We derive entropic Bell inequalities from considering entropy Venn diagrams. These entropic inequalities, akin to the Braunstein-Caves inequalities, are violated for a quantum mechanical Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pair, which implies that the conditional entropies of Bell variables must be negative in this case. This suggests that the satisfaction of entropic Bell inequalities is equivalent to the non-negativity of conditional entropies as a necessary condition for separability.
The derivation of Bell inequalities in terms of quantum statistical (thermodynamic) entropies is considered. Inequalities of the Wigner form are derived but shown to be extremely limiting in their applicability due to the nature of the density matrices involved. This also helps to identify a limitation in the Cerf-Adami inequalities.
Entropic Bell inequalities witness contextual probability distributions on sets of jointly measurable observables. We find that their violation does not entail a violation of the correlative Bell inequality for certain parameter values. This anomaly between the entropic and correlative measures of contextuality helps to precisely qualify the type of non-classical resource. We determine its numerical bounds inviting their experimental verification. Among the permutations of observables that keep this anomaly in place, we identify the 'exotic' type that gives rise to non-classical resources unde…
We investigate quantum steering for multipartite systems by using entropic uncertainty relations. We introduce entropic steering inequalities whose violation certifies the presence of different classes of multipartite steering. These inequalities witness both steerable states and genuine multipartite steerable states. Furthermore, we study their detection power for several classes of states of a three-qubit system.
Using the entropic inequalities for Shannon and Tsallis entropies new inequalities for some classical polynomials are obtained. To this end, an invertible mapping for the irreducible unitary representation of groups $SU(2)$ and $SU(1,1)$ like Jacoby polynomials and Gauss' hypergeometric functions, respectively, are used.
The q-deformed entropies of quantum and classical systems are discussed. Standard and q-deformed entropic inequalities for X - states of the two-qubit and a state of single qudit with $j=3/2$ are presented.
New entropic inequalities are obtained for Franck-Condon factors (FCF-s) of diatomic molecules in adiabatic harmonic oscillator approximation. The probability distributions associated with FCF-s of diatomic molecules are presented in the form of joint-probability distributions of either two or three random variables. In view of this representation information inequalities corresponding to subadditivity condition is found and in case of harmonic oscillator approximation is obtained in explicit form of new inequalities for Hermite polynomials. Physical meaning of obtained entropic-information in…
The aim of this work is to verify the new entropic and information inequalities for non-composite systems using experimental $5 \times 5$ density matrix of the qudit state, measured by the tomographic method in a multi-level superconducting circuit. These inequalities are well-known for bipartite and tripartite systems, but have never been tested for superconducting qudits. Entropic inequalities can also be used to evaluate the accuracy of experimental data and the value of mutual information, deduced from them, may charachterize correlations between different degrees of freedom in a noncompos…
The Leggett-Garg inequalities probe the classical-quantum boundary by putting limits on the sum of pairwise correlation functions between classical measurement devices that consecutively measured the same quantum system. The apparent violation of these inequalities by standard quantum measurements has cast doubt on quantum mechanics' ability to consistently describe classical objects. Recent work has concluded that these inequalities cannot be violated by either strong or weak projective measurements [1]. Here I consider an entropic version of the Leggett-Garg inequalities that are different f…
We consider information characteristics of single qudit state (spin j=9/2), such as von Neumann entropy, von Neumann mutual information. We review different mathematical properties of these information characteristics: subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions, Araki-Lieb inequality. The inequalities are entropic inequalities for composite systems (bipartite, tripartite), but they can be written for noncomposite systems. Using the density matrix, describing the noncomposite qudit system state in explicit matrix form we proved new entropic inequalities for single qudit state (spin j=9/2…
We use entropic uncertainty relations to formulate inequalities that witness Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering correlations in diverse quantum systems. We then use these inequalities to formulate symmetric EPR-steering inequalities using the mutual information. We explore the differing natures of the correlations captured by one-way and symmetric steering inequalities, and examine the possibility of exclusive one-way steerability in two-qubit states. Furthermore, we show that steering inequalities can be extended to generalized positive operator valued measures (POVMs), and we also derive…
The two-parameter Minkowski like inequality written for composite quantum system state is obtained for arbitrary Hermitian nonnegative matrix with trace equal to unity. The inequality can be used as entropic and information inequality for density matrix of noncomposite finite quantum system, e.g., for a single qudit state. The analogs of strong subadditivity condition for the single qudit is discussed in context of obtained Minkowski like inequality.
