We discuss aspects of gravitational modifications of Schrodinger dynamics proposed by Diosi and Penrose. We consider first the Diosi-Penrose criterion for gravitationally induced state vector reduction, and compute the reduction time expected for a superposition of a uniform density cubical solid in two positions displaced by a small fraction of the cube side. We show that the predicted effect is much smaller than would be observable in the proposed Marshall et al. mirror experiment. We then consider the ``Schrodinger -Newton'' equation for an N-particle system. We show that in the independent particle approximation, it differs from the usual Hartree approximation applied to the Newtonian potential by self-interaction terms, which do not have a consistent Born rule interpretation. This raises doubts about the use of the Schrodinger-Newton equation to calculate gravitational effects on molecular interference experiments. When the effects of Newtonian gravitation on molecular diffraction are calculated using the standard many-body Schrodinger equation, no washing out of the interference pattern is predicted.
We analyze a recent pedagogical proposal for an alternative treatment of the angular part of the Schrödinger equation with a central potential. We show that the authors' arguments are unclear, unconvincing and misleading.
In the recent paper, Ref. 1, the l-waves Schrödinger equation for the Cornell's potential is solved in quantum mechanics with a generalized uncertainty principle by following Ref. 2. It is showed here that the approach of Ref. 2 can only be used for the s-waves, and then the solution given in Ref. 1 would be true only in the special case l=0. Furthermore, it is highlighted that the abstract and the conclusion of Ref. 1 do not accurately reflect the results of the paper.
Recently, Faria et al [Phys. Lett. A 305 (2002) 322] discussed an example in which the Heisenberg and the Schrodinger pictures of quantum mechanics gave different results. We identify the mistake in their reasoning and conclude that the example they discussed does not support the inequivalence of these two pictures.
We argue that the "reduced wave function", proposed recently [Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 75}, 2255 (1995)], contains conditional and restricted information on the reduced system. The concept of "reduced wave function" can thus not represent a relevant alternative to the common reduced dynamics methods.
We present arguments proving that the results obtained by Hassanabadi and coworkers in the study of the D-dimensional Schrödinger equation with molecular Hua potential through the supersymmetry method in quantum mechanics are incorrect. We identified the inconsistencies in their reasoning on the allowed values of the parameter q and we constructed the correct energy spectrum.
We show that the solution obtained by Bekkar {\it et al.} in their comment [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 68}, 016101 (2003)] on Guedes's work of solving the quantum system with a time-dependent linear potential is still {\it not} the {\it general} one of the Schrödinger equation. It is concluded that Bekkar {\it et al.}'s solution (corresponding to the linear Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant) and our solution (corresponding to the quadratic-form Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant) presented here will constitute together a complete set of solutions (general solutions) of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the s…
We comment on the paper "Feynman Effective Classical Potential in the Schrodinger Formulation"[Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3303 (1998)]. We show that the results in this paper about the time evolution of a wave packet in a double well potential can be properly explained by resorting to a variational principle for the effective action. A way to improve on these results is also discussed.
The Comment of Brown and Carrington Jr. (BC) has two main points: 1) that the contraction idea of Shimshovitz and Tannor (ST) can be used for any DVR basis, not necessarily periodic, and 2) that the biorthogonal basis introduced by ST is unnecessary. We fully agree with the first point and in fact have several works that were in press at the time of the Comment that illustrate this. On the second point we show that BC implicitly use the biorthogonal basis of ST.
Some of the conclusions of an improved JWKB method by Eleuch H., Rostovtsev Y. V. and Scully M. O., EPL, 89 (2010) 50004 are clarified. The degree of approximation to exact solutions is quantitatively assessed. The improved JWKB method is also contrasted with the method of comparison equations.
Recently we have reanalyzed the consistency of the solutions of the space fractional Schrödinger equation found in a piecewise manner, and showed that an exact and a proper treatment of the relevant integrals prove that they are consistent. In this comment, for clarity, we present additional information about the critical integrals and describe how their analytic continuation is accomplished. [doi: 10.1063/1.4705268]
A proof is given that if the nonlinear Schrodinger wave function is constrained to have support over only a finite volume in configuration space, then the total energy is bounded from below for either sign of the logarithmic term in the Hamiltonian. It is concluded that the usual assumption about the sign of the logarithmic term made by Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski is not the only possibility, and that a sensible theory can be made with the opposite sign as well.
We discuss a recent test of the performance of the kinetic energy partition method (KEP) through its application to two separable quantum-mechanical models. We argue that one of the benchmark models is exceedingly simple for testing any realistic approximate method and that almost any reasonable approach yields better results. In the second example our exact benchmark eigenvalues disagree considerably with those chosen by the authors for comparison, which casts doubts on the accuracy of their KEP approach.
