We apply near-field matter-wave interferometry to determine the absolute scalar polarizability of the fullerenes C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$. A key feature of our experiment is the combination of good transmission and high spatial resolution, gained by wide molecular beams passing through sub-micron gratings. This allows to significantly facilitate the observation of field-dependent beam shifts. We thus measure the polarizability to be $α=88.9 \pm 0.9 \pm 5.1
\rm Å^{3}$ for C$_{60}$ and to $α= 108.5 \pm 2.0 \pm 6.2 \rm Å^{3}$ for C$_{70}$.
We report the measurement of the anisotropic AC polarizability of ultracold polar $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules in the ground and first rotationally excited states. Theoretical analysis of the polarizability agrees well with experimental findings. Although the polarizability can vary by more than 30%, a "magic" angle between the laser polarization and the quantization axis is found where the polarizability of the $|N=0,m_N=0>$ and the $|N=1,m_N=0>$ states match. At this angle, rotational decoherence due to the mismatch in trapping potentials is eliminated, and we observe a sharp increase in the …
Measurement of the electric polarizability of lithium by atom interferometry
We experimentally study the optical- and terahertz- induced rotational dynamics of asymmetric molecules in the gas phase. Terahertz and optical fields are identified as two distinct control handles over asymmetric molecules, as they couple to the rotational degrees of freedom via the molecular- dipole and polarizability selectively. The distinction between those two rotational handles is highlighted by different types of quantum revivals observed in long duration (>100ps) field-free rotational evolution. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with Random Phase Wave Function simula…
Selection of "magic" trapping conditions with ultracold atoms or molecules, where pairs of internal states experience identical trapping potentials, brings substantial benefits to precision measurements and quantum computing schemes. Working at such conditions could ensure that detrimental effects of inevitable inhomogeneities across an ultracold sample are significantly reduced. However, this aspect of confinement remains unexplored for ultracold polar molecules. Here, we present means to control the AC Stark shift of rotational states of ultracold polar molecules, when subjected to both trap…
Static electric response properties of atoms and molecules are reported within the real-space Cartesian grid implementation of pseudopotential Kohn-Sham (KS) density functional theory (DFT). A detailed systematic investigation is made for a representative set of atoms and molecules, through a number of properties like total ground-state electronic energies, permanent dipole moment ($\bmμ$), static average dipole polarizability ($\overlineα$). This is further extended to first-hyperpolarizability ($\bmβ$) in molecules. It employs a recently developed non-uniform grid-optimization technique, wit…
We report on the measurement of the contribution of the magnetic-dipole hyperfine interaction to the tensor polarizability of the electronic ground-state in $^{87}$Rb. This contribution was isolated by measuring the differential shift of the clock transition frequency in $^{87}$Rb atoms that were optically trapped in the focus of an intense CO$_2$ laser beam. By comparing to previous tensor polarizability measurements in $^{87}$Rb, the contribution of the interaction with the nuclear electric-quadrupole moment was isolated as well. Our measurement will enable better estimation of black-body sh…
In this work, we propose new field-free estimators for static field-gradient polarizabilities in finite temperature PIMC simulation. Namely, dipole--quadrupole polarizability $A$, dipole--dipole--quadrupole polarizability $B$ and quadrupole--quadrupole polarizability $C$ are computed for several up to two-electron systems: H, H$^-$, He, Li$^+$, Be$^{2+}$, Ps$_2$, PsH, H$_2^+$, H$_2$, H$_3^+$ and HeH$^+$. We provide complementary data for ground state electronic properties within the adiabatic approximation, and demonstrate good agreement with available values in the literature. More importantl…
We measure the absolute absorption cross section of molecules using a matter-wave interferometer. A nanostructured density distribution is imprinted onto a dilute molecular beam through quantum interference. As the beam crosses the light field of a probe laser some molecules will absorb a single photon. These absorption events impart a momentum recoil which shifts the position of the molecule relative to the unperturbed beam. Averaging over the shifted and unshifted components within the beam leads to a reduction of the fringe visibility, enabling the absolute absorption cross section to be ex…
We report an experimental measurement of a light wavelength at which the ac electric polarizability equals zero for 87Rb atoms in the F=2 ground hyperfine state. The experiment uses a condensate interferometer both to find this 'tune-out' wavelength and to accurately determine the light polarization for it. The wavelength lies between the D1 and D2 spectral lines at 790.03235(3) nm. The measurement is sensitive to the tensor contribution to the polarizability, which has been removed so that the reported value is the zero of the scalar polarizability. The precision is fifty times better than pr…
We demonstrate and analyze a strongly driven quantum pendulum in the angular motion of stateselected and laser aligned OCS molecules. Raman-couplings during the rising edge of a 50-picosecond laser pulse create a wave packet of pendular states, which propagates in the confining potential formed by the polarizability interaction between the molecule and the laser field. This wave-packet dynamics manifests itself as pronounced oscillations in the degree of alignment with a laser-intensity dependent period.
