An error prevention procedure based on two-particle encoding is proposed for protecting an arbitrary unknown quantum state from dissipation, such as phase damping and amplitude damping. The schemes, which exhibits manifestation of the quantum Zeno effect, is effective whether quantum bits are decohered independently or cooperatively. We derive the working condition of the scheme and argue that this procedure has feasible practical implementation.
It is shown that a simplified version of the error correction code recently suggested by Shor exhibits manifestation of the quantum Zeno effect. Thus, under certain conditions, protection of an unknown quantum state is achieved. Error prevention procedures based on four-particle and two-particle encoding are proposed and it is argued that they have feasible practical implementations.
A general formalism for obtaining the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian for a one dimensional dissipative system is developed. The formalism is illustrated by applying it to the case of a relativistic particle with linear dissipation. The relativistic wave equation is solved for a free particle with linear dissipation.
For a free falling particle moving in a media which has quadratic velocity force effect on the particle, two equivalent constants of motion, with units of energy, two Lagrangians, and two Hamiltonians are deduced. These quantities describe the dynamics of the same classical system. However, their quantization and the associated statistical mechanics (for an ensemble of particles) describe two completely different quantum and statistical systems. This is shown at first order in the dissipative parameter.
The motion of single quantum particle through Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is considered within perturbation theory with respect to the particle-BEC interaction. The Hamiltonian of BEC is diagonalized by means of Bogoliubov's method. The process of dissipation due to the creation of excitation in BEC is analyzed and the dissipation rate is calculated in the lowest order of perturbation theory. The Landau's criterion for energy dissipation in BEC is then recovered. The energy spectrum of the impurity particle due to the interaction with BEC and its effective mass are evaluated.
On this work, we consider a particle moving in front of a dielectric plate, and study two of the most relevant effects of the vacuum field fluctuations: the dissipation, and the decoherence of the particle's internal degrees of freedom. We consider the particle to follow a classical, macroscopically-fixed trajectory. To study the dissipative effects, we calculate the in-out effective action by functionally integrating over the vacuum field and the microscopic degrees of freedom of both the plate and the particle. This in-out effective action develops an imaginary part, hence a non-vanishing pr…
The dissipation effect in a hybrid system is studied in this Letter. The hybrid system is a compound of a classical magnetic particle and a quantum single spin. Two cases are considered. In the first case, we investigate the effect of the dissipative quantum subsystem on the motion of its classical partner. Whereas in the second case we show how the dynamics of the quantum single spin are affected by the dissipation of the classical particle. Extension to general dissipative hybrid systems is discussed.
We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap subject to phase noise and particle loss. The phase coherence of a weakly-interacting condensate, experimentally measured via the contrast in an interference experiment, as well as the response to an external driving become maximal for a finite value of the dissipation rate matching the intrinsic time scales of the system. This can be understood as a stochastic resonance of the many-particle system. Even stronger effects are observed when dissipation acts in concurrence with strong inter-particle interactions, restorin…
We explore the environment-induced synchronization phenomenon in two-level systems in contact with a thermal dissipative environment. We first discuss the conditions under which synchronization emerges between a pair of two-level particles. That is, we analyze the impact of various model parameters on the emergence of (anti-)synchronization such as the environment temperature, the direct interaction between the particles, and the distance between them controlling the collectivity of the dissipation. We then enlarge the system to be composed of three two-level atoms to study the mutual synchron…
Quantum transmissions of a free particle passing through a rectangular potential barrier with dissipation are studied using a path decomposition technique. Dissipative processes strongly suppress the transmission probability at resonance just above the barrier resulting in an unexpected reduction of the mean traversal time through the potential barrier.
The energy loss due to a quadratic velocity dependent force on a quantum particle bouncing on a perfectly reflecting surface is obtained for a full cycle of motion. We approach this problem by means of a new effective phenomenological Hamiltonian which corresponds to the actual energy of the system and obtained the correction to the eigenvalues of the energy in first order quantum perturbation theory for the case of weak dissipation.
The time development of the reduced density matrix for a quantum oscillator damped by coupling it to an ohmic environment is calculated via an identity of the Debye-Waller form. Results obtained some years ago by Hakim and the author in the free particle limit [1] are thus recovered. The evolution of a free particle in a prepared initial state is examined, and a previously published exchange [2,3] is illuminated with figures showing no decoherence without dissipation. [1] V. Hakim and V. Ambegaokar, Phys. Rev. A 32, 423 (1985). [2] G.W. Ford and R.F. O'Connell, Phys. Rev. A 70, 026102 (2004). …
A Hamiltonian approach is presented to study the two dimensional motion of damped electric charges in time dependent electromagnetic fields. The classical and the corresponding quantum mechanical problems are solved for particular cases using canonical transformations applied to Hamiltonians for a particle with variable mass. The Green's function is constructed and, from it, the motion of a Gaussian wave packet is studied in detail.