The Schrödinger-Newton [SN] equation describes the effect of self-gravity on the evolution of a quantum system, and it has been proposed that gravitationally induced decoherence drives the system to one of the stationary solutions of the SN equation. However, the equation by itself lacks a decoherence mechanism, because it does not possess any stochastic feature. In the present work we derive a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation, starting from the Einstein-Langevin equation in the theory of stochastic semiclassical gravity. We specialize this equation to the case of a s…
Recently, Olavo has proposed several derivations of the Schrodinger equation from different sets of hypothesis ("axiomatizations") [Phys. Rev. A 61, 052109 (2000)]. One of them is based on the infinitesimal inverse Weyl transform of a classically evolved phase space density. We show however that the Schrodinger equation can only be obtained in that manner for linear or quadratic potential functions.
In a recent paper by Jafarov, Nagiyev, Oste and Van der Jeugt (2020 {\sl J.\ Phys.\ A} {\bf 53} 485301), a confined model of the non-relativistic quantum harmonic oscillator, where the effective mass and the angular frequency are dependent on the position, was constructed and it was shown that the confinement parameter gets quantized. By using a point canonical transformation starting from the constant-mass Schrödinger equation for the Rosen-Morse II potential, it is shown here that similar results can be easily obtained without quantizing the confinement parameter. In addition, an extension t…
We study the correction of the energy spectrum of a gravitational quantum well due to the combined effect of the braneworld model with infinite extra dimensions and generalized uncertainty principle. The correction terms arise from a natural deformation of a semiclassical theory of quantum gravity governed by the Schrödinger-Newton equation based on a minimal length framework. The two fold correction in the energy yields new values of the spectrum, which are closer to the values obtained in the GRANIT experiment. This raises the possibility that the combined theory of the semiclassical quantum…
In the paper with the above-noted title, T. C. Wallstrom claims that the description of the particle's motion as a certain "conservative" diffusion is not equivalent to quantum mechanics in spite of the fact that the Madelung "hydrodynamic" equations, which provide the description of such a diffusion, can be converted to the Schroedinger equation. He pointed out that such a stochastic theory can be regarded as equivalent to conventional quantum mechanics only if they can derive from it not just the Madelung equations but also the condition that the circulation of the "probability fluid" is alw…
We propose a nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation that possesses the main properties of this equation such as the Galilean invariance, the weak separability of composite systems, and the homogeneity in the wave function. The modification is derived from the relativistic relation between the energy and momentum of free particle and, as such, it is the best relativistic extension of the Schrödinger equation that preserves the properties in question. The only change it effectively entails in the Schrödinger equation involves the conserved probability current. It is pointed out that …
Using purely physical arguments it is claimed that for ID Schrodinger operators with complex PT- Symmatric potentials having a purely real attractive potential well and a purely imaginary repulsive part, bound state eigenvalues will be discrete and real. This has been illustrated with several potentials possessing similar properties.
The recently suggested modification of the transverse electric contribution to the Lifshitz formula (S. K. Lamoreaux, arXiv:0801.1283) is discussed. We show that this modification is inconsistent with the data of two precise experiments, and violates the Nernst heat theorem. The preprint's suggestion concerning the resolution of the "apparent violation of the Third Law of Thermodynamics" is shown to be incorrect.
We propose a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation which takes into account the effect of extrinsic spacetime fluctuations. We use this equation to demonstrate gravitationally induced decoherence of two gaussian wave-packets, and obtain a decoherence criterion similar to those obtained in the earlier literature in the context of effects of gravity on the Schrödinger equation.
Recently D. A. R. Dalvit and S. K. Lamoreaux arXiv:0805.1676 [Phys. Rev. Lett. v.101, 163203 (2008)] suggested the modification of the reflection coefficients in the Lifshitz theory taking into account the screening effects and diffusion currents. We demonstrate that the suggested modification is thermodynamically and experimentally inconsistent.
We note that presenting Hydrogen atom Schrodinger equation in the case of arbitrary dimensions require simultaneous modification of the Coulomb potential that only in three dimensions has the form Z/r . This was not done in a number of relatively recent papers [1-5]. Therefore some results obtained there seem to be doubtful. Some required considerations in the area are mentioned.
