dots. Our approach relies on an electronic quantum bus, consisting either of quantum Hall edge channels or surface acoustic waves, that can mediate long-range coupling between localized spins over distances of tens of micrometers. Since the entanglement is actively stabilized by dissipative dynamics, our scheme is inherently robust against noise and imperfections.
We investigate dissipative phase transitions in an open central spin system. In our model the central spin interacts coherently with the surrounding many-particle spin environment and is subject to coherent driving and dissipation. We develop analytical tools based on a self-consistent Holstein-Primakoff approximation that enable us to determine the complete phase diagram associated with the steady states of this system. It includes first and second-order phase transitions, as well as regions of bistability, spin squeezing and altered spin pumping dynamics. Prospects of observing these phenome…
Spin torque oscillators placed onto a nonmagnetic heavy metal show synchronized auto-oscillations due to the coupling originating from spin Hall magnetoresistance effect. Here, we study a system having two spin torque oscillators under the effect of the spin Hall torque, and show that switching the external current direction enables us to control the phase difference of the synchronization between in-phase and antiphase.
We investigate analytically and numerically the synchronization dynamics of dipolarly coupled vortex based Spin-Torque Nano Oscillators (STNO) with different pillar diameters. We identify the critical interpillar distances on which synchronization occurs as a function of their diameter mismatch. We obtain numerically a phase diagram showing the transition between unsynchronized and synchronized states and compare it to analytical predictions we make using Thiele approach. Our study demonstrates that for relatively small diameters differences the synchronization dynamics can be described qualit…
Non-linear magnetization dynamics in ferromagnetic nanoelements excited by the spin-polarized dc-current is one of the most intensively studied phenomena in solid state magnetism. Despite immense efforts, synchronization of oscillations induced in several such nanoelements (spin-torque driven nanooscillators, or STNO) still represents a major challenge both from the fundamental and technological points of view. In this paper we propose a system where synchronization of any number of STNOs, represented by magnetization vortices inside squared nanoelements, can be easily achieved. Using full-sca…
We study dynamics of a serial array of spin-torque-oscillators with a parallel inductor-capacitor-resistor (LCR) load. In a large range of parameters the fully synchronous regime, where all the oscillators have the same state and the output field is maximal, is shown to be stable. However, not always such a robust complete synchronization develops from the random initial state, in many cases nontrivial clustering is observed, with a partial synchronization resulting in a quasiperiodic or chaotic mean field dynamics.
Due to their nonlinear properties, spin transfer nano-oscillators can easily adapt their frequency to external stimuli. This makes them interesting model systems to study the effects of synchronization and brings some opportunities to improve their microwave characteristics in view of their applications in information and communication technologies and to design innovative computing architectures. So far, mutual synchronization of spin transfer nano-oscillators through propagating spin-waves and exchange coupling in a common magnetic layer has been demonstrated. Here we show that the dipolar i…
We study mutual synchronization in double nanoconstriction-based spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) under weak in-plane fields ($μ_0H_\mathrm{IP}$ = 30-40 mT) and also investigate its angular dependence. We compare SHNOs with different nano-constriction spacings of 300 and 900 nm. In all devices, mutual synchronization occurs below a certain critical angle, which is higher for the 300 nm spacing than for the 900 nm spacing, reflecting the stronger coupling at shorter distances. Alongside the synchronization, we observe a strong second harmonic consistent with predictions that the synchronizati…
A strategy for a scalable synchronization of an array of spin-Hall oscillators (SHOs) is illustrated. In detail, we present micromagnetic simulations of two and five SHOs realized by means of couples of triangular golden contacts on the top of a Pt/CoFeB/Ta trilayer. Results highlight that the synchronization occurs for the whole current region that gives rise to the excitation of self-oscillations. This is linked to the role of the magnetodipolar coupling, which is the phenomenon driving the synchronization when the distance between oscillators is not too large. Synchronization turns out to b…
We present a theory for the dissipation of electronic spins trapped in quantum dots due to their coupling to the host lattice acoustic phonon modes. Based on the theory of dissipative two level systems for the spin dynamics, we derive a relation between the spin dissipative bath, the electron confinement, and the electron-phonon interaction. We find that there is an energy scale, typically smaller than the electronic lateral confinement energy, which sets the boundary between different dissipative regimes .
