Using Liouville space and superoperator formalism we consider pure stationary states of open and dissipative quantum systems. We discuss stationary states of open quantum systems, which coincide with stationary states of closed quantum systems. Open quantum systems with pure stationary states of linear oscillator are suggested. We consider stationary states for the Lindblad equation. We discuss bifurcations of pure stationary states for open quantum systems which are quantum analogs of classical dynamical bifurcations.
In this Letter we consider stationary states of dissipative quantum systems. We discuss stationary states of dissipative quantum systems, which coincide with stationary states of Hamiltonian quantum systems. Dissipative quantum systems with pure stationary states of linear harmonic oscillator are suggested. We discuss bifurcations of stationary states for dissipative quantum systems which are quantum analogs of classical dynamical bifurcations.
Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics represents an emerging paradigm for condensed matter physics, quantum information science, and statistical mechanics. Strongly interacting Rydberg atoms offer an attractive platform to study driven-dissipative dynamics of quantum spin models with long-range order. Here, we explore the conditions under which stationary many-body entanglement persists with near-unit fidelity and high scalability. In our approach, coherent many-body dynamics is driven by Rydberg-mediated laser transitions, while atoms at the lattice boundary reduce the entropy of the many-body sta…
We extend the recent result of bipartite Bell singlet [Carr and Saffman, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf111}, (2013)] to a stationary three-dimensional entanglement between two-individual neutral Rydberg atoms. This proposal makes full use of the coherent dynamics provided by Rydberg mediated interaction and the dissipative factor originating from the spontaneous emission of Rydberg state. The numerical simulation of the master equation reveals that both the target state negativity ${\cal N}(\hatρ_{\infty})$ and fidelity ${\cal F}(\hatρ_{\infty})$ can exceed 99.90%. Furthermore, a steady three-atom sing…
We consider a linear chain made of spins of one half in contact with a dissipative environment for which periodic delta-kicks are applied to the qubits of the linear chain in two different configurations: kicks applied to a single qubit and simultaneous kicks applied to two qubits of the linear chain. In both cases the system reaches a non-equilibrium stationary condition in the long time limit. We study the transient to the quasi stationary states and their properties as function of the kick parameters in the single kicked qubit case and report the emergence of stationary entanglement between…
We investigate the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence in the study of quantum discord for a dissipative cavity QED system, which consists of two noninteracting two-level atoms, each trapped in a dissipative cavity. It is found that the quantum discord between two atoms, which are prepared initially in the X-type quantum states, is not destroyed by the dissipation of the cavities for a finite time interval and the stationary quantum discord can arise in the interaction of atoms with cavities as the time approach to infinite. The transition time is sensitiv…
This paper shows that an arbitrary Gaussian pure state can be deterministically generated in a dissipative open system that has quasi-local interactions between the subsystems and couples to surrounding environment in a local manner. A quasi-local interaction, which means that the interaction occurs among only a few subsystems, is a crucial requirement for practical engineering of a dissipative system. The key idea is that, first, an auxiliary system having local interaction with environment is prepared, and then that auxiliary system is coupled to the underlying target system via a set of two…
Generation of squeezed light and optomechanical instability for dissipative type of opto- mechanical coupling is theoretically addressed for a cavity with the input mirror, serving as a mechanical oscillator, or an equivalent system. The problem is treated analytically for the case of resonance excitation or small detunings, mainly focusing on the bad cavity limit. A qualitative difference between the dissipative and purely dispersive coupling is reported. In particular, it is shown that, for the purely dissipative coupling in the bad cavity regime, the backaction is strongly reduced and the s…
We investigate to what extent a suitably chosen system Hamiltonian can counteract local dissipative processes and preserve entanglement in the stationary state. The results determine prospects and limitations of dissipative state preparation schemes based on natural dissipative processes -- in contrast to engineered, typically non-local dissipative schemes. As an exemplary case, we determine the stationary state of two spontaneously decaying two-level systems with optimal entanglement properties. The corresponding system Hamiltonian is derived, and its possible experimental implementation is d…
I propose an archtitecture for the realization of dissipative quantum many-body spin models. The dissipative processes are mediated by interactions with auxiliary particles and lead to a widely tunable class of correlated quantum jump operators. These findings enable the investigation of purely dissipative spin models, where coherent dynamics is entirely absent. I provide a detailed review of a recently introduced variational method to analyze such dissipative quantum many-body systems, and I discuss a specific example in terms of a purely dissipative Heisenberg model, for which I find an addi…
We study the possibility of enhancing the stationary entanglement achievable with two-qubit dissipating into a common environment by means of feedback. We contrast the effect of Markovian with Bayesian feedback and show that, depending on the initial state, the performance of the latter are from 16% to 33% superior.
