The concept of a superposition is a revolutionary novelty introduced by Quantum Mechanics. If a system may be in any one of two pure states x and y, we must consider that it may also be in any one of many superpositions of x and y. An in-depth analysis of superpositions is proposed, in which states are represented by one-dimensional subspaces, not by unit vectors as in Dirac's notation. Superpositions must be considered when one cannot distinguish between possible paths, i.e., histories, leading to the current state of the system. In such a case the resulting state is some compound of the states that result from each of the possible paths. States can be compounded, i.e., superposed in such a way only if they are not orthogonal. Since different classical states are orthogonal, the claim implies no non-trivial superpositions can be observed in classical systems. The parameter that defines such compounds is a proportion defining the mix of the different states entering the compound. Two quantities, p and theta, both geometrical in nature, relate one-dimensional subspaces in complex Hilbert spaces: the first one is a measure of proximity relating two rays, the second one is an angle relating three rays. The properties of the operation of superposition are very different from those that govern linear combination of vectors.
We analyze quantum states formed as superpositions of an initial pure product state and its image under local unitary evolution, using two measurement-based measures of superposition size: one based on the optimal quantum binary distinguishability of the branches of the superposition and another based on the ratio of the maximal quantum Fisher information of the superposition to that of its branches, i.e., the relative metrological usefulness of the superposition. A general formula for the effective sizes of these states according to the branch distinguishability measure is obtained and applie…
Spontaneous collapse models of state vector reduction represent a possible solution to the quantum measurement problem. In the present paper we focus our attention on the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) theory and the corresponding continuous localisation models in the form of a Brownian-driven motion in Hilbert space. We consider experimental setups in which a single photon hits a beam splitter and is subsequently detected by photon detector(s), generating a superposition of photon-detector quantum states. Through a numerical approach we study the dependence of collapse times on the physical feat…
Spatial modes of light directly give the most easily accessible degree of freedom that span an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. The higher dimensional spatial mode entanglement realized using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process is generally restricted to the subspace defined by a single spatial mode in pump. Access to other modal subspaces can be realized by pumping beams carrying several easily tunable transverse modes. As a proof-to-principle experiment, we generate twin-photon states in a nonlinear SPDC process with pump as a superposition of first order Laguerre-Gaussi…
A new approach to wavefunction collapse is prepared by an analysis of semiclassical gravity. The fact that, in semiclassical gravity, superposed states must share a common classical spacetime geometry, even if they prefer (according to general relativity) differently curved spacetimes, leads to energy increases of the states, when their mass distributions are different. If one interprets these energy increases divided by Planck's constant as decay rates of the states, one obtains the lifetimes of superpositions according to the Diosi-Penrose criterion and reduction probabilities according to B…
Phase-space interference of states optically truncated by quantum scissors: Generation of distinct superpositions of qudit coherent states by displacement of vacuum
In this paper we analyze the definition of quantum superpositions within orthodox Quantum Mechanics (QM) and their relation to physical reality. We will begin by discussing how the metaphysical presuppositions imposed by Bohr on the interpretation of QM have become not only interpretational dogmas which constrain the limits of the present Orthodox Line of Research (OLR), but also how these desiderata implicitly preclude the possibility of developing a physical representation of quantum superpositions. We will then continue analyzing how most interpretations of QM argue against the existence of…
We propose an interferometric method for statistically discriminating between nonorthogonal states in high dimensional Hilbert spaces for use in quantum information processing. The method is illustrated for the case of photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) states. These states belong to pairs of bases that are mutually unbiased on a sequence of two-dimensional subspaces of the full Hilbert space, but the vectors within the same basis are not necessarily orthogonal to each other. Over multiple trials, this method allows distinguishing OAM eigenstates from superpositions of multiple such eigenst…
Superconducting circuits for quantum information processing are often described theoretically in terms of a discrete charge, or equivalently, a compact phase/flux, at each node in the circuit. Here we revisit the consequences of lifting this assumption for transmon and Cooper-pair-box circuits, which are constituted from a Josephson junction and a capacitor, treating both the superconducting phase and charge as noncompact variables. The periodic Josephson potential gives rise to a Bloch band structure, characterised by the Bloch quasicharge. We analyse the possibility of creating superposition…