In their recent paper [Nature Physics 15, 451 (2006)], Sakmann and Kasevich study the formation of fringe patterns in ultra-cold Bose gases and claim: `Here, we show how single shots can be simulated from numerical solutions of the time-dependent many-body Schrödinger equation.' It would be remarkable if they had solved this exponentially complex equation. Instead they solve nonlinear equations with the aim to approximate the solution of the Schrödinger equation. The authors proceed to criticize phase-space approaches to simulating quantum dynamics and claim the impossibility of interpreting s…
The Schrödinger-Newton equation has gained attention in the recent past as a nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation due to a gravitational self-interaction. Such a modification is expected from a fundamentally semi-classical theory of gravity, and can therefore be considered a test case for the necessity of the quantisation of the gravitational field. Here we provide a thorough study of the effects of the Schrödinger-Newton equation for a micron-sized sphere trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential. We discuss both the effect on the energy eigenstates and the dynamical behaviour …
In the paper by V.V. Nesvizhevsky et al., Phys. Rev. D 67, 102002 (2003), it is argued that the lowest quantum state of neutrons in the Earth's gravitational field has been experimentally identified. While this is most likely correct, it is imperative to investigate all alternative explanations of the result in order to close all loopholes, as it is the first experiment ever claimed to have observed gravitational quantum states. Here we show that geometrical effects in the experimental setup can mimic the results attributed to gravity. Modifications of the experimental setup to close these pos…
In a recent work, Kryuchkov, Suslov and Vega-Guzman [20013 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 46 104007] described a multi-parameter family of minimum-uncertainty states satisfying the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the harmonic oscillator. We show how a different parametrization and a proper geometrical insight reduces a complicated set of equations to two simple circular motions.
We introduce a modification in the relativistic hamiltonian in such a way that (1) the relativistic Schrödinger equations can always be based on an underlying Lévy process, (2) several families of particles with different rest masses can be selected, and finally (3) the corresponding Feynman diagrams are convergent when we have at least three different masses.
A nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation is proposed in which the Lagrangian density for the Schrödinger equation is extended by terms polynomial in $Δ^{m}\ln (Ψ^{*}/Ψ)$ multiplied by $Ψ^{*}Ψ$. This introduces a homogeneous nonlinearity in a Galilean invariant manner through the phase $S$ rather than the amplitude $R$ of the wave function $Ψ=R\exp (iS)$. From this general scheme we choose the simplest minimal model defined in some reasonable way. The model in question offers the simplest way to modify the Bohm formulation of quantum mechanics so as to allow a leading phase contribu…
We point out a misleading treatment in a recent paper published in this Journal [Eur. Phys. J. C (2018)78:106] regarding solutions for the Schrödinger equation with a anharmonic oscillator potential embedded in the background of a cosmic string mapped into biconfluent Heun equation. This fact jeopardizes the thermodynamical properties calculated in this system.
The problem of boundary behaviour at the origin of coordinates is discussed for D-dimensional Schrodinger equation in the framework of hyper spherical formalism, which have been often considered last time. We show that the Dirichlet condition, which seems as natural, is not mathematically well justified, on the contrary to the 3-dimensional case. The stronger argument in favour of Dirichlet boundary condition is the requirement of time independence of wave functions norm. The problem remains open for singular potentials.
We show that in classical mechanics, as well as in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics the equation of the relative motion for a two-body bound system at rest can be replaced by individual dynamical equations of the same kind as the first one, but with different parameters. We assume that in relativistic quantum mechanics the individual equations are Dirac equations with modified parameters in agreement with the individual Schrödinger equations. We find that products of solutions to the individual equations with correlated arguments are the quantum analogues of the classical representation of a …
We present arguments demonstrating that the application of the Nikiforov-Uvarov polynomial method to solve the Schrödinger equation with the Tietz-Hua potential is valid only when $e^{-b_{h}r_{e}}\leq c_{h}<1$ and $r_{0}<r<+\infty $. In particular, it is pointed out that the numerical results with $c_{h}\neq 0$ for the diatomic molecules $\mathrm{HF}$, $\mathrm{N}_{2}$, $\mathrm{I}_{2}$, $\mathrm{H}_{2}$, $\mathrm{O}_{2}$ and $\mathrm{O}_{2}^{+}$ given in Tables 3-5 by Hamzavi and co-workers are wrong. When $-1\leq c_{h}<0$ or $0<c_{h}<e^{-b_{h}r_{e}}$, this approach is not suitable. In both c…
A diffusive stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE) is shown for the first time, such that contributes to a non-completely positive dynamics. This contradicts to a recent Letter [arXiv:1303.4284] claiming that SSEs, under most general conditions, enforce complete-positivity. The general form and parametrization of the SSE in the Letter is different from an alternative simpler result, the difference is shown to be completely redundant because of the gauge-freedom of the state vector's phase.