We consider a model of two qubits dissipating into both local and global environments (generally at non-zero temperatures), with the possibility of interpolating between purely local dissipation and purely global one. The corresponding dissipative dynamical map is characterized in terms of its Kraus operators focusing on the stationary regime. We then determine conditions under which entanglement can be induced by the action of such a map. It results (rather counterintuitively) that in order to have entanglement in the presence of local environment, this latter must be at nonzero temperature.
We study the stationary and nonstationary measurement of a classical force driving a mechanical oscillator coupled to an electromagnetic cavity under two-tone driving. For this purpose, we develop a theoretical framework based on the signal-to-noise ratio to quantify the sensitivity of linear spectral measurements. Then, we consider stationary force sensing and study the necessary conditions to minimise the added force noise. We find that imprecision noise and back-action noise can be arbitrarily suppressed by manipulating the amplitudes of the input coherent fields, however, the force noise p…
Dissipative preparation of a pure steady state usually involves a commutative action of a coherent and a dissipative dynamics on the target state. Namely, the target pure state is an eigenstate of both the coherent and dissipative parts of the dynamics. We show that working in the Zeno regime, i.e. for infinitely large dissipative coupling, one can generate a pure state by a non commutative action, in the above sense, of the coherent and dissipative dynamics. A corresponding Zeno regime pureness criterion is derived. We illustrate the approach, looking at both its theoretical and applicative a…
We consider the non-equilibrium behavior of a central spin system where the central spin is periodically reset to its ground state. The quantum mechanical evolution under this effectively dissipative dynamics is described by a discrete-time quantum map. Despite its simplicity this problem shows surprisingly complex dynamical features. In particular, we identify several metastable time-crystal resonances. Here the system does not relax rapidly to a stationary state but undergoes long-lived oscillations with a period that is an integer multiple of the reset period. At these resonances the evolut…
Recently the complete characterization of a general Gaussian dissipative system having a unique pure steady state was obtained in [Koga and Yamamoto 2012, Phys. Rev. A 85, 022103]. This result provides a clear guideline for engineering an environment such that the dissipative system has a desired pure steady state such as a cluster state. In this paper, we describe the system in terms of a quantum stochastic differential equation (QSDE) so that the environment channels can be explicitly dealt with. Then a physical meaning of that characterization, which cannot be seen without the QSDE represen…
The effects of a local magnetic field on nonequilibrium stationary states (NESS) of the open quantum $XXZ$ spin chain are investigated with a Lindblad master equation approach in the limit of strong dissipation. The local magnetic field is applied to a single bulk spin of the chain while the ends are kept at fixed polarizations by dissipation. We show that suitable changes of the local magnetic field permit to invert the spin current by switching pure NESS with opposite chiralities, while preserving the state purity and achieving optimal transport.
We suggest an extension of the Hilbert Phase Space formalism, which appears to be naturally suited for application to the dissipative (open) quantum systems, such as those described by the non-stationary (time-dependent) Hamiltonians $H(x,p,t)$. A notion of quantum differential is introduced, highlighting the difference between the quantum and classical propagators. The equation of quantum dynamics of the generalised Wigner function in the extended Hilbert phase space is derived, as well as its classical limit, which serves as the generalisation of the classical Liouville equation for the doma…
We study the preparation of coherent quantum states in a two-photon micromaser for applications in quantum metrology. While this setting can be in principle realized in a host of physical systems, we consider atoms interacting with the field of a cavity. We focus on the case of the interaction described by the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian, which cannot be achieved by the conventional approach with three-level atoms coupled to the cavity field at two-photon resonance. We find that additional levels are required in order to cancel Stark shifts emerging in the leading order. Once this is accomplis…
In this work, we study the driven-dissipative dynamics of a coherently-driven spin ensemble with a squeezed, superradiant decay. This decay consists of a sum of both raising and lowering collective spin operators with a tunable weight. The model presents different critical non-equilibrium phases with a gapless Liouvillian that are associated to particular symmetries and that give rise to distinct kinds of non-ergodic dynamics. In Ref. [1] we focus on the case of a strong-symmetry and use this model to introduce and discuss the effect of dissipative freezing, where, regardless of the system siz…
We study the critical behavior of the nonequilibrium dynamics and of the steady states emerging from the competition between coherent and dissipative dynamics close to quantum phase transitions. The latter is induced by the coupling of the system with a Markovian bath, such that the evolution of the system's density matrix can be effectively described by a Lindblad master equation. We devise general scaling behaviors for the out-of-equilibrium evolution and the stationary states emerging in the large-time limit for generic initial conditions, in terms of the parameters of the Hamiltonian provi…
We consider two ensembles of qubit dissipating into two overlapping environments, that is with a certain number of qubit in common that dissipate into both environments. We then study the dynamics of bipartite entanglement between the two ensembles by excluding the common qubit. To get analytical solutions for an arbitrary number of qubit we consider initial states with a single excitation and show that the largest amount of entanglement can be created when excitations are initially located among side (non common) qubit. Moreover, the stationary entanglement exhibits a monotonic (resp. non-mon…
We present a new variational method, based on the matrix product operator (MPO) ansatz, for finding the steady state of dissipative quantum chains governed by master equations of the Lindblad form. Instead of requiring an accurate representation of the system evolution until the stationary state is attained, the algorithm directly targets the final state, thus allowing for a faster convergence when the steady state is a MPO with small bond dimension. Our numerical simulations for several dissipative spin models over a wide range of parameters illustrate the performance of the method and show t…
