An experiment is proposed to test the interference aspect of the Quantum Interference Computer approach
The two-slit interference experiment has been modelled a number of times using Gaussian wave-packets and the Bohm-de Broglie causal interpretation. Here we consider the experiment with pinholes instead of slits and model the experiment in terms of two-dimensional Gaussian wave-packets and the Bohm-de Broglie causal interpretation.
In this article, we propose a general principle of quantum interference for quantum system, and based on this we propose a new type of computing machine, the duality computer, that may outperform in principle both classical computer and the quantum computer. According to the general principle of quantum interference, the very essence of quantum interference is the interference of the sub-waves of the quantum system itself. A quantum system considered here can be any quantum system: a single microscopic particle, a composite quantum system such as an atom or a molecule, or a loose collection of…
It is first pointed out that there is a common mathematical model for the universe and the quantum computer. The former is called the histories approach to quantum mechanics and the latter is called measurement based quantum computation. Although a rigorous concrete model for the universe has not been completed, a quantum measure and integration theory has been developed which may be useful for future progress. In this work we show that the quantum integral is the unique functional satisfying certain basic physical and mathematical principles. Since the set of paths (or trajectories) for a qua…
Quantum error correcting codes (QECC) are the key ingredients both for fault-tolerant quantum computation and quantum communication. Teleportation-based error correction (TEC) helps in detecting and correcting operational and erasure errors by performing X and Z measurements during teleportation. Here we demonstrate the TEC protocol for the detection and correction of a single bit-flip error by proposing a new quantum circuit. A single phase-flip error can also be detected and corrected using the above protocol. For the first time, we illustrate detection and correction of erasure error in the…

We propose to use a collective excitation blockade mechanism to identify errors that occur due to disturbances of single atoms in ensemble quantum registers where qubits are stored in the collective population of different internal atomic states. A simple error correction procedure and a simple decoherence-free encoding of ensemble qubits in the hyperfine states of alkali atoms are presented.
Experimental realization of automated error correction is demonstrated through IBM Quantum Experience for Bell and GHZ states using a measurement based approach upon ancilla qubits. The measurement automatically activates error correcting unitary operations to restore the system to its original entangled state. We illustrate the algorithm for the maximally entangled qudit case by applying appropriate Hadamard and Controlled-NOT gates.
We implement the DiVincenzo-Shor 5 qubit quantum error correcting code into a solid-state quantum register. The quantum register is a multi charge-qubit system in a semiconductor environment, where the main sources of noise are phase decoherence and relaxation. We evaluate the decay of the density matrix for this multi-qubit system and perform regular quantum error corrections. The performance of the error correction in this realistic system is found to yield an improvement of the fidelity. The fidelity can be maintained arbitrarily close to one by sufficiently increasing the frequency of erro…

The concept of multiple particle interference is discussed, using insights provided by the classical theory of error correcting codes. This leads to a discussion of error correction in a quantum communication channel or a quantum computer. Methods of error correction in the quantum regime are presented, and their limitations assessed. A quantum channel can recover from arbitrary decoherence of x qubits if K bits of quantum information are encoded using n quantum bits, where K/n can be greater than 1-2 H(2x/n), but must be less than 1 - 2 H(x/n). This implies exponential reduction of decoherenc…
A major challenge for quantum computation in ion trap systems is scalable integration of error correction and fault tolerance. We analyze a distributed architecture with rapid high fidelity local control within nodes and entangled links between nodes alleviating long-distance transport. We demonstrate fault-tolerant operator measurements which are used for error correction and non-local gates. This scheme is readily applied to linear ion traps which cannot be scaled up beyond a few ions per individual trap but which have access to a probabilistic entanglement mechanism. A proof-of-concept syst…
Construction of a fault-tolerant quantum computer remains a challenging problem due to unavoidable noise in quantum states and the fragility of quantum entanglement. However, most of the error-correcting codes increases the complexity of the algorithms, thereby decreasing any quantum advantage. Here we present a task-specific error-correction technique that provides a complete protection over a restricted set of quantum states. Specifically, we give an automated error correction in Superdense Coding algorithms utilizing n-qubit generalized Bell states. At its core, it is based on non-destructi…
Interference of photons emerging from independent sources is essential for modern quantum information processing schemes, above all quantum repeaters and linear-optics quantum computers. We report an observation of non-classical interference of two single photons originating from two independent, separated sources, which were actively synchronized with an r.m.s. timing jitter of 260 fs. The resulting (two-photon) interference visibility was 83(+/-)4 %.