In quantum lattice systems with geometric frustration, particles cannot move coherently due to destructive interference between tunnelling processes. Here we show that purely local, Markovian dissipation can induce mobility and long-range first-order coherence in frustrated lattice systems that is entirely generated by incoherent processes. Interactions reduce the coherences and mobility but do not destroy them. These effects are observable in experimental implementations of driven-dissipative lattices with a flat band and non-uniform dissipation.
The Brownian motion of a single particle is a paradigmatic model of the nonequilibrium dynamics of dissipative systems. In the system-plus-reservoir approach, one can derive the particle's equations of motion from the reversible dynamics of the system coupled to a bath of oscillators representing its thermal environment. However, extending the system-plus-reservoir approach to multiple particles in a collective environment is not straightforward, and conflicting models have been proposed to that end. Here, we set out to reconcile some aspects of the nonlinear and the bilinear models of two Bro…
The quantum dynamics of interacting bosons in a one-dimensional system is investigated numerically. We consider dissipative and conservative two-particle interactions, and integrate the master equation describing the system dynamics via a time-evolving block-decimation (TEBD) algorithm. Our numerical simulations directly apply to stationary-light polaritons in systems where atoms and photons are confined to the hollow core of a photonic crystal fibre. We show that a two-particle loss term can drive an initially uncorrelated state into a regime where correlations effectively inhibit the dissipa…

We study the escape rate of a particle in a metastable potential in presence of a dissipative bath coupled to the momentum of the particle. Using the semiclassical bounce technique, we find that this rate is exponentially enhanced. In particular, the influence of momentum dissipation depends on the slope of the barrier that the particle is tunneling through. We investigate also the influence of dissipative baths coupled to the position, and to the momentum of the particle, respectively. In this case the rate exhibits a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the dissipative coupling strengths.…
We consider a quantum Brownian particle interacting with two harmonic baths, which is then perturbed by a cubic coupling linking the particle and the baths. This cubic coupling induces non-linear dissipation and noise terms in the influence functional/master equation of the particle. Its effect on the Out-of-Time-Ordered Correlators (OTOCs) of the particle cannot be captured by the conventional Feynman-Vernon formalism. We derive the generalised influence functional which correctly encodes the physics of OTO fluctuations, response, dissipation and decoherence. We examine an example where Markov…
A free particle coupled to a heat bath can exhibit a number of thermodynamic anomalies like a negative specific heat or reentrant classicality. These low-temperature phenomena are expected to be modified at very low temperatures where finite-size effects associated with the discreteness of the energy spectrum become relevant. In this paper, we explore in which form the thermodynamic anomalies of the free damped particle appear for a damped harmonic oscillator. Since the discreteness of the oscillator's energy spectrum is fully accounted for, the results are valid for arbitrary temperatures. As…
We discuss the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well trap subject to phase noise and particle loss. The phase coherence of a weakly-interacting condensate as well as the response to an external driving show a pronounced stochastic resonance effect: Both quantities become maximal for a finite value of the dissipation rate matching the intrinsic time scales of the system. Even stronger effects are observed when dissipation acts in concurrence with strong inter-particle interactions, restoring the purity of the condensate almost completely and increasing the phase coherence sign…
We found that the Wigner rotation of a particle with spin 1/2, which is unitary in Minkowski spacetime, becomes non-unitary as the particle is falling onto the black hole. This implies that, from the quantum information processing point of view, any quantum information encoded in spins will be dissipated near the black hole. The gravitational field around the black hole thus acts like a dissipative quantum channel, especially the bit flip channel.
A system of $N$ spin-1/2 particles interacting with a thermal reservoir is used as a pedagogical example for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. We introduce and illustrate some methods, approximations, and phenomena related to dissipation and nonlinearity in many-particle physics. We start our analysis from the dynamical Sudarshan-Lindblad quantum master equation for the density operator of a system $\mathcal{S}$ interacting with a thermal reservoir $\mathcal{R}$. We derive the quantum version of the so-called Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon (BBGKY) equations such that the maste…
We study topological transport in the steady state of a quantum particle hopping on a one-dimensional lattice in the presence of dissipation. The model exhibits a rich phase structure, with the average particle velocity in the steady state playing the role of a non-equilibrium order parameter. Within each phase the average velocity is proportional to a topological winding number and to the inverse of the average time between quantum jumps. While the average velocity depends smoothly on system parameters within each phase, nonanalytic behavior arises at phase transition points. We show that cer…
We analytically study quantum dissipative dynamics described by the Caldirola-Kanai model with inter-particle interactions. We have found that the dissipative quantum dynamics of the Caldirola-Kanai model can be exactly mapped to a dissipationless quantum dynamics under a negative external harmonic potential, even when the particles are strongly interacting. In particular, we show that the mapping is valid for the unitary Fermi gas, which is relevant for cold atoms and nuclear matters.