We present a scheme well-suited to investigate quantitatively the angular momentum coherence of molecular fragments. Assuming that the dissociated molecule has a null total angular momentum, we investigate the propagation of the corresponding atomic fragments in the apparatus. We show that the envisioned interferometer enables one to distinguish unambiguously a spin-coherent from a spin-incoherent dissociation, as well as to estimate the purity of the angular momentum density matrix associated with the fragments. This setup, which may be seen as an atomic analogue of a twin-photon interferomet…
Even 100 years after its introduction by Louis de Broglie, the wave-nature of matter is often regarded as a mind-boggling phenomenon. To give an intuitive introduction to this field, we here discuss the diffraction of massive molecules through a single, double, and triple slit, as well as a nanomechanical grating. While the experiments are in good agreement with undergraduate textbook predictions, we also observe pronounced differences resulting from the molecules' mass and internal complexity. The molecules' polarizability causes an attractive van der Waals interaction with the slit walls, wh…
We discuss the concept of an all-optical and ionizing matter-wave interferometer in the time domain. The proposed setup aims at testing the wave nature of highly massive clusters and molecules, and it will enable new precision experiments with a broad class of atoms, using the same laser system. The propagating particles are illuminated by three pulses of a standing ultraviolet laser beam, which detaches an electron via efficient single photon-absorption. Optical gratings may have periods as small as 80 nm, leading to wide diffraction angles for cold atoms and to compact setups even for very m…
Matter-wave interferometry with atoms and molecules has attracted a rapidly growing interest over the past two decades, both in demonstrations of fundamental quantum phenomena and in quantum-enhanced precision measurements. Such experiments exploit the non-classical superposition of two or more position and momentum states which are coherently split and rejoined to interfere. Here, we present the experimental realization of a universal near-field interferometer built from three short-pulse single-photon ionization gratings. We observe quantum interference of fast molecular clusters, with a com…
A theoretical study of the rotational dynamics of a linear polar molecule in a two-color non-resonant cw laser field is presented. By systematically considering the interactions of this field with the electric dipole moment, polarizability and hyperpolarizability of the molecule, the effect of the symmetries of the Hamiltonian on the orientation and alignment is explored in a regime where the time-average approximation does not hold. It is shown that the alignment and orientation satisfy certain symmetries as a function of the phases and field strengths. On average a one-color cw laser field d…
Impulsive orientation of symmetric-top molecules excited by two-color femtosecond pulses is considered. In addition to the well-known transient orientation appearing immediately after the pulse and then reemerging periodically due to quantum revivals, we report the phenomenon of field-free long-lasting orientation. Long-lasting means that the time averaged orientation remains non-zero until destroyed by other physical effects, e.g. intermolecular collisions. The effect is caused by the combined action of the field-polarizability and field-hyperpolarizability interactions. The dependence of deg…
Since their first experimental observation, ultralong-range Rydberg molecules consisting of a highly excited Rydberg atom and a ground state atom have attracted the interest in the field of ultracold chemistry. Especially the intriguing properties like size, polarizability and type of binding they inherit from the Rydberg atom are of interest. An open question in the field is the reduced lifetime of the molecules compared to the corresponding atomic Rydberg states. In this letter we present an experimental study on the lifetimes of the ^3Σ(5s-35s) molecule in its vibrational ground state and i…