In this paper we have considered the interaction of a Jaynes and Cummings system with the electromagnetic field in its vacuum state and, solving the dynamical problem, we have analyzed the amount of entanglement induced in the bipartite system (atom + cavity mode) by the common electromagnetic reservoir. This has allowed us to quantitatively characterize the regime under which field-induced cooperative effects are not vanished by dissipation. Once the Decoherence Free Regime is reached, transient entanglement tends to become stationary and, therefore, usable for quantum gate implementation.
The dissipative dynamics of two interacting qubits coupled to independent reservoirs at nonzero temperatures is investigated, paying special attention to the entanglement evolution. The counter-rotating terms in the qubit-qubit interaction give rise to stationary entanglement, traceable back to the ground state structure. The robustness of this entanglement against thermal noise is thoroughly analyzed, establishing that it can be detected at reasonable experimental temperatures. Some effects linked to a possible reservoir asymmetry are brought to light.
We explore the relaxation dynamics of quantum many-body systems that undergo purely dissipative dynamics through non-classical jump operators that can establish quantum coherence. Our goal is to shed light on the differences in the relaxation dynamics that arise in comparison to systems evolving via classical rate equations. In particular, we focus on a scenario where both quantum and classical dissipative evolution lead to a stationary state with the same values of diagonal or "classical" observables. As a basis for illustrating our ideas we use spin systems whose dynamics becomes correlated …
We consider an open bipartite quantum system with dissipative Lindblad type dynamics. In order to study the entanglement of the stationary states, we develop a perturbative approach and apply it to the physically significant case when a purely dissipative perturbation is added to the unperturbed generator which by itself would produce reversible unitary dynamics.
We revisit quantum dynamics of the damped and driven nonlinear oscillator. In the classical case this system has two stationary solutions (the limit cycles) in the certain parameter region, which is the origin of the celebrated bistability phenomenon. The quantum-classical correspondence for the oscillator dynamics is discussed in details.
The properties of some complex many body systems can be modeled by introducing in the dissipative dynamics of each single component a set of kinetic constraints that depend on the state of the neighbor systems. Here, we characterize this kind of dynamics for two quantum systems whose independent dissipative evolutions are defined by a Lindblad equation. The constraints are introduced through a set of projectors that restrict the action of each single dissipative Lindblad channel to the state of the other system. Conditions that guaranty a classical interpretation of the kinetic constraints are…

We present a general method to calculate the quasi-stationary state of a driven-dissipative system coupled to a transmission line (and more generally, to a reservoir) under periodic modulation of its parameters. Using Floquet's theorem, we formulate the differential equation for the system's density operator which has to be solved for a single period of modulation. On this basis we also provide systematic expansions in both the adiabatic and high-frequency regime. Applying our method to three different systems -- two- and three-level models as well as the driven nonlinear cavity -- we propose …
We investigate whether a generic multipartite pure state can be the unique asymptotic steady state of locality-constrained purely dissipative Markovian dynamics. In the simplest tripartite setting, we show that the problem is equivalent to characterizing the solution space of a set of linear equations and establish that the set of pure states obeying the above property has either measure zero or measure one, solely depending on the subsystems' dimension. A complete analytical characterization is given when the central subsystem is a qubit. In the N-partite case, we provide conditions on the su…
We consider an open quantum system, with dissipation applied only to a part of its degrees of freedom, evolving via a quantum Markov dynamics. We demonstrate that, in the Zeno regime of large dissipation, the relaxation of the quantum system towards a pure quantum state is linked to the evolution of a classical Markov process towards a single absorbing state. The rates of the associated classical Markov process are determined by the original quantum dynamics. Extension of this correspondence to absorbing states with internal structure allows us to establish a general criterion for having a Zen…
We study a driven-dissipative Bose-Hubbard model in presence of two-particle losses and an incoherent single-particle drive on each lattice site, leading to a finite-density stationary state. Using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and an impurity solver based on exact diagonalization of the associated Lindbladian, we investigate the regime of strong two-particle losses. Here, a stationary-state quantum Zeno effect emerges, as can be seen in the on-site occupation and spectral function. We show that DMFT captures this effect through its self-consistent bath. We show that, in the deep Zeno reg…
We study the temporal growth of the von Neumann entropy for dissipative quantum walks on networks. By using a phenomenological quantum master equation, the quantum stochastic walk (QSW), we are able to parametrically scan the crossover from purely coherent quantum walks to purely diffusive random walks. In the latter limit the entropy shows a logarithmic growth, which is proportional to the information dimension of the random walk on the network. Here we present results for the von Neumann entropy based on the reduced density operator of the QSW. It shows a similar logarithmic growth for a wid…
Driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems have attracted increasing interest in recent years as they lead to novel classes of quantum many-body phenomena. In particular, mean-field calculations predict limit cycle phases, slow oscillations instead of stationary states, in the long-time limit for a number of driven-dissipative quantum many-body systems. Using a cluster mean-field and a self-consistent Mori projector approach, we explore the persistence of such limit cycles as short range quantum correlations are taken into account in a driven-dissipative Heisenberg model.