The assumption of local realism in a Bell locality scenario imposes non-trivial conditions on the Shannon entropies of the associated probability distributions, expressed by linear entropic Bell inequalities. In principle, these entropic inequalities provide necessary but not sufficient criteria for the existence of a local hidden variable model reproducing the correlations, as, for example, the paradigmatic nonlocal PR-box is entropically not different from a classically correlated box. In this paper we show that for the n-cycle scenario, entropic inequalities completely characterize the set …
We formulate entropic Leggett-Garg inequalities, which place constraints on the statistical outcomes of temporal correlations of observables. The information theoretic inequalities are satisfied if macrorealism holds. We show that the quantum statistics underlying correlations between time-separated spin component of a quantum rotor mimics that of spin correlations in two spatially separated spin-$s$ particles sharing a state of zero total spin. This brings forth the violation of the entropic Leggett-Garg inequality by a rotating quantum spin-$s$ system in similar manner as does the entropic B…
We establish a general connection between entropic uncertainty relations, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering, and joint measurability. Specifically, we construct steering inequalities from any entropic uncertainty relation, given that the latter satisfies two natural properties. We obtain steering inequalities based on Rényi entropies. These turn out to be tight in many scenarios, using max- and min-entropy. Considering steering tests with two noisy measurements, our inequalities exactly recover the noise threshold for steerability. This is the case for any pair of qubit 2-outcome measurements, …
We derive new inequalities for the probabilities of projective measurements in mutually unbiased bases of a qudit system. These inequalities lead to wider ranges of validity and tighter bounds on entropic uncertainty inequalities previously derived in the literature.
We introduce the concept of entropic nonsignaling correlations, i.e., entropies arising from probabilistic theories that are compatible with the fact that we cannot transmit information instantaneously. We characterize and show the relevance of these entropic correlations in a variety of different scenarios, ranging from typical Bell experiments to more refined descriptions such as bilocality and information causality. In particular, we apply the framework to derive the first entropic inequality testing genuine tripartite nonlocality in quantum systems of arbitrary dimension and also prove the…
The probability representation of quantum and classical statistical mechanics is discussed. Symplectic tomography, center-of-mass tomography, and spin tomography are studied. The connection of tomographic probabilities with dynamic symmetries like symplectic group is considered. Entropic uncertainty relations and inequalities for spin tomograms are reviewed.
The Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of the group SU(2) are shown to satisfy new inequalities. They are obtained using the properties of Shannon and Tsallis entropies. The inequalities associated with the Wigner 3-j symbols are obtained using the relation of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients with probability distributions interpreted either as distributions for composite systems or distributions for noncomposite systems. The new inequalities were found for Hahn polynomials and hypergeometric functions
It is a long-standing belief, as pointed out by Bell in 1986, that it is impossible to use a two-mode Gaussian state possessing a positive-definite Wigner function to demonstrate nonlocality as the Wigner function itself provides a local hidden-variable model. In particular, when one performs continuous-variable (CV) quadrature measurements upon a routinely generated CV entanglement, namely, the two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state, the resulting Wigner function is positive-definite and as such, the TMSV state cannot violate any Bell inequality using CV quadrature measurements. We show here, …
Recently it was shown that if a given state fulfils the reduction criterion it must also satisfy the known entropic inequalities. Now the questions arises whether on the assumption that stronger criteria based on positive but not completely positive maps are satisfied, it is possible to derive some scalar inequalities stronger than the entropic ones. In this paper we show that under some assumptions the extended reduction criterion [H.-P. Breuer, Phys. Rev. Lett 97, 080501 (2006); W. Hall, J. Phys. A 40, 6183 (2007)] leads to some entropic--like inequalities which are much stronger than their …
The use of the so-called entropic inequalities is revisited in the light of new quantum correlation measures, specially nonlocality. We introduce the concept of {\it classicality} as the non-violation of these classical inequalities by quantum states of several multiqubit systems and compare it with the non-violation of Bell inequalities, that is, {\it locality}. We explore --numerically and analytically-- the relationship between several other quantum measures and discover the deep connection existing between them. The results are surprising due to the fact that these measures are very differ…
It is shown that even if the linear entropy of mixed two-qubit state is not smaller then 0.457, Bell - CHSH inequalities can be violated. This contradicts the result obtained in the paper of E. Santos [1].
Renyi entropy associated with spin tomograms of quantum states is shown to obey to new inequalities containing the dependence on quantum Fourier transform. The limiting inequality for the von Neumann entropy of spin quantum states and a new kind of entropy associated with quantum Fourier transform are obtained. Possible connections with subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for tomographic entropies and von Neumann entropies are discussed.