The population decay due to a small opening in an otherwise closed cavity supporting chaotic classical dynamics displays a quantum correction on top of the classical exponential form, a pure manifestation of quantum coherence that acquires a universal form and can be explained by path interference. Being coherent, such enhancement is prone to decoherence effects due to the coupling of the system to an external environment. We study this interplay between incoherent and coherent quantum corrections to decay by evaluating, within a Caldeira-Legget scenario, off-diagonal contributions to the deco…

Errors in quantum computers are of two kinds: sudden perturbations to isolated qubits, and slow random drifts of all the qubits. The latter may be reduced, but not eliminated, by means of symmetrization, namely by using many replicas of the computer, and forcing their joint quantum state to be completely symmetric. On the other hand, isolated errors can be corrected by quantum codewords that represent a logical qubit in a redundant way, by several physical qubits. If one of the physical qubits is perturbed, for example if it gets entangled with an unknown environment, there still is enough inf…

We present an architecture to investigate wave-particle duality in $N$-path interferometers on a universal quantum computer involving as low as $2\log N$ qubits and develop a measurement scheme which allows the efficient extraction of quantifiers of interference visibility and which-path information. We implement our algorithms for interferometers with up to $N=16$ paths in proof-of-principle experiments on a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) device using down to $\mathcal{O}(\log N)$ gates and despite increasing noise consistently observe a complementary behavior between interference vi…
Decoherence is the main problem to be solved before quantum computers can be built. To control decoherence, it is possible to use error correction methods, but these methods are themselves noisy quantum computation processes. In this work we study the ability of Steane's and Shor's fault-tolerant recovering methods, as well a modification of Steane's ancilla network, to correct errors in qubits. We test a way to measure correctly ancilla's fidelity for these methods, and state the possibility of carrying out an effective error correction through a noisy quantum channel, even using noisy error …
We estimate the resource requirements for the quantum simulation of the ground state energy of the one dimensional quantum transverse Ising model (TIM), based on the surface code implementation of a fault tolerant quantum computer. The surface code approach has one of the highest known tolerable error rates (1%) which makes it currently one of the most practical quantum computing schemes. Compared to results of the same model using the concatenated Steane code, the current results indicate that the simulation time is comparable but the number of physical qubits for the surface code is 2-3 orde…

In a quantum computer any superposition of inputs evolves unitarily into the corresponding superposition of outputs. It has been recently demonstrated that such computers can dramatically speed up the task of finding factors of large numbers -- a problem of great practical significance because of its cryptographic applications. Instead of the nearly exponential ($\sim \exp L^{1/3}$, for a number with $L$ digits) time required by the fastest classical algorithm, the quantum algorithm gives factors in a time polynomial in $L$ ($\sim L^2$). This enormous speed-up is possible in principle because …

Emerging models of quantum computation driven by multi-photon quantum interference, while not universal, may offer an exponential advantage over classical computers for certain problems. Implementing these circuits via geometric phase gates could mitigate requirements for error correction to achieve fault tolerance while retaining their relative physical simplicity. We report an experiment in which a geometric phase is embedded in an optical network with no closed-loops, enabling quantum interference between two photons as a function of the phase.