We propose a solution to the problem of realizing a predefined and arbitrary pure quantum state, based on the simultaneous presence of coherent and dissipative dynamics, noncommuting on the target state and in the limit of strong dissipation. More precisely, we obtain a necessary and sufficient criterion whereby the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of an open quantum system described by a Lindblad master equation approaches a target pure state in the Zeno regime, i.e., for infinitely large dissipative coupling. We also provide an explicit formula for the characteristic dissipative strength b…
Given any covariance matrix corresponding to a so-called pure Gaussian state, a linear quantum system can be designed to achieve the assigned covariance matrix. In most cases, however, one might obtain a system that is difficult to realize in practice. In this paper, we restrict our attention to a special class of linear quantum systems, i.e., systems with diagonal passive Hamiltonian and a single dissipative channel. The practical implementation of such a system would be relatively simple. We then parametrize the class of pure Gaussian state covariance matrices that can be achieved by this pa…
We study resonant optical excitations of strongly-interacting Rydberg states of atoms in the presence of relaxations. We employ the quantum stochastic (Monte Carlo) wavefunctions to simulate the dissipative dynamics of tens of atoms in two-dimensional lattices. We show that under typical experimental conditions involving slow Rydberg state decay and sizable relaxation of atomic coherences, on the time scale of several microseconds the atomic ensemble approaches a stationary state in which much of the quantum correlations between the atoms have decayed away. The steady state, however, exhibits …
In this paper we study cavity optomechanical systems in which the position of a mechanical oscillator modulates both the resonance frequency (dispersive coupling) and the linewidth (dissipative coupling) of a cavity mode. Using a quantum noise approach we calculate the optical damping and the optically-induced frequency shift. We find that dissipatively coupled systems feature two parameter regions providing amplification and two parameter regions providing cooling. To investigate the strong-coupling regime, we solve the linearized equations of motion exactly and calculate the mechanical and o…
We describe how to characterize dynamical phase transitions in open quantum systems from a purely dynamical perspective, namely, through the statistical behavior of quantum jump trajectories. This approach goes beyond considering only properties of the steady state. While in small quantum systems dynamical transitions can only occur trivially at limiting values of the controlling parameters, in many-body systems they arise as collective phenomena and within this perspective they are reminiscent of thermodynamic phase transitions. We illustrate this in open models of increasing complexity: a th…
We investigate the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model coupled to a thermal bath. Since the isolated model itself exhibits a quantum phase transition, we explore the critical signatures of the open system. Starting from a system-reservoir interaction written in positive definite form, we find that the position of the critical point remains unchanged, in contrast to the popular mean-field prediction. Technically, we employ the polaron transform to be able to study the full crossover regime from the normal to the symmetry-broken phase, which allows us to investigate the fate of quantum-critical points su…
Ever since the insight spreaded that tailored dissipation can be employed to control quantum systems and drive them towards pure states, the field of non-equilibrium quantum mechanics gained remarkable momentum. So far research focussed on emergent phenomena caused by the interplay and competition of unitary Hamiltonian and dissipative Markovian dynamics. In this manuscript we zero in on a so far rather understudied aspect of open quantum systems and non-equilibrium physics, namely the utilization of purely dissipative couplings to explore pure quantum phases and non-equilibrium phase transiti…