The existence of a global causal order between events places constraints on the correlations that parties may share. Such "causal correlations" have been the focus of recent attention, driven by the realization that some extensions of quantum mechanics may violate so-called causal inequalities. In this paper we study causal correlations from an entropic perspective, and we show how to use this framework to derive entropic causal inequalities. We consider two different ways to derive such inequalities. Firstly, we consider a method based on the causal Bayesian networks describing the causal rel…
In this paper, we discuss some general connections between the notions of positive map, weak majorization and entropic inequalities in the context of detection of entanglement among bipartite quantum systems. First, basing on the fact that any positive map $Λ:M_{d}(\mathbb{C})\to M_{d}(\mathbb{C})$ can be written as the difference between two completely positive maps $Λ=Λ_{1}-Λ_{2}$, we propose a possible way to generalize the Nielsen--Kempe majorization criterion. Then we present two methods of derivation of some general classes of entropic inequalities useful for the detection of entanglemen…
A conjecture -- \emph{the modified super-additivity inequality} of relative entropy -- was proposed in \cite{Zhang2012}: There exist three unitary operators $U_A\in \unitary{\cH_A},U_B\in \unitary{\cH_B}$, and $U_{AB}\in \unitary{\cH_A\ot \cH_B}$ such that $$ \rS(U_{AB}ρ_{AB}U^\dagger_{AB}||σ_{AB}) \geqslant \rS(U_Aρ_AU^\dagger_A||σ_A) + \rS(U_Bρ_BU^\dagger_B||σ_B), $$ where the reference state $σ$ is required to be full-ranked. A numerical study on the conjectured inequality is conducted in this note. The results obtained indicate that the modified super-additivity inequality of relative entr…
For noncomposite systems in classical and quantum domains, we obtain new inequalities such as the subadditivity and strong subadditivity conditions for Shannon entropies and information determined by the probability distributions and for von Neumann entropies of quantum states determined by the density operators. We extend the relations of Shannon and Tsallis entropies to the entropies of conditional probability distributions known for composite systems to the case of noncomposite systems. We give a review of the approach to construct the tomographic-probability distributions for qudit systems…
The notion of weighted quantum entropy is reviewed and considered for bipartite and noncomposite quantum systems. The known for the weighted entropy information inequality (subadditivity condition) is extended to the case of indivisible qudit system on example of qutrit. This new inequality for qutrit density matrix is discussed for different cases of weights and states. The role of weighted entropy is discussed in connection with studies of nonlinear quantum channels.
As is well known, the macroscopic realism and the noninvasive measurability together lead to Leggett-Garg inequalities violated by quantum mechanics. We consider tests of the Leggett-Garg type with use of the $q$-entropies. For all $q\geq1$, quantum mechanics predicts violations of an entire family of $q$-entropic inequalities of the Leggett-Garg type. Violations are exemplified with a quantum spin-$s$ system. In general, entropic Leggett-Garg inequalities give only necessary conditions that some probabilistic model is compatible with the macrorealism in the broader sense. The presented $q$-en…
It is well-known that von Neumann entropy is nonmonotonic unlike Shannon entropy (which is monotonically nondecreasing). Consequently, it is difficult to relate the entropies of the subsystems of a given quantum state. In this paper, we show that if we consider quantum secret sharing states arising from a class of monotone span programs, then we can partially recover the monotonicity of entropy for the so-called unauthorized sets. Furthermore, we can show for these quantum states the entropy of the authorized sets is monotonically nonincreasing.
The Bell-KS theorem and the more recent $ψ$-epistemic \emph{no-go} theorems of QM are discussed in the context of Entropic Dynamics. In doing so we find that the Bell-KS theorem allows for, a perhaps overlooked, hybrid-contextual model of QM in which one set of commuting observables (position in this case) is non-contextual and all other observables are contextual. Entropic Dynamics is in a unique position as compared to other foundational theories of QM because it derives QM using standard techniques in Bayesian probability theory. In this formalism, position is the preferred basis from which…
Bell's inequalities, in the form given by Cerf and Adami, are derived from the combination of the second law of thermodynamics and the Markov postulate. Violations of these inequalities are discussed in terms of the mixing characteristics of the density operators. A quantum mechanical bound for a system of three qubits, two of which are entangled, is found and is shown to lead to strong subadditivity in one case. Finally, in interpreting the results, the role the uncertainty relations play in the definition of entropy and the second law is discussed, demonstrating a link to Bell's inequalities…
A review of the tomographic-probability representation of classical and quantum states is presented. The tomographic entropies and entropic uncertainty relations are discussed in connection with ambiguities in the interpretation of the state tomograms which are considered either as a set of the probability distributions of random variables depending on extra parameters or as a single joint probability distribution of these random variables and random parameters with specific properties of the marginals. Examples of optical tomograms of photon states, symplectic tomograms, and unitary spin tomo…
We present a set of Bell inequalities for multiqubit quantum systems. These Bell inequalities are shown to be able to detect multiqubit entanglement better than previous Bell inequalities such as Werner-Wolf-Zukowski- Brukner ones. Computable formulas are presented for calculating the maximal violations of these Bell inequalities for any multiqubit states.