We present a contextualist statistical realistic model for quantum-like representations in physics, cognitive science and psychology. We apply this model to describe cognitive experiments to check quantum-like structures of mental processes. The crucial role is played by interference of probabilities for mental observables. Recently one of such experiments based on recognition of images was performed. This experiment confirmed our prediction on quantum-like behaviour of mind. In our approach ``quantumness of mind'' has no direct relation to the fact that the brain (as any physical body) is com…
Real-time clustering of big performance data generated by the telecommunication networks requires domain-specific high performance compute infrastructure to detect anomalies. In this paper, we evaluate noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers characterized by low decoherence times, for K-means clustering and propose three strategies to generate shorter-depth quantum circuits needed to overcome the limitation of NISQ computers. The strategies are based on exploiting; i) quantum interference, ii) negative rotations and iii) destructive interference. By comparing our implementations on I…
We derive an effective equation of motion within the steady-state subspace of a large family of Markovian open systems (i.e., Lindbladians) due to perturbations of their Hamiltonians and system-bath couplings. Under mild and realistic conditions, competing dissipative processes destructively interfere without the need for fine-tuning and produce no dissipation within the steady-state subspace. In quantum error-correction, these effects imply that continuously error-correcting Lindbladians are robust to calibration errors, including miscalibrations consisting of operators undetectable by the co…
We study fault-tolerant error correction in a quantum memory constructed as a two-dimensional model of Fibonacci anyons on a torus, in the presence of thermal noise represented by pair-creation processes and measurement errors. The correction procedure is based on the cellular automaton decoders originating in the works of Gács and Harrington. Through numerical simulations, we observe that this code behaves fault-tolerantly and that threshold behavior is likely present. Hence, we provide strong evidence for the existence of a fault-tolerant universal non-Abelian topological quantum computer.
This study considers implementations of error correction in a simulation language on a classical computer. Error correction will be necessarily in quantum computing and quantum information. We will give some examples of the implementations of some error correction codes. These implementations will be made in a more general quantum simulation language on a classical computer in the language Mathematica. The intention of this research is to develop a programming language that is able to make simulations of all quantum algorithms and error corrections in the same framework. The program code imple…
Continuous-variable systems protected by bosonic quantum error-correcting codes have emerged as a promising platform for quantum information processing. To date, design of codewords has centered on optimizing the occupation of basis states in the error-relevant basis. Here, we propose utilizing the phase degree of freedom in basis state probability amplitudes to devise codes that feature destructive interference, and thus reduced overlap, between error codewords. To showcase, we first consider the correction of excitation loss using single-mode codes with Fock-space parity structure and show t…
Certain physical aspects of quantum error correction are discussed for a quantum computer (n-qubit register) in contact with a decohering environment. Under rather plausible assumptions upon the form of the computer-environment interaction, the efficiency of a general correcting procedure is evaluated as a function of the spontaneous-decay duration and the rank of errors covered by the procedure. It is proved that the probability of errors can be made arbitrarily small by enhancing the correction method, provided the decohering interaction is represented by a bounded operator.
We consider theoretically the interplay between Zeeman coupling and exchange-induced swap action in spin-based quantum dot quantum computer models in the presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields, which are invariably present in real systems. We estimate quantitatively swap errors caused by the inhomogeneous field, establishing that error correction would, in principle, be possible in the presence of non-uniform magnetic fields in realistic structures.
It is shown that quantum tomography can detect and correct unlimited number of errors during the evaluation of quantum algorithms on quantum computer.
We demonstrate that networks of locally connected processing units with a primitive learning capability exhibit behavior that is usually only attributed to quantum systems. We describe networks that simulate single-photon beam-splitter and Mach-Zehnder interferometer experiments on a causal, event-by-event basis and demonstrate that the simulation results are in excellent agreement with quantum theory. We also show that this approach can be generalized to simulate universal quantum computers.
We investigate the impact of loss (amplitude damping) and decoherence (phase damping) on the performance of a simple quantum computer which solves the one-bit Deutsch problem. The components of this machine are beamsplitters and nonlinear optical Kerr cells, but errors primarily originate from the latter. We develop models to describe the effect of these errors on a quantum optical Fredkin gate. The results are used to analyze possible error correction strategies in a complete quantum computer. We find that errors due to loss can be avoided perfectly by appropriate design techniques, while dec…
Recent progress in quantum cryptography and quantum computers has given hope to their imminent practical realization. An essential element at the heart of the application of these quantum systems is a quantum error correction scheme. We propose a new technique based on the use of coding in order to detect and correct errors due to imperfect transmission lines in quantum cryptography or memories in quantum computers. We give a particular example of how to detect a decohered qubit in order to transmit or preserve with high fidelity the original qubit.
