Multi-photon interference is at the heart of photonic quantum technologies. Arrays of integrated cavities can support bright sources of single-photons with high purity and small footprint, but the inevitable spectral distinguishability between photons generated from non-identical cavities is an obstacle to scaling. In principle, this problem can be alleviated by measuring photons with high timing resolution, which erases spectral information through the time-energy uncertainty relation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that detection can be implemented with a temporal resolution sufficient to interfere photons detuned on the scales necessary for cavity-based integrated photon sources. By increasing the effective timing resolution of the system from 200ps to 20ps, we observe a 20% increase in the visibility of quantum interference between independent photons from integrated micro-ring resonator sources that are detuned by 6.8GHz. We go on to show how time-resolved detection of non-ideal photons can be used to improve the fidelity of an entangling operation and to mitigate the reduction of computational complexity in boson sampling experiments. These results pave the way for photonic quantum information processing with many photon sources without the need for active alignment.
We demonstrate polarization-entanglement for non-degenerate and degenerate photon-pairs generated through Kerr-nonlinearity in a nano-scale silicon-on-insulator(SOI) waveguide. We use a compact counter propagating configuration to create two-photon polarization-entangled state, |H>|H> + |V>|V>. We observe two-photon interference with visibility > 91% and > 80% for non-degenerate and degenerate photon-pairs, respectively. The experimental structure can be implemented on optical chips as an integrated source of entangled photons for future quantum computer and communication applications.
A new class of error-correcting quantum codes is introduced capable of stabilizing qubits against spontaneous decay arising from couplings to statistically independent reservoirs. These quantum codes are based on the idea of using an embedded quantum code and exploiting the classical information available about which qubit has been affected by the environment. They are immediately relevant for quantum computation and information processing using arrays of trapped ions or nuclear spins. Interesting relations between these quantum codes and basic notions of design theory are established.
Here we present a simple and robust method to build on-the-fly configurable quantum gates based on a photonic exchange between quantum nodes. The idea is based on a high reflectivity of Bragg grating structures near resonant wavelengths. The control is exerted by applying an external strongly off-resonant or even a static electromagnetic field and taking advantage of the Kerr effect. When the nonlinear phase shift is strong enough, the Bragg mirror disappears, thereby allowing a transmission of a wave packet from one node to another. An example of a protocol for quantum logic gates that relies…

Using strong off-resonant excitation and collecting photons from the ultra-stable zero-phonon line optical transitions, we show a two-photon interference contr…
Solid-state quantum emitters are promising candidates for the realization of quantum networks, owing to their long-lived spin memories, high-fidelity local operations, and optical connectivity for long-range entanglement. However, due to differences in local environment, solid-state emitters typically feature a range of distinct transition frequencies, which makes it challenging to create optically mediated entanglement between arbitrary emitter pairs. We propose and demonstrate an efficient method for entangling emitters with optical transitions separated by many linewidths. In our approach, …
We review our experiments on quantum information processing with neutral atoms in optical lattices and magnetic microtraps. Atoms in an optical lattice in the Mott insulator regime serve as a large qubit register. A spin-dependent lattice is used to split and delocalize the atomic wave functions in a controlled and coherent way over a defined number of lattice sites. This is used to experimentally demonstrate a massively parallel quantum gate array, which allows the creation of a highly entangled many-body cluster state through coherent collisions between atoms on neighbouring lattice sites. I…
High-dimensional encoding and hyper-entanglement are unique features that distinguish optical photons from other quantum information carriers, leading to improved system efficiency and novel quantum functions. However, the disparate requirements to control different optical degrees of freedom have prevent the development of complete integrated platforms that is capable of leveraging the complementary benefits of high-dimensional encoding and hyper-entanglement at the same time. Here we demonstrate the chip-scale solution to the generation and manipulation of high-dimensional hyper-entanglement…
We present the physical model for the entropy source of a quantum random number generator chip based on the quantum fluctuations of the photon number emitted by light-emitting diodes. This model, combined with a characterization of the chip, estimates a quantum min-entropy of over 0.98 per bit without post-processing. Finally, we show with our model that the performances in terms of security are robust against fluctuations over time.
We describe an approach to the high-fidelity measurement of a superconducting qubit using an on-chip microwave photon counter. The protocol relies on the transient response of a dispersively coupled measurement resonator to map the state of the qubit to "bright" and "dark" cavity pointer states that are characterized by a large differential photon occupation. Following this mapping, we photodetect the resonator using the Josephson Photomultipler (JPM), which transitions between classically distinguishable flux states when cavity photon occupation exceeds a certain threshold. Our technique prov…

In particular, atom-surface interactions define physical limits for miniaturization and coherent operation. This implies constraints for applications in quantum information processing or matter wave interferometry. We focus on atom-surface interaction potentials induced by vacuum fluctuations (Van der Waals and Casimir-Polder forces), and on transitions between atomic quantum states that are induced by ther…
The well studied quantum optical Schrödinger cat state is a superposition of two distinguishable states, with quantum coherence between these macroscopically distinguishable states being of foundational and, in the context of quantum-information processing, practical use. We refer to these quantum-optical cat states as quantum dichotomous states, reflecting that the state is a superposition of two options, and we introduce the term quantum multichotomous state to refer to a superposition of multiple macroscopically distinguishable options. For a single degree of freedom, such as position, we c…
