Quantum input-output relations for a generic $n$-port ring cavity are obtained by modeling the ring as a cascade of $n$ interlinked beam splitters. Cavity response to a beam impinging on one port is studied as a function of the beam-splitter reflectivities and the internal phase-shifts. Interferometric sensitivity and stability are analyzed as a function of the number of ports.
Multiport generalizations of beam splitters are the key component in multipath interferometers, which are important in a range of quantum state engineering and precision measurement schemes. Here we propose a straightforward method for implementing multiport devices for atoms trapped in optical ring lattices. These devices are interesting as atoms have certain properties (such as mass) that photons do not and the ring configuration makes them useful for applications such as precision gyroscopes. We discuss how they could be employed in useful measurement schemes and investigate how practical c…
With the increase of complexity and coherence of superconducting systems made using the principles of circuit quantum electrodynamics, more accurate methods are needed for the characterization, analysis and optimization of these quantum processors. Here we introduce a new method of modelling that can be applied to superconducting structures involving multiple Josephson junctions, high-Q superconducting cavities, external ports, and voltage sources. Our technique, an extension of our previous work on single-port structures [1], permits the derivation of system Hamiltonians that are capable of r…
Frequency entangled photon sources are in high demand in a variety of optical quantum technologies, including quantum key distribution, cluster state quantum computation and quantum metrology. In the recent decade, chip-scale entangled photon sources have been developed using silicon platforms, offering robustness, large scalability and CMOS technology compatibility. Here, we report the generation of frequency correlated photon pairs using a 150-GHz silicon nitride ring cavity. First, the device is characterized for studying the phase matching condition during spontaneous four-wave mixing. Nex…
We show the possibility of noiseless amplification of an optical image in cavities containing a parametric oscillator. We consider a confocal ring cavity with plane mirrors and compare with the case of planar cavity. In the latter case the system operates with severe spatial limitations, while in the confocal case, there is the possibility of preserving the signal-to-noise ratio while amplifying uniformely the entire image.
Propagation of light pulses through negative group velocity media is known to give rise to a number of paradoxical situations that seem to violate causality. The solution of these paradoxes has triggered the investigation of a number of interesting and unexpected features of light propagation. Here we report a combined theoretical and experimental study of the ring-down oscillations in optical cavities filled with a medium with such a strongly negative frequency dispersion to give a negative round-trip group delay time. We theoretically anticipate that causality imposes the existence of additi…
Optical cavities are one of the best ways to increase atom-light coupling and will be a key ingredient for future quantum technologies that rely on light-matter interfaces. We demonstrate that traveling-wave "ring" cavities can achieve a greatly reduced mode waist $w$, leading to larger atom-cavity coupling strength, relative to conventional standing-wave cavities for given mirror separation and stability. Additionally, ring cavities can achieve arbitrary transverse-mode spacing simultaneously with the large mode-waist reductions. Following these principles, we build a parabolic atom-ring cavi…
We propose a method of an improving quality of a ring cavity which is imperfect due to non-unit mirror reflectivity. The method is based on using squeezed states of light pulses illuminating the mirror and gradual homodyne detection of a radiation escaping from the cavity followed by single displacement and single squeezing operation performed on the released state. We discuss contribution of this method in process of storing unknown coherent and known squeezed state and generation of squeezing in the optical ring cavities.
We predict that an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate strongly coupled to an intracavity optical lattice can undergo resonant tunneling and directed transport when a constant and uniform bias force is applied. The bias force induces Bloch oscillations, causing amplitude and phase modulation of the lattice which resonantly modifies the site-to-site tunneling. For the right choice of parameters a net atomic current is generated. The transport velocity can be oriented oppositely to the bias force, with its amplitude and direction controlled by the detuning between the pump laser and the cavity. The …
We map a quantum Rabi ring, consisting of $N$ cavities arranged in a ring geometry, into an effective magnetic model containing the XY exchange and the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interactions. The analogue of the latter is induced by an artificial magnetic field, which modulates photon hopping between nearest-neighbor cavities with a phase. The mean-field behavior of both systems is almost identical, facilitating the description of the different phases in the quantum optical model through simple arguments of competing magnetic interactions. For the square geometry ($N=4$) the rich phase diagra…
We show that an intra-cavity medium with normal dispersion reduces the sensitivity of the cavity resonance frequency to a change in its length by a factor inversely proportional to the group index. Since the group index in an atomic medium can be very large, this effect can help in constructing highly frequency-stable cavities for various potential applications without taking additional measures for mechanical stability. The results also establish indirectly the opposite effect of enhanced sensitivity that can be realized for a negative dispersion corresponding to a group index close to a null…
We demonstrate that a photon echo can be implemented by all-optical means using an array of on-chip high-finesse ring cavities whose parameters are chirped in such a way as to support equidistant spectra of cavity modes. When launched into such a system, a classical or quantum optical signal -- even a single-photon field -- becomes distributed between individual cavities, giving rise to prominent coherence echo revivals at well-defined delay times, controlled by the chirp of cavity parameters. This effect enables long storage times for high-throughput broadband optical delay and quantum memory…