The superposition principle is one of the landmarks of quantum mechanics. The importance of quantum superpositions provokes questions about the limitations that quantum mechanics itself imposes on the possibility of their generation. In this work we systematically study the problem of creation of superpositions of unknown quantum states. First, we prove a no-go theorem that forbids the existence of a universal probabilistic quantum protocol producing a superposition of two unknown quantum states. Secondly, we provide an explicit probabilistic protocol generating a superposition of two unknown …
In general relativity, the description of spacetime relies on idealised rods and clocks, which identify a reference frame. In any concrete scenario, reference frames are associated to physical systems, which are ultimately quantum in nature. A relativistic description of the laws of physics hence needs to take into account such quantum reference frames (QRFs), through which spacetime can be given an operational meaning. Here, we introduce the notion of a spacetime QRF, associated to a quantum particle in spacetime. Such formulation has the advantage of treating space and time on equal footing,…

We introduce an efficient iterative method to prepare a target state in Hilbert spaces with high dimensionality using a combination of unitary evolution, measurements, and quantum Zeno dynamics. The latter confines the evolution within Zeno subspaces of decreasing size. This gives an exponential speed up relative to the case of states evolving in the full Hilbert space between projective measurements. We demonstrate our approach on the control problem of rapidly transferring a superfluid into the Mott insulator in the Bose-Hubbard model. We discuss the general applicability of the method by pr…
Recent advances in laser interactions with coherent free electrons have enabled to shape the electron's quantum state. Each electron becomes a superposition of energy levels on an infinite quantized ladder, shown to contain up to thousands of energy levels. We propose to utilize the quantum nature of such laser-driven free electrons as a "synthetic Hilbert space" in which we construct and control qudits (quantum digits). The question that motivates our work is what qudit states can be accessed using electron-laser interactions, and whether it is possible to implement any arbitrary quantum gate…
Quantum gravity is expected to contain descriptions of semiclassical spacetime geometries in quantum superpositions. To date, no framework for modelling such superpositions has been devised. Here, we provide a new phenomenological description for the response of quantum probes (i.e. Unruh-deWitt detectors) on a spacetime manifold in quantum superposition. By introducing an additional control degree of freedom, one can assign a Hilbert space to the spacetime, allowing it to exist in a superposition of spatial or curvature states. Applying this approach to static de Sitter space, we discover sce…
We extend Pearl's definition of causal influence to the quantum domain, where two quantum systems $A$, $B$ with finite-dimensional Hilbert space are embedded in a common environment $C$ and propagated with a joint unitary $U$. For finite dimensional Hilbert space of $C$, we find the necessary and sufficient condition on $U$ for a causal influence of $A$ on $B$ and vice versa. We introduce an easily computable measure of the causal influence and use it to study the causal influence of different quantum gates, its mutuality, and quantum superpositions of different causal orders. For two two-leve…
We consider a macroscopic quantum system with unitarily evolving pure state $ψ_t\in \mathcal{H}$ and take it for granted that different macro states correspond to mutually orthogonal, high-dimensional subspaces $\mathcal{H}_ν$ (macro spaces) of $\mathcal{H}$. Let $P_ν$ denote the projection to $\mathcal{H}_ν$. We prove two facts about the evolution of the superposition weights $\|P_νψ_t\|^2$: First, given any $T>0$, for most initial states $ψ_0$ from any particular macro space $\mathcal{H}_μ$ (possibly far from thermal equilibrium), the curve $t\mapsto \|P_νψ_t\|^2$ is approximately the same (…
The ability of matter to be superposed at two different locations while being intrinsically connected by a quantum phase is among the most counterintuitive predictions of quantum physics. While such superpositions have been created for a variety of systems, the in-situ observation of the phase coherence has remained out of reach. Using a heralding measurement on a spin-oscillator entangled state, we project a mechanical trapped-ion oscillator into a superposition of two spatially separated states, a situation analogous to Schrödinger's cat. Quantum interference is clearly observed by extractin…
Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to ma…
A non-Hermitian $N-$level quantum model with two free real parameters is proposed in which the bound-state energies are given as roots of an elementary trigonometric expression and in which they are, in a physical domain of parameters, all real. The wave function components are expressed as closed-form superpositions of two Chebyshev polynomials. In any eligible physical Hilbert space of finite dimension $N < \infty$ our model is constructed as unitary with respect to an underlying Hilbert-space metric $Θ\neq I$. The simplest version of the latter metric is finally constructed, at any dimensio…