The class of problems represented by frustrated cluster loops, FCL, is a robust set of problems that spans a wide range of computational difficulty and that are easy to determine what their solutions are. Here, we use frustrated cluster loops to test the relative performance of the D-Wave without post-processing and the D-Wave with multi-qubit correction (MQC) post-processing. MQC post-processing has shown itself exceptionally beneficial in improving the performance of the D-Wave 2000Q when processing difficult FCL problems.
We study the robustness of quantum computers under the influence of errors modelled by strictly contractive channels. A channel $T$ is defined to be strictly contractive if, for any pair of density operators $ρ,σ$ in its domain, $\| Tρ- Tσ\|_1 \le k \| ρ-σ\|_1$ for some $0 \le k < 1$ (here $\| \cdot \|_1$ denotes the trace norm). In other words, strictly contractive channels render the states of the computer less distinguishable in the sense of quantum detection theory. Starting from the premise that all experimental procedures can be carried out with finite precision, we argue that there exis…

Quantum computers use the quantum interference of different computational paths to enhance correct outcomes and suppress erroneous outcomes of computations. In effect, they follow the same logical paradigm as (multi-particle) interferometers. We show how most known quantum algorithms, including quantum algorithms for factorising and counting, may be cast in this manner. Quantum searching is described as inducing a desired relative phase between two eigenvectors to yield constructive interference on the sought elements and destructive interference on the remaining terms.
Determining the prime factors of a given number N is a problem, which requires super-polynomial time for conventional digital computers. A polynomial-time algorithm was invented by P. Shor for quantum computers. However, the realization of quantum computers is associated with significant technological challenges in achieving and preserving quantum entanglement. Prime factorization can be also solved by using classical wave interference without quantum entanglement. In this work, we present experimental data showing prime factorization by utilizing spin wave interference. The prime factorizatio…
Quantum computers use the quantum interference of different computational paths to enhance correct outcomes and suppress erroneous outcomes of computations. A common pattern underpinning quantum algorithms can be identified when quantum computation is viewed as multi-particle interference. We use this approach to review (and improve) some of the existing quantum algorithms and to show how they are related to different instances of quantum phase estimation. We provide an explicit algorithm for generating any prescribed interference pattern with an arbitrary precision.
Quantum error correction holds the key to scaling up quantum computers. Cosmic ray events severely impact the operation of a quantum computer by causing chip-level catastrophic errors, essentially erasing the information encoded in a chip. Here, we present a distributed error correction scheme to combat the devastating effect of such events by introducing an additional layer of quantum erasure error correcting code across separate chips. We show that our scheme is fault tolerant against chip-level catastrophic errors and discuss its experimental implementation using superconducting qubits with…
We present error mitigation (EM) techniques for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers (QC) based on density matrix purification and perturbative corrections to the target energy. We incorporate this scheme into the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) and demonstrate chemically-accurate ground state energy calculations of various alkali metal hydrides using IBM quantum computers. Both the density matrix purification improvements and the perturbative corrections require only meager classical computational resources, and are conducted exclusively as post-processing of the measured density …
We study the decoherence of a quantum computer in an environment which is inherently correlated in time and space. We first derive the nonunitary time evolution of the computer and environment in the presence of a stabilizer error correction code, providing a general way to quantify decoherence for a quantum computer. The general theory is then applied to the spin-boson model. Our results demonstrate that effects of long-range correlations can be systematically reduced by small changes in the error correction codes.