A technique, which we call homogenization, is applied to transform CH-type Bell inequalities, which contain lower order correlations, into CHSH-type Bell inequalities, which are defined for highest order correlation functions. A homogenization leads to inequalities involving more settings, that is a choice of one more observable is possible for each party. We show that this technique preserves the tightness of Bell inequalities: a homogenization of a tight CH-type Bell inequality is still a tight CHSH-type Bell inequality. As an example we obtain $3\times3\times3$ CHSH-type Bell inequalities b…
For any Bell locality scenario (or Kochen-Specker noncontextuality scenario), the joint Shannon entropies of local (or noncontextual) models define a convex cone for which the non-trivial facets are tight entropic Bell (or contextuality) inequalities. In this paper we explore this entropic approach and derive tight entropic inequalities for various scenarios. One advantage of entropic inequalities is that they easily adapt to situations like bilocality scenarios, which have additional independence requirements that are non-linear on the level of probabilities, but linear on the level of entrop…
We discuss general Bell inequalities for bipartite and multipartite systems, emphasizing the connection with convex geometry on the mathematical side, and the communication aspects on the physical side. Known results on families of generalized Bell inequalities are summarized. We investigate maximal violations of Bell inequalities as well as states not violating (certain) Bell inequalities. Finally, we discuss the relation between Bell inequality violations and entanglement properties currently discussed in quantum information theory.
We numerically investigate entropic Bell inequalities for a pair of entangled qutrits using information-theoretic distances. We show that for this class of inequalities Tsallis entropy is more suitable than Shannon as it reveals non-classicality for a larger set of quantum states. Finally, we find that like probability based inequalities, entropic ones are maximally violated by the non-maximally entangled qutrit state.
Classical and quantum physics impose different constraints on the joint probability distributions of observed variables in a causal structure. These differences mean that certain correlations can be certified as non-classical, which has both foundational and practical importance. Rather than working with the probability distribution itself, it can instead be convenient to work with the entropies of the observed variables. In the Bell causal structure with two inputs and outputs per party, a technique that uses entropic inequalities is known that can always identify non-classical correlations. …
As shown by Pitowsky, the Bell inequalities are related to certain classes of probabilistic inequalities dealt with by George Boole, back in the 1850s. Here a short presentation of this relationship is given. Consequently, the Bell inequalities can be obtained without any assumptions of physical nature, and merely through mathematical argument.
We derive Bell inequalities for graph states by generalizing the approach proposed by Ardehali [Phys. Rev. A 46, 5375 (1992)] for Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states. Using this method, we demonstrate that Bell inequalities with nonstabilizer observables are often superior to the optimal GHZ-Mermin-type (or stabilizer-type) Bell inequalities.
Using known entropic and information inequalities new inequalities for some classical polynomials are obtained. Examples of Jacobi and Legendre polynomials are considered.
We present a prescription for obtaining Bell's inequalities for N>2 observers involving more than two alternative measurement settings. We give examples of some families of such inequalities. The inequalities are violated by certain classes of states for which all standard Bell's inequalities with two measurement settings per observer are satisfied.
We present tight Bell inequalities expressed by probabilities for three four- and five-dimensional systems. The tight structure of Bell inequalities for three $d$-dimensional systems (qudits) is proposed. Some interesting Bell inequalities of three qubits reduced from those of three qudits are also studied.
We present generic Bell inequalities for multipartite multi-dimensional systems. The inequalities that any local realistic theories must obey are violated by quantum mechanics for even-dimensional multipartite systems. A large set of variants are shown to naturally emerge from the generic Bell inequalities. We discuss particular variants of Bell inequalities, that are violated for all the systems including odd-dimensional systems.