Considering an array of spin torque transfer nano oscillators (STNOs), we have investigated the synchronization property of the system under the action of a common periodically driven applied external magnetic field by numerically analyzing the underlying system of Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski (LLGS) equations for the macro-spin variables. We find the novel result that the applied external magnetic field can act as a medium to induce synchronization of periodic oscillations, both in-phase and anti-phase, even without coupling through spin current, thereby leading to the exciting possibi…
We report on a time-domain study of parametric synchronization in a magnetic tunnel junction based spin torque nano-oscillator (STNO). Time-domain measurements of the instantaneous frequency ($f_{i}$) of a parametrically synchronized STNO show random short-term unlocking of the STNO signal for low injected radio-frequency (RF) power, which cannot be revealed in time-averaged frequency domain measurements. Macrospin simulations reproduce the experimental results and reveal that the random unlocking during synchronization is driven by thermal fluctuations. We show that by using a high injected R…
We study dissipative spin-spin coupling in dispersive regime mediated by virtual photons in a microwave cavity. Dissipative coupling between magnetization of each magnetic material and the cavity photons is established by means of two phase shifted driving forces acting on each magnetization. We show that when only one of the magnetization is dissipatively coupled to the cavity, the cavity-mediated spin-spin coupling too, exhibits mode level attraction in the spectrum. By tuning the phase parameter at each ferromagnetic insulator we can shift the order of "dark" and "bright" collective modes w…
The key feature of a quantum spin coupled to a harmonic bath---a model dissipative quantum system---is competition between oscillator potential energy and spin tunneling rate. We show that these opposing tendencies cause environmental entanglement through superpositions of adiabatic and antiadiabatic oscillator states, which then stabilizes the spin coherence against strong dissipation. This insight motivates a fast-converging variational coherent-state expansion for the many-body ground state of the spin-boson model, which we substantiate via numerical quantum tomography.
We have studied the dissipative dynamics of a driven electronic spin trapped in a quantum dot. We consider the dissipative mechanism as due to the indirect coupling of the electronic spin to acoustic phonons via the spin-orbit/electron-phonon couplings. Using an effective spectral function of the dissipative phonon bath, we evaluated the expectation values of the spin components through the Bloch-Redfield theory. We show that due to a sharp bath resonance present in the effective spectral function, with typical energy much smaller than the electronic confinement energy, the dissipative spin ha…
We demonstrate that the synchronization of an array of electrically coupled spin torque nano-oscillators (STNO) modelled by Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski (LLGS) equation can be enhanced appreciably in the presence of a common external microwave magnetic field. The applied microwave magnetic field stabilizes and enhances the regions of synchronization in the parameter space of our analysis, where the oscillators are exhibiting synchronized oscillations thereby emitting improved microwave power. To characterize the synchronized oscillations we have calculated the locking range in the domai…
The concept of spin torque driven high frequency magnetization dynamics has opened up the field of spintronics to non-linear physics, potentially in complex networks of dynamical systems. In the scarce demonstrations of synchronized spin-torque oscillators, the local nature of the magnetic coupling that is used have largely hampered a good understanding and thus the control of the synchronization process. Here we take advantage of the non-local nature of an electrical coupling to mutually synchronize spin-torque oscillators through their self-emitted microwave currents. The control of the sync…
This paper micromagnetically studies the magnetization dynamics driven by the spin-Hall effect in a Platinum/Permalloy bi-layer. For a certain field and current range, the excitation of a uniform mode, characterized by a power with a spatial distribution in the whole ferromagnetic cross section, is observed. We suggest to use the ferromagnet of the bi-layer as basis for the realization of an array of spin-torque oscillators (STOs): the Permalloy ferromagnet will act as shared free layer, whereas the spacers and the polarizers are built on top of it. Following this strategy, the frequency of th…
A mutual synchronization of spin-torque oscillators coupled through current injection is studied theoretically. Models of electrical coupling in parallel and series circuits are proposed. Solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, excitation of in-phase or antiphase synchronization, depending on the ways the oscillators are connected, is found. It is also found from both analytical and numerical calculations that the current-frequency relations for both parallel and series circuits are the same as that for a single spin-torque oscillator.