In a recent paper Castellanos-Jaramillo and Castellanos-Moreno proposed a simple quantum-mechanical model for an electron in the vicinity of an ionized nanostructure with a permanent electric dipole. They chose the interaction of the electron with the charge and the dipole in such a way that the resulting Schrödinger equation is separable into radial and angular parts. In this comment we show that those authors did not solve the angular eigenvalue equation with proper periodic boundary conditions and that they also made a mistake in the elimination of the first derivative in the radial equatio…
We observe that in nonlinear quantum mechanics, unlike in the linear theory, there exists, in general, a difference between the energy functional defined within the Lagrangian formulation as an appropriate conserved component of the canonical energy-momentum tensor and the energy functional defined as the expectation value of the corresponding nonlinear Hamiltonian operator. Some examples of such ambiguity are presented for a particularly simple model and some known modifications. However, we point out that there exist a class of nonlinear modifications of the Schrödinger equation where this d…
Bassi and Ghirardi have developed a new theory to address the measurement problem based upon non-linear and stochastic modifications of the Schroedinger equation, which has been given the name Quantum Mechanical Spontaneous Localization or QMSL, with one of the emphasis dealing with reduction or wavefunction collapse within the nervous system. Analysis of this portion of their theory reveals that it faces several problems.
We discuss Staruszkiewicz's nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation. It is pointed out that the expression for the energy functional for this modification is not unique as the field-theoretical definition of energy does not coincide with the quantum-mechanical one. As a result, this modification can be formulated in three different ways depending on which physically relevant properties one aims to preserve. Some nonstationary one-dimensional solutions for suitably chosen potentials, including a KdV soliton, are presented, and the question of finding stationary solutions is also disc…
Jia and Dutra (J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) 11877) have considered the one-dimensional non-Hermitian complexified potentials with real spectra in the context of position-dependent mass in Dirac equation. In their second example, a smooth step shape mass distribution is considered and a non-Hermitian non - PT- symmetric Lorentz vector potential is obtained. They have mapped this problem into an exactly solvable Rosen-Morse Schrodinger model and claimed that the energy spectrum is real. The energy spectrum they have reported is pure imaginary or at best forms an empty set. Their claim on the…
With the consideration of spherical symmetry for the potential and mass function, one-dimensional solutions of non-relativistic Schrodinger equations with spatially varying effective mass are successfully extended to arbitrary dimensions within the frame of recently developed elegant non-perturbative technique, where the BenDaniel-Duke effective Hamiltonian in one-dimension is assumed like the unperturbed piece, leading to well-known solutions, whereas the modification term due to possible use of other effective Hamiltonians in one-dimension and, together with, the corrections coming from the …
We present an extension of Staruszkiewicz's modification of the Schrödinger equation which preserves its main and unique feature: in the natural system of units the modification terms do not contain any dimensional constants. The extension, similarly as the original, is formulated in a three-dimensional space and derives from a Galilean invariant Lagrangian. It is pointed out that this model of nonlinearity violates the separability of compound systems in the fundamentalist approach to this issue. In its general form, this modification does not admit stationary states for all potentials for wh…
Tanabe et al (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 82} 040101(R) 2010) have experimentally demonstrated that the emission properties of unstable atoms in entangled and product states are different. The authors define an apparent decay time as a fitting parameter which falls below the lifetime of the single atom for entangled pairs. We argue that their results about coincidence time spectra are correct, but those concerning lifetimes cannot be considered conclusive because they assume the emission of photons by the two atoms to be independent processes, a doubtful hypothesis for entangled states. We suggest an im…
In this paper we consider some (generalized) models which deal with n--level atom interacting with a single radiation mode and study a general structure of Rabi floppings of these generalized ones in the strong coupling regime. To solve these models we introduce multi cat states of Schr{\" o}dinger in our terminology and extend the result in (quant--ph/0203135) which Rabi frequencies are given by matrix elements of generalized coherent operators (quant--ph/0202081) under the rotating--wave approximation. Our work is a full generalization of Frasca (quant--ph/0111134) and Fujii (quant--ph/02031…
Using perturbative methods, we analyse a nonlinear generalisation of Schrodinger's equation that had previously been obtained through information-theoretic arguments. We obtain analytical expressions for the leading correction, in terms of the nonlinearity scale, to the energy eigenvalues of the linear Schrodinger equation in the presence of an external potential and observe some generic features. In one space dimension these are: (i) For nodeless ground states, the energy shifts are subleading in the nonlinearity parameter compared to the shifts for the excited states, (ii) the shifts for the…