We discuss the procedure of different partitions in the finite set of $N$ integer numbers and construct generic formulas for a bijective map of real numbers $s_y$, where $y=1,2,\ldots,N$, $N=\prod \limits_{k=1}^{n} X_k$, and $X_k$ are positive integers, onto the set of numbers $s(y(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n))$. We give the functions used to present the bijective map, namely, $y(x_1,x_2,...,x_n)$ and $x_k(y)$ in an explicit form and call them the functions detecting the hidden correlations in the system. The idea to introduce and employ the notion of "hidden gates" for a single qudit is proposed. We o…
Multipartite Bell-type inequalities are derived for general systems. They involve up to eight observables with arbitrary spectra on each site. These inequalities are closely related to the algebras of quaternions and octonions.
We overview series of multiqubit Bell's inequalities which apply to correlation functions. We present conditions that quantum states must satisfy to violate such inequalities.
The fields of quantum non-locality in physics, and causal discovery in machine learning, both face the problem of deciding whether observed data is compatible with a presumed causal relationship between the variables (for example a local hidden variable model). Traditionally, Bell inequalities have been used to describe the restrictions imposed by causal structures on marginal distributions. However, some structures give rise to non-convex constraints on the accessible data, and it has recently been noted that linear inequalities on the observable entropies capture these situations more natura…
We discuss the known construction of two interacting superconducting circuits, based on Josephson junctions, that can be precisely engineered and easily controlled. In particular, we use the parametric excitation of two circuits, realized by an instant change of the qubit coupling, to study entropic and information properties of the density matrix of the composite system. The density matrix is obtained from the initial thermal state and is then analyzed in the approximation of small perturbation parameter and sufficiently low temperature. We also check the subadditivity condition for this syst…
Some temporal Bell inequalities are deduced under the assumption of realism and perfect correlation. No locality condition is needed. When the system is macroscopic, the perfect correlation assumption substitutes the noninvasive measurability hypothesis advanteousgely. The new inequalities are violated quantically. This violation is clearly more severe than the similar violation in the case of ordinary Bell inequalities. Some microscopic and macroscopic situations in which these inequalities could be tested are considered.
We theoretically study operations with a four-level superconducting circuit as a two-qubit system. Using a mapping on a two-qubit system, we show how to implement iSWAP gates and Hadamard gates through pulses on transitions between particular pairs of energy levels. Our approach allows one to prepare pure two-qubit entangled states with desired form of reduced density matrices of the same purity and, in particular, arbitrary identical reduced states of qubits. We propose using schemes for the Hadamard gate and two-qubit entangled states with identical reduced density matrices in order to verif…
Since John S. Bell demonstrated the interest of studying linear combinations of probabilities in relation with the EPR paradox in 1964, Bell inequalities have lead to numerous developments. Unfortunately, the description of Bell inequalities is subject to several degeneracies, which make any exchange of information about them unnecessarily hard. Here, we analyze these degeneracies and propose a decomposition for Bell-like inequalities based on a set of reference expressions which is not affected by them. These reference expressions set a common ground for comparing Bell inequalities. We provid…
We present an analysis of the structure of Bell inequalities, mainly for the case of N qubits with two observables each. We show that these inequalities are related to Hadamard matrices and define Bell polynomials (in one variable) as an additional tool. With these aids we raise several conditions the coefficients of Bell inequalities must satisfy, and recursively generate the whole set of inequalities starting from N=1. Moreover, we prove some characteristic features of this set, such as that most of the inequalities contain all expectation values under consideration. Finally, we show how the…
Finding all Bell inequalities for a given number of parties, measurement settings, and measurement outcomes is in general a computationally hard task. We show that all Bell inequalities which are symmetric under the exchange of parties can be found by examining a symmetrized polytope which is simpler than the full Bell polytope. As an illustration of our method, we generate 238885 new Bell inequalities and 1085 new Svetlichny inequalities. We find, in particular, facet inequalities for Bell experiments involving two parties and two measurement settings that are not of the Collins-Gisin-Linden-…
Bell inequalities for position measurements are derived using the bits of the binary expansion of position-measurement results. Violations of these inequalities are obtained from the output state of the Non-degenerate Optical Parametric Amplifier.
We propose a variation of Bell inequalities for continuous variables that employs the Wigner function and Weyl symbols of operators in phase space. We present examples of Bell inequality violation which beat Cirel'son's bound.
The connection between quantum optical nonclassicality and the violation of Bell's inequalities is explored. Bell type inequalities for the electromagnetic field are formulated for general states(arbitrary number or photons, pure or mixed) of quantised radiation and their violation is connected to other nonclassical properties of the field. Classical states are shown to obey these inequalities and for the family of centered Gaussian states the direct connection between violation of Bell-type inequalities and squeezing is established.