We study the quantum counterpart of the theorem on energy equipartition for classical systems. We consider a free quantum Brownian particle modelled in terms of the Caldeira-Leggett framework: a system plus thermostat consisting of an infinite number of harmonic oscillators. By virtue of the theorem on the averaged kinetic energy $E_k$ of the quantum particle, it is expressed as $E_k = \langle \mathcal E_k \rangle$, where $\mathcal E_k$ is thermal kinetic energy of the thermostat per one degree of freedom and $\langle ...\rangle$ denotes averaging over frequencies $ω$ of thermostat oscillators…
We introduce a method for the dissipative preparation of strongly correlated quantum states of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice via localized particle loss. The interplay of dissipation and interactions enables different types of dynamics. This ushers a new line of experimental methods to maintain the coherence of a Bose-Einstein condensate or to deterministically generate macroscopically entangled quantum states.
We study the non-equilibrium (NE) fluctuation-dissipation (FD) relations in the context of quantum thermoelectric transport through a two-terminal nanodevice in the steady-state. The FD relations for the one- and two-particle correlation functions are derived for a model of the central region consisting of a single electron level. Explicit expressions for the FD relations of the Green's functions (one-particle correlations) are provided. The FD relations for the current-current and charge-charge (two-particle) correlations are calculated numerically. We use self-consistent NE Green's functions…
A completely positive master equation describing quantum dissipation for a Brownian particle is derived starting from microphysical collisions, exploiting a recently introduced approach to subdynamics of a macrosystem. The obtained equation can be cast into Lindblad form with a single generator for each Cartesian direction. Temperature dependent friction and diffusion coefficients for both position and momentum are expressed in terms of the collision cross-section.
We consider a free particle coupled with finite strength to a bath and investigate the evaluation of its specific heat. A harmonic oscillator bath of Drude type with cutoff frequency omega_D is employed to model an ohmic friction force with dissipation strength gamma. Two scenarios for obtaining specific heat are presented. The first one uses the measurement of the kinetic energy of the free particle while the second one is based on the reduced partition function. Both descriptions yield results which are consistent with the Third Law of thermodynamics. Nevertheless, the two methods produce di…
Normally, quantum fluctuations enhance the escape from metastable states in the presence of dissipation. Here we show that dissipation can enhance the stability of a quantum metastable system, consisting of a particle moving in a strongly asymmetric double well potential, interacting with a thermal bath. We find that the escape time from the metastable state has a nonmonotonic behavior versus the system-bath coupling and the temperature, producing a stabilizing effect.
We treat a relativistically moving particle interacting with a quantum field from an open system viewpoint of quantum field theory by the method of influence functionals or closed-time-path coarse-grained effective actions. The particle trajectory is not prescribed but is determined by the backreaction of the quantum field in a self-consistent way. Coarse-graining the quantum field imparts stochastic behavior in the particle trajectory. The formalism is set up here as a precursor to a first principles derivation of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac (ALD) equation from quantum field theory as the corre…
Quantum dissipation in thermal environment is investigated, using the path integral approach. The reduced density matrix of the harmonic oscillator system coupled to thermal bath of oscillators is derived for arbitrary spectrum of bath oscillators. Time evolution and the end point of two-body decay of unstable particles is then elucidated: After early transient times unstable particles undergo the exponential decay, followed by the power law decay and finally ending in a mixed state of residual particles containing contributions from both on and off the mass shell, whose abundance does not suf…
Experimentalists have come to temperatures very close to absolute zero at which physics that was once ordinary becomes extraordinary. In such a regime quantum effects and fluctuations start to play a dominant role. In this context we study the simplest open quantum system, namely, a free quantum Brownian particle coupled to thermal vacuum, i.e. thermostat in the limiting case of absolute zero temperature. We analyze the average energy $E=E(c)$ of the particle from a weak to strong interaction strength $c$ between the particle and thermal vacuum. The impact of various dissipation mechanisms is …
Driven chaotic systems are of interest in mesoscopic physics, as well as in nuclear, atomic and molecular physics. Such systems [coordinates $(Q,P)$]$ tend to absorb energy. This irreversible effect is known as dissipation. "Driving" means that a parameter $x$ is changed in time. More generally, $x$ may be a dynamical variable. In such case the interaction of $(x,p)$ with the environmental degrees of freedom $(Q,P)$ leads to dephasing as well as to dissipation. We introduce a general framework for the analysis of dissipation and dephasing, and we clarify the tight connection to recent studies …
We consider energetics of a free quantum Brownian particle coupled to thermostat of temperature $T$ and study this problem in terms of the lately formulated quantum analogue of the energy equipartition theorem. We show how this quantum counterpart can be derived from the Callen-Welton fluctuation-dissipation relation and rephrased in terms of superstatistics. We analyse the influence of the system-thermostat coupling strength and the memory time of the dissipation kernel on statistical characteristics of the particle energy and its specific heat.