We derive thermomagnonic torque and its "$β$-type" dissipative correction from the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The "$β$-type" dissipative correction describes viscous coupling between magnetic dynamics and magnonic current and it stems from spin mistracking of the magnetic order. We show that thermomagnonic torque is important for describing temperature gradient induced motion of skyrmions in helical magnets while dissipative correction plays an essential role in generating transverse Magnus force. We propose to detect such skyrmionic motion by employing the transverse spin Se…
A theoretical study on how synchronization and resonance-like phenomena in superparamagnetic tunnel junctions can be driven by spin-transfer torques is presented. We examine the magnetization of a superparamagnetic free layer that reverses randomly between two well-defined orientations due to thermal fluctuations, acting as a stochastic oscillator. When subject to an external ac forcing this system can present stochastic resonance and noise-enhanced synchronization. We focus on the roles of the mutually perpendicular damping-like and field-like torques, showing that the response of the system …
We predict a new physical mechanism explaining the electron spin precession frequency focusing effect observed recently in singly charged quantum dots exposed to a periodic train of resonant circularly polarized short optical pulses [A. Greilich et al, Science 317, 1896 (2007), Ref. 1]. We show that electron spin precession in an external magnetic field and a field of nuclei creates a Knight field oscillating at the frequency of nuclear spin resonance. This field drives the projection of the nuclear spin onto magnetic field to the value that makes the electron spin precession frequency a multi…
Synchronization and chaos caused by alternating current and microwave field in a spin torque oscillator consisting of a perpendicularly magnetized free layer and an in-plane magnetized reference layer is comprehensively studied theoretically. A forced synchronization by the alternating current is observed in numerical simulation over wide ranges of its amplitude and frequency. An analytical theory clarifies that the nonlinear frequency shift, as well as the spin-transfer torque asymmetry, plays a key role in determining locking range and phase difference between the oscillator and current. Cha…
In this paper, we propose to control the strength of phase-locking between two dipolarly coupled vortex based spin-torque nano-oscillators by placing an intermediate oscillator between them. We show through micromagnetic simulations that the strength of phase-locking can be largely tuned by a slight variation of current in the intermediate oscillator. We develop simplified numerical simulations based on analytical expressions of the vortex core trajectories that will be useful for investigating large arrays of densely packed spin-torque oscillators interacting through their stray fields.
We investigate experimentally the synchronization of a vortex based spin transfer oscillator to an external rf current whose frequency is at multiple integers, as well as half integer, of the oscillator frequency. Through a theoretical study of the locking process, we highlight both the crucial role of the symmetries of the spin torques acting on the magnetic vortex and the nonlinear properties of the oscillator on the phase locking process. Through the achievement of a perfect injection locking state, we report a record phase noise reduction down to -90dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset frequency. The ph…
In this paper we present detailed numerical simulation studies on the synchronization of two spin-torque nanooscillators (STNO) in the quasi-1D geometry: magnetization oscillations are induced in a thin NiFe nanostripe by a spin polarized current injected via square-shaped CoFe nanomagnets on the top of this stripe. In a sufficiently large out-of-plane field, a propagating oscillation mode appears in such a system. Due to the absence of the geometrically caused wave decay in 1D systems, this mode is expected to enable a long-distance synchronization between STNOs. Indeed, our simulations predi…
We propose a system of two coupled spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs), one driver and another response, and demonstrate {using numerical studies} the synchronization of the response system to the frequency of the driver system. To this end we use a high speed operational amplifier in the form of a voltage follower which essentially isolates the drive system from the response system. We find the occurrence of 1:1 as w ell as 2:1 synchronization in the system, wherein the oscillators show limit cycle dynamics. An increase in power output is noticed when the two oscillators are locked in 1:1 sy…
We study quantum dissipative dynamics of entanglement in the spin-boson model, described by the generalized master equation. We consider the two opposite limits of pure-dephasing and relaxation models, measuring the degree of entanglement with the concurrence. When the Markovian approximation is employed, entanglement is shown to decay exponentially in both cases. On the other hand, non-Markovian contributions alter the analytic structure of the master equation, resulting in logarithmic decay in the pure dephasing model.
The non-autonomous dynamics of spin-torque oscillators in presence of both microwave current and field at the same frequency can exhibit complex non-isochronous effects. A non-stationary mode hopping between quasi-periodic mode (frequency pulling) and periodic mode (phase locking), and a deterministic phase slip characterized by an oscillatory synchronization transient (non-Adlerian phase slip) after the phase jump of have been predicted. In the latter effect, a wavelet based analysis reveals that in the positive and negative phase jump the synchronization transient occurs at the frequency of …
The collective dynamics in populations of magnetic spin torque oscillators (STO) is an intensely studied topic in modern magnetism. Here, we show that arrays of STO coupled via dipolar fields can be modeled using a variant of the Kuramoto model, a well-known mathematical model in non-linear dynamics. By investigating the collective dynamics in arrays of STO we find that the synchronization in such systems is a finite size effect and show that the critical coupling-for a complete synchronized state-scales with the number of oscillators. Using realistic values of the dipolar coupling strength be…