A novel regime of atom-cavity physics is explored, arising when large atom samples dispersively interact with high-finesse optical cavities. A stable far detuned optical lattice of several million rubidium atoms is formed inside an optical ring resonator by coupling equal amounts of laser light to each propagation direction of a longitudinal cavity mode. An adjacent longitudinal mode, detunedby about 3 GHz, is used to perform probe transmission spectroscopy of the system. The atom-cavity coupling for the lattice beams and the probe is dispersive and dissipation results only from the finite pho…
A robust quantum state transfer scheme is discussed for three atoms that are trapped by separated cavities linked via optical fibers in ring-connection. It is shown that, under the effective three-atom Ising model, arbitrary quantum state can be transferred from one atom to another deterministically via an auxiliary atom with maximum unit fidelity. The only required operation for this scheme is replicating turning on/off the local laser fields applied to the atoms for two steps with time cost $\frac{\sqrt{2}π}{Γ_{0}}$. The scheme is insensitive to cavity leakage and atomic position due to the …
Strongly interacting atom-cavity systems within a network with many nodes constitute a possible realization for a quantum internet which allows for quantum communication and computation on the same platform. To implement such large-scale quantum networks, nanophotonic resonators are promising candidates because they can be scalably fabricated and interconnected with waveguides and optical fibers. By integrating arrays of ring resonators into a vapor cell we show that thermal rubidium atoms above room temperature can be coupled to photonic cavities as building blocks for chip-scale hybrid circu…
Multi-photon interference is at the heart of photonic quantum technologies. Arrays of integrated cavities can support bright sources of single-photons with high purity and small footprint, but the inevitable spectral distinguishability between photons generated from non-identical cavities is an obstacle to scaling. In principle, this problem can be alleviated by measuring photons with high timing resolution, which erases spectral information through the time-energy uncertainty relation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that detection can be implemented with a temporal resolution sufficient …
Integrated photonic circuits provide a versatile toolbox of functionalities for advanced quantum optics applications. Here, we demonstrate an essential component of such a system in the form of a Purcell enhanced single-photon source based on a quantum dot coupled to a robust on-chip integrated resonator. For that, we develop GaAs monolithic ring cavities based on distributed Bragg reflector ridge waveguides. Under resonant excitation conditions, we observe an over twofold spontaneous emission rate enhancement using Purcell effect and gain a full coherent optical control of a QD-two-level syst…
We introduce a simple scheme to efficiently compute photon exchange-correlation contributions due to the coupling to transversal photons as formulated in the newly developed quantum-electrodynamical density functional theory (QEDFT). Our construction employs the optimized-effective potential (OEP) approach by means of the Sternheimer equation to avoid the explicit calculation of unoccupied states. We demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme by applying it to an exactly solvable GaAs quantum ring model system, a single azulene molecule, and chains of sodium dimers, all located in optical caviti…
We report on trapping and cooling Li-6 atoms in a monolithic ring bowtie cavity. To make the cavity insensitive to magnetic fields used to tune atomic interactions, we constructed it entirely from fused silica and Zerodur. The components were assembled using hydroxide bonding, which we show can be compatible with ultra-high vacuum. Backscattering in high-finesse ring cavities readily causes trap intensity fluctuations and heating, but with phase-controlled bi-directional pumping the trap lifetime can be made long enough for quantum gas experiments in both the crossed-beam trap (unidirectional …
Quantum enhanced microscopy allows for measurements at high sensitivities and low damage. Recently, multi-pass microscopy was introduced as such a scheme, exploiting the sensitivity enhancement offered by multiple photon-sample interactions. Here we theoretically and numerically compare three different contrast enhancing techniques that are all based on self-imaging cavities: CW cavity enhanced microscopy, cavity ring-down microscopy and multi-pass microscopy. We show that all three schemes can lead to sensitivities beyond the standard quantum limit.
We present a detailed numerical analysis of the temperature limit and timescale of cavity cooling of a dilute gas in the quantum regime for particles and light. For a cavity with a linewidth smaller than the recoil frequency efficient cooling towards quantum degeneracy is facilitated by applying a tailored sequence of laser pulses transferring the particles towards lower momenta. Two-particle Monte Carlo wave function simulations reveal strongly improved cooling properties for a ring versus a standing-wave geometry. Distinct quantum correlations and cooling limits for bosons and fermions demon…
Efficiently discriminating beams carrying different orbital angular momentum (OAM) is of fundamental importance for various applications including high capacity optical communication and quantum information processing. We design and experimentally verify a distinguished method for effectively splitting different OAM-carried beams by introducing Dove prisms in a ring cavity. Because of rotational symmetry broken of two OAM-carried beams with opposite topological charges, their transmission spectra will split. When mode and impedance matches between the cavity and one OAM-carried beam are achiev…
To implement quantum light sources based on quantum emitters in applications, it is desirable to improve the extraction efficiency of single photons. In particular controlling the directionality and solid angle of the emission are key parameters, for instance, to couple single photons into optical fibers and send the information encoded in quantum light over long distances, for quantum communication applications. In addition, fundamental studies of the radiative behavior of quantum emitters, including studies of coherence and blinking, benefit from such improved photon collection. Quantum dots…