Quantum computing (QC) is at the cusp of a revolution. Machines with 100 quantum bits (qubits) are anticipated to be operational by 2020 [googlemachine,gambetta2015building], and several-hundred-qubit machines are around the corner. Machines of this scale have the capacity to demonstrate quantum supremacy, the tipping point where QC is faster than the fastest classical alternative for a particular problem. Because error correction techniques will be central to QC and will be the most expensive component of quantum computation, choosing the lowest-overhead error correction scheme is critical to…
We develop a classical bit-flip correction method to mitigate measurement errors on quantum computers. This method can be applied to any operator, any number of qubits, and any realistic bit-flip probability. We first demonstrate the successful performance of this method by correcting the noisy measurements of the ground-state energy of the longitudinal Ising model. We then generalize our results to arbitrary operators and test our method both numerically and experimentally on IBM quantum hardware. As a result, our correction method reduces the measurement error on the quantum hardware by up t…
Lately, much attention has been given to quantum algorithms that solve pattern recognition tasks in machine learning. Many of these quantum machine learning algorithms try to implement classical models on large-scale universal quantum computers that have access to non-trivial subroutines such as Hamiltonian simulation, amplitude amplification and phase estimation. We approach the problem from the opposite direction and analyse a distance-based classifier that is realised by a simple quantum interference circuit. After state preparation, the circuit only consists of a Hadamard gate as well as t…

Non-classical interference of photons lies at the heart of optical quantum information processing. This effect is exploited in universal quantum gates as well as in purpose-built quantum computers that solve the BosonSampling problem. Although non-classical interference is often associated with perfectly indistinguishable photons this only represents the degenerate case, hard to achieve under realistic experimental conditions. Here we exploit tunable distinguishability to reveal the full spectrum of multi-photon non-classical interference. This we investigate in theory and experiment by contro…
Wave-particle duality finds a natural application for electrons or light propagating in disordered media where coherent corrections to transport are given by two-wave interference. For scatterers with internal degrees of freedom, these corrections are observed to be much smaller than would be expected for structureless scatterers. By examining the basic example of the scattering of one photon by two spin-1/2 atoms--a case-study for coherent backscattering--we demonstrate that the loss of interference strength is associated with which-path information stored by the scattering atoms.
Universal quantum computers promise a dramatic speed-up over classical computers but a full-size realization remains challenging. However, intermediate quantum computational models have been proposed that are not universal, but can solve problems that are strongly believed to be classically hard. Aaronson and Arkhipov have shown that interference of single photons in random optical networks can solve the hard problem of sampling the bosonic output distribution which is directly connected to computing matrix permanents. Remarkably, this computation does not require measurement-based interaction…
Using a numerical simulation of the evolution of a qubit interacting with the environment we show that quantum error detection and correction can work effectively even when the recovery procedure introduces errors.
We consider charge qubits based on shallow donor electron states in silicon and coupled quantum dots in GaAs. Specifically, we study the feasibility of P$_2^+$ charge qubits in Si, focusing on single qubit properties in terms of tunnel coupling between the two phosphorus donors and qubit decoherence caused by electron-phonon interaction. By taking into consideration the multi-valley structure of the Si conduction band, we show that inter-valley quantum interference has important consequences for single-qubit operations of P$_2^+$ charge qubits. In particular, the valley interference leads to a…
We propose a way to measure the qubit state of an arbitrary sub-ensemble of atoms in an array without significantly disturbing the quantum information in the unmeasured atoms. The idea is to first site-selectively transfer atoms out of the qubit basis so that one of the two states at a time is put into an auxiliary state. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) light will then protect most states while detection light is scattered from atoms in the auxiliary state, which is made immune to the EIT protection by angular momentum selection rules and carefully chosen light polarization. The…
QCD jets provide one of the best avenues to extract information about the quark-gluon plasma produced in the aftermath of ultra relativistic heavy ions collisions. The structure of jets is determined by multiparticle quantum interference hard to tackle using perturbative methods. When jets evolve in a QCD medium this interference pattern is modified, adding another layer of complexity. By taking advantage of the recent developments in quantum technologies, such effects might be better understood via direct quantum simulation of jet evolution. In this work, we introduce a precursor to such simu…
