We construct generally applicable short-time perturbative expansions for some fidelities, such as the input-output fidelity, the entanglement fidelity, and the average fidelity. Successive terms of these expansions yield characteristic times for the damping of the fidelities involving successive powers of the Hamiltonian. The second-order results, which represent the damping rates of the fidelities, are extensively discussed. As an interesting application of these expansions, we use them to study the spatially-correlated dissipation of quantum bits. Spatial correlations in the dissipation are described by a correlation function. Explicit conditions are derived for independent decoherence and for collective decoherence.
Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) is an important technique used for coherent quantum controls. In this paper we investigate how the practically-existing dissipation of the system influences on the efficiency of the passage, and thus the fidelities of the SCRAP-based quantum gates. With flux-biased Josephson qubits as a specifical example, our results show clearly that the efficiency of the logic gates implemented by SCRAP are robust against the weak dissipation. The influence due to the non-adiabtic transitions between the adiabatic passages is comparatively significantly small. T…
The principal obstacle to quantum information processing with many qubits is decoherence. One source of decoherence is spontaneous emission which causes loss of energy and information. Inability to control system parameters with high precision is another possible source of error. Strategies aimed at overcoming one kind of error typically increase sensitivity to others. As a solution we propose quantum computing with dissipation-assisted quantum gates. These can be run relatively fast while achieving fidelities close to one. The success rate of each gate operation can, at least in principle, be…
An error prevention procedure based on two-particle encoding is proposed for protecting an arbitrary unknown quantum state from dissipation, such as phase damping and amplitude damping. The schemes, which exhibits manifestation of the quantum Zeno effect, is effective whether quantum bits are decohered independently or cooperatively. We derive the working condition of the scheme and argue that this procedure has feasible practical implementation.
We propose a dissipation engineering scheme that prepares and protects a maximally entangled state of a pair of superconducting qubits. This is done by off-resonantly coupling the two qubits to a low-Q cavity mode playing the role of a dissipative reservoir. We engineer this coupling by applying six continuous-wave microwave drives with appropriate frequencies. The two qubits need not be identical. We show that our approach does not require any fine-tuning of the parameters and requires only that certain ratios between them be large. With currently achievable coherence times, simulations indic…
High-fidelity control of quantum bits is paramount for the reliable execution of quantum algorithms and for achieving fault-tolerance, the ability to correct errors faster than they occur. The central requirement for fault-tolerance is expressed in terms of an error threshold. Whereas the actual threshold depends on many details, a common target is the ~1% error threshold of the well-known surface code. Reaching two-qubit gate fidelities above 99% has been a long-standing major goal for semiconductor spin qubits. These qubits are well positioned for scaling as they can leverage advanced semico…
Quantum teleportation allows for the transfer of arbitrary, in principle, unknown quantum states from a sender to a spatially distant receiver, who share an entangled state and can communicate classically. It is the essence of many sophisticated protocols for quantum communication and computation. In order to realize flying qubits in these schemes, photons are an optimal choice, however, teleporting a photonic qubit has been limited due to experimental inefficiencies and restrictions. Major disadvantages have been the fundamentally probabilistic nature of linear-optics Bell measurements as wel…
Quantum cloning is an essential operation in quantum information and quantum computing. Similar to the `copy' operation in classical computing, the cloning of flying bits for further processing from the solid-state quantum bits in storage is an operation frequently used in quantum information processing. Here we propose a high-fidelity and controllable quantum cloning scheme between solid bits and flying bits. In order to overcome the obstacles from the no-cloning theorem and the weak phonon-photon interaction, we introduce a hybrid optomechanical system that performs both the probabilistic cl…
Atomic-scale logic and the minimization of heating (dissipation) are both very high on the agenda for future computation hardware. An approach to achieve these would be to replace networks of transistors directly by classical reversible logic gates built from the coherent dynamics of a few interacting atoms. As superpositions are unnecessary before and after each such gate (inputs and outputs are bits), the dephasing time only needs to exceed a single gate operation time, while fault tolerance should be achieved with low overhead, by classical coding. Such gates could thus be a spin-off of qua…
We report on fast tunability of an electromagnetic environment coupled to a superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator. Namely, we utilize a recently-developed quantum-circuit refrigerator (QCR) to experimentally demonstrate a dynamic tunability in the total damping rate of the resonator up to almost two orders of magnitude. Based on the theory it corresponds to a change in the internal damping rate by nearly four orders of magnitude. The control of the QCR is fully electrical, with the shortest implemented operation times in the range of 10 ns. This experiment constitutes a fast active rese…
We propose a general approach to implement nonadiabatic geometric single- and two-qubit gates beyond the rotating wave approximation (RWA). This protocol is compatible with most optimal control methods used in previous RWA protocols; thus, it is as robust as (or even more robust than) the RWA protocols. Using counter-rotating effects allows us to apply strong drives. Therefore, we can improve the gate speed by 5--10 times compared to the RWA counterpart for implementing high-fidelity ($\geq 99.99\%$) gates. Such an ultrafast evolution (nanoseconds, even picoseconds) significantly reduces the i…
We propose a protocol for multipartite secret sharing of quantum information through an \textit{amplitude damping} quantum channel. This network is, for example, of two organizations communicating with their own employees connected via classical channels locally. We consider a GHZ state distributed among four members in an asymmetric fashion where the members of a sub-party collaborate to decode the received information at their end. The target is to send two bits of information in \textit{one execution} of the protocol. Firstly, we consider an ideal channel and observe that our protocol enabl…
Quantum Monte Carlo is one of the most powerful numerical tools for studying nonpeturbative properties of quantum many-body systems. However, its application to real-time problems is limited since the complex and highly-oscillating path-integral weight of the real-time evolution harms the important sampling. % , which is the notorious sign problem. In this Letter, we show that some real-time problems in open fermion systems can be simulated using the quantum Monte Carlo. To this end, we prescribe a mapping between a real-time problem in open quantum systems and a statistical problem in non-Her…

A current bottleneck for quantum computation is the realization of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum operations between two and more quantum bits in arrays of coupled qubits. Gates based on parametrically driven tunable couplers offer a convenient method to entangle multiple qubits by selectively activating different interaction terms in the effective Hamiltonian. Here, we study theoretically and experimentally a superconducting qubit setup with two transmon qubits connected via a capacitively coupled tunable bus. We develop a time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff transformation and derive analytic ex…

The family of $n$-bit Toffoli gates, with the two-bit Toffoli gate as the figurehead, are of great interest in quantum information as they can be used as universal gates and in quantum error correction, among other things. We present a single-step implementation of arbitrary $n$-bit Toffoli gates (up to a local change of basis), based on resonantly driving a single qubit that has a strong Ising coupling to $n$ other qubits. The setup in the two-qubit case turns out to be identical to the universal Barenco gate. The gate time and error are, in theory, independent of the number of control qubits…
